JOHNSON CITY - Pauline Georgia Oakes Smith, 86, of Johnson City, died Thursday, August 18, 2016 at her home with beloved son Rob by her side. She was a native of Newland, North Carolina, daughter of the late Harrison and Lilly Greene Oakes (a coal miner's daughter).

Pauline was a retired homemaker who will always be remembered as a loving wife and mother who loved family above everything else.

She was hospitable, offering coffee to everyone who entered her door.

A lovely lady who always put her family's needs before her own.

In addition to her parents, her husband, R. C. Smith; two brothers, Floyd and Dewey Oakes; four sisters, Ruby Jones, Odie McKinney, Arlene Barnett, and Ruth Hoilman; her loving granddaughter, Jessica Shalene Morrow preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, Janith Smith (husband Jesse) of Jonesborough, Robert Dale Smith of the home, Darlene Sue Smith Morrow of Johnson City; Shelia Kay Smith of Johnson City, and Christopher Allen Smith of Jonesborough; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 20, 2016 from 10:00am until 11:00am at the Morris-Baker Funeral Home Oak Chapel. A funeral service will follow under the direction of Minister Greg Gay. Following the service a procession to Roselawn Memorial Park will leave for a committal service. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

She was a daughter of the late Lula Pritchard and James Wesley Moody.

She was a Greeneville, TN, native who had lived in Johnson City for years prior to relocating to Florida.

Mrs. Harshbarger was a former member of Central Baptist Church, Johnson City.

Mrs. Harshbarger was a former proprieter of the South Roan Grill.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harshbarger was preceded in death by: her husband, Ernest Harshbarger; sister, Clara Mottern; and brother, Stewart Moody.

Survivors include: three nieces, Kathy Davitt and her husband, Jack, of Jacksonville, FL, Karen Nilsson and her husband, Harry, of St. Augustine, FL, and Rheba Lowry, of Euclid, OH; five great nieces and nephews, Michael, Steven, Julie, Joseph and Hunter; and numerous cousins.

Services for Birta Lucille Harsbarger will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 1, 2011, from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Rev. R. Willard Warfield will officiate. Born in Heaton, NC, on April 12, 1935, John was the son of the late James Riley and Mildred Shell Pritchard. He was the owner and operator of P&P Trucking and he was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Pritchard was preceded in death by wife: Carol Pickett Pritchard; Son: Robert E. Pritchard; Brother: Charles Pritchard; Sister: Elizabeth Brock.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - Mr. Charles Warren Pritchard, age 80, of Roan Mountain, TN passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at his residence. A native of Avery County, NC he was the son of the late James Riley and Mildred Shell Pritchard. Mr. Pritchard was the owner of a hardwood lumber business. He had worked previously at Bemberg Corporation and had also owned a Trucking Company in Texas. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having entered in Texas and then serving at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA and was sent to Okinawa. He was a member of Heaton First Christian Church and was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post 2166. He enjoyed learning of the local history of our area and loved feeding the deer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Ramer Pritchard and a sister, Elizabeth Brock. BRUNSWICK, GA — Elizabeth Pritchard Brock, a prominent business figure and pioneering woman in Georgia manufacturing circles, died on Saturday, July 2, 2016, from complications due to progressive spranuclear palsy. She was 77.

She was born Elizabeth Ann Pritchard on October 2, 1938, eldest daughter of the union of James Riley and Mildred Anna Pritchard of Heaton, North Carolina. She attended Elizabethton High School in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and was graduated summa cum laude from East Tennessee State University with a degree in business management. In the early 1970s, Elizabeth founded Pallets, Inc. in Gwinnett County, manufacturing specialty hardwood pallets for shipping and warehousing. She operated this business some 40 years, until failing health forced her to retire in 2012.

As a business owner in Gwinnett County, she was active in the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and aided its growth. Elizabeth served on the executive board of directors of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce for more than 30 years, shepherding the organization's growth from the Business Council of Georgia to the influential institution it is today. She was often called to testify before the Georgia General Assembly, representing the state's manufacturers. Her proudest achievement while on the board was founding, along with the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the STAR Student program to recognize the state's brightest high school seniors and their teachers. She was the mistress of ceremonies for the state-wide STAR Student awards banquet for 19 years. She was vice-chair of the Governor's Health Strategies Council until it was adjourned. Later, she served on the board of the Lake Lanier Island Authority.

A lifelong learner, Elizabeth earned her private pilot's license in her 50s, was a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, and served as the state president of the Georgia Pilots Association. She enjoyed volunteering with the USO and faithfully greeted soldiers flying through Atlanta's airport every Thanksgiving. A member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church since moving to Atlanta in 1970, Elizabeth served as lead usher for nearly 20 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Elliott Ballard; seven siblings; and dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Elizabeth Pritchard Brock's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2016, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta.

Cynthia Kay Pritchard, age 73, formerly of Elizabethton, TN went to her heavenly home with her Father on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 in Rowlett, TX.

A native of Banner Elk, NC she was the daughter of the late James Riley Pritchard and Mildred A. Shell Pritchard. Ms. Pritchard never met a stranger, had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and have fun. She had been a barber for twenty-five years and was a member of First Christian Church in Rowlett, TX. Ms. Pritchard loved her family and her dogs. She enjoyed working in her garden, listening to E.H.S. football games on the radio and talking about her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Dean Pritchard and Charles Warren Pritchard; two sisters, Elizabeth Pritchard Brock and Carolyn Lee Pritchard and a special brother-in-law, O.C. Franklin. Two fur babies, Tebow and Milly also preceded her in death. Shirley Faye Long, 84, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 8, 2022, from her residence. Shirley was born in Canebreak, W.Va., to the late George Washington Stout and Lucy Alice Oaks Stout. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Holsclaw; her second husband, Roy Clyde Long; and her brothers and sisters, Myrtle, Hilda, Clyde, Dewey, Carl, Pauline, George, Dorothy, Frankie, Arthur, JoAnn, Sonny and Leland.
Shirley was a homemaker and loved her children dearly; she also loved her church, music and singing. She had actually sang with Southern Harmony. Shirley had a strong work ethic and had held several jobs and in each one, she gave her all. She had worked at furniture manufacturing, Magnavox and in the kitchen at Hampton Elementary School. Shirley was an excellent cook and loved baking cakes and treats.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Jimmy Holsclaw, Danny Holsclaw, Angela Ward, Christopher Holsclaw, Crystal Aleman and Regina Crowder; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Christine and Faye. Mabel Elizabeth Oakes February was born May 1916 in Avery County NC. She passed peacefully under the wonderful care at The Waters of Roan Highlands in Roan Mountain, Tenn., at the age of 102 on Dec. 6, a faithful follower and servant of our Savior Jesus Christ since her baptism at age 8 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mabel and her husband, Charlie, raised her niece, Sandra O. Helton. Survivors include Sandra and husband, Charles Helton, their Children: Charla and daughter, Victoria, and David and wife, Jeanna, and their children: Isaac, Forrest and Zoe. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Burial will be private at Fox Cemetery, alongside her husband, and a memorial will be held later in Summer 2019.

Nicola was a native of Elk Park. She was a housewife and mother most of her life and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. She was the daughter of the late George Turbyfill and Lena Bare Turbyfill.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elzy, daughters Patricia Carr and Beverly Redepenning, brothers Coeburn, Claude, Elmer, JL and CJ Blackwell, sisters Goldie Pierce, Virgina Potter and Opie Osborne, granddaughter Dawn Rietman.

She is survived by sister Edith Duckworth, daughters Wanda Stines and Kim Honeycutt, son in laws James Carr, Robert Cox and Kelly Honeycutt, sister in laws Lola (Rob) Cox, Thelma, Ginny, Joan Blackwell and Betty Jo Choucalas. Grandchildren Kevin (Kim) Gotch, Paula Rietman, Brandy May, David Redepenning, Jena Stines, Grant, Lucas (Holli) Honeycutt. Great Grandchildren Dawn May and Ashton Stines. Several nieces and nephews.

Ruby was a graduate of Cloudland High School and worked for ARA services at Levi's and for the Carter County Court Clerk's office. She was a member of Elizabethton church of Christ. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling with friends and being with her family.

The family wishes to thank her caretakers Jan Stafford and Lee Garland, the physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists at SSH PCU unit for their compassionate care.

Her wish was to be cremated. Visitation services will be at Memorial Funeral Chapel Sunday Feb 12th from 1 to 3 p.m. Service at 3 p.m. with Pastor Roby Ellis officiating.

He was a native of Carter County, a son of the late Henry and Destie Johnson Blackwell. He was also preceded in death by a Daughter, Judy Blackwell; Sisters: Glodie Blackwell Pierce, Virginia Potter & Opie Osborne; Brothers: Coeburn Blackwell, Claude Blackwell, Elmer Blackwell and C.J. Blackwell. John worked as a millwright, his hobby was working on yard equipment. John was a US Air Force veteran, and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Big Springs Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years Thelma Murray Blackwell; three children: Dale Martin & wife Kim, Kingsport, Ed Blackwell and wife Becky, Johnson City, Ted Blackwell of the home. Two Grandchildren: Summer Morton and Brandi Blackwell, one Great Grandchild Kellsie Hicks. Two Sisters: Ruby Blackwell Canaway, Elizabethton and Edith Blackwell Duckworth, Oak Ridge. The service for Mr. Blackwell will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 in the Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Glen Layfield officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Music will be by the Johnson Family. Military Honors will be by the Carter County Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Nephews. The family would like to give a special "Thank You" to Judy Little for her loving care for always being there for the family, Doctors and Staff of the Virginia Hospital. ELIZABETHTON — C.J. Blackwell, age 78, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 25, 2016, from his residence, following a brief illness.

C.J. was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Henry and Destie Johnson Blackwell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Goldie Pierce, Virginia Potter and Opie Osborne; and three brothers, Coburn Jack Blackwell, Claude Blackwell and Elmer Blackwell.

C.J. had been employed as a millwright and was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church of Johnson City. He had a love of music that had endured throughout his life and was an avid Tennessee Vols fan, especially Peyton Manning. He was a "rock hound" and enjoyed playing and singing, and shared his love for music by singing Gospel music in churches and nursing homes.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 16 years, Virginia "Ginny" Whaley Blackwell, of the home; two sisters, Ruby Caraway, of Elizabethton and Edith Duckworth, of Oak Ridge, TN; and a brother, J.L. Blackwell, of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great great nieces and great great nephews, also survive.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas M. & Etta Oakes Irick. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Bowman was a member of the Elk Mills Christian Church.

Norma was a member of the Valley Forge Christian Church where she was a member of the church choir. She loved quilting, sewing and knitting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Steve Dugger, November 2018; two brothers, Jack and B. Irick; and a sister, Vesta Bowman.

Sandra Kay Hughes, 71, Roan Mountain, went home to Heaven on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born February 13, 1950 in Roan Mountain to the late Joseph and Bertha Winters Arnett.
Sandra was a 1969 graduate of Cloudland High School. She was a homemaker and in earlier years she was a beautician. She loved being around her children and grandchildren. She loved working in her yard and gardening.
Sandra was a member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy and James Arnett.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Glenn Hughes; two daughters, Heather Hughes (Brandon) Carpenter and Holli Hughes (Lucas) Honeycutt, all of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Ty Hughes Carpenter, Hooper Hughes Carpenter, Holt Hughes Honeycutt and (upcoming arrival) Hensley Kay Honeycutt; four sisters, Willie Troutman, Kathy Elliott, Jackie Johnson and Pat Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (New Section — 215 Heroes Drive) with Rev. Richard Sheppard officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, will be Brandon Carpenter, Lucas Honeycutt, Brian Elliott, Noah Johnson, Jordan Johnson and Grant Honeycutt.

Clarence A. Winters, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family members on April 21, 2018. He was born May 8, 1927, in Avery County to the late Howard Lindsay Winters and Lula Octava (Oakes) Winters. He was preceded on death by three sons: Clifford Allen, Douglas Arthur, and Marion Alexander, and three brothers, three sisters, and one granddaughter.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 71 years, Melba Jean Barrier Winters of the home; three sons: Marlon Lavon Winters (Rhonda) of Asheboro, Larry D. Winters (Victoria) of Hudson, Keith Eldon Winters of the home, Loree Dawn Stackhouse (Mason) of Panaca, Nev. He is also survived by one brother: Thomas Emmitt Winters of Spruce Pine; and sisters: Carol June Winters Ollis of Morganton, and Delphia Jean Winters of LaFollette, Tenn..

Additional survivors include grandchildren: David Winters (Susan) of Clemson, SC, Jeremy Winters (Andrea) of Statesville, Alicia Robinson (Neil) of Mt. Holly, Lynette Brewer (Aaron) of Mooresville, Paige Stanich of Statesville, Cameron Reed (Shannon) of Lehi, Utah, Krista Patrick (Thomas) of Rogers, Ark., Robert Winters of Millville, Utah, Richard Winters (Savannah) of Eagle Mtn., Utah, Megan Boring (Wade) of Millville, Utah, Michael Winters of Logan, Utah, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather.

At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the United States Navy and served for two and a half years. He retired as a mail carrier of the US Postal Service after 28 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Newton, NC, and an honorary member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

He was a lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in multiple positions of leadership. His passion was genealogy and researching family history, as evidenced by his 18 years of working with the local genealogy library. He has written 18 family history books and helped organize the Genealogy Society of Catawba County, where he served as the co-president and was a co-author of the Catawba County Heritage Book. Clarence loved to talk and share stories of his experiences; stories and sometimes tall tales that were found during his researching of the genealogies of families within this region.

The family will receive family and friends at Jenkins Funeral Home, Startown Road, Newton, NC, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018. The funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Thorneburg Drive, Conover, NC, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Following the service, a private burial service will be held at the family cemetery, the White Pine Cemetery in Newland, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Catawba Regional Hospice.

Roger Odell Oakes, 66, of Roan Mountain, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jack and Cleo Potter Oakes.
Roger was a graduate of Cloudland High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Infantryman Badge: Expert (Rifle). He attended Roan Mountain United Methodist Church. He loved to hunt fish and go camping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lynn Oakes, and a sister, Brenda Banks.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Barbara Hall Oakes; his children, Adam Oakes and Braydin Oakes, both of Roan Mountain, and Devin Oakes, Fort Polk, La.; a granddaughter, Aaliyah Oakes; his sisters, Orah Lee Andrews, Butler, Sandra Henson and Jackie Thomas, both of Roan Mountain; five brothers, Kenneth Oakes, Lenoir, N.C., Larry Oakes, Banner Elk, N.C., Tommy, Terry and Rhudy Oakes, all of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roger Odell Oakes were conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at High Point Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Dennis Millhorn officiating. Graveside services and interment were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, in the Brewer-Oakes Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers were Adam Oakes, Mike Ward, Tommy Oakes, Little Larry Oakes, Jerry Potter, Randy Brinkley, Scott Oakes, Josh Oakes and Jerry Jones. Honorary pallbearers were his many friends at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at High Point Baptist Church. Ella Louise Fields Trice passed away Tuesday evening, September 7, 2021, following a brief illness.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathie Massee; widow of David Massee, and her son, Bill, Charles W. Trice, Jr., (Kathy). She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Charles W. Trice and their son, Rodney Evan Trice (Regina). She is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Like most mountain women, Louise was a wonderful cook and helped raise a big vegetable garden yearly from which she canned and froze the best things her family ate during the winter. Louise also loved flowers and planted dahlias and lilies every spring and always expected hanging baskets for Mothers Day. Her flowers graced every family grave on decoration each summer in White Pine Cemetery and Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Louise also sewed a great many of Kathies clothes as she grew up. Amazingly, while carrying out all that needed doing taking care of her home and three children, Louise worked thirty years at Glen Raven Mills. For years, she got up early enough to cook a full breakfast, including gravy and biscuits, for her husband and children before leaving to arrive at work at 7:00 in the morning.

She and husband Charles spent many happy winters in retirement in their home in St. Augustine with close friends all around them in the little Caroline Road community there. She enjoyed walking the trails there with Charles and their dog, playing on the beach with their children and grandchildren, and reading endlessly. She was a friend of the Morrison Library here and donated new books as soon as she finished them.

Graveside services for Louise Trice will be on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Allen Oaks, 79, of Gate City, Va., passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at his residence.

Allen was born on April 9, 1943 in Avery County, NC, a son of the late Steward General Oaks and the late Nola Calhoun Oaks.

Allen was member of the New Destiny Church in Kingsport, TN. He was the Owner of Oaks Construction for almost 50 years, with locations in Ohio and North Carolina. He enjoyed bowling and singing. He was known for doing Elvis shows.

He was preceded in death by his father, Steward General Oaks; mother, Nola Oaks; sister, Gwinda Maracz.

Allen leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 55 years, Mary Gorman Oaks of the home; son, Allen (Deonna) Oaks of Gate City, Va.; grandson, Dakota Oaks; six granddaughters, Caraline Oaks, Lily Oaks, Emily Kendrick, Georgia Kendrick, Bethany Kendrick, and Madison Kendrick.

Services for Allen Oaks was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rita Pritchard officiating. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour Friday at the funeral home. Interment was in the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Christine B. Fields, 86, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center following an extended illness. Christine was born in Avery County, N.C., to the late Steve and Mabel Palmer Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dock Edward Fields, in 1994, and a daughter, Carmelita Fields Johnson.
Christine was a homemaker, a loving Mother and Grandmother. She was a member of Roan Mountain Church of Christ and enjoyed making crafts and visiting auctions and flea markets.
Those left to cherish her memory include five sons, Freddie Fields and wife Joy, Ed Fields and wife Karen, Rick Fields and wife Melissa, Robert Fields and wife Shelly and Cecil Fields and wife Monica, all of Roan Mountain, and one son-in-law, Jack Johnson, also of Roan Mountain. Brothers, sisters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Mrs. Christine B. Fields will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 17, in the Fields Cemetery in the Buck Mountain Community of Roan Mountain with Mr. Clarence Cannon, minister, officiating. Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the Tetrick Rhododendron Chapel in Roan Mountain at 1:30 p.m. Friday to go in procession. Bertha Ellen Cole, age 74, of Lenoir, NC passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018 at her home in Lenoir, NC.

She was born on April 17, 1944, in Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of David and Etta Hicks Johnson.

Bertha was a devoted mother and grandmother who never met a stranger. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking, but mostly spending time with her grand-babies

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her son: Lonnie Johnson; daughter: Linda Ann Cole; Brothers: Jake Johnson, John Johnson and Jim Johnson; Sisters: Helen Oakes, Sylvia Clawson, Cleo Marlowe and Kay Cole.

ELIZABETHTON - Joann "Pnut" Perkins, 83, 276 Sunrise Drive, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord Monday, September 2, at The Hospice House in Bristol, TN.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Andy J. Nidiffer and Josephine Nave Nidiffer. Joann was a graduate of Unaka High School and attended Steed College in Johnson City. Joann began working in the local banking industry at a young age, holding various positions at Carter County Bank, Citizens Bank, then serving as Executive Vice President at Watauga Valley Bank. After banking she worked in various roles in different industries then retired from Carter County Highway Department, where she assisted in the office when her husband Jack served as Superintendent.

Joann was a faithful and active member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church where she participated as a member of the choir, food committee, and visited those who were sick or unable to attend. She was a Sunday School teacher, Children's Choir Director, and member of the Adult Choir at the church where she grew up. She was also an active member of the Carter County Republican Party where she served as Secretary for multiple years. She was voted Republican of The Year in 2018.

Joann dearly loved her church family. During her illness, attending church is what she missed the most. She was always witty, hopeful, and positive even in her darkest hours. "Tomorrow will be better" she would always consistently say. Tomorrow has come. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her parents Joann was preceded in death by her husband Jack Perkins, brother Wheeler (Jay) Nidiffer, sister Kathryn Collins, Brother Isaac (Link) Nidiffer, and brother-in-law Earl Collins. Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters-in-law Katie Nidiffer and Carolyn Nidiffer both of Elizabethton; niece Katrina Nidiffer of Nashville; nephew Toby (Carol) Nidiffer, great nephew Andrew (Alyssa) Nidiffer, and great niece Kerri Nidiffer all of Marietta, GA; special cousin Jan Showalter, Johnson City. Many cousins, extended family, and special friends also survive.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 4, from 5 to 7 pm at Memorial Funeral Chapel, followed by a celebration of life service with Rev. Mark Fowler and Rev. Bobby Stout officiating and music provided by Greg Ruston, Katrina Nidiffer, and Tawana Holland. Graveside service will be on Thursday, September 5, at 11am at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

David H. Blackwell, age 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

David was born in Carter County to the late Coburn Jack Blackwell and Pauline Blackwell. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Billie Troutman.

David was the owner and operator of Elizabethton Glass Company and was a member of High Point Baptist Church. He was an antique car enthusiast and loved being at work. David loved helping others and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Cole.

ELIZABETHTON - Dicky James Blackwell, 80, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at his residence after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Claude Burns & Lucy Julian Blackwell. Dicky served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was retired as a welder and pipe fitter. In later years he was associated with his wife, Robin, in the operation of the Corner Nest. Dicky was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 for 48 years, the Elizabethton Chapter Order of Eastern Star, The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)and The Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He was a member of the Jericho Oriental Band for 48 years and he was a past President of the SASOBA Oriental Band. He was an avid UT Football fan, loved to cook and work in his garden. He was a member of Roan Street Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Ronnie Blackwell.
Survivors include his wife: Robin Bulla Blackwell. Two Daughters: Regina (Brad) Shepherd and D’Jae Blackwell. A Step-daughter: Lana (Seth) Snyder. A Grandson: Luke Shepherd. Step-Grandchildren: Carson Atkinson, Cooper Snyder and Collin Snyder. Two Sisters; Jeanie Johnson and Barbara McKinney. One Brother: Gary Blackwell.

ELIZABETHTON - Roger Dale Pierce, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center, after a short illness with his family by his side. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Ellis & Goldie Blackwell Pierce. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. Roger served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. Roger worked as a welder and millwright and retired from Daniels Construction at Eastman. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a generous, gifted and loving brother and friend. He was a wonderful husband always aspiring to care for Debbie. Roger was a member of First Christian Church and was a devoted student of the word of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws: Mary and Eugene Bowers.

Survivors include his wife: Debbie Bowers Pierce, His Brothers: Terry (Barbara) Pierce and Bruce (Mary) Pierce. The family would like to thank those at Franklin-Woods and the Johnson City Medical Center for the care Roger received.

ELIZABETHTON - Steve Dugger, age 60, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord from Duke University on Monday, November 26, 2018, following a courageous battle.


Steve was born in Elizabethton to Walter Clyde Dugger and Norma Ruth Irick Dugger, of Elizabethton.

Steve was a loving husband and father and was a very active member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. He retired from the Carter County Highway Department, where he had worked on the paving crew. Steve enjoyed participating in Revolutionary War Re-Enactments with the re-enactment group, Company of Over Mountain Men.

Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his parents, include his wife, Ginger Sparger Dugger, of the home; his son, Nathan Dugger, of Elizabethton; his daughter, Bethany Wachterman and husband Jason, of Waynesville, NC; one brother, Glenn Dugger and wife Greta, of Port Orange, FL; one sister, Sherry Ayers and husband Steve, of Johnson City; his niece, Emily Dugger; and four nephews, Ian Dugger, Austin Ayers, Eli Ayers and Kevin Sparger.

A service to celebrate the life of Steve Dugger will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 30, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Brent Nidiffer, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Herman “Bud” McKinley Oaks Jr passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Herman was born on February 19, 1943, to the late Susie Strickland and Herman McKinley Oaks. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson City, a graduate of Science Hill High School and attended East Tennessee State University.
Bud was an active member of Marvin’s Chapel United Methodist Church
He retired from American Red Cross where he delivered blood to regional hospitals for many years.
Bud enjoyed traveling, he and his wife Beth took many long trips to the western US, visiting our National Parks, as well as Europe. Bud loved to hunt, garden, and cook.
Bud is survived by his wife Beth P Oaks; Daughter: Jennifer Oaks; Sister: Sue Speer (Gary), Johnson City; Stepsons: Craig Thompson (Kenny), Jonesborough, Kent Thompson (Laura), Nashville, Scott Thompson (Renee), Limestone; Nieces: Allison Speer Smith (Rick), Ashley Speer Minter (Barry), Debbie H. Ramsey (Frankie), Jonesborough; Nephew: Michael “Mickey” Hopkins, Johnson City; Step Grandchildren: Ian Thompson (Molly), Atlanta, Emil Thompson (Leia), Limestone, Emily Thompson, Baltimore, Spence Thompson (Kaylyn), Limestone; Great Nephews: Tristan Smith and Logan Smith. Special friend: Peggy Burns, Johnson City.
He was proceeded in death by his sister Delores Ann Odom, and nephew William “Randy” Hopkins Jr.
Funeral services for Herman “Bud” Oaks Jr will be conducted at 7 PM, Friday, December 3, 2021, at Tetrick Funeral Services of Johnson City with Pastor Joel Cook and Pastor Dennis Ford officiating. Friends may come prior to the service from 5 to 7 PM for viewing and to sign the register. Interment at the Monte Vista Memorial Park at 12 Noon Saturday December 4th. The family requests masks be worn.
Pallbearers will be Paul Payne, Rodney Thomas, Scot Hamilton, Logan Smith, Tristan Smith, Ian Thompson, Emil Thompson, Emily Thompson, and Spence Thompson. Honorary pall bearers: Marvin’s Chapel Men’s Club
The family would like to thank the staff at JCMC and Franklin Woods Hospitals for the excellent care Bud received in his last days.

JONESBOROUGH - Ralph Ledford, 77, of Jonesborough, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2023. Ralph was born on September 17, 1945 in Buladean, NC to the late, Robert and Ethel (Campbell) Ledford. Ralph proudly served in the United States Airforce for 27 years, a Veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Storm. He later went on to work as the Assistant Fire Chief for McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base for 17 years before retiring. Ralph enjoyed working on cars in his spare time. He was also a minister of the gospel and loved spreading God’s word, as well as being a very active member of Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. A military honors and graveside committal service will take place at 10 am on Friday, January 27, 2023 at Washington County Memorial Gardens in Johnson City, TN.

Lonnie Dale Johnson, age 45, of Lenoir died July 8, 2013 at his residence. He was born December 30, 1967. He was a mechanic and enjoyed 4 wheeling.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson of the home; daughters, Amanda Kaylor of Lenoir, Ashley Clawson and husband Jason of Elk Park, Amber Johnson of Lenoir, Aimee Johnson of Lenoir; step-daughters, Jennifer Wyatt of Lenoir, Crystal Fenner and husband Charles of Lenoir; sisters, Irma Higgins, Donna Fillers, Linda Cole, Jessica Bouillion all of Lenoir; nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Danny Cooke officiating. Interment in the Johnson Cemetery.
