    MRS. W. B. PLEASANT
    Mrs. W. B. Pleasant, 39, who died yesterday at her home here after a two month's illness, were conducted this afternoon at 1:30 from the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. R. A. Cox officiating. Interment was in the Rambo Cemetery at Doeville in Johnson County.
    Mrs. Pleasant was born March 11, 1897, at Doe Valley to J. L. and Sadie Church. On Sept. 19, 1914, she was married to Walter B. Pleasant. Five years ago they moved to Elizabethton, residing at 362 Doe Avenue.
    Survivors are the husband, one daughter, Ruby; four sons, J. L. Pleasant, of the Hawaiian Islands; Walter B. Jr., Howard and an infant son, Sidney, two months old; five sisters, Mrs. L. M. Cress of Neva, Mrs. J. D. Ward of Butler, Mrs. W. J. Williams, Clinch, Va., Mrs. George H. Peters of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Wheeler Grindstaff of Butler.
    Active pallbearers were F. Hodge, Hugh Mottern, Ivan Miller, Arthur Parson, Walter Hopkins, John Bellamy, Wheeler Oaks, and John Nelson.

    ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Laura Church Peters, 94, 100 East K Street, Elizabethton, TN, died Thursday, February 3, 2005, in the Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness. A native of Johnson County, TN, she had resided in Carter County since 1929 and was the daughter of the late Jack L. and Sally Deloach Church. She was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, a former sales representative for Happy Valley Memorial Park and former Cafeteria Manager of Elizabethton High School. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Peters, June 1978; five sisters, Sanna Pleasant, Thelma Cress, Grace Grindstaff, Eula Williams and Georgia Ward. Survivors include five daughters and three sons-in-law, Pat and Reuben Payne, Knoxville, TN, Sue and Harry Farthing, Elizabethton, TN, Kathy and Lawrence Nunamaker, Columbus, OH, Dottie Peters, Chattanooga, TN, and Janet Denny, Elizabethton, TN; nine grandchildren, Laura Payne, Susan Henson, Harry Farthing, April Holsclaw, Mark Jensen, Rachel Jensen, Christie Nunamaker, Lori West and Shanna Denny. Nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service for Mrs. Laura Church Peters will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 5, 2005, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Brent Seals officiating. Interment will follow the service in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be sons-in-law, grandsons and nephews. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-2:00 P.M. on Saturday prior to the service or at the homes of Sue and Harry Farthing or Janet Denny, at any time.

    Sidney E. Pleasant Sr., 76, of Cocoa, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida.

    Mr. Pleasant was born in Carter County, TN, but had lived in Florida since October of 1960. He was the son of the late Walter B. Pleasant Sr. and Sana Church Pleasant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter B. Pleasant Jr., William H. Pleasant and Jack L. Pleasant; and one sister, Ruby Pleasant Moore.

    Mr. Pleasant was a retired police sergeant and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church in Cocoa, FL.

    Survivors include his wife, Velma L. Sheffield Pleasant, of the home; two sons, Sidney E. Pleasant II, and John Pleasant and wife, Donna,, all of Cocoa, FL; one granddaughter, Sydney E. Pleasant, Cocoa, FL; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Sheffield and wife, Cathy, Morristown, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The committal and entombment service for Mr. Pleasant will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

    Friends may visit the family at the residence of Charles "Dude" LaPorte at anytime.

    Sgt. Major Jack Church Cress (Retired), age 82, passed away on Saturday December 20, 2014, at Hillview Health Care Center, Elizabethton, TN, with his family by his side.
    Jack was born October 29, 1932, the son of the late L.N. (Bud) and Thelma Church Cress of Neva, TN. He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence and Robert Cress; and a great-grandson, Shawn Wills.
    Jack was retired from the United States Army after serving 21 years of service. He was very proud to be a solider and served his country with pride. Sergeant Major Cress served in the Korean and Vietnam War and also served in Desert Storm. He was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., Okinawa and Sendai, Japan, Hawaii, Germany, Presidio, San Francisco California, Fort McPherson, Ga., Fort Campbell and Fort Knox KY, and Fort Smith Arkansas. Jack was one of 18 soldiers that were sent from California to the 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, KY, to set up the first Data Processing Center Army wide.
    Jack worked for Smith-Higgins Company in Johnson City as a Data-Processing manager for 10 years after retiring from the Army. He served Johnson County as purchasing agent for 5 years. The past 30 years Jack was self-employed as a tax preparer and book keeper.
    Jack was a member of Vaught's Gap Baptist Church for 42 years, where he held the office of Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
    Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte Mink Cress, who lovingly cared for Jack and remained by his side throughout his lengthy illness; daughters: Katherine Lowman (Bob), Richmond, VA, Pamella Johnson (Rex), Elizabethton, TN, and Perriann Stanley (Jerry), Mountain City, TN; one sister, Margaret Cress, Mountain City, TN; four brothers: Joe Mack Cress, Mountain City, TN, John Cress, Morristown, TN, James Cress Midlothian, VA, and Sam Cress of Mountain City, TN; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
    Jack's family would like to thank the staff of Hillview Health Care Center for the excellent care he received. A special thanks to Nurse Penny Bradley who always made him smile.
    The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at Mountain City Funeral Home (Mountain City, TN) with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Brother Noah Broughton from Nancy, Kentucky, to officiate. Bro. Broughton was Jack's pastor in Fort Knox, KY, in 1968 and has remained a longtime friend. Music will be provided by Jack's grandchildren, Nikki Campbell, Monica Hardin, Bridgett Simpson and Garrett Johnson. Active pallbearers will be Jerry Stanley, Rex Johnson, Bob Lowman, Jason Lowman, Jared Lowman, Garrett Johnson and Joe Winebarger. Honorary pallbearers will be Louis Gump, Harold Garland, Fred Mayfield and Tony Fowler.
    A private family committal service with Military Honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard will be held Friday December 26, 2014, at Mountain Home National Cemetery.

He was a retired cabinet maker and architectural wood work. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Morristown; he was ordained as a deacon at Falling Creek Baptist Church in Richmond, Va.; a member of Morristown Lodge 231 F& AM. He was a past master of Chesterfield Lodge 161 in Richmond, VA. He was a member of the Hamblen Chapter 31 Order of the Eastern Star. Past patron of Chesterfield Chapter 139 in Richmond, VA. He was also a 32nd degree Mason. John was a veteran of the US Army with the 1st Armored Division. He is preceded in death by his parents L.N. and Thelma Church Cress; wife Jewel P. Cress; three brothers, Clarence, Robert and Sgt. Major Jack C. Cress all of Mountain City, TN; and a sister-in-law Lois Horne Cress also of Mountain City, TN.

    He is survived by a step-daughter Janice Rach of Short Pump, VA; a sister Margaret Cress, Mountain City, TN; brothers, Joe Cress, Sam (Anne) Cress, of Mountain City, TN, James (Dorothy) Cress of Chesterfield, VA; sister-in-law, Charlotte Cress; one nephew Steven Cress of Charlotte, NC; nieces, Katherine Lowman, Midlothian, VA, Pamella Johnson, Elizabethton, TN, Perriann Stanley, Mountain City, TN and Karen Sullivan of Mechanicsville, VA.

    A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Wheeler G. and Grace Church Grindstaff. He had lived a number of years in Carter County before moving to Johnson City about 20 years ago.

    He was a retired Truck Driver for Inland Container. Mr. Grindstaff was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church, Johnson City.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Steven Grindstaff, June 16, 2011; by two brothers: Lowell Grindstaff and his wife, Pauline, and Howard Grindstaff; and a sister and her husband: Pansy & Ed Greer.

    Survivors include his wife of 63 years: Geraldine Scalf Grindstaff; A Daughter & Son-in-Law: Jackie & Judge Pippin, Knoxville; A Brother: Doug Grindstaff, Johnson City; Four Grandchildren: Stephen Pippin, Seth Pippin and his wife, Mallery, Jordan Dean Grindstaff and John Goodwin; Several nieces & nephews, includeing two special nieces: Ann Fortner and Sandy.

    Graveside Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, in Happy Valley Memorial Park with his son-in-law, Judge Pippin, officiating. Burial will follow the service.

    Friends may also visit at the residence at anytime.

    In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
