    James L. Bowers, 96, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, from Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center of Elizabethton. James was born in Carter County on June 18, 1920 to the late Martin C. Bowers and Sylvia Davidson Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary, and four brothers, Ralph, Condon, Richard "Pete" and Ben.
    James retired as a surveyor for the City of Elizabethton and was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Degree in Forestry. James enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.
    Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Letta Sue Berry Bowers, of the home; a step-son, Lynn Surratt and wife Anna; a step-daughter, Lisa Surratt Sprague of Elizabethton; step-grandchildren, Matthew B. Smith and wife Beth of Prestonburg, Ky., Christopher Smith and wife Stephanie of Flat Rock, N.C., and Brock Surratt of Elizabethton; and four step-great-grandchildren, Rowan Smith of Flat Rock, N.C., Callie Austin of Prestonburg, Ky., Cora Smith of Prestonburg, Ky., and Dillon Smith of Flat Rock, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    A service to honor the life of James L. Bowers will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Matthew Smith, step-grandson, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Christopher Smith, step-grandson. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the residence at any time. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19, at Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Kurt Bowers, Lynn Surratt, Bryan Smith, Christopher Smith, Rev. Matthew Smith and Brock Surratt. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of the City of Elizabethton, Mike Smith, Calvin Caldwell and Danny Smith. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at 10:15 a.m. Friday to go in procession.

    MARTIN BOWERS' CHILD DIES IN JOHNS-HOPKINS
    Mary Bowers, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bowers of this city, died last night in the Johns-Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she had been a patient for the past week.
    The youngster had been critically ill for some time and was taken to Baltimore last week where she underwent an operation. Her mother was at her bedside when she died. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bowers, who survive her, along with five brothers and other relatives. She is the niece of Prof. E. L. Bowers, superintendent of city schools.
    The body will arrive in this city tomorrow with funeral arrangements to be announced later.

    MARY FRANCES BOWERS
    Funeral services for Mary Frances Bowers, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Bowers, will be conducted from the First M. E. Church tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. W. F. Pitts, Rev. H. C. Hopkins, Rev. C. L. Bowden and Rev. E. M. Umbach officiating.
    Interment will be made inn the Shelby Hills cemetery in Bristol.
    Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Bowers, five brothers, Condon, James, Ralph, Richard and Benjamin. She was the niece of E. L. Bowers, superintendent of city schools.
    Active pall bearers will be Dr. J. C. Bowers, C. M. Rose, H. C. Crumley, John A. Shoun, Thomas Dugger and R. A. Brumit. Flower bearers will include Martha Jean Rose, Betty Sammons, Mildred Crabtree, Arleen Crumley, Anne Johnson, Jean Boers, Kathryn Bennett, Ruth Hart and Jo Ann Goode.
    Mary Frances was a student of the sixth grade. She entered Johns-Hopkins hospital in Baltimore last Tuesday for treatment and underwent an operation from which she died Monday night.
    The body was returned to Elizabethton today.

    Richard "Pete" N. Bowers, age 84, of Elizabethton, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013, at the Asbury Place of Johnson City.

    He was born in Carter County, Tennessee, to the late Martin C. and Sylvia Davidson Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph Bowers, Ben Bowers and M.C. Bowers Jr.; and one sister, Mary Bowers.

    He was retired from Bowers Brothers Real Estate and worked part time at Office Max in Johnson City. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton, the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce and the Merchant Marines.

    Survivors include one brother, James L. Bowers and wife, Sue, of Elizabethton; three nephews, Mark Bowers, of Afton, VA, Kirk Bowers, of Christiansburg, VA, and Lynn Surratt, of Elizabethton; and one niece, Lisa Sprague, of Elizabethton, TN.

    A special thank you to the Asbury Place of Johnson City for the love and care given to Mr. Bowers and also to Dr. Kellie Sorrell.

    The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 P.M. Monday. January 7, 2013, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Friends may also call at the residence of his brother, James L. Bowers, 164 Starlight Drive, Elizabethton, at any time..
