Samuel Carter DeLoach grew up in Carter County, Tennessee. Ha and his family moved to Johnson County, TN on 1 Sep 1881. He was a farmer, a carpenter, and a Baptist minister. He was one of the first ministers at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church in Butler, Johnson County, Tennessee. He was a minister at the Pleasant Home Baptist Church near Laurel Bloomery, and took part in the construction of that Church. His Johnson County home was in Campbell Hollow, near Doeville. His daughter, Celia, her husband Johnny Heaton, and their family lived with Samuel for several years. His youngest son, Joseph Alexander, his wife Dovie C. Williams Arnold, and their family lived there at the time of his death, and they inherited the property. Samuel and his wife Louisa Garrison are buried in a small family cemetery on a hill overlooking the place where their house once stood.

Joe DeLoach was a lumberjack, saw mill operator and woodsman. When he was in his early 20's (in about 1905), he travelled to Oregon to work in the Redwood groves. For reasons unknown, he worked instead on a cattle ranch in Dallas, Oregon. In conversations with his son J.A. Mike DeLoach, he stated that he learned to break-in new broncos, and did all the normal work of a ranch hand. He said that on most days, he could see Mount Hood off to the east. He returned to East Tennessee in about 1909. It was said that he was probably the best horse rider in Johnson County, and that if anyone one had problems busting in a new horse, they would call on him. He worked at and operated saw mills in the following locations: Schyler Hollow - 1* miles from Campbell Hollow up Doe Creek. Doe Creek - * mile below Rambo's Mill. Doe Creek - * mile above Rambo's Mill on opposite side of creek. Doe Creek (Laurels) - 3 miles south of the DeLoach home. Campbell Hollow - 1* miles above home. Norris Hollow - * mile west of home. Robert D. Camubell[sic] age 72 of Butler, Sink Valley community, died in Johnson City Memorial Hospital Tuesday noon after a short illness. He was a native of Johnson County, a retired farmer and member of the Sink Valley Baptist Church.

A native of Johnson County, TN, she had resided in Carter County since 1929 and was the daughter of the late Jack L. and Sally Deloach Church. She was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, a former sales representative for Happy Valley Memorial Park and former Cafeteria Manager of Elizabethton High School. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Peters, June 1978; five sisters, Sanna Pleasant, Thelma Cress, Grace Grindstaff, Eula Williams and Georgia Ward. Survivors include five daughters and three sons-in-law, Pat and Reuben Payne, Knoxville, TN, Sue and Harry Farthing, Elizabethton, TN, Kathy and Lawrence Nunamaker, Columbus, OH, Dottie Peters, Chattanooga, TN, and Janet Denny, Elizabethton, TN; nine grandchildren, Laura Payne, Susan Henson, Harry Farthing, April Holsclaw, Mark Jensen, Rachel Jensen, Christie Nunamaker, Lori West and Shanna Denny. Nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service for Mrs. Laura Church Peters will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 5, 2005, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Brent Seals officiating. Interment will follow the service in Happy Valley Memorial Park. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Floy Heaton; one daughter, Phyllis Ann Heaton and one son, L. Q. Heaton, both of the home; four brothers, Sam, Lewis and Winifred Heaton all of Elizabethton, and Haddon Heaton of Boise, Idaho; and three sisters, Celeste Heaton, Martha Heaton and Mrs. Dencie Estep all of 401 North East Street, Elizabethton.
The body was moved to the home of the sisters Monday afternoon where it will remain until 12:00 noon Thursday when it will be taken to the church to lie-in-state until the funeral hour.

Word was received here this morning by relatives relating the death of Earl M. Heaton, son of the late John A. Heaton, at his home last night in Emmett, Idaho. He suffered a heart attack.
Earl is the brother of Police Officer Lewis Heaton, Paul, Windy, and Sam of this city, and of Haddon Heaton at Fort Jackson, S.C. He also has four sisters of this city, Misses Celestia, Martha, and Dencie Heaton and Mrs. Landon Lyons.

Sam was probably named after Joseph Gervais. Joseph was a French-Canadian, later American, pioneer settler and trapper in the Pacific Northwest. Joseph joined the Pacific Fur Company, a venture owned by John Jacob Astor. After trapping throughout the Oregon territiory for the Hudson's Bay Company,[7] Gervais permanently settled on French Prairie at the site of what is now the town of Gervais. This is the area where Sam's father Joseph Alexander DeLoach came seeking employment between 1910 and 1920. It is more than a coincidence that Joseph named his first two sons Gervais and Astor.

About a year after the DeLoach family moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, Sam officially changed his name to Samuel Carter, the name of his grandfather. Sam joined the Civil Conservation Corps after the DeLoach family moved to Johnson City. Following a tour of duty at the Morristown, TN, camp, he attended East Tennesse State Normal College for a quarter. He dropped out of college, and had a series of odd jobs. Following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was drafted into the Army. After reporting to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, for Basic Training, he found that he did not like Army life and decided to come home to Tennessee. After a short period at home, he was arrested for being Absent Without Leave, and returned to Fort Oglethorpe. Realizing that he was going to have to stay in the Army, he began applying himself rigorously to his military tasks, and was soon selected for Officer Candidate School (OCS). By the end of WW II, he had advanced to the grade of Major in the Transportation Corps. Following the war, there was an Army-wide reduction of force, and Sam was given the rank of Master Sergeant and retained on active Army duty. When the Korean War broke out, he was returned to officer status, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He retired at this rank in 1956. Following his Army career, Sam became a real estate salesman in the Monterrey Bay area of California. He did quite well in this business, but after several years, found the long hours and weekend work distasteful. He and June sold their home in Monterrey, and moved to Walnut Creek, CA. After a short stint in full retirement, he got a job as a security guard at the Oakland Army Depot. He retired from this job when he was in his early 60's.

Mike DeLoach grew up in Campbell Hollow, near Doeville in Johnson County, Tennessee. He attended Doeville Elementary School and the Watauga Academy in Butler, Tennessee. When his family moved to Washington County in about 1934, he attended Jonesborough High School, where he graduated with honors and was the president of his class. His first employment was with the North American Rayon Corporation in Elizabethton, Tennessee. He grew tired of the shift work and working conditions at NARC, and quit that job in 1952. After holding a couple of temporary jobs as a used car salesman and working in the Circulation Department of the Johnson City Press Chronicle, he became a full time carpenter. He worked for several construction contractors, and later became a Building Trades Instructor at Daniel Boone High School in Gray, Tennessee. During his life, he was an active member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Johnson City, and the Fairview Methodist Church in the Fairview Community near Jonesborough. He was the first Cubmaster for Pack 38, sponsored by the Calvary Presbyterian Church, and was instrumental in making their scouting program a success. He was active in community projects and church commitees in Fairview. One of his lasting legacies was his love for the outdoors, a love which he deeply instilled in all his children.

R.D. was a member of the Jericho Shrine Temple in Kingsport, TN, and the Johnson County Shrine Club and was a member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679 for 64 years. Mr. Campbell taught in the Johnson County School System for over 31 years at various schools and was a principal and teacher for more than 23 years. He held several County positions in Johnson County including, Justice of the Peace, County Court Magistrate for 18 years, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the County Court, County Executive, Probate Judge and Juvenile Judge. He was a member of the board of director's first Tennessee/Virginia development board, where he was chairman 5 years and vice chairman 1 year and on the Upper East Tennessee Human Development Agency for 15 years. He was on the Tri State Grower's board of directors for 33 years. ELIZABETHTON — Anna Mae Deloach McCoury, 85, Ivy Hall Nursing Home, formerly of 183 Rosewood Circle, Elizabethton, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. She was a housewife, Mom and Nannie. Mrs. McCoury was a Charter Member of Harvest Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry McCoury; and Five Brothers, Clyde, Junior, Billy, Has and J.G. Deloach.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Estella Grindstaff Deloach. She had lived in Washington, D.C., for several years before returning to Elizabethton. She was of the Baptist Faith.
She loved to read, quilt, cook and work in her garden.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters: Anna Mae McCoury, Pauline Gentry, Hazel Pleasant and Mary Cassar; and five brothers: Clyde Deloach, Dana Hass Deloach, J.G. Deloach, William Deloach and Roscoe Deloach Jr.
Survivors include a sister: Laura Deloach of the home; a brother: Floyd "Bobby" Deloach, of the home; and several nieces & nephews.

Mary Deloach Cassar, 81, Salisbury, North Carolina, passed away Friday, December 11, 2009, at Autumn Care in Salisbury, NC.

Born April 14, 1928, in Johnson County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach.

She retired from the food service industry after 45 years of service and along with her late husband, Renard, were active members of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee. She has been a resident of Salisbury, NC for ten years and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Renard (Ron) Cassar, on December 21, 1976, and by five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her three daughters, Rebecca Terry and her husband, Glenn, of Salisbury, NC, Stella Isenberg and her husband, Roy, of Gray, Tennessee, Sharon Pontius and her husband, Brian, of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Laura and Elmina Deloach, and a brother, Floyd Deloach, all from Elizabethton, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

She was a beautician and later worked at the Bemberg Corporation for several years. Her last employment was in the cleaning department of Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was of the Baptist Faith. Edward Kenneth Snyder passed away December 29, 2008.

He was born February 27, 1928, in Slab Fork, West Virginia, the eldest son of Edward Snyder, of Boone, NC, and Hattie DeLoach, of Doeville, TN.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his infant brother, Bruce Snyder; his brother, Jim Snyder, San Francisco, CA; and his sister-in-law, Cora Snyder, Erwin, TN.

Ed's father was a coal miner in Beckley, WV. He became suddenly ill with spinal meningitis and passed away when Ed was only 8 years old. His mother, Hattie, moved the children to Elizabethton in October 1936 to be near the relatives. Ed grew up in Elizabethton, attending local schools.

He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and was stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois, and served in Pearl Harbor on the USS Sante Fe. He was awarded the Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal. He has been a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Capt. Lynn H. Folsom Post No. 2166, Elizabethton, TN, since 1948.

After returning to Elizabethton from his naval service, he became interested in a career in custom sign design and manufacturing. He worked for several months as an apprentice at a sign company in Athens, GA. Returning to Elizabethton, he became employed in Kingsport, TN, with Felix Sign Company. Advancing through the years, he became General Manager of the company. During this time he received his electrical degree and drafting and welding degrees. He remained with the company until 1962. He also obtained his Tennessee Contractors License.

His decision to build and open his own sign company came in 1962 in Johnson City, TN. Through the years the company enjoyed great success in building, designing, manufacturing and installation of electrical sign displays throughout the upper East Tennessee region under Ed's leadership as owner and president. He traveled the area purchasing and leasing many locations for outside billboard advertising. Ed was a "hands on" manager and one of his major projects was the restoration of the Paramount Theatre Marquee in Bristol, TN.

He was a member of the World Sign Association, NESA, and received his general contractor's license. Ed believed that the design, manufacturing and installation of every sign was indeed a work of art and image creation. He took great pride in creating Snyder Signs, Inc. Due to his ill health he retired in 1992. Seeing the company progress and grow into a second generation company has been a time of enjoyment for Ed.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Nancy. He has two daughters, Carol Snyder, Johnson City, TN, Kay Meade and husband, Mike, Columbia, SC; one son, Rod Snyder and wife, Mary Ann, Piney Flats, TN; step-daughter, Denise Galloway, Cleveland, TN; step-daughter, Jennifer Peters, Knoxville, TN; one sister, Pansy Hansen and husband, Dean, Hampton, TN; two brothers, Ernest Snyder, Erwin, TN, and Frank Snyder, Glendale, CA; three grandchildren, Brent Shull, Johnson City, TN, Brooks Armistead, Johnson City, TN, and Matt Marshall, Johnson City, TN; nieces, D'An Hartman, Cincinnati, OH, Teresa Snyder, Erwin, TN, Kathy Snyder, Wilmington, NC; nephews, Jim Snyder, Wilmington, NC, Jerry Snyder, Erwin, TN, Greg Lange, Cincinnati, OH, and Chuck Lange, Cincinnati, OH; and many cousins throughout the local area.

ERWIN — Mr. Ernest C. Snyder, age 80, of 324 South Main Avenue, Erwin, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Snyder was a native of Charleston, West Virginia, moving as a young boy to Elizabethton, where he raised his family. He lived in Wilmington, North Carolina, for 23 years and has been a resident of Erwin since 1995. Mr. Snyder was a son of the late Edward and Hattie Day Snyder.

He was a Korean War U.S. Army Veteran. Mr. Snyder was of the Baptist Faith. He was a millwright working in Industrial Construction and had been employed for over 23 years with Tennessee Line and Twine in Elizabethton and retiring in 1995.

Mr. Snyder enjoyed working in his garage after retirement and also enjoyed restoring a 1966 Ford Mustang with his son, Jerry.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Mae Buchanan Snyder, in 2006; and brothers Ed, Jim and Bruce Snyder.

Survivors include: Sons, Jerry Snyder and wife, Amy, Erwin, James Snyder and wife, Sheri, Willard, North Carolina; Daughters, Jean Harmon and husband, Vaughn, and Teresa Snyder, all of Erwin, and Kathy Snyder, Charlotte, North Carolina; Brother, Frank Snyder and wife, Kathleen, California; Sister, Pansy Hanson and husband, Dean, Hampton; Thirteen grandchildren; Twelve great grandchildren; Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Fred was born May 17, 1937, in Elizabethton, TN, a son of Theodore Taft Day and Clara Emily Deloach Day. The family moved to Charleston in 1938, where his father was employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Fred attended North Charleston and Ladson Elementary schools and North Charleston High School. He was elected president of most of his Classes.
In 1955, Fred enlisted in the S.C. National Guard, Head Quarters, Head Quarters Company, 118th Infantry. During his high school senior year, Fred was elected Student Council co-president and state president of the 4-H club of South Carolina. While in the 4-H club, Fred was a local pioneer, raising goats for milk, sheep for wool and calves to help pay for college tuition.Fred entered the University of South Carolina in 1956. During Christmas Break 1958, his sophomore year, Fred was seriously injured in an automobile accident, leaving him a quadriplegic for the remainder of his life. As a result of the accident, the U.S. Army Ready Reserve honorably discharged Fred in 1959. After a period of rehabilitation at the Medical University of South Carolina, Fred was able to return to USC in September 1959. Fred was the first wheelchair bound person in the state to live on campus and graduate from college. He earned a degree in political science and attended law school. The assistance and care of roommates and fellow classmates at USC was a major factor that enabled him to continue and complete his education for which he was forever grateful. While at USC, Fred served as a page in the state legislature. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Kappa Sigma Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Sima Alpha, the International Relations Club, and the Euphradian Society, the Interfraternity Council, State Student Legislature Council, the Law School Honor Council and the Young Democrats Club. He was listed in Who's Who In Colleges and Universities. While attending USC after the crippling accident, Fred contacted the Vice President's wife, Lady Byrd Johnson, requesting her assistance in making USC, as well as other schools, accessible to the handicapped. The following week the Vice President sent a delegation from Washington, DC, to meet with Dr. Dill Beckham, head of the state vocational rehabilitation agency. They were able to prepare legislation which was presented to and introduced by state Senator Rembert Dennis. This marked the beginning of making all state-funded buildings accessible to the handicapped. This was a catalyst. The former President George H.W. Bush completed the job by making all government buildings nationwide accessible for the handicapped by passing the "American Disability Act" which had input from other sources. The "ADA" is the law of the land. This legislation provides access facilities such as ramps, sidewalks, etc., and opened the door for employment opportunities for the handicapped. Finally, after three years of searching and 436 applications, Fred was employed temporarily as a GS-1 at the Charleston Naval Supply Center as a Financial Management Analyst. James Clyburn, currently a U.S. Congressman, had received one of Fred's applications. Having been recently appointed director of the neighborhood Youth Corps in Charleston, he interviewed and offered Fred a one-year contract at the GS-6 level. Almost three months later, Fred received a call from the Department of State offering a career job. He relocated to Washington, DC, where he worked in the Department of State, Far East Bureau, and later in the Naval Electronics Systems Command, Naval Supply Commands and finally the U.S. Postal Service in the Financial and Budget Division. He did graduate work at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Fred received the outstanding handicapped employee award for the Washington, DC, area. In 1976 Fred retired from federal service and returned to his Ladson, SC, home and entered politics. He was elected to the first Berkeley County Council where he served on the Finance, Budget and Rules Committee. In 1983 he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, serving Berkeley and Dorchester counties and served on the public works and education committees and as legislative member of the board of trustees for Francis Marion University. Fred spent a considerable amount of time encouraging school students in his district to strive for good grades and to achieve perfect attendance, and each quarter presented certificates to students who met that criteria. He was named the Representative of the Year by the State Handicapped Citizens Association.In 1990, after his years in the legislature, Fred continued his public service, being elected by the legislature as the representative for the 1st Congressional District to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He served as chairman from 1993 to1996. As chairman, he also served on the Board of Directors for the State Rehabilitation Commission, the South Carolina Aquarium Advisory Board, South Carolina Research Authority and the Joint House and Senate Education Committee. He also served on the South Carolina Council on Vocational and Technical Education, transferred to C.H.E. by Governor Caroll Campbell. Fred was a member of Summerville Baptist Church, Sertoma, and a longtime member of the USC Alumni Association and the Gamecock Athletic Booster Club. Fred, being a quadriplegic for over 54 plus years, met his adversity "head on" through his youth and adulthood. Under the worst of times he never lost his personality and smile. Words cannot express the vigor and enthusiasm with which he approached life. He was always a source of inspiration to all who knew this remarkable man. He was blessed by god, a faithful family, friends, USC fellow classmates, faculty, relatives and devoted attendants. He was not a man with an idle mind; he was always exploring trends in gardening, music and literature. He developed and obtained a patent for a special wheelchair which he named "DITC" (Day Insert Travel Chair), that enabled handicapped individuals to board and sit in airplane, bus and train seats. He was committed to better government where he served with distinction in many capacities.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, James H., William J. and Jack T. Day; and a sister, Ruth Day; and last but not least, his loyal and faithful dog, Daisy May.
Surviving are a sister, Betty and her husband David Lightsey of Greenwood, SC, and six double first cousins, and three aunts and two uncles, a number of nieces and nephews, and devoted lifelong friends, such as Henry"Hank" Niles, Dale Hensley, Jon Mott, Ali Blalock and Lauri Hayes.

Sidney E. Pleasant Sr., 76, of Cocoa, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida.

Mr. Pleasant was born in Carter County, TN, but had lived in Florida since October of 1960. He was the son of the late Walter B. Pleasant Sr. and Sana Church Pleasant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter B. Pleasant Jr., William H. Pleasant and Jack L. Pleasant; and one sister, Ruby Pleasant Moore.

Mr. Pleasant was a retired police sergeant and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church in Cocoa, FL.

Survivors include his wife, Velma L. Sheffield Pleasant, of the home; two sons, Sidney E. Pleasant II, and John Pleasant and wife, Donna,, all of Cocoa, FL; one granddaughter, Sydney E. Pleasant, Cocoa, FL; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Sheffield and wife, Cathy, Morristown, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The committal and entombment service for Mr. Pleasant will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Sgt. Major Jack Church Cress (Retired), age 82, passed away on Saturday December 20, 2014, at Hillview Health Care Center, Elizabethton, TN, with his family by his side.
Jack was born October 29, 1932, the son of the late L.N. (Bud) and Thelma Church Cress of Neva, TN. He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence and Robert Cress; and a great-grandson, Shawn Wills.
Jack was retired from the United States Army after serving 21 years of service. He was very proud to be a solider and served his country with pride. Sergeant Major Cress served in the Korean and Vietnam War and also served in Desert Storm. He was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., Okinawa and Sendai, Japan, Hawaii, Germany, Presidio, San Francisco California, Fort McPherson, Ga., Fort Campbell and Fort Knox KY, and Fort Smith Arkansas. Jack was one of 18 soldiers that were sent from California to the 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, KY, to set up the first Data Processing Center Army wide.
Jack worked for Smith-Higgins Company in Johnson City as a Data-Processing manager for 10 years after retiring from the Army. He served Johnson County as purchasing agent for 5 years. The past 30 years Jack was self-employed as a tax preparer and book keeper.
Jack was a member of Vaught's Gap Baptist Church for 42 years, where he held the office of Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte Mink Cress, who lovingly cared for Jack and remained by his side throughout his lengthy illness; daughters: Katherine Lowman (Bob), Richmond, VA, Pamella Johnson (Rex), Elizabethton, TN, and Perriann Stanley (Jerry), Mountain City, TN; one sister, Margaret Cress, Mountain City, TN; four brothers: Joe Mack Cress, Mountain City, TN, John Cress, Morristown, TN, James Cress Midlothian, VA, and Sam Cress of Mountain City, TN; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Jack Dean Grindstaff, 83, Johnson City passed away Monday, December 10, 2012, in the Franklin Woods Community Hospital.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Wheeler G. and Grace Church Grindstaff. He had lived a number of years in Carter County before moving to Johnson City about 20 years ago.

He was a retired Truck Driver for Inland Container. Mr. Grindstaff was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church, Johnson City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Steven Grindstaff, June 16, 2011; by two brothers: Lowell Grindstaff and his wife, Pauline, and Howard Grindstaff; and a sister and her husband: Pansy & Ed Greer.

Marjorie Lyons Gass, age 74, 1982 Hwy. 81 South, Jonesborough, died Friday, January 4, 2008 in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following three-year illness.

She was a Carter County native and a daughter of the late Landon J. and Cora Heaton Lyons. Mrs. Gass was a member of Central Baptist Church, Johnson City. She had worked in the banking industry.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gass was preceded in death by five brothers: Roy, Earl, Clarence, Howard and Willie Lyons; and one sister: Armita Myers.

Mrs. Gass is survived by her husband: the Rev. Phil Gass, of the home; one daughter: Julie A. Gass, of the home; and two special nieces: Dr. Jane M. Jones and Jeannette Boswell.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Gass will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, January 7, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Dr. Ron Murray and Rev. Bill Warfield officiating. A native of Carter County, Rondall was the son of the late Samuel and Lucy Heaton. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren. Mr. Heaton proudly served his country in the United Stated Army. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and eating.

She was a member of the Republican Women's Committee. Barbara was appointed by former Governor Don Sundquist to the Tennessee State Medical Review Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis H. McElroy, January 2006; by her father and mother, Dencie Heaton Estep and Earl Estep; and a brother, Bill Heaton.

Mrs. Wilhoit was a homemaker as well as a loving mother and grandmother.

She was a 1971 graduate of Science Hill High School.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Wilhoit, and her brother, Keith Isenberg.

Betty Jo Bowers, age 80, of Oak Ridge, went to be with the Lord July 20, 2021. She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church where she was very involved with the children’s ministry and food pantry. Betty graduated from Johnson County High School in 1959 where she was a majorette. After graduating she attended nursing school in Banner Elk, NC becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. Nursing was her passion, inspiring her daughter and granddaughter to follow in her footsteps and pursue a career in nursing as well. Betty met her husband, Walter “Gus” Bowers in Banner Elk. They were married November 1961 and lived in Hampton, VA, later settling in Oak Ridge. Once there, Betty worked at Methodist Medical Center and West Mall Nursing Home before retiring from the Family Clinic after 34 years with them. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Oak Ridge for many years. One of Betty’s interests was traveling. She and Gus saw much of the Western United States together. She loved UT football. They always had season tickets and traveled to many bowl games. She also loved reading and was a frequent patron of the Oak Ridge Public Library. Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Laura Fritts. Survivors include husband of 60 years, Walter R. “Gus” Bowers; daughter, Cynthia Zoladz and husband, Joseph; grandchildren, Sara and Tyler Zoladz; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth & Brock; brothers, Paul Fritts and wife, Judy, and Jim Fritts; and nephews, Steve and Brian Fritts. Paul Fritts, Jr. age 72, went to be with the Lord on November 14, 2021. He was a member of Limestone Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a trustee for many years. He was very active in the church helping with the youth, the high school Sunday School class, and annual Youth Retreats. He graduated from Johnson County High School in 1966. After graduation, Paul went to work for Pharmaseal Laboratory where he was a supervisor. Then he was called to serve his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War where he earned the Bronze Star. Later, his work called him to be a supervisor of Environmental Services at the Veterans Hospital where he worked until his retirement. He loved fishing at the “BigRock,” UT football and helping “his boys.” Most of all he loved God’s word.
He was a very loving husband, father, and Papaw to his family. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul Fritts, Sr. and Laura Campbell Fritts; his sister, whom he loved very much, Betty Jo Bowers.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Bailey Fritts; two sons, Paul Steven Fritts and wife Scarlett and Brian David Fritts and wife Melissa; six grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremiah, Emily, Journee, Alexis and Nevaeh Fritts; Brother, whom he loved so much, Jim Fritts and wonderful in laws and their families, his loving Church family and friends, and special grand dog “Gizmo.”

Dean Campbell age 69, of RD Campbell Road passed away unexpectedly March 7, 2018. He was born on August 22nd, 1948 to the late R.D. Campbell and Wilma Stansberry Campbell.In addition to his parents he was preceded by a grandchild, Tracy Potter. He enjoyed watching Nascar, Tennessee Volunteers football, and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge 679 F & AM, the Johnson County Shrine Club and the Jerico Temple. He was instrumental in the operation of the Johnson County Masonic Shoe Program. He was District Deputy Chairman for District 24 of Grand Lodge F & AM of Tennessee.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years Jean Lunceford Campbell, his daughter Beverly Potter of La Plata, MD. His son Buzz Campbell of Butler. His sister Maxine Carter of Atlanta, GA. His four grandchildren Elizabeth Miller, Tabitha Potter, Cheyenne Campbell, and William Potter. His two great grandchildren Ryanne Miller and Charleigh Miller. Along with several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Mitchel DeLoach, 66, Elizabethton passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late J.G. & Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. He was a 1966 graduate of Happy Valley High School. Kenneth was retired from Kennametal Inc. Following his retirement he was employed at Chaparral Pontiac-Buick and GMC, Johnson City. Kenneth was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years: Diane Lynn Weese DeLoach, October 2, 2013, a brother: Burlus DeLoach and a niece: Brandy Ann Hicks, a great nephew: Zack Brugh.
Survivors include his Children: Donna DeLoach, Elizabethton, Bryan DeLoach and wife Dawn, Gray and Shanna Roark and fiancé Brad Kirk, Telford. His Grandchildren: Gavin Roark, Gage DeLoach, Lola DeLoach, Harleigh DeLoach and Kendal DeLoach. Two Sisters: Dorothy Cooper and husband Dennis, Athens, Tenn., and Juanita Hicks and husband, David, Johnson City. A Brother: Victor DeLoach & wife Judy, Elizabethton. Mark Potter officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2014 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Megan Harsh and the Praise Choir, Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church and Jennifer Martin, Soloist.

JOHNSON CITY - Juanita DeLoach Hicks, age 68, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at her residence. Juanita was born in Carter County to the late JG DeLoach and Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. In addition to her parents, Juanita was also preceded in death by her daughter, Brandy Ann Hicks; her oldest brother, Burlus J. DeLoach and another brother, Kenneth M. DeLoach.
Juanita retired from Kennametal as a machinist and was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Jonson City.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David M. Hicks, of the home; a sister, Dorothy F. Cooper (Dennis) of Athens, TN; a brother, Victor S. DeLoach (Judy) of Elizabethton, TN; a special adopted son, Charlie Norman (Beth) of Elizabethton; and a lifelong friend, Paula “Polly” Jones Grindstaff. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Juanita DeLoach Hicks will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Hobbie McCreary officiating. It is with great sadness that the family of James “Rebel Jim” Brewer announces his passing on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at his residence at age 57. He was born September 3, 1964 to the late Claude and Hartensia Brewer. He loved hunting and fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife Janie Brewer of the home; one daughter Jo Dawn Furchess; three sons: Charlie Mann, Dalton Brewer and Cody Brewer; two sisters: Leola Watson and Geraldine Gentry; one brother Junior Brewer; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. ERWIN - Jackson Daniel "Danny" Heaton, Jr., 57, Erwin, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Born July 26, 1961 in Elizabethton, he had lived a number of years in Erwin. Danny was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. He served in the United States Air Force. He was formerly employed at Snap on Tool, Elizabethton. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his father Jack Heaton.

Survivors include his Daughter: Lauren (Joe) Arnett, Elizabethton. His Mother: Judy Rowland Heaton. Two Brothers: Scott (Dianne) Heaton and Doug (Nikki) Heaton all of Elizabethton. His fiancée Connie Tipton. Several nieces & nephews. His dog: Precious.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Lowell Shell officiating. Burial will follow the service.
