Robert T. (Bob) Shell, died in the Appalachian Hospital Friday evening at 9:30 o'clock. Death was sudden.
He was a native of Carter County, and a member of the First Christian Church. He was also a member of Modern Woodsmen of America.
Survivors are two daughters, Rubel Shell of Elizabethton, and Gladys Lowe, Covington, Tenn.; four sons, Harry Shell, Elizabethton, Staff Sgt. Walter G. Shell of Camp Sibert, Ala., Corp. Funeral services for Robert T. (Bob) Shell, who died suddenly in the Appalachian Hospital Friday at 9:30 p.m., were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence on 910 East Broad Street with the Rev. Clarence Howington and Rev. E. M. Umbach officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

ELIZABETHTON - Florence Daugherty, age 97, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

Florence was born in Carter County to the late George Washington Taylor and Nannie Lyons Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Daugherty; a daughter, Sheila Daugherty; a son, Roger Daugherty; and five brothers; one sister; seven half-brothers; and two half-sisters.

Florence was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation. She was a member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church, where she had attended since birth and had previously served as clerk and treasurer for over 50 years. Florence enjoyed vegetable gardening, cooking for her family and visiting the sick in her community.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Jerry Daugherty and wife Vicky, of Elizabethton and Kyle Daugherty, also of Elizabethton; one grandson, Jerry Daugherty and wife Rachel, of Knoxville; one granddaughter, Jennifer Daugherty, of Elizabethton; three great granddaughters, Emilia and Ella Daugherty, of Knoxville and Harper Smith, of Elizabethton; and one brother, Walter Taylor, of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Florence Daugherty will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in the Chapel of Tetrick funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Gene Fleenor, officiating. Music will be provided by Joyce Grindstaff. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 AM on Thursday.

Walter Coolidge Taylor, 92 passed from this life into his eternal life on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at his home, surrounded by family.

Walter was born August 23, 1927 to Nanny (Lyons) and George Washington Taylor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Juanita (Whitehead) Taylor and seven brothers and sisters (Herman, Delmer, Emmert, Eugene, Florence, Corinne, and Clarence) as well as nine older half-brothers and sisters.

Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 as a military policeman and was stationed at Tachikawa AFB in Japan. He retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 42 years of service. He was a kind, gentle and generous man who never complained about anything. He enjoyed gardening and working in his year for as long as he was able. He also enjoyed watching the birds at his feeder.

Those left to cherish his memory are daughters, Marlene (Richard) Good and Donna (Dan) Schumaier and two grandsons, John (Ketasha) Goodwin and Jordan Grindstaff who faithfully cared for his Pappaw for the past few months. Walter is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Graham, Gracen and Gretchen Goodwin and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Jordan Grindstaff, his primary caregiver; Ada Chizmar; Debra Broyles; Ballad Health Hospice, especially Greg Matney, RN; Torainna Hensley, CAN – his special friend who he loved to hear sing for him; Candace; Robbie; and Anna, his chaplain who also sang for him. Thanks also to Providence Companion Care, especially Chelseigh and Sandra for their care during his last days and to Dr. David Moulton who took good care of him for many years.

A graveside burial service was held at Happy Valley Cemetery on July 6, 2019. Thanks to the Carter County Honor Guard for the military honors as well as to the Rev. Luis O'Bourke for the commitment service.

Joe Minton Taylor, 90, of Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018, at his residence.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Robert and Lizzie Grindstaff Taylor.
Joe served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a retired supervisor in the Spinning Unit at North American Rayon Corporation where he had worked for 42 years.
Joe was the oldest member of Big Springs Church of Christ. He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Blaine D., Ira, John R., Howard M., Hobart, Fred, Paul W. and Orvil J. Taylor.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ivade Morris Taylor; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Larry Jeffers, Hampton, and Debbie and David Oaks, Elizabethton; a son, Randy Taylor of West Virginia; one grandson, Austin Oaks; several nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Jackie Taylor, Lillian Pierce and June Taylor.
Funeral services for Joe Minton Taylor were conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Glen Layfield, minister, officiating. Music was provided by Mr. Larry Jeffers. Packy R. Fair, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at his home. He was born in Elizabethton to the late Vernon F. Fair Sr. and Mae (Taylor) Fair. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Kay Fair; a great-grandson, Jaxon Bradley Curl; and a sister, Pat Wilson. Packy was a United States Army Veteran and a member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church. He retired as a forklift operator at Fleming-IJ Company. He loved sitting on his patio and counting the stars. Those left to cherish and remember Packy include his loving wife of 59 years, Darrell Ann Campbell Fair, of the home; his son, Steve Fair and girlfriend Pam Higgins of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Tiffanie Curl and husband Billy of Elizabethton and Kayla Babb (Lauren) of Paducah, Ky.; two brothers, Vernon F. Fair Jr. of Jonesborough and Tommy Fair of Elizabethton; one sister, Joyce Stevenson of Elizabethton; and three great-grandchildren, Austin Osborne, Trentin Lewis and Bradley Curl, all of Elizabethton. A celebration of Packy’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, April 17, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Pastor Steve Davis officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside. Active pallbearers will be members of the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

ELIZABETHTON - Nancy Taylor Jones was called home on November 8th after a valiant battle with cancer. Nancy was a native of Elizabethton and remained there to raise her family her entire life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years James Paul Jones Sr, her parents, John R and Irene W Taylor and sister, Roma Jean Taylor.

Nancy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. She made long life friendships there which she continued to enjoy throughout her life. She spent 34 years working for United Telephone Company in Elizabethton. She was blessed with many friendships through work and to be able to retire at an early age to spend time with family.

Nancy embodied the true meaning of faith, family and love during her life. She attended Big Springs Church of Christ and rarely missed a service until her illness. She loved worshiping and spending time with her church family. She especially loved cooking meals to share during church events. She would also attend other women's bible study groups to further her faith. Nancy adored her family and cherished time either by sharing a meal, taking a girl's shopping trip or just talking. She was always thinking of others and putting their needs first. She demonstrated her servants' heart and love for others by cooking meals, phone calls and visits to friends and family in need.

Survivors include her son, James P Jones Jr (Susie Conner), daughter Angela Harkleroad (Randy), two granddaughters, Haley and Isabella, brother, Robert Taylor and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the special friends and family who blessed her life with calls, cards, food and prayers. You were truly a blessing to her and us. A special thank you to Caris for the wonderful care during this time.

The family will have a celebration of life service at 1 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2019 at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. David Tysinger and Mr. Glen Layfield Ministers officiating. The Eulogy will be given by Randy Harkleroad and Clyde Carter. Graveside services will immediately follow the ceremony at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Sylvia Mae Buck Story, 86, formerly of Lakewood Village Apartments, Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Roxie Buck and was born in Caretta, WV. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Story; and a brother, Harlan Buck.

Mrs. Story was a member of Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church in Erwin. She was the school secretary at Holston Heights Elementary School for twelve years and was also a homemaker.

She is survived by four children, Sharon Marston, Ashland, VA; Rev. Joel Story and his wife, Teresa, Louisburg, NC; Pat Sparkman, Holly Springs, NC; Darlene Mumpower, Bristol, TN; seven grandchildren, Timothy Marston and his wife, Virginia, New Market, VA; Christopher Marston and his wife, Susan, Aylett, VA; Michael Story and his wife, Karen, Clayton, NC; Michelle Story, Louisburg, NC; Christy Mumpower, Bristol, TN; Melinda Diehl and her husband, Scott, Mount Juliet, TN; Kelly Spencer and her husband Ken, Holly Springs, NC; ten great-grandchildren, Travis, Victoria, and Ethan Marston, Mercedes Marrero, Ethan Patterson, Daniel Spencer, Megan and Samantha Marston, Kitt Story and Landon Story; and a sister, Florine Lick, Johnson City, TN. Blaine Buck, Sr., 95, Elizabethton passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012 in the Hermitage Health Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Milton B. "Pig" & Osa Bell Redmond Buck.

He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and attended Tulane University in New Orleans.

He served in the Army Air Force as a crew chief-Pilot on a B-17 & B-29 Bombers during World War II. He flew several missions over Japan and on one flight his plane was short down. He earned many medals for his five and half years of service.

Blaine was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for over 40 years where he was a Supervisor in the Knitting Department.

Blaine was an inventor, he got a U.S. Patient and wrote a book. He was part-owner in a printing Company on West G. Street for several years.

He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton and the Fair-Morgan Sunday School Class. He was active in the Boy Scouts for many years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Mary Lee Merritt Buck who died October 17, 2004 and two sisters: Ann Buckles and Kathryn Lacey.

Survivors include his son: David B. Buck, Jr., of the home and formerly of Talbott, Tenn. A Brother & Sister-in-Law: Jack and Nancy Buck and their two children: Mike & Sandy.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday will be: Joel Briggs, Mack Merritt, Kenneth Nave, Terry Pierce, R.L. Hambrick and Ken Hughes. Jack Alvin Buck, age 94, went home to meet his Lord and Savior on Thursday May 17, 2018, passing at home following a brief illness.

He was a lifelong resident of the Elizabethton area. Jack was the son of the late M.B. and Osa Redmond Buck. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Slagle Buck, in 2015; brother, David Blaine Buck and sisters, Ann Buckles and Kathryn Lacy. Jack and Nancy Buck were members of First Christian Church Elizabethton where Jack previously served as Sunday School Treasurer and Nancy taught Sunday School for over 40 years.

Jack was graduate of Happy Valley High School where he enjoyed and lettered in football and basketball. He was a starting quarterback on the football team. Jack enjoyed playing sports and watching the Tennessee Volunteers while coaching from the stands. He was proud to serve his country in the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army in World War II, stationed in Italy. After the war ended, Jack returned home and enrolled in East Tennessee State University and graduated with a degree in business. After college graduation, Jack was employed at North American Rayon Corporation. His career followed at Nuclear Fuels as an accountability officer and supervisor for several departments until his retirement.

One of Jack's special talents was to spin a big tale while he enjoyed other's reaction to it. Hunting and fishing are the Buck family's passion. Jack's father taught him to hunt and fish as a child. He shared this enthusiasm and his skills with his sons throughout the years. The family enjoyed annual trips to South Dakota for pheasant hunts. When Jack was 92 years old he shot his last deer and recently went fishing at his favorite spot on the Doe River. Jack wrote memoirs of his sports, hunting, fishing and military experiences.

Those left to cherish Jack's memory include: two sons, Jack Buck and his wife Amy, of Florida; Mike Buck of Johnson City; Jack and Amy's two daughters, Brandy Roberts and her husband, Matt;BeckeyGreene and her husband, Daniel; great-grandsons, Will and Andrew Roberts and Mike's son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Mandy Buck. Jack also leaves behind daughter-in-law, Julie Buck; a niece, Teresa Young and her husband, Philip; several other nieces and nephews; several cousins and his special friends, Pat Szabo and family and Becky Harold.

A service to honor the life of Jack Alvin Buck will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Monday, May 21, 2018 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Michael Klaus, minister officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Monday prior to the service. Committal and entombment will follow the funeral service on Monday at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Mausoleum of Peace. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Martha L. Buck Oliver, 93, of Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 8, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Minnie Estridge Buck. She was also preceded in death by her son, Rickey Wayne Oliver, on November 9, 2018.
Mrs. Oliver was a member of Hunter Memorial Baptist Church.

Clara Dolores “Floss” McKinney, 78, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was born July 7, 1943 in Elizabethton to the late Albert Kenneth and Helen Fisher Shell.
Floss was a 1961 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She worked at Texas Instruments/Siemens for 32 years. She was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Arvel Lynn McKinney; her son-in-law, Leo Meredith; a sister, Ann Shell Hicks; and a niece, Wendy McKinney.

JOHNSON CITY - Jackie Taylor Winters, 80, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 10, 2020.

She was a daughter of the late William and Beryl Buckles Taylor.

Jackie was a skilled homemaker who enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, gardening, reading her Bible, and watching girls softball – especially the Lady Vols. Her unwavering faith in God, strong will, and joyful sense of humor provided comfort and strength to loved ones as they watched her go through many serious health issues. She would always say, “It’s going to be alright”.

In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by brothers Jerry and Mike Taylor; and grandson Charles Wise. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Charles “C.W.” Winters; children, Barbara Taylor (Terry), Wayne Winters, Terry Winters (Delores Trent), and Pam Weaver (Tommy); siblings, Charles Taylor (Teresa), Jean Langeroudi, and Cindi Taylor; grandchildren, Devon Winters, April Winters, Sheyenne Weaver, and Kendra Keylon; great-great-granddaughter, Rosa Paredes; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at 7:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor James Ginley officiating.

ELIZABETHTON - Bobbie Joe Buck, 71, Elizabethton passed away Friday, March 9, 2018 in the Select Specialty Hospital, Bristol, Tenn.

He was a Carter County native. Bobbie Joe was a 1965 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He served in the United States Navy. He was retired as Plant Manager with the MECO Corporation, Greeneville. Bobbie Joe was a member of V.F.W. Post 2166. He was preceded in death by his mother: Francis Louise Snead Buck and a daughter: Jocyene Tengroth.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years: Barbara Sue Asher Buck. His Children: Bobbie Joe Buck II & wife Freda, Johnson City, Carson Jackson & wife Judy, Abingdon, Va. And Cherial Lingerfelt, Bristol. His father, Billy Joe Buck. Five Grandchildren: Gina Percey & husband Matt, Randy Lingerfelt & fiancé Dottie Craig, Landon Jackson, Wesley Jackson and Logan Buck. Three Great Grandchildren: Jordan Percey, Jackson Percey and Ryder Lingerfelt.

JOHNSON CITY - Tara D. Lady, 70, of Johnson City, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022 at her residence, surrounded by her family. She was born July 28, 1951 in Johnson City, TN to Foy and Sue Jarrett. Tara grew up in Central Community of Carter County and graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1969.
She worked for many years at Watauga Industries as a supervisor, and then for several other companies in the Johnson City area. When she was not working, Tara enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, shopping and traveling, taking several cruses with her husband. She had also been a member of the Johnson City Church of God as well. In her words, the things that made her smile were family, flowers, and sunshine.
Tara is preceded in death by her father, Foy Jarrett and grandparents, Joe and Minnie Buck.
Those left to cherish her memory include, her husband of nineteen years, Jackson P. Lady; step-daughter, Emily Johnson and husband David; step-grandchildren, Hayden Johnson and Emma Clara Johnson; mother, Sue Jarrett; sister, Shay Mullins and husband Keith; and nephew Dalton Mullins.
Tara will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at Mt. Home National Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Gary Edwards.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Richard A. Shell, age 66, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

He was a son of the late Frederick "Bud" and Billie Bowers Shell and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Worthington Shell and a brother, Joseph Shell.

Richard was a former X-ray Technician and a former Physical Therapist. He enjoyed reading and was of the Catholic faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include a brother, Steve Shell of the home; a niece, Jamie Shell of Knoxville, TN; two aunts, Ruth Ann Cullop and Patty Swift and husband, Ken, all of Elizabethton; and three cousins.

BLUFF CITY - Susan D. Rutherford, age 55, of Bluff City, TN, went peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center after a long battle with cancer.

She is preceded in death by her father, Ray DeLoach; two spouses, Ronnie Rutherford and Mark Booher; and her maternal grandparents, Harry and Nina Shell.

She is survived by her mother, Carol Buchanan; brother, Doug DeLoach and wife Beth; sister, Teresa Booher and husband Jesse; nephew, Lucas DeLoach; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; her family at Elizabethton Housing Agency; her friends at BTES; and her dogs "Zip" and "Blaze".

To honor Susan's wishes, a cremation will take place with a private memorial service to be held at a later date.

ERWIN - Jackson Daniel "Danny" Heaton, Jr., 57, Erwin, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Born July 26, 1961 in Elizabethton, he had lived a number of years in Erwin. Danny was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. He served in the United States Air Force. He was formerly employed at Snap on Tool, Elizabethton. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his father Jack Heaton.

Survivors include his Daughter: Lauren (Joe) Arnett, Elizabethton. His Mother: Judy Rowland Heaton. Two Brothers: Scott (Dianne) Heaton and Doug (Nikki) Heaton all of Elizabethton. His fiancée Connie Tipton. Several nieces & nephews. His dog: Precious.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Lowell Shell officiating. Burial will follow the service.
