Mrs. Mae Deloach, 93, 413 Peachtree Lane, Elizabethton, died Friday, October 29, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

Mrs. Deloach was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late Arch and Tish Sluder Lipford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Deloach, in 1973, a daughter, Julie Carr, a son, Herbert Deloach, two grandsons, five brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Deloach had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a member of the Cobbs Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruby Morton, Lula Bell Frazier and Joan Jarrett, all of Elizabethton, and Betty Stevens, Hampton; two sons, Buddy Deloach and Clif Deloach, both of Elizabethton; and one sister, Beulah Kyte, Butler. Sixteen grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Beulah Lee Lipford Kyte, 87, Butler, went home to be with her Lord Thursday, October 3, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family. A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late Archiebald and Latitia Sluder Lipford. She was a retired employee of Timberland Boot Manufacturing Company, Mountain City. Beulah loved her family, loved to quilt and work in her garden. She was a member of the Cobbs Creek Baptist Church and the Sanctuary Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Haskiel Reece Kyte, August 21, 2001; by three brothers: Jess, Homer and Fred Lipford; Two Sisters: Cassie Green and Mae Deloach; and by three infant brothers and three infant sisters. Survivors include her children: Barbara Kyte "B.K." McCloud and her husband, Jim, Oxford, North Carolina, Garry G. Kyte and wife, Barbara, Butler, and Nyoka Kyte Weaver and her husband, Melvin, Butler; One Grandson: Alan Todd Kyte; Several Nieces & Nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 5, 2013, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Alan Koch officiating. Interment will follow in Butler Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. He was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had lived in Bristol since 1954. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist church.

JOHNSON CITY - Mary Lydia Matherly, 87, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at her residence. Born in Newland, NC, she was the daughter of the late David and Mary Cardwell Sluder.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Murel Ed Matherly, and all of her brothers and sisters.

Mary was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church, as well as Beta Sigma Phi of Johnson City. She and her late husband Murel were co-owners of Clutch and Brake Supply Company, Johnson City and Clutch and Brake of Asheville until they retired in 2004.

She is survived by her daughters: Mary Gail Matherly Keown (Larry) of Calhoun, GA and Melissa Matherly Clemons (Phil) of Kingsport; son, Roger Matherly (Mary June) of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Josh Keown (Brandi) of Resaca, GA and Lindsey Keown of Woodstock, GA; Katherine Clemons Conaway (Chris) of Atlanta, GA and Suzanne Clemons of Kingsport; great-grandchildren: Jessica Lockard and Harper Grace Keown; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

A Celebration of Mary's Life will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Rufus Biddix and Rev. Mike Dickerson officiating. Musical selections will be provided by Susan Hoover. The family will greet friends to share memories from 5:00 PM until the service hour. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Larry Keown, Phil Clemons, Josh Keown, Bill Sluder, Buford Stone, and Don Rankin. A native of Avery County, she was born March 12, 1918 a daughter of the late John Andrew and Flora Hurt Sluder.

She was a member of Vale Freewill Baptist Church.

Elsie enjoyed reading, gardening and preserving food through freezing and canning. She loved growing and arranging flowers.

She worked many years for the Sluder Floral Company.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Coye Calhoun; sister, Mildred Benfield; and a grandson, Coye Yates.

Left to cherish her memory are: a son, Doyle Calhoun and wife Grace of Newland; a daughter, Glenda Yates and husband Alfred of Banner Elk; three sisters-in-law, Clara Wise of Nebo, N.C., Lucille Sparks of Canton, O.H., Nell Cuthbertson and husband, Skies of Crossnore; three grandchildren, Nancy Thomason, Andrea Shakarian and Christie Yates; six great grandchildren, Jessica Yates, Aaron Yates, Alex Yates, Jordan Thomason, Tori Thomason and Zane Shakarian; many other reatives and friends.

Ronald Sluder, 96, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at his residence.
A native of Newland, N.C., he was the son of the late Galen and Ida Waycaster Sluder. "Pap" retired from growing and selling shrubbery. He was a 20-year U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He loved to feed animals.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Barbara Doty, and the mother of his children, Marie Simerly Sluder.

The family will receive friends at the Rhododendron Chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at the residence of a son, Keith "Joe" Sluder, at other times. The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service in the Johnson Cemetery of the Crabtree Community, Roan Mountain, on Tuesday. ELIZABETHTON - Jackson Burl "Jack" Lipford, 79, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, February 9, 2018 at his residence.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late James Homer & Addie Crowe Lipford. Jack attended Elizabethton High School. He was retired as a Supervisor at Industrial Piping, Charlotte, North Carolina after 35 years of service. Jack was a Mason, Shriner and a member of the Oasis Temple. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: James Lipford, Jr and Basil Lipford and three sisters: Beulah Snavely, Shirley Chapel and Roberta Dumpy's. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years: Judy Garland Lipford. His children: Michael & Phylis Lipford, Concord, North Carolina, Tammy & Gary Wallace and Todd & Pam Lipford all of Charlotte, North Carolina. 7 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren. One Brother: Robert "Bob" Lipford and two sisters: Mary King and Geraldine Vandeventer. Several nieces & nephews.

Mr. Charles E. Lipford, 86, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Jesse and Gladys Collins Lipford and was born in Carter County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty-one years, Nora Grace Heaton Lipford on November 8, 2008; and a sister, Jo Lipford Smith.
Mr. Lipford was a graduate of Hampton High School, served in the United States Air Force as a radar technician during the Korean War, and graduated from East Tennessee State Teachers College. He taught algebra at Elizabethton High School and retired in 1987 after thirty years of service and was the first teacher in the Elizabethton City School System to be inducted into the Imagination Library Teacher's Hall of Fame.
He was a member of Siam Baptist Church where he served the church as a trustee. Mr. Lipford was an avid fan of both football and basketball at Elizabethton High School and attended most every home game. His hobbies included woodworking, reading and photography and he loved spending time in these activities. He also loved to keep in touch with his friends and former students using social media.
He is survived by a sister, Jessie Montgomery and her husband, Carroll, Elizabethton; two brothers, Gary "Butch" Lipford and his wife, Nancy, Elizabethton; Jimmy Lipford, Elizabethton; his nieces and nephews, Janie McKinney, David Smith, Pat Yelton, Pam Campbell, Becky Raulston, Chipper Montgomery, Gary A. ELIZABETHTON - Jimmy Lipford, age 84, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 4, 2018, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jimmy was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Jesse and Gladys Collins Lipford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Hampton Lipford; a granddaughter, Robin Yelton; a sister, Jo Smith; and a brother, Charles Lipford.

Jimmy was a loving father and grandfather and retired as a drywall finisher and painter. He was a member of Stoney Creek Church of Christ and enjoyed gardening, yard work, Braves baseball, and supporting his grandchildren's activities.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Pamela Campbell and Pat Yelton, both of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Jordan Yelton and Loran Campbell, both of Elizabethton; a sister, Jessie Montgomery and husband Carroll, of Elizabethton; a brother, Gary "Butch" Lipford and wife Nancy, of Elizabethton; a special friend, Linda Crow, of Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A native of Shady Valley, she was a daughter of the late Everett Edgar and Grace Robinette Sluder. She had lived most of her life in Carter County.

She was a former employee of the Magnavox Company. Mrs Pierce loved to embroider, quilt, work jigsaw puzzles and take care of her grandchildren. She was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John B. Pierce Sr.; a daughter: Nellie Pierce Grant; and a sister, Mable McQueen.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband W. Basil Eugene “Gene” Sluder, 78, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at the Community Living Center at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was born November 30, 1944 in Shady Valley to the late Carl and Brookie Wood Sluder. Gene was a 1964 graduate of Johnson County High School. He proudly served his country as a Marine during the Vietnam Era. He loved God and his country fervently. He retired from the City of Titusville, Fla., and was known to his co-workers as “Super Man.” He was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Veronica Hensz Sluder, April 10, 2022; his brothers, Glenn Sluder, Jack Sluder and Walter Sluder; and his sisters, Myrtle Hutchinson, Mildred Upchurch, Adelphia “Deb” French, Dora Lee Lunceford and Darla Evans. Doyle A Calhoun, 87, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Doyle was born on July 18, 1935 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Coye A. Calhoun and the late Elsie Sluder Calhoun.

Doyle was a graduate of Newland High School and had attended NC State and ETSU. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Doyle worked in Printing and Graphic Art. He was in charge of the Metropolitan Atlanta Combined Federal Campaign, and was awarded for his work in the Action/Georgia DHR Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent Program. He was recognized for Outstanding Achievement as Printing Coordinator for GSA.

In his youth, Doyle, was a member of the Vale Freewill Baptist Church in Newland. He was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., for 35 years and was currently a member of the Cranberry Baptist Church.

Doyle was known for his gourmet cooking and he enjoyed painting, bowling, archery, hunting, gardening, making wine, fishing, photography, bird watching, four wheelers, boating, making fishing lures, skiing, dancing and loved Mexican food. He was also a member of the Avery County Christmas Tree Farmers Association, National Rifle Association and the American Hunters Association.

He was preceded in death by his father, Coye A Calhoun; mother, Elsie S. Calhoun; nephew, Coye Yates and a niece, Christie Yates.

Doyle leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 63 years, Grace Ollis Calhoun; two daughters, Nancy Calhoun (Gary) Thomason Whenman of Newland, NC, Andrea Calhoun (Jesse) Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jordan Thomason of Newland, NC, Tori Thomason of Newland, NC, Zane Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Stella Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; great great grandchild, Ruby Childress of Newland, NC; and a sister, Glenda C. (Alfred) Yates of Newland, NC.

Services for Doyle A Calhoun were held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 10, from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Lucas McKinney, David Burnop and Gene Honeycutt officiating. Interment followed in the Fork Mountain Cemetery, where Doyle was the Manager for more than 28 years.

He was the son of James H. and Audrey Lois Roberts Lipford.

Mr. Lipford had lived several years in Atlanta, Ga. He worked for Greyhound and was retired due to disability. He was a member of the East Fairview Free Will Baptist Church.

He was a Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel.

Graveside services and interment were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Military Honors to be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166.

Mr. Bill Deloach, 55, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was the son of the Charlotte Burrow Deloach of Elizabethton and the late William Buddy Deloach.
Mr. Deloach was employed by Volunteer Floor Covering, Roan Mountain, and was of the Baptist Faith. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren and was interested in old cars.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 10 years, Michelle Malone Deloach, of the home; a daughter, Leah Deloach, Johnson City; a step-daughter, Trista Freeman, of the home; a step-son, Codey Carter, of the home; two grandchildren, Hannah Norris, the light of his life, of the home; Payton Norris, Johnson City; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Rick Walker, Elizabethton; a nephew, Travis Walker, Elizabethton; a special uncle, Roger Burrow, Elizabethton; his special mother-in-law, Evelyn Malone, Bluff City; and several other aunts and uncles. Two special friends, Ricky Hatley and Keith "Myron" Montgomery also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Deloach will be conducted on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Ben Sheets officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joel Crisp. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, on Wednesday prior to the service, at his home, or at the home of his mother, at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Myron Montgomery, Rick Hatley, Kenny Bouton, Rob Miller, Chris Blumenstock, and Randy Cross. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Depew and his fellow employees of Volunteer Floor Covering.

Clifford "Allen" Deloach Jr., 49, of Johnson City, died Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a native of Carter County, son of the late Clifford Deloach Sr. and Loretta Peters Deloach. Allen had worked for the Service Master Co. and was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Gary Delph Sr.

Survivors include: his mother, Loretta Deloach, of Elizabethton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Tammy and Steve Bentley, of Elizabethton, and Connie Delph, of Joneborough; a niece, Christy Manning, of Johnson City; two nephews, Stephen Bentley, of Elizabethton, and Gary Delph Jr., of Johnson City; two special friends, Lisa Nunley and Erin Conklin.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, July 23, 2012, in the North Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Pastor Tony Trott.

MORGANTON, NC - We are saddened to announce the passing of Thomas Phil Crosswhite, age 74, on Saturday, May 20, 2023 in Morganton, North Carolina. He was born November 30, 1948 in Shady Valley, Tennessee to the late Elmer Wade Crosswhite and Mina Lou Owens Crosswhite. Thomas was a graduate of Johnson County High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former employee of Burlington Industries.

Thomas loved traveling and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Linda Rodefer.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 35 years, Melody Ann Wilson Crosswhite. His children: Jennifer Buckles of Elizabethton, TN, Kelly Stewart of Elizabethton, TN, and Bobby Stewart of Morganton, North Carolina. His siblings: Ethel Hardin of Elizabethton, TN and Betty Villarreal of Mountain City, TN, Garmol Wade Crosswhite of Elizabethton, TN, and Elmer Forrest of Bristol, TN. His grandchildren: Abby Shelton, Austin Stewart, Madison Stewart, Blake Brown and Madilyn Brown. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service for Mr. Crosswhite will be conducted Friday, May 26, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Crosswhite cemetery with military honors to be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Bobby Stewart, Kelly Stewart, Jason Buckles, Freddy Villarreal, Austin Stewart and Blake Brown.
