    Our community with 33 stars on its Service flag suffered its first casualty today when Mrs. David Greer received a telegram from the War department announcing her son, Sgt. Avery Greer was killed July 19 in France.
    He is survived by his father and mother, three brothers in service and one brother, two sisters and three half sisters here.

    Among the 121 Tennessee World War II dead returned to the U.S. by the army transport Lawrence Victory, all of whom had been originally interred in temporary military cemeteries at Epinal, Sainte Mere Eglise, La Cambe and Saint Juan, France, announced by the Memphis American Graves Registration division, the body of T/Sgt.     AVERY M. GREER
    T/Sgt. Avery M. Greer, who was killed in France July 18, 1944, arrived May 28 in Bristol, the body taken to his home for reburial at Doeville.
    Sgt. Greer was born Oct. 11, 1919, and in 1937 he joined the army at the age of 18. He was stationed at Ft. Meyers, Va., Ft. Bragg, N. C., and Camp Atterbury, Ind., before sailing for England in March, 1944.
    The funeral was held at the Bethel Baptist Church at Doeville, where he was a member, at 2:30 p.m. Mary 29, with Rev. Quinton officiating. Full military honors were given by the VFW, which also acted as pallbearers. Burial was in the family cemetery.
    Survivors are: the parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Greer, six sisters, Mrs. Leroy Berry and Mrs. Ralph Booth of Johnson City, Mrs. Alice Baumgardner of Trade, Mrs. Wiley Greer, Mrs. Beulah Greer, and Dorothy Greer of Doeville; four brothers, S/Sgt. Dolphus Greer of Ft. Dix, N. J., David Greer of Valsetz, Ore., Blaine and Junior Greer of Doeville.

    Blaine Greer, 83, 281 Timothy Branch Road, Butler, Tennessee, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a native of Johnson County, Tennessee, born April 18, 1921 to the late David Marshall Greer and Bertha Rambo Greer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Courtner-Greer, who passed away May 2002, three brothers and five sisters. He retired from Summers-Taylor Construction and was also a retired farmer. He had attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the United States Army.
    Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Greer, Norfolk, Virginia and Beulah Carr, Elizabethton, Tennessee; one brother, Dolphus Greer, Orlando, Florida; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mae Robinson, Butler, Tennessee.
    Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Stout and Daniel Thomas officiating.
    Military graveside services and burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park and was accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.
    Active pallbearers were Dean Jones, Harless Cox, Ronnie Greer, Tracey Greer, Jerry Courtner and Jack Courtner.
    Honorary pallbearers were Mark McEwen and Daniel McEwen.

    ELIZABETHTON – Beulah Proffitt Carr, 91, Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2016, in the Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center after an extended illness.

    A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late David & Bertha Rambo Greer. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. She was a homemaker. Beulah was a member of the Elizabethton Church of Christ.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Bruce Proffitt; her second husband, Geroge Carr; and son, Jackie Bruce Proffitt.

    Survivors include her daughters, Beverly Jean Lowe, Mountain City, Judy Brockwell and husband Donald, and Nancy Matherly and husband Harold, all of Elizabethton; one son, Jerry Proffitt, Elizabethton; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Greer, Norfolk, VA; her sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Greer and Selma Morgan; one brother-in-law, A.B. Carr; several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Roby Ellis, Mr. Eddy Craft, and Brian Smith officiating. Graveside service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, in Butler Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Doug Hinshaw officiating. Music will be provided by Jay Palmer, Steve Roberts, and the Congregation.

    Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, will be: Robbie Baird, Jonathan Lowe, Chris Reece, Derek Brown, Matthew Proffitt, Justin Davis, Harold Matherly, Robbie Davis, and Donald Brockwell. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family.

    WATAUGA - Herbert Morris Greer, 88, Watauga, Tennessee passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 22, 2023 at his residence. He was a native of Butler, Tennessee and was a son of the late Wiley and Elva Triplet Greer. Herbert was a member of the Roan Street Church of God in Elizabethton. He had worked for Interstate Foundry and retired from O.G. Kelly Machine Company. Herbert was a veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed gardening, singing and playing music, fishing, reading, travelling with his wife, Ann, and spending time with his daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved the Lord with all his heart.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Greer; his brothers, Glenn, Orvil, Tom, Butler, Richard Truett and Harry Greer; his sisters, Mary Greer, Gladys Blackburn, Irene Greer and Trula Mae Greer.

    Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Ann Brummitt Greer; his daughter, Sheila Lyons and her husband, Mark of Johnson City; grandchildren, Jennica Norman and husband, Andrew and Josh Smalling and wife, Hillary; great-grandchildren, Emma and Laurel Smalling, Judah, Elias, Greer and Maren Norman; aunt Dorothy Greer and also several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services for Herbert will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Roan Street Church of God, 113 N. Roan Street, Elizabethton, TN with Pastor Ken Bewley and Pastor Jody Bewley officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, May 25, 2023 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Smalling, Mark Lyons, Andrew Norman, Brandon Kent, Keith Greer, Tony Sandridge, and Eddie Manning. Honorary Pallbearers are Larry Kennedy, Jim Ellis, and Charles Bradley.

    Mr. Greer was born in Johnson County and the son of the late Wiley Columbus & Elva Triplett Greer. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mavis Sue Greer and a nephew, Terry Palmer.

    He was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church.

    Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Penny & Toney Strickland, Greeneville; son and daughter-in-law, Keith & Jenny Greer, Johnson City; one brother and sister-in-law, Herb & Ann Greer, Watauga; niece, Sherry Souder, Jonesborough; grandsons, Cody Shell, LeeRoy Greer, Cooper Greer and Mason Strickland; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

    Funeral services will be conducted 7:30 pm Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Tommy Clark officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:00-7:30 pm Tuesday prior to the service.

    Interment services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at Cherry Grove Cemetery.

    Pallbearers will be Cody Shell, LeeRoy Greer, Cooper Greer, Toney Strickland, Mason Strickland, Nathan Coggins, Dewayne Greer and Craig Switzer. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Switzer, David Keplinger and Bill Murr.
