Whaley moved to Johnson City in 1959 from the Little Milligan Community near Butler. A member of the Little Milligan Baptist church and a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Bertha Whaley; two sisters, Mrs. Crettie Holloway, Butler and Mrs. Pearl DeLoach, Elizabethton; two brothers, Nathan and Dana Whaley of Butler; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late Nat and Pearl Whaley Deloach. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. Miss Deloach had formerly been employed at Eagles, Kress’s and Big K. she was a member of the Happy Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Manuel, Spencer and Robert Deloach. Survivors include two sisters: Pauline Poole, Elizabethton, and Effie Garland, Butler; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Pauline Deloach Poole, age 85 of Life Care Center of Elizabethton, TN and formerly of 215 Spring Street, Hampton, TN died Sunday, March 20, 2005 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Poole was a native of Johnson County but had lived in Carter County for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Nat and Pearl Whaley Deloach. She was a member of the Hampton Free Will Baptist Church and was a Homemaker. She was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. Survivors include one son, Jerry Poole of Hampton; Three daughters and sons-in-law, Charline and Authur Elliott of Hampton, Loretta and Jerry Ray of Butler and Paula and John Williams of Elizabethton; one sister, Effie Garland of Butler; three grandchildren, Laura Julian of Elizabethton, Ashley Poole of Hampton and Zachary Williams of Elizabethton; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Tuelle and Hannah Faith Julian both of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Deloach was a Butler native and a son of the late Nat and Pearl Whaley Deloach.

He was a retired painter and farmer.

Mr. Deloach was a World War II Army veteran. He received two Purple Hearts, the Oak Leaf Cluster and four Bronze Service Stars.

Mr. Deloach was a member of Pierce Baptist Church, Butler.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Manuel Deloach and Spencer Deloach.

Survivors include three sisters, Ina Mae Deloach, of the home, Pauline Poole, Elizabethton, and Effie Garland, Butler; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Nat and Pearl Whaley Deloach. She was a retired employee of Levi Strauss, Mountain City. She was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the church choir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. Garland, October 21, 2005; by three brothers, Manuel, Robert and Spencer Deloach; and two sisters: Pauline Poole and Ina Mae Deloach.

Survivors include a daughter & son-in-law: Elizabeth & Junior McQueen, Butler; A Son: Bobby Garland, Butler. Four Grandchildren: Todd Garland, Butler, Amy Phillips and her husband, Eddy, Mountain City, Jason McQueen, Butler, and Candice Garland, Elizabethton; Several Nieces & Nephews; Five Sisters-In-Law; Her Special Friends: Bonnie Stout, Grace Glover and Bernice Garland.

Retha Mae Whaley Hatley, 96, of Butler, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, April 1, 2018, at her residence after an extended illness.
A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late Carter and Maggie Arnold Whaley.
Mrs. Hatley was a homemaker. She loved to work in her garden and loved to baby-sit with children in her community. She was a member of Elk River Baptist Church where she loved to work with children during Vacation Bible School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Ray Hatley, in 1962, and a grandson, James Hatley.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Lynda Hatley, Butler; a granddaughter, Teresa Hodge and husband Russell, Butler; a great-granddaughter and husband, Amber and Garrett Vankleeck, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and her cat, Gray.
Funeral services for Retha Mae Whaley Hatley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Toby Rainbolt officiating. Carl Whaley, 85, of Butler, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at his residence, following a brief illness. Carl was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Dana and Amy Gentry Whaley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Reece Whaley; three brothers, Robert, George and Bill Whaley; and a great-granddaughter, Draven Dillard. Carl retired as a construction worker and was a member of Sink Valley Baptist Church. He enjoyed riding around, going to McDonald's and fishing. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Phyllis Whaley Slemp, of the home; three grandchildren, Beth Smalling, of Hampton, Justin Slemp, of the home, and Jason Slemp, of Butler; and six great-grandchildren, William Dillard, Japan (U.S. Navy), Austin Dillard, of the home, Christian and Savannah Chambers, both of Roan Mountain, and Abby and Emma Slemp, both of Elizabethton. Mr. Whaley was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Henry and Clydia Timbs Whaley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Couch Whaley, September 19, 1999, and four brothers, Ellie, Leonard, Glen and Ed Whaley.
Mr. Whaley was a retired pipe fitter with Bristol Metals. He had taught Sunday School for the past 50 years, having perfect attendance for the past 35 years, and was presently teaching the Bethany Class of Hunter First Baptist Church where he was also an ordained deacon. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union Local 538 and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Mike and Lockiey Whaley Deloach. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Campbell Deloach, in 1980, by six brothers and two sisters.

He was a retired construction worker.

Survivors include a son, David Deloach, Elizabethton; two daughters: Carolyn Deloach Price and Elizabeth Deloach Reece, both of Hickory, N.C.; two sisters: Frances Deloach Demolski, Tampa, Fla.; and Rose Fest, Calif.; four grand grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - Master Sergeant James Andrew Whaley, US Army (Ret.), age 77, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

James was born in Butler, Tennessee to the late David Clifford Whaley and Rosa Lee Lunceford Whaley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Jeanette Deloach Whaley; and his brother, Jerry Wayne Whaley.

James was a graduate of Hampton High School, where he had played football and basketball. He was a United States Army veteran of 22 years, during which he did two tours in the Korean War and three tours in the Vietnam War. James was a Green Beret and spent over 16 years overseas on duty. James received several awards during his service time including, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, RVN Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Army Commendation Medal 3D OLC, RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), 4 Overseas Service Bars, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Master Aircraft Crewman Badge, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was known affectionately by his VA co-workers as the "popcorn man." James attended Long Hollow Baptist Church and was a member of the DAV, the Shriners, and was a Mason. He was very proud of his military service and truly loved being a servant to his country and his community, he also loved his church and his church family and enjoyed fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory include his fiancé, whom he loved dearly and would have married in January 2018, Lavonia Potter Austin, of the home; three sisters, Dorothy Deaton, of Elizabethton and Edith Brown Watson and Mary Stout, both of Indianapolis, Indiana. James is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and Lavonia's great niece, Emma, who he called "sweet pea."

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Master Sergeant James Andrew Whaley will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Ray Stockton and Rev. Ray Green, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sounds of Victory and Margaret Calderon.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton; or at the residence at other times.

The funeral service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Full military honors will be accorded by the United States Army and the Carter County Honor Guard. Mr. Deloach was a native of Carter County and a son of Mildred Peeks Deloach, of Elizabethton, and the late Spencer Deloach. He was a mechanic with Austin's Garage.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two sons, Andy Deloach and Steve Deloach, both of Elizabethton; two daughters, Wendy Deloach and Renee Deloach, both of Elizabethton; two brothers, Larry Deloach, Elizabethton, and Johnny Deloach, Watauga; one sister, Doris Cates, Elizabethton; one half-sister, Melissa Hall, Johnson City; a special friend, Ronnie Mottern, of the home; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Barbara Smith, 72, of Butler, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord and those who passed before her on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at Hillview Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Ray Herbert and Nora Campbell Whaley. Barbara was a caring, sweet and loving sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church. Barbara enjoyed flowers, gardening, fishing and taking care of the home. She loved to go to yard sales and flea markets, also.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, James Leonard Smith; son, Bobby G. Whaley; sister, Bonnie Clawson; brother-in-law, Homer Clawson; sister-in-law, Molly Clawson; and a special niece, Nora Lee Campbell.
Those left to cherish her memory include her grandchildren, Cody Ray Whaley, Johnathan Robert Whaley and Katie Lynn Whaley; sister, Linda Campbell and husband Robert; two brothers, Bobby Ray Whaley Sr. and wife Fannie Jane of Butler and Luther Whaley and wife Bernice of Elk Mills; aunt, Lennis Bunton; special nephew, Bobby Ray Whaley Jr.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At the request of Barbara there will only be a graveside service to honor the life of Barbara Smith that will be conducted on Wednesday, November 13, at 2 p.m. at the Lakeview Cemetery, Butler, Tenn., with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Active pallbearers will be Bobby Ray Whaley Jr., Johnathan Whaley, Cody Whaley, Mason Campbell, George Davenport and Doug Hatley. Honorary pallbearers will be Katie Whaley, James Whaley and Jason Whaley.

Shirley Diana Poole, 67, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Bertha Rainbolt Whaley.
Shirley was formerly employed by C & A Lingerie and Ritchie’s. She loved to sing. Diana was a former member of Little Milligan Baptist Church but lately attended First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Reinhart, and a brother, Dwight Whaley.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Scotty and Martina Poole, Elizabethton; one grandson, Matthew Poole, Clover, S.C.; one great-granddaughter, December Poole; one sister and brother-in-law, Claudette and Jim Campbell, Butler; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Music will be provided by Tony Rominger. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Butler. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be residents of Courtyard Apartments and her special friend, Linda Deloach. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the Carter County EMS and the staff of the ER at Johnson City Medical Center.

ELIZABETHTON - Del Whaley, 64, Elizabethton passed away Sunday March 3, 2019 at his residence.

Born October 31, 1954 in Johnson City to the late Dewey L. & Gracie Mae Couch Whaley. He was a graduate of Unaka High School and East Tennessee State University with a degree in Business Management. Del was a Pharmacy Tech with Wal Mart, Elizabethton. He was a former TSSAA official. He was a Non-Denominational Christian. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son Patrick Broach.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years Caroline King Whaley. A Step Daughter: Erica Stewart. Two Grandchildren: Stephanie Shea Stacey (Josh) and Sydnee Blake Thier (David). Six Great Grandchildren: Graeson Hunnel, Bishop Thier, Kuechly Thier, Alyvia Thier, Hadley Stacey and Easton Stacey. His Brother: D.L. Whaley (Martha). Several Nieces & Nephews. His Mother-In-Law; Madeline King. His fur baby Poshi.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Bob Couch and Rev. H.C. Couch officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by David Whaley. Active Pallbearers will be: Zak Morris, Dewey Whaley, David Whaley, Tim Mack, David Thier and Ray Ashley. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brandon Coomer, Josh Stacy and fellow workers at Wal Mart, Elizabethton. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Ashley Patton and his Physicians.
