    … 90, of Mountain City, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. R. Thornhill of Roanoke, Va., Rte. 5, on Saturday, Sept. 8.
    Survivors are a son, Ernest Slemp of Mountain City; seven daughters, Mrs. Laura Vaught of Johnson City, Mrs. W. T. Smith of Preston, W. Va.; Mrs. Elbert Wilson of Portland, Ore., Mrs. J. P. Guills of Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. J. C. Dempsey of Unicoi, Mrs. J. R. Thornhill and Mrs. F. O. Davidson, both of Roanoke, Va.; one brother, I. W. Nave of Mountain City; three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Ward of Neva, Mrs. Susan Barry of New Underwood, S. D., Mrs. Mollie Wagner of Mollola, Ore.; 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Valleyview Methodist Church with Rev. William Martin and H. T. Mabry officiating. Pallbearers were the grandsons and flower bearers were the granddaughters.
    The body was returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Slemp Saturday morning.
    Burial was in the family cemetery.

    Ethel was a wonderful, kind, generous, and caring lady who made everyone feel most important. She adored her family, especially her grandchildren and her church family. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and loved her pets.

    She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

    Ethel is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Eller and husband Danny; sisters: Mary Cornett and Nell May; grandchildren: Kevin Mullis and Chequita Meade Gorman and husband Peter; great grandchildren: Johnathan and wife Jessica, Angel, Jessica and Christian; great-great grandchildren: Gabe, Tyler, Javon, Collin and Chloe; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Steven Spencer, Chuck Morefield and Shannon Courtner officiating. Special music will be provided by the Calvary Baptist Church Choir. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Slemp Cemetery.     Mary Lynn enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and working puzzles. She enjoyed a lifetime of fishing. Mary Lynn was also very proud of her grapevine. She was a member of Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church.

    Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Millie Arnold and husband Willie, Judy Ellison and husband Jerry; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Arnold and wife Cheryll, Kristy Livermore and husband Eugene, Wesley Arnold and wife Sybil, and J.R.     The family of Elizabeth Priscilla Slemp Gentry are saddened to announce the passing of their beloved Mother on December 18, 2021, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was 97 years of age at the time of her passing. Elizabeth was a daughter, Mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, friend, farmer, and homemaker. She was born at home in the Neva community of Johnson County, Tennessee, on December 30, 1923, to Charles Franklin “Charlie” and Nettie Florence Arney Slemp. Elizabeth attended Brownlow Elementary School and Johnson County High School from which she graduated in 1941. She furthered her education by attending Business School in Elizabethton, Tennessee. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, reading her Bible, spending time with family and being an active member of the Johnson County Senior center. She was a member Pleasant View Christian Church and also attended God’s Country Church.
    Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, her five siblings Elsie Slemp Mercer and husband, Paul, of Winsor, Virginia; Vennie Slemp Wilson and husband Robert of Mountain City, Tennessee; Clydie Slemp Bear and husband Marion, of Champaign, Illinois; Orville Slemp and wife Lola of Mountain City, Tennessee; McDonald Slemp and wife Ruby of Mountain City, Tennessee, her two husbands, Carl Smith Courtner and Richard Dale Gentry, and one grandson, Mark Blaine Courtner of Mountain City, Tennessee.
    Those left to treasure memories of Elizabeth are her four sons Lynn Courtner and wife Carlene of Mountain City, Tennessee; C. Steve Courtner of Johnson City, Tennessee; Randy Gentry and wife Susanne of Johnson City, Tennessee; and Curtis Gentry and wife Melinda of Elizabethton, Tennessee, her nine grandchildren, Rick Courtner, Jackie Courtner, Tammy Courtner Rohm and husband Lonnie, and Will Courtner all of Mountain City, Tennessee; Ryan Gentry and wife Haley, Kayla Gentry Strange and husband Tanner and Austin Gentry all of Knoxville, Tennessee; Megan Gentry Lewis and husband Brett of Woburn, Massachusetts; Alec Gentry and wife Sophie of Johnson City, Tennessee, her 8 great-grandchildren, Shane Hightower, Amanda Tester, Tommy Ward, Mark Ward, Hannah Courtner, Emersyn Strange, Ellery Strange, and Cadence Lewis, great great-granddaughter Emma Tester, and Thaddeus Kelly, whom she considered one of her sons, her many nieces and nephews and friends.
    Family will receive friends, Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021 from 11am-12:30pm at Hux-Lipford funeral home, Mountain City Tennessee. Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. with the Reverend Randy Johnson and Reverend Mark Potter officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. She was born on June 12, 1927 to the late Edward and Margaret 'Maggie' Arnold Nave. In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by two sisters, Adlee Lane and Ella Mae Goodwin; and two brothers, Earl Nave and Shelton Nave.

    Judy loved to read and loved to go sight-seeing and travel. She was a member of Liberty Christian Church.

    Judy is survived by her husband of 67 years, Alex Snyder; daughter, Kathy Greever of Mountain City, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Helen Snyder of Mountain City, TN; sister, Louise Russom of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren, Amanda Greever of Louisville, TN, Chad Greever and wife Amber, Tracy Snyder and wife Wendy, Rebekkah Davenport and husband Charles, all of Mountain City, TN; great grandchildren, Trey Snyder and Emily Snyder and several nieces and nephews.

    The family received friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Steven Spencer officiating. Music was under the direction of Sherry Tester.

    Graveside service and interment followed at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chad Greever, Tracy Snyder, Chuck Davenport, John Verplank, Larry Snyder, Bill Worley. Honorary Pallbearers were Jack Elswick and Jim Hutchinson.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Oliver S. & Winnie Wilson Slemp. He was a 1954 graduate of Happy Valley High School and attended Steed College. Hasferd served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. In earlier years he was a truck driver and was employed in the Carpenter Shop at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Until his retirement, he was Manager at the Watauga Baptist Lodge, Ridgecrest, North Carolina. Hasferd was a 50 year member of Watauga Masonic Lodge #622 and was a member of Jericho Shrine Temple, Kingsport. He was a member and former Chairman of the Deacon Board at Oak Street Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Hugh Slemp.

    Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Emma Jean Fair Slemp. A Daughter: Valencia Greenwell, Elizabethton. A Son: Greg Slemp, Elizabethton. Two Grandchildren: Neil Greenwell & wife Wendy, and Shana Brower. Two Great Grandchildren: Donavon and Maysan Brower. A sister: Marty Tuelle, Elizabethton. Four Brothers: John L. Slemp & wife Betty, Jimmy Slemp & wife Ann, Jerry Slemp & wife Janice and Johnny Trivette. Several nieces & nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chris Shumate and Rev. Bob Polk officiating.     A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Oliver S. & Winnie Wilson Slemp. Jim was a 1959 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was retired from the Southern Railway Company after 25 years of service in the Richmond, Virginia Division. After retirement Jim & Ann returned to Elizabethton from Burkeville, Virginia where they lived for 20 years. He was a member of the Burkeville Fire Department for 17 years upon departure was awarded an Honorary Membership. He was also a member of the Town Council of Burkeville. After returning to Elizabethton he was employed as an Assistant Superintendent with the Carter County Highway Department. Jim loved his church, Oak Street Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and hunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Hasferd Slemp and his brothers & sisters-In-law: Lena Rowe, Joan Faulkner, Sue Hill, Homer Hyder and Richard Hyder.

    Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Ann Hyder Slemp. His Children: Francie (Scott) Elrod, Johnson City, James Oliver Slemp, Jr.(Anita), Mercersburg, Pa. and Scotty Slemp, Elizabethton.     Mrs. Leonard was a native of Johnson County. She was the daughter of the late Ross M. Minks and Ida Heck Minks. In addition to her parents, her husband, Linkes J. Leonard; one brother, James E. Minks; also preceded her in death.

    Mrs. Leonard was a homemaker. She was of the Christian faith.

    Survivors include two sisters, Nina Lee Green and Ella M. Minks; several nieces and nephews.

    The funeral service for Mrs. Edna Minks Leonard will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, April 5, 2013, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Pastor Lon Tobin will officiate.

    Mimi was born January 19, 1933 in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late B.C. and Donnie Stout. She truly loved her family, and especially her great grandchildren. She always loved doing things for others and never wanted anything in return for herself; she enjoyed cooking and was an avid reader.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose Cornett, and one sister, Mary Lee Vaughn.
    She is survived by two children, Kathryn Cornett-Ulrich (Harry) and Sandra Corbetto-Cornett (Eduardo); four grandchildren, Matthew and Daniel Bower, Giovanni Corbetto and Chiara Cates (Corbetto); in addition, she is survived by five great grandchildren, Jackson, Kairi, Sebastian, Nicolas and Micaela. She is also survived by beloved brothers Fred, Jack, and B.C. Stout and their children.

    A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 3:00PM at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

    Dean was born on February 7, 1935, in Johnson County, Tennessee, to the late D.L. Snyder and Virginia Stout Coffey. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Dale Stout.
    Dean was a member of Vaught's Gap Baptist Church and regularly attended the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church also. Dean enjoyed working with his backhoe and farming, especially working with his cattle.
    Dean was a current Johnson County Commissioner, a former Circuit Court clerk for eight years and a United States Marine Corps Veteran.
    He was a former member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679 F&AM in Butler, Tennessee, and a 32nd Degree Mason.
    Survivors include: son, Michael L. and wife, Vicki A. Stout, of Mountain City, Tennessee; two sisters, Nancy Jacobs and husband, Alton, Mountain City, Tennessee, and Linda Arnold and husband, Terry, of Elizabethton, Tennessee; one brother, Tommy Coffey and wife, Linda, of Mountain City, Tennessee; grandchildren, Carli Stanley and husband, Justin, Hampton, Tennessee, and Calli Rae Smith, Mountain City, Tennessee. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    Funeral services for Dean will be conducted on Saturday, November 9, 2013, from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Norman and Rev. Chuck Morefield to officiate. Music will be under the direction of Joe Simcox.
    The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service hour. Pallbearers will be Roby Dunn, Dwayne Arney, Bill Shepperd, Jerry Stanley, Scott Matheson, Joe Stanley, Jerry Grindstaff and Alton Jacobs.     Billy Gene "Buddy" Slemp, Sr., of Lexington, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1939 to the late McDonald Slemp and Ruby Perkins Slemp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Cole Slemp, and a sister, Linda Rupard.

    Buddy was a sweet and loving man. He retired as a truck driver after driving for 47 years.

    She was born in Neva, TN to the late Kermit Arney and Una Dugger Arney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Wayne Arney; brothers-in-law, Steve Robbins and Jerry Dugger.

    Mary was a member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church. She loved her family, church family and community and was always willing to help others. Her passion was being outside working in her garden. She was a wonderful cook and loved cooking for her family and neighbors. Mary was a graduate of ETSU where she graduated with a degree in education. She loved children and taught Kindergarten for 15 years.

    Mary was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and will be truly missed.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 59 ½ years, Nelson Jeter; sons, Nelson Jeter Jr., and Nathan Jeter and wife Robin; grandchildren, Kathryn Jeter and Joshua Jeter; sister, Martha Dugger (and the late Jerry), Belle Cable and husband Ellis and Ruth Robbins (and the late Steve); brother, Glenn Arney and wife Elena; sister-in-law, Ida Lee Arney (and the late Wayne); several nieces and nephews and her church family.

    Patricia Faye Maupin was born on April 13, 1947. She was a resident of Washington County, Tennessee her entire life. She worked at East Tennessee State University for twenty-nine years in the administration office. She loved fellowshipping at her church, serving others and was a powerful prayer warrior. Patricia “Pat” will always be remembered for her love of God, love of her son, and how she loved all around her, with unconditional love.

    Receiving of friends will be at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home, 418 W College Street in Jonesborough, on Monday, January 16, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral Service will be at 7:00 PM, in the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Barry Burns and Pastor Emory Thornburg officiating.
