Ruby Grindstaff , age 92, of 919 Medical Park Drive, formerly from Butler, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012, after an extended illness. She was born December 4, 1919, to the late James and Myrtle Potter Brewer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dana Grindstaff and by two brothers, Claude and Bill Brewer. Ruby was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed farming, raising cattle, and gardening.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Claude Brewer Jr., Geraldine Gentry, and James Brewer all of Butler, TN, Leola Watson of Carryville, TN; and one sister-in-law, Hartensia Brewer of Butler, also special friend, Richard Hagler of Mountain City.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Grindstaff were conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2012, from the Eastside Memory Chapel of the Hux Lipford Funeral Home, with Reverend Leonard Fletcher officiating. Graveside service and burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Park. Family received friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers were Benny Stout, Dean Campbell, Tommy Poore, Richard Hagler, Blaine Branch, Charlie Mann, and Coty Brewer. At other times the family will receive friends at 725 Little Dry Run Rd. in Butler.

Claude Brewer, age 86, of Butler, passed away on Saturday morning, November 27, 2010 at the Mountain City Care Center.

Claude was born September 11, 1924 in Johnson County to the late James and Myrtle Potter Brewer. He enjoyed hunting and farming. Claude was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Brewer.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Hartensia DeLoach Brewer; daughters, Rosa Leola Watson of Caryville, TN and Geraldine Gentry and husband Jim of Butler; sons, James Brewer and wife Janie and Claude Brewer, Jr. and wife Sharon, both of Butler; sister, Ruby Grindstaff of Mountain City; grandchildren, Matthew Watson, Coty Brewer, Dalton Brewer, Tina Brewer, Earl Brewer, Robert Brewer, Christian Furchess, Cloy Furchess, Jonathan Furchess, Elizabeth Furchess, Judy Stout, Vance Gentry, Sharon Gentry and Loretta Gentry; several great grandchildren; and special friends, Johnny Tackett and Charlie Mann.

The family will receive friends at the home, 725 Little Dry Run Road, Butler, TN 37640.

It was Claude's wish to be cremated. There will be no public viewing or service at the funeral home. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Brewer, Jr., eight-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Brewer, Butler, Tenn., died at a local hospital Sunday night at 10 o'clock, after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from the residence this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Cloe Grace Thompson, age 86, Jonesborough, passed away Monday, September 4, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Butler, TN and daughter of the late Andrew & Myrtle Reece Phillips. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John C. Thompson. Survivors include son, Clyde Cox, Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Diane Hicks, Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Bonnie Dunbar, Nellie Foster and Faye Laws.

Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 am Friday, September 8, 2017 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Rev. David Reece officiating.

BUTLER - CC Phillips Jr., age 87, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born on July 16, 1931 to the late Neil and Hester (Bunton) Phillips. In addition to his parents, CC was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Vernice; one step-son, Wayne Jessee; sister, Chestalee Mansfield and Irene Morrell and brothers, Thomas, Charlie, Elmer, Dayton and Ernest Phillips.

CC was a United States Army Veteran and served during the Korean War. CC was always happy and had a contagious smile and laugh. He never met a stranger and was always helping others.

CC enjoyed being outdoors and especially enjoyed watching fish in his pond.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Phillips, who was his teenage sweetheart. They were reunited again and married in 1988 and had 30 wonderful years together. Also surviving are his children; Colleen Charland and husband Roland, Sonny Phillips and wife Gail, Andy Phillips and Holly Lopez and husband Alfonso; sister, Maxine Landry; brother, Aubrey 'Tex' Phillips and Sandy; grandchildren; Bryan Charland and wife Leah and their daughter, Loryn, Joey Charland and wife Erica and their son, Lincoln, David Charland and wife Monica, Eyonne Lopez, Alfonso Lopez; step grandchildren, Terri and Storm and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ray Greene officiating. Graveside service and interment with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard will follow at the Cable Cemetery. Luella Phillips Storie, age 91, of Beech Mountain, NC passed away on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, at Glenbridge Health & Rehab Center in Boone, NC.

She was born on May 20, 1928, in Beech Mountain, NC, a daughter of the late Conley Phillips and the late Susie Guy Phillips.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband: Dallas Storie; Daughter: Janelle Hunt; four brothers and one sister.

Luella enjoyed going to the Avery Co. Senior Center, Watching "Days of Our Lives" and watching "Hee Haw." She also enjoyed cooking, but most importantly she loved and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Luella leaves behind to cherish her memory her Son: Van (Trevetta) Storie of Ft. Mill, SC; Daughter: Sherry (Roy) Finley of Forest City, NC; Daughter: Regina (Lee Bumgardner) Clark of Lenoir, NC; Daughter: Amanda (Daniel) Vance of Crossnore, NC: seven Grandchildren, 13 Great-Grandchildren, two Great-Great Grandchildren and several special Nieces and Nephews.

Mr. Jack Dana Guy, 79, of Jonas Ridge, and formerly of the Beech Creek community, died Tuesday evening, June 17, 2008 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 21, 1928 in Avery County, a son of the late Thomas "Tom" and Nora Phillips Guy.
Mr. Guy was the owner of Guy's Folk Toys and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is one sister, Marie Guy Greene of Elk Park; and a number of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Guy Hicks; and one brother, Ray Guy.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Warren. Burial will follow in the Ward Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

HAMPTON - Von Austin Fritts, 79, Hampton passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical after a brief illness.

A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Robert Lee & Donnie Elkins Fritts. Von was a retired employee of Nor-Well Company. He loved fishing and "Loafing" with his buddies.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Elsie Simerly Fritts. Two Children: James "Jim" Fritts & Wife Donna, Elizabethton and Reba Shreve & husband Gregory, Matthews, North Carolina. His Grandchildren: Robbie Fritts, Christopher Shreve , Whitney Shreve, Chris Fuller and wife Melissa and Robert Fuller. His Great Grandchildren: Dylan, Haylee, Alexis, Makenzie, Ashton and Chelsea Fuller. His brother: Harold Fritts and wife Priscilla, Alexandria, Virginia. His Sister: Mary Colbert, Butler. Also surviving are several nieces & nephews. Von's special friends: Karen Fisher, E.J. Blevins, Andy Arnett and Duck Stout.

A Service to celebrate the life of Von Fritts will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Honorary Pallbearers will be employees and former employees of Nor-Well Company, Boyd Smith, Richard Smith, Bobby Joe Taylor, Freddie Shreve and Dallas Richardson. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital and the 2500 Wing, Johnson City Medical Center. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. His body was given to Restore Life for research.

It is with great sadness that the family of James “Rebel Jim” Brewer announces his passing on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at his residence at age 57. He was born September 3, 1964 to the late Claude and Hartensia Brewer. He loved hunting and fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife Janie Brewer of the home; one daughter Jo Dawn Furchess; three sons: Charlie Mann, Dalton Brewer and Cody Brewer; two sisters: Leola Watson and Geraldine Gentry; one brother Junior Brewer; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. We are saddened to announce the passing of Carl Duffield, age 88, on Saturday, October 30, 2021 in Johnson City Medical Center. He was born May 20, 1933 to Anna Mae Duffield. Carl was a 1953 graduate of Hampton High School and was a US veteran, He served in US Army in 278 Infantry in Fort Devens, MA with an honorable discharge in 1950 and served in US Coast Guard in Port O’Connor, TX with and honorable discharge in 1954 and also a member of the US National Guard in 1949. In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his grandparents John R. and Bessie Duffield and two sons-in-law Kenneth Taylor and David Triplett.
Carl was a businessman having owned and operated many businesses: floral shop in 1968, a monument shop in 1970, grocery store, Amish Deli and Sub Shop, He served as Johnson County Coroner, Judicial Commissioner (Justice of the Peace 1st Section), Youth Services officer, Mountain City Dispatch and Johnson County Magistrate. Carl received an Associates Degree in Radio & Electronics in 1960, received a diploma in Mechanical Drawing in 1964, a diploma in General Business and received a certificate of Civil Defense in 1979. He attended Betsy Floral School.
He was a 64 year member of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge F & AM (joined in May 1957) 32nd in 1974, Scottish Rite nobles of the Mystic Shrine December 1974 and a Certificate of Charter Membership in July 1976. H was appointed Ambassador for Jericho Shrine Temple in 1980 and in 1982 received recognition for his contribution to the Directors Staff.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 66 years Carnie Lewis Duffield; children: Wanda Taylor, Linda Duffield, Retha Triplett, Mike (Tamy) Duffield and Randy Duffield; grandchildren: Dwayne (Deana) Duffield, John (Cindy) Potter, Donna (Michael) Tolliver, Deirdre (Brad) Lunsford and Brook Barnette; great grandchildren: Bryson, Isaiah, Lacey, Loki, John, Bradlee, Wyatt and Macon; sisters-in-laws Mary Ann Price and Peggy Main and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A military graveside service accorded by Johnson County Honor Guard will follow service in Phillilppi Cemetery. Eddie Joe Guy, age 68, of Mountain City, TN passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Frye Hospital in Hickory, NC. He was born on March 11, 1954 to the late Ray Odell Guy and Thelma Lee Hicks Guy.

Eddie was a truck driver for 50 years and he was the best. Eddie and Cindy were extremely close, they loved each other deeply. They trucked together, gardened together and did almost everything together. The Most important thing to Eddie was serving God. He loved the Lord. He was a Sunday school superintendent, played guitar and sang in church. Eddie was a blessing to everyone who knew him and he never met a stranger. He was loved by many and will be missed deeply.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 25 years, Cindy Burton Guy; his daughter Kelly Guy and friend David; his two daughters, not by blood, but by love, Melissa Robinson and husband William and Tonya Burton and fiancé, Brian Willis; his five precious grandchildren, Danielle, Dalton, Desirea, Derek, and Dara Bella.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Grace Baptist Church ( Foscoe, NC) with Preacher Tyler Street and Preacher Jeff Guy to officiate.
