Funeral Services Wednesday For Descendant Local Pioneer Family
MRS. MOLLIE HYDER
Mrs. Mollie Hyder, 78, died at her home early Tuesday morning after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Hyder was the widow of the late W. H. Hyder; she was the daughter of Dave Gourley, one of the pioneer settlers of Carter county.
She was a member of the Christian church.
Mr. Hyder is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charlie Collins and Mrs. Roy Hyder of Oak Grove; three sons, Bob Hyder of Gap Creek, Tip Hyder of Johnson City, and Charlie Hyder of Detroit, Mich.; fifteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Gap Creek Christian church at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. John Shepherd, A. V. Isenberg, John Hall and John Meredith will officiate.
The body will be removed from the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home to the home of Boy Hyder on Gap Creek this afternoon at four o'clock.

MRS. HYDER DIES FROM SEVERAL WEEKS' ILLNESS
Mrs. Florence Treadway Hyder, aged 61, died this morning at six o'clock after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Hyder was the widow of the late Robert L. Hyder and a member of a prominent family of [illegible] Creek section of this county and was a member of the Gap Creek Christian church.

Robert L. Hyder, 60 year old resident of Gap Creek, died at his home on Tuesday morning after an illness of several months. Mr. Hyder was a native of Carter county and a member of the Christian church.

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Ross Taylor Williams, 87, 35 Meeks Road, Ridgecrest, N.C., died Friday, July 14, 2000.

Mr. Williams was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and a former member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tenn., where he served as deacon for many years. He retired from Tennessee Eastman in 1975 after 37 years, and was a World War II Veteran and served in the 70th Coast Artillery, U.S. Army, in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Bernice Williams, January 18, 2000; three brothers, Joe, Frank and Harry; and a sister, Nora Alice McAnnis.

Survivors include his son, Dallas P. Williams, daughter-in-law, Debbie Williams, and granddaughter, Nichole Gibbs, all of Asheville; granddaughter, Erin Gaudette and her husband, Greg, and great-grandson, Gage Taylor Gaudette, all of Springfield, Mass.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Wanda Taylor, Elizabethton, Tenn., James R. and Peggy Taylor, Salisbury, and Virginia and Nat Sams, Johnson City, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

was a retired employee of East Tennessee Undergarment Company.

JOHNSON CITY - Joy Lee Sechrest Allen, 90, of Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on June 8, 2023, following a beautiful life.

She was born in Johnson City to Paul and Alma Lee (Rowe) Sechrest. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University and taught high school English, speech, and drama in Baltimore, MD and Kingsport, TN prior to her marriage to Dr. Charles E. Allen in 1956.

Joy was a gifted actress and singer, and one of the funniest people ever to set foot on a stage. Her acting and directing prowess were evident in many fine productions at the Johnson City Community Theatre and at First Christian Church, where she was a longtime, faithful member. She belonged to the Johnson City Music Club, the Washington County Medical Auxiliary, and the Shady Oaks Garden Club, and her beautiful flower arrangements often took first place at adjudicated flower shows. She loved to entertain and was a superb cook and warm and welcoming hostess. For many years she blessed numerous women through her classes in make-up and fashion and her clothing store, Joy Allen Classics.

But undoubtedly Joy’s starring role was as wife and mother. She and Ed were shining examples of loving Christian marriage and parenting. Joy managed a hectic schedule with aplomb. She took enthusiastic interest in the myriad school, extracurricular, and church activities of four children. She always had time to listen, and her counsel was wise and to-the-point. By example she taught life lessons in being grateful, generous, kind, and unselfish. There was a delicious home-cooked supper on the table every night. She made every holiday festive and joyous. “Gahghi” and her three grandchildren mutually adored each other, and she delighted in planning exciting activities and treats for them. She never lost her playfulness or her curiosity about learning new things. She always took time to let Ed know how special he was to her and how very much she loved him. Her faith in God was quiet and deep, and she loved and served him with her whole heart.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents and by the love of her life, Ed, her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her children Jill Allen Lagerberg, Charles Allen Jr. and his wife Barbara, John Allen and his wife Lesley, and Jennifer Allen; by her grandchildren Charles (Chip) Allen III, Wes Allen, and Carin Gunter and her husband Evan; and by her sister Gail Thompson.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the four wonderful caregivers who loved Joy as if she were their own mother and whose tender care made her last years peaceful and happy: Rita Snodgrass, Teresa Davis, Shirley Dover, and Jennifer Tipton; and to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate service.

Family and friends will gather at Monte Vista Memorial Park, 1900 E. Oakland Avenue, on Sunday, June 11 at 2:00 PM for the graveside committal service.

ELIZABETHTON - Kay M. Edens, 76, of Elizabethton, TN passed away on July 12 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Edens was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Elbert and Blanche Hyder Meredith and Lucille Meredith who graciously stepped in to help raise Kay after her mother died. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold D. Edens and a brother and sister-in-law Willie G. and Patsy Meredith.

Mrs. Edens is survived by a son, Mark Edens (Anna), a daughter, Beth Tester (Larry), and the greatest joy of her life- her granddaughter, Eden Tester. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Jean White and Nancy Alsup, a special niece, Carolyn Dawson, and a special nephew who called weekly, John Meredith. She also leaves behind special friends Gilda Reed, Judy Scalf, Pam Slayton, and Georgia Jaynes.

Mrs. Edens was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Christian Church and the Maggie Kyte Ladies’ Circle.

Kay was a 1964 graduate of Happy Valley High School and a 1966 graduate of Steed College. She retired from the VA Medical Center as a Medical Record Technician.

Kay was also a homemaker who enjoyed traveling, camping, cooking, shopping, canning, and freezing. She also enjoyed college football and basketball; especially the TN Vols teams. She also enjoyed being outdoors, nature, and the beauty of God’s creation.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Burleson, Jeff Chambers, Billy Jaynes, Chris Hughes, Luther McKeehan, Larry Tester.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kirk Hayes, Teddy Reed, Brad Jaynes, Phil Coleman, Tommy Little, Jeff Holt, John Meredith, Terry Meredith, David Meredith, Dylan Garrett, Bryce Garrett, David Slonaker, the men of Oak Grove Christian Church, and the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for their loving care and also to the staff of Amedysis Hospice.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Jeff Curtis Minister and chaplain Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

JOHNSON CITY - Phyllis Ann Gourley Eorgan, 85, of Johnson City, passed away from this life on Sunday, February 5th, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was adored by everyone that knew her. Phyllis was a native of Limestone, TN, and the daughter of Flora Mae and Samuel Alfred Gourley. She was a devout follower of Jesus Christ and a member of First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Linda Jaynes, and brothers, John Gourley and Samuel Gourley.

Phyllis graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Knoxville and began what would become an illustrious career as a nationally recognized critical care nurse and educator. She was a pioneer in developing and implementing critical care education in northeast Tennessee. She brought recognition to Mountain States Health Alliance (now Ballad Health) and the state of Tennessee through her research on cough CPR and the perfection of this technique for patients to self-administer when experiencing life-threatening dysrhythmias. During her career, she also developed and implemented the first critical care course for nurses in northeast Tennessee, teaching critical judgment skills which are essential in the care of intensive care patients.

Her work was published in the industry journal Critical Care Nurse. She was invited to present at the Mayo Clinic National Nursing Conference while carrying out her usual work assignments as a critical care educator for MSHA. She was also instrumental in organizing a critical care course called "Beyond the Basics," an annual education event for nurses.

Phyllis was the model of professionalism and dedication to the practice of nursing, promoting harmony and sharing of knowledge. She was an inspiration to her students, coworkers, and family, always encouraging those around her to be the best they could be. Many of the nurses she educated and inspired continue to carry on her legacy of excellence and her enthusiastic desire for learning.

She was a Registered Nurse (RN) and a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), Northeast Tennessee Chapter of AACN, and Tennessee and American Nurses Associations. She received several awards during her nursing career including the Nurse of Distinction Award in 2001 from the Tennessee Hospital Association. She retired from Mountain States Health Alliance in 2006 and enjoyed living life with her family and friends.

Phyllis leaves a large and tight-knit family to cherish her memory, including her husband, Tom Eorgan; children, Cyndi Bailey and husband Joe; Alisa Bailey and husband Keith; Sha Reid; Dawn Yoder and husband Joe; Thomas Eorgan and wife Cortny; and Chris Huggler and wife Paige. She was blessed with an abundance of grandchildren who loved her dearly: Nicole and Elizabeth Bailey; Alexandra Payne and husband Michael; Kelsey Bailey; Hailey Reid; Taylor and Austin Yoder; Sunny Roan Eorgan; and Gabby and Gracie Huggler. Most recently, she welcomed a great-granddaughter, Andrea Payne.

A celebration of a life well lived will be held on Sunday, February 12th at 2pm at First United Methodist Church, 900 Spring Street, Johnson City, with Rev. Jodie Ihfe officiating. An informal receiving of friends will immediately follow in the church parlor.

The family wishes to thank the nurses, physicians and staff at Johnson City Medical Center, many of whom she taught, for their compassionate care of Phyllis in her final days.

LIMESTONE - Sarah Tarlton, Limestone, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at her residence.

Mrs. Tarlton was born in Johnson City, daughter of the late E.R. and Pauline Gourley.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Sammy Tarlton; daughters Mary Tarlton and Elizabeth Tarlton; son SamSam Tarlton; grandsons Ethan Tarlton and Bentley Tarlton and many loving friends and family.

A funeral service for Mrs. Tarlton will be conducted 3:00 PM, Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2:00 -3:00 PM prior to the service. Graveside service will follow at Providence Cemetery.

Sandra Ann Treadway Kyte, 80, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center. Sandra was born in Carter County to the late Lawrence E. Treadway and Lavinia Sheffield Treadway. In addition to her parents, Sandra was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Lloyd Kyte.
Sandra had worked for Inland Container as a payroll clerk and enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.
Those left to remember Sandra include her brother, Turby Treadway of Sevierville, Tenn.; her sister-in-law, Brenda Lynn and husband Curtis; her godchildren, Daniel Onks and Ivy Painter; and her cousins, Judy Fleenor, Terri Knapp, Robin Kinley and Dwight Treadway.
The committal and inurnment service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

JONESBOROUGH - Robin Treadway Thomas Kinley, age 58, passed away following a brief illness, Wednesday, August 3, 2022.Robin was a resident of Jonesborough, Tennessee,

born to Haskel Dwight and Maxine Hyder Treadway in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

Robin is survived by sisters Judith Fleenor, and Terri Knapp and brother Dwight Treadway (Cindy Morrison Treadway), nieces Elecia Hodge Lonon (Scott), Jasmine Treadway (Brooks Price), nephews, William Lynne Hodge (Karen), Nathaniel Treadway (Carrie), Zach Treadway (Kendall), great nieces and nephews, Sarah Lonon, Ben Hodge, Jaxon and Maddux Price, Molly and Raylen Treadway. Extended family: Thiel McCracken, Greg McCracken, Alan McCracken and Turby Treadway, and special friends Marie and Steven May, Phyllis Hughes and those with whom she worked, and numerous Fur babies.

Robin was preceded in death by her parents, Dwight and Maxine Treadway, and her husband, Chuck Kinley.

Our beautiful Robin was first and foremost a lover of all that she came into contact with. She was an astute business woman, and a hard worker. Robin lived her life with her hands and heart wide open, willing to give her heart and home to any and all, without measure. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her contagious laughter and her love of God, life and those in her circle. She enjoyed herself in everything she did, always creating joy for others. Robin was blessed with the gift of touching others; she gave even in death as she was an organ donor, always thinking of ways to help improve quality of life for others and creating beauty wherever she went. Robin was a picture of grace, class and beauty.

A memorial service to celebrate Robin's life will be conducted on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Pastor Andy Blackwelder officiating. Music will be under the direction of Michael Paul Mould.

Susan Jane Kyte Lowe, 63, a loving mother, sister and aunt of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Beulah "Meme" Robinson Kyte.
Jane was a homemaker who was the neighborhood Mom to kids. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Elizabethton. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and her animals and she loved Christmas time.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Puanana Elliott; a step-son, Monty Lowe; and a niece, Victoria "Tora" Orren.
Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Noah Lowe, and his fiancée and Jane's caregiver, Amanda Wilson, both of Elizabethton; her husband and loving friend, C. Raymond Lowe, Elizabethton; three step-children, Ricky Lowe and wife Tracey, Joey Lowe and wife Lisa and Sonja Holtsclaw and husband Rick, all of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Kelsey Cullop and Christian Lowe, and several step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosalonia Edwards, Elizabethton, and Sharon Fritts of Missouri. Several nieces and nephews, including three special nieces, Tina Garrison, Rosa Colbaugh and Joann Handy, all of Elizabethton, and several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Susan Jane Kyte Lowe will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, December 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone will meet at Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services at 2:15 p.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the residence at any time. It was Jane's wish that those who choose to send flowers, send only one rose.
