    Mary Alice Hammitt, age 91, left her earthly family on July 29th to be with her heavenly family, at Lakebridge Healthcare, following a lengthy illness.
    She was born September 25th, 1921, to John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy Lee Hammitt, in 1975. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Dewey, Clifton, Gar and Howard; and by three sisters, Martha Barr, Eve Presnell and Bessie Presnell.
    She was a member of Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ and was famous for her delicious soup beans and fantastic biscuits.
    Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Edna and Mack Presnell, Johnson City; son, Billy Hammitt, Clarksville, Georgia; Brothers, Calvin, Johnson City, James, Erwin, and William Mocksville, N.C.; grandchildren, Dwight and Angela Presnell and Crystal Mitchell, Johnson City; Great grandchildren; Garrison, Sarah Presnell and Cody Mitchell, Johnson City; great great grandson, Preston Mitchell, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    Special thanks to the staff at Lakebridge Healthcare.
    Funeral Services for Mrs. Hammitt will be conducted at Appalachian Funeral Home Thursday, August 1, 2013, at 8:00 P.M. with Brother Dewey Ward and Brother Eric Brown officiating. Music will be under the direction of Flossie Hamilton.
    The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until the service hour, or at her daughter's home at other times.
    Graveside service and interment will be Friday, August 2nd, 2013, at 10:30 A.M. at Highland Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends.

    Notes:

    William Riley "Casey" Ward, 91, of Mocksville, NC died on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

    A native of Watauga County, he was the son of the late John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward and the widower of the late Finnie Presnell Ward who died January 25, 2005. They shared more than sixty years of marriage.

    Mr. Ward was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army.

    He was a retired county maintenance worker and a member of Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church.

    Survivors include four sons, two daughters, two brothers, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

    Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, at Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the time of service.

    Interment will follow in the Ward Family Cemetery in Deep Gap, NC.

    JOHNSON CITY - James Elbert Ward, 84, of Johnson City went to his Heavenly Home on Friday, February 12, 2016, in the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

    He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late John and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. Mr. Ward was a member of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ. He had been a salesman most of his life. Mr. Ward was an avid reader and craftsman, and loved to read his bible and loved to attend church and gospel singing.

    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Johnson Ward in 2005; a son, Farlen Dale Ward; five brothers, Clifton, Howard, Garfield, Dewey and Casey Ward; four sisters, Martha Ward, Mary Alice Hammitt, Evie Presnell and Bessie Lee Presnell.

    Survivors include a daughter, Judy Gail Ward Archer of Johnson City; two sons, Darrell Ward and wife, Cheryl and Dwayne Ward all of Jonesborough; a brother, Calvin Ward and his wife, Ruth of Johnson City; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Sue Ward of South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Carrington Dailey and husband, Ronnie, Eric Archer and wife, Robin, Arvin Ward and wife, Martha, Amanda Fralin and husband, Aaron, Christopher Ward and wife, Ashley, Jessica and Allison Ward; thirteen great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews.

    A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 15, 2016, in the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ, 2733 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, with Pastor Donny Reagan officiating.

    The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Other times at the home of his son, Darrell, 334 A.A. Deakins Road, Jonesborough.

    In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, FL 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

    Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, in the Highlands Cemetery, Jonesborough. Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Dailey, Charles Archer, Arvin Ward, Christopher Ward, Michael Bailey and Adam Ward.

    Sarah Lucille Birchfield, 87 of Limestone entered into God’s glorious Kingdom Tuesday, May 9, 2023. She was born on March 9, 1936 in Washington County. Lucille was a devout Pentecostal by faith. She enjoyed singing, attending church services, revivals and spending time with her friends and family. Lucille also loved the family dog, “Buddy” who was a great companion and comfort to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Margaret Earp Ward; a sister, Mary Radford; her late husband, Robert Miller; her children, Darryl Byrd, Kevin Byrd, Joel Byrd and Kathy Byrd.
    Lucille leaves behind a family whom she treasured and loved, Allen Byrd and wife, Tammy of Limestone, Brenda Adams and husband, Mark of Elizabethton, Ivan Byrd of Telford and Wade Byrd and wife, Lori of Johnson City; brothers, J.R. Ward and wife, Sandra and Paul Ward and wife, Nadine; sisters, Betty Cochran and Pauline Honeycutt; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews. Lucille will always be remembered by her walk with Jesus Christ, her love, compassion and her kindness.
    Funeral services for Lucille will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, Mat 13, 2023 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Wesley Ward officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the service hour. Graveside services will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    The family would like to thank the staff of Life Care Center of Gray for the love and care shown to Lucille during her last days here on earth.

    JOHNSON CITY - Jack Presnell, 73, Johnson City passed away Monday, August 2, 2021 in the James H. Quillen Medical Center. He was a native of Banner Elk, NC and was the son of the late Conley and Bessie Lee Ward Presnell. Jack retired from Empire Furniture Company and attended Johnson City Baptist Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served is country during the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Jason Presnell.

    Survivors include his wife, Judy Presnell; three children, Jeff Presnell and wife, Elizabeth of Kingsport, Janet Presnell and Justin Presnell both of the home. Five sisters, Freda Presnell of Johnson City, Peggy Stewart of West Virginia, Bonnie Sims and husband, Teddy of Elizabethton, Vernie Turbyfill and husband, Teddy of Jonesborough and Lucy Ollis and husband, Gary of Johnson City; three grandchildren, Shannon, Taylor and Gavin Presnell; also several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services for Jack will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 4, 2021 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Wilkie Brookshire officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 5, 2021 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery Annex. Pallbearers will be Teddy Sims, Teddy Turbyfill, Gary Ollis, Jeff Presnell, Justin Presnell and Gavin Presnell. Bill Cash will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
