Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday (today) at the Tetrick Funeral Home chapel in Elizabethton with Rev. Dennis Hamm Jr. and Rev. Burl Garland officiating. Music by Hardin Brothers Quartet. Burial was in Ensor Cemetery. Pallbearers were H.R. Long Jr., Junior Grindstaff, Frank Shupe, Carl Keller, Junior Greer, Russell Arney, Fred Stout, and Med Garland.

Burial will be made in the Ensor Cemetery.
The body was returned to the home of Mitchell Grindstaff Friday afternoon and will remain there until 1:00 o'clock Sunday when it will be removed to the church.

James B. Arnold, age 91 of Route 3, Mountain City (Dewey Community) died at his home on Thursday, Sept. 24, after a long illness. He was a native of Johnson County and a retired farmer; a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.

ELIZABETHTON — William Roy Arney, 84, Elizabethton, passed away Monday November 1, 2010, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late James David and Alice Dugger Arney. He had lived most of his life in Carter County. Roy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He had worked for several years at North American Rayon Corporation and retired from The Raytheon Corporation, Bristol.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Blevins Arney; four brothers: Haskell, Duke, John David and Earl Arney; and two sisters: Marie Potter and Norma Hart.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: David & Jennifer Arney, Elizabethton; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 4, 2010, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Loren Harris. A Patriotic Tribute will be played by Mr. Arney's son, David Arney, following the funeral service.

Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, will be: Kenneth Arney, John Arney, Haskell "Buddy" Arney, Richard Knode, Clyde Williams and Carl Roberson. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion and Tennessee National Guard.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The family of Elizabeth Priscilla Slemp Gentry are saddened to announce the passing of their beloved Mother on December 18, 2021, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was 97 years of age at the time of her passing. Elizabeth was a daughter, Mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, friend, farmer, and homemaker. She was born at home in the Neva community of Johnson County, Tennessee, on December 30, 1923, to Charles Franklin “Charlie” and Nettie Florence Arney Slemp. Elizabeth attended Brownlow Elementary School and Johnson County High School from which she graduated in 1941. She furthered her education by attending Business School in Elizabethton, Tennessee. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, reading her Bible, spending time with family and being an active member of the Johnson County Senior center. She was a member Pleasant View Christian Church and also attended God’s Country Church.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, her five siblings Elsie Slemp Mercer and husband, Paul, of Winsor, Virginia; Vennie Slemp Wilson and husband Robert of Mountain City, Tennessee; Clydie Slemp Bear and husband Marion, of Champaign, Illinois; Orville Slemp and wife Lola of Mountain City, Tennessee; McDonald Slemp and wife Ruby of Mountain City, Tennessee, her two husbands, Carl Smith Courtner and Richard Dale Gentry, and one grandson, Mark Blaine Courtner of Mountain City, Tennessee.

Erby Lee Johnson, age 82, of Mountain City, TN went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born August 6, 1934 to the late Whitlaw Johnson and Una Louisa Arney Johnson. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having retired after 23 years of service. Following his retirement from the military, he worked for Lockheed and later worked as a pipeline inspector. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Everett Johnson and Whitlaw Dent Johnson, Jr.

Erby was a unique man. It has been said that there was never a dull or boring moment around him. He was a man with a large personality and lived his life to the beat of his own drum. Erby loved Mountain City and Johnson County. He owned two airplanes and enjoyed flying over the beautiful mountains. He was a member of First Christian Church.

John Paul Long Sr., 95, Butler, went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, April 10, 2013, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Roanzy & Mary Emily Arney Long. He had lived in South Bend, Indiana, for over forty years and was a retired employee of Sibleys Machine Foundry in South Bend.

Mr. Long had served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was wounded in the Pacific Campaign and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Post 61, Mountain City, the Johnson County Honor Guard, The Disabled American Veteran Chapter 19, Elkhart, Indiana, and the V.F.W. Post in Elkhart, Indiana.

Mr. Long was a member and Deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. He was a volunteer at the Mountain City Health Care for several years. He was a great fisherman.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife: Ruth Viola Wegner, June 6, 1994; by a son, Richard H. Long, who died February 10, 2004; five brothers: Lonnie, Mitchell, Joseph, Hayse and Edward Long; and four sisters: Stella Love, Reba Greene, Elsie Fredericks and Dot Crosswhite.

Survivors include his wife: Ona Pleasant Long; A Son: John Paul Long Jr. and wife, Anna Marie, Osceola, Indiana; A Step-Daughter: Judy Karen Wagner and husband, Larry, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Five Grandchildren; 13 Great Grandchildren; and 5 Great Great Grandchildren; One Brother: H.R. Henry was born in Doe Valley, TN on August 2, 1925, to the late H.R. and Mary Arney Long. In addition to his parents, H Long was preceded in death by his wives Lucille Long and Lula Cummings Long, sisters Stella Long, Reba Lowe, Elsie Long, and Dot Crosswhite and his brothers Lonnie Long, Mitchell Long, Joseph Long, John Long, Hayes Long, and Edward Long, and his son Michael H. Long.

H.Long worked as a farmer, a carpenter, and retired from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. When he was not farming, he enjoyed fishing and traveling. H. Long was a member and former Deacon and Trustee of Bethany Baptist Church and Taylorsville Masonic Lodge 243 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife Lois Long and his Daugher-n-Law Mary Etta Long. Funeral services for H Long were conducted at 7 pm on Monday, November 26, 2018, in the Charlie B. Gatha was born on May 7, 1919, in Johnson County to the late J.B. and Lizzie Swift Arnold. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WW II and was a member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Hubbard; and four brothers, Clarence, Joseph, Boyd and Spencer Arnold.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Laura Swift Arnold; his son, Paul Arnold and wife, Wanda, of Mountain City; his sister, Betty Collins, of Stoney Creek; his brother, John Arnold and wife, Karen, of Mountain City; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hubbard was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late James and Lizzie Swift Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Boyd Arnold, Spencer Arnold and Joe Arnold.

Mrs. Hubbard was retired from Bemburg and North American Rayon Corporation. She was a member of East River Park Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Walter Sherman Hubbard, of the home; a sister, Betty Collins, Elizabethton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Karen Arnold and Gatha and Laura Arnold, all of Mountain City; stepchildren and spouses, Michael and Sue Hubbard, Johnson City, Eugene and Patsy Hubbard and Lester Lee and Terry Hubbard, all of Elizabethton, and Mary Katherine and Jim Mason, Mountain Home, Ark.; special grandson, Joshua Howard Hubbard, Elizabethton; and special niece, Mary Short, Elizabethton. The funeral service for Mrs. Hubbard will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. John Smith, minister, officiating. Mary Arnold White, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton with her son, Glen White, at her side.
She was born April 7, 1924 to the late Nora and Joseph Daniel Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Lockhart; brother, Stacy Arnold; husband, James Rondal White; daughter, Shelby Bunton; and grandson, David Bunton.
Mary had a long career at the Giant and Food Lion Supermarkets. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Elizabethton and she delighted in being a top seller of dried fruit and fancy nuts each fall for the church's Backpack Ministries' fundraiser.
She is survived by her son, Glen White and wife Vickie, and son-in-law, Billy Bunton of Elizabethton; grandson, Joe White and Debra Chandler of Elizabethton; granddaughter, Donna Bunton and Dave Lynch of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-grandchildren, Eric Afflerbach and Nikki of Miami Beach, Fla., Cara White and Alex White of Elizabethton; and many extended family members and beloved friends who will miss her dearly.

Velva was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Benjamin Dudley Shoun and Emma Belle Tribble Shoun. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell S. Nave; a son, Darrell Nave, Jr.; six brothers, Andy Shoun, Earl Tribble, Jess Shoun, Carl Shoun, Leroy Shoun, and Bill Shoun; and two sisters, Hazel Elliott and Vada Shoun.

Velva was a devoted wife, loving mother and a homemaker. She was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star, Pythian Sisters and a member of the White Shrines.

Ms. Greer was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and she enjoyed spending time with her family. Once called a "national treasure" for his old time mountain music singing, song writing, story telling and playing, Clint Howard died at his home with his family at his side October 16, 2011. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Howard had learned how to sing from his mother when he was 6 years old, and over the course of his lifetime, he entertained tens of thousands of people. He performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and the Newport Folk Festival (in the 1960s), to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tenn., in the 1980s. In the 1990s and into the 2000s, Mr. Howard played either alone or with Doc Watson and others at Merlefest in North Wilkesboro, N.C. He also performed at Studio One at ETSU's public radio station WETS; the Down Home in Johnson City; Old Butler Days; and at the Cranberry Festival in Shady Valley, Tenn.
In addition, the Johnson County, Tenn., native played his guitar, sang his songs and shared his jokes and old time stories with residents at area nursing homes and assisted living facilities. And in 2004, he took time from tending to his cattle and land to teach old time mountain music to at-risk young people enrolled in the Optional High School in his home county. A CD titled "Passing It On" emerged from that experience.
Mr. Howard, whose work is credited with influencing such internationally renowned musicians as Bob Dylan and the Kruger Brothers from Switzerland, performed at Carnegie Hall with Fred Price, Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Doc Watson. He once appeared on the Pete Seeger Show with Price and Watson. For many years, he performed at community centers, retirement homes, churches, festivals, fiddler's conventions, at colleges and universities and other venues with his late son Clarence Howard, his grandson Garet Howard and long-time friend Jack Proffitt. The group was known as the Clint Howard Band, and its musical legacy will live, some believe, forever.
The Kruger Brothers (Jens Kruger, Uwe Kruger, Joel Landsberg) loved dearly to visit Mr. Howard in his home on Antioch Road in Johnson County; they said their own music was rooted in his work. "Clint Howard has been known to us as one of the most respected and influential personalities in American musical history," they wrote. "His groundbreaking recordings of classic American folk repertoire have been cornerstones for countless musicians and audiences throughout the world. It is our humble belief that Clint Howard deserves to be recognized as one of the nation's greatest treasures."
Mr. Howard always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye and loved to make people laugh. Before he and his band performed, it often fell to him to prime the audience with a funny tall tale or to reminisce about what life use to be like in the hills and hollers of Johnson County when he was a boy. He often shared that he learned from his beloved mother how to sing and vary his pitch and tone; this was a key to creating the power and range of his voice. "It didn't make any difference what time of the night that was," he once told an interviewer. "Me and her would just go to singing songs out of the song book or gospel songs, or just whatever. Me and her'd sing sometimes till one or two o'clock in the morning." One of his most popular ballads, "Light in the Window," came directly from that mother/son bond, and may have been his favorite of the dozens that he and others have created.
"His natural way with songs and stories is more of a born gift than an acquired skill," said Robert Cogwell, director of the Tennessee Arts Commission Folklife Program.
Mr. Howard was a welder at the shipyard in Newport News, Va., and also at Maymead, where he retired in 1990. He also worked as a school bus driver.
He cherished his family and his community and always took care of his cows. He fiercely took objection to anyone who criticized Johnson County in even the slightest way. He loved its rugged mountainous terrain, its people and its bedrock values of the Ten Commandments, loyalty to the U.S. military and to the American flag.
He thought he was truly blessed to have been born and raised and to have lived nearly all his life in The Third community of Johnson County.
In his cowboy boots, jeans and a John Deere cap tilted slightly on his head, and with his wife Betty nearly always next to him, he was frequently seen around Mountain City behind the wheel of a pickup truck. He kept a close eye on his beef cattle, tending to them day and night, and helping deliver many a newborn calf in some of Johnson County's most ferocious blizzards.
A member and choir leader of Antioch Baptist Church and a staunch Republican, Mr. Howard served several terms as a Johnson County commissioner. More recently, and up until his death, he was a Johnson County highway commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lizzie Howard; by his brother Clyde Howard and by his sister Ida Greer. Also preceding Mr. Howard in death were his son Clarence Howard, son-in-law Sam Robinson and grandson Mitchell Howard.
Survivors are: his wife Betty Snyder Howard; daughter Patsy Robinson Timbs and husband Larry; son Ray Howard; daughter-in-law Glenda Howard; grandsons Garet Howard, Brad Howard and Clint Robinson and wife Shannon; granddaughters Sandra Howard McCloud and husband Larry, Rachel Robinson Shearin and husband John, Ashley Howard and Hana Howard. William B. "Buddy" Arnold, 68, West Grove, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at his home. He was the husband of Ruth Ann Arnold. Born in Mountain City, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Clarence and Alice Snyder Arnold. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran. He was a member of the American Legion William W. Fahey Post #491, Kennett Square. He was a retired chemical operator for Ciba Geigy of Newport, Delaware. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Arnold, Lloyd Arnold and Glen Arnold; and one sister, Ruth Craven.

Betty Lou Stout Cornett, 84 (Mimi to family and close friends), of Southern Pines, North Carolina, passed away on November 17, 2017 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Mimi was born January 19, 1933 in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late B.C. and Donnie Stout. She truly loved her family, and especially her great grandchildren. She always loved doing things for others and never wanted anything in return for herself; she enjoyed cooking and was an avid reader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose Cornett, and one sister, Mary Lee Vaughn.
She is survived by two children, Kathryn Cornett-Ulrich (Harry) and Sandra Corbetto-Cornett (Eduardo); four grandchildren, Matthew and Daniel Bower, Giovanni Corbetto and Chiara Cates (Corbetto); in addition, she is survived by five great grandchildren, Jackson, Kairi, Sebastian, Nicolas and Micaela. She is also survived by beloved brothers Fred, Jack, and B.C. Stout and their children.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Mary Arney Jeter, age 81, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away at her home on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 following an extended illness.

She was born in Neva, TN to the late Kermit Arney and Una Dugger Arney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Wayne Arney; brothers-in-law, Steve Robbins and Jerry Dugger.

Mary was a member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church. She loved her family, church family and community and was always willing to help others. Her passion was being outside working in her garden. She was a wonderful cook and loved cooking for her family and neighbors. Mary was a graduate of ETSU where she graduated with a degree in education. She loved children and taught Kindergarten for 15 years.

Mary was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and will be truly missed.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 59 ½ years, Nelson Jeter; sons, Nelson Jeter Jr., and Nathan Jeter and wife Robin; grandchildren, Kathryn Jeter and Joshua Jeter; sister, Martha Dugger (and the late Jerry), Belle Cable and husband Ellis and Ruth Robbins (and the late Steve); brother, Glenn Arney and wife Elena; sister-in-law, Ida Lee Arney (and the late Wayne); several nieces and nephews and her church family.

Patricia is survived by her son, Alan Maupin; brother, Terry Arney (Sally); niece, Tammy Owens; nephew, Terry Arney II.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Doran & Thelma Arney.

Patricia Faye Maupin was born on April 13, 1947. She was a resident of Washington County, Tennessee her entire life. She worked at East Tennessee State University for twenty-nine years in the administration office. She loved fellowshipping at her church, serving others and was a powerful prayer warrior. Patricia “Pat” will always be remembered for her love of God, love of her son, and how she loved all around her, with unconditional love.

Billy Gene "Buddy" Slemp, Sr., of Lexington, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1939 to the late McDonald Slemp and Ruby Perkins Slemp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Cole Slemp, and a sister, Linda Rupard.

Buddy was a sweet and loving man. He retired as a truck driver after driving for 47 years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Davis Slemp; sons: Billy Gene Slemp, Jr. of Bolt, West Virginia and Carl Franklin Slemp of Lexington, NC; sisters: Donna West and husband Mike, Karen Icenhour and husband Tom; brother, Jack Slemp and wife Olive; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Richard Michael 'Mike' 'Club" Blevins, age 67, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was born on September 7, 1949 to Earlene Cress Blevins and the late Dick Blevins. In addition to his father, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, David Edward Blevins.

Mike was a contractor for many years and in 1978 he opened his own restaurant in Mountain City, Mike's Bar-B-Que. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed his guns and reloading his own ammunition.

In addition to his mother, Earlene; Mike is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sarah Blevins of Leland, NC; special friend like a son, Robbie Bradley of Elizabethton, TN, Boy Dog, two nieces, Nikki Blevins Sawyers and Brandy Blevins Childester, mother of his son, Beverly Blevins of Lottsburg, VA; and many, many special friends.

Mary Alice Stalcup Buck, 77, Johnson City passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, in the Johnson City Medical Center with her loving family by her side.
A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late William Leslie and Eula Fern Robinson Stalcup. She had lived in Johnson City since 1964.
She was retired from H.I.S., Johnson City. Mary was a member of the Boone Trail Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. She loved to work in her flowers.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. Buck, who died March 21, 1999.
Survivors include her son: William N.
