Mrs. Julia Whitehead Miller, 86, Ivy Hall Nursing Home, formerly of Courtyard Apartments, Elizabethton, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at Ivy Hall.
Mrs. Miller was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Isaac and Cecilia Hughes Whitehead. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Edgar Miller; three brothers; three sisters; a grandson, David Paul Miller; a great-granddaughter, Goldie G. Miller; and her special friend, Sarah Williams.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Valley Forge House of Prayer. She was a longtime member of WOTM No. 1606.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie R. and Barbara Miller, Elizabethton, and James E. and Stony Miller, Butler; three daughters, Mildred Pittman and Margaret Burchett, both of Indiana, and Barbara Cable, Elizabethton; and a sister, Arizona Hopson, Hampton. Thirteen grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Taylor "Ike" and Cecie Hughes Whitehead. She was a retired employee in the dietary department of the Hillview Health Care Center. She was a member of the Pearce's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, but attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Hopson; five sisters, Julie Miller, Celia Simerly, Nancy Jeanette Hill, Hattie Jane Whitehead and Virginia Kistner; and by seven brothers, Everett, Elmer, Henry Allen, William Earl, Frank Stewart, Clarence and John A. Whitehead. "Mrs. Hopson was the last surviving granddaughter of John and Nancy Snyder Whitehead."

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Madlyn and Gary Smith, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Carol Hopson, Hampton; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Orman, Garry "Shannon" Hopson, Rachel Tingle, Heather Garrison, Brian Hopson, Donna Hopson, Johnnie Wilson, Jessica Buckles, Trina and Belinda; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dave Morgan officiating. The eulogy will be given by Justin Buckles. Graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Whitehead Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Pearce's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Choir. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, will be Rod Whitehead, Ed Miller, Jimmy Whitehead, John Garrison, Justin Buckles and Dillard Whitehead. ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Rhoda Cates Hyder, 99, 122 Old Stateline Road, Elizabethton, TN, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at her residence.

A native of Carter County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Sallie Whitehead Cates.

Mrs. Hyder retired as a teacher from Valley Forge Elementary School. Mrs. Hyder has been a valuable resident of Carter County for her entire life and was still an active member of the church she grew up in, Doe River Baptist Church. She has evinced her deep faith in a variety of important church jobs, as the Training Union Director, as a tireless worker with youth, as Supervisor of the Watauga Lodge of the Watauga Baptist Association, and as Director of the Summer Goodwill Center for the Watauga Baptist Association.

Mrs. Hyder served expertly on the first Tennessee Advisory Council on Aging and was later appointed by Governor Lamar Alexander to the Tennessee Commission on Aging (1981-1990). She belonged to the Roan Mountain Garden Club, the Hampton Garden Club, the ZETA, IOTA Chapter of East Tennessee State University, the Roan Mountain Eastern Star, the Carter County / Elizabethton Senior Citizens, the Elizabethton Woman's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has also served admirably as President of the Carter County PTA Council and the Valley Forge PTA, was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Parent Teachers Association, served as President of the Carter County Retired Teachers Association and served diligently on the Elizabethton Public Library Board of Directors. In each of these capacities, she has reflected the finest traditions of the Volunteer State.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hyder was preceded in death by her husband, Nat E. Hyder Sr., May 10, 1970; a daughter, June Evelyn Walsh, January 2003; a grandson, Paul Marshall Hyder; a great-grandson, Marine Lance Corp. Nason Michael Hopkins; two sisters, Carrie Street and Pearl Roberts; four brothers, Jim Cates, John Cates, William Cates and Paul Cates; and a special friend, Dr. Harley Fite.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Nat Edens Hyder Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, Johnson City, TN; a daughter, Dr. Lois Gretchen Fortune and her husband, David Lee, Brasilia, Brazil; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Several nieces and nephews and very special friends, Martha Bunton Query, Unicoi, TN, and Nancy Garland, Elizabethton, TN, also survive.

Ethel Hill Miller, age 89, formerly of Hampton, went to be with her Lord Saturday, January 1, 2011 in the Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late A.B. and Hillie Whitehead Hill. Mrs. Miller was a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church and attended Rittertown Baptist Church. She was a former employee of the Dave Simerly Store, and enjoyed gardening and keeping her lawn up. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Romulus S. Miller who died on January 5, 1967; four sisters, Katie Hill, Bell Campbell, Bonnie Stanley, and Maxine Honeycutt; and six brothers, Jim Hill, Walter Hill, Floyd Hill, Clyde Hill, Efford Hill, and Glenn Hill. She is survived by a special niece and nephew, Pauline and George Smith, Hampton; three great nieces, Alesia Ramsey, Shona Fritts, and Terri Berry; a great-great niece, Shelbie Morgan, great-great nephew, Seth Ramsey; and a special friend, Emmie Honeycutt. She is also survived by several additional nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Ethel Hill Miller will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late William Warren (W.W.) and Celia Belle Teague Stephens. Mrs. Manning had built airplanes for the U.S. Navy and also worked at Yates Remnant Shop for twenty years. She enjoyed sewing and crafts. Mrs. Manning was a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton, and the Fidelis Sunday School Class at First Christian Church. She worked in the Church nursery for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Cartha Chesser, Oscar Stephens, Ida Pate, William Stephens, Clara Kyte, Laura Kyte, Harold Stephens, Hazel Vanhuss, John Stephens, and an infant sister, Mary Ruth Stephens. Survivors include her husband of fifty-nine years, Paul T. Mr. Teague died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998 at Masters Health Care Center in Algood.

He was born March 30, 1918 in Johnson City to the late Oscar Lee and Laura Mae Sammons Teague. He was a retired maintenance man and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.

His family includes daughter Helen Ball of Cookeville; son Harry Teague of Middletown, Ohio; two step daughters, Diane Koss of Canton, Mich., and Bevery Siekierka of Garden City, Mich.; three granddaughters, Tammy Bass of Cookeville, Raylene Daniels of Nashville, and Tina Teague of New York City, New York.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Davis Teague.

He was born on September 18, 1932 in the Happy Valley Section of Carter County the youngest child of Oscar Lee & Laura Mae Sammons Teague.
He was a graduate of Mary Hughes High School, Piney Flats. He was a retired Staff Sgt. From the Missile Command of the United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran.
He moved from St. Matthews, South Carolina to Blountville last July. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters: Verna Grace Dykes and Tina Nelma Woods both of Johnson City and his brothers: Jesse Dayton Teague of Livonia, Michigan, Everette Kyle Teague, Johnson City, Albert Brice Teague of Cleveland, Ohio and Orville Curtis Teague of Taylor, Michigan.
He is survived by one sister-in-law: Kate Teague of Johnson City and a host of nieces & nephews.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - June Odom Whitehead, 90, Roan Mountain, passed away at the Waters of Roan Highlands on Sunday January 19, 2020.

June was the daughter of the late Thomas and Laura Barnett Odom. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Byrl Whitehead, two daughters, Sherrye Reine and Yvonne Whitehead and one granddaughter, Beth Reine Holloway. She was also preceded by one sister, Florence Odom Stevens and two brothers, Ford and Clyde Odom.

June was a homemaker and worked with the Girl Scouts in Hampton, TN and Taylor, MI for 14 years. June was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church where she worked with the youth. In past years she was a member of Sunset Freewill Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies Sunday School Class.

She is survived by a grandson, Brett Reine and wife Rebecca Reine of Jacksonville, NC and six great grandchildren, Logan Reine, Sloane Reine, Hunter Reine, Isabel Reine, Brick David Reine and Thomas Holloway. She is also survived by her caregivers and son-on-law, Tom Reine and wife Vanessa Reine. There are several nieces and nephews and one special niece Delores Honeycutt.

He loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Narvel & Louis Whitehead and two sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone.

He served in the United States Army. He was a retired Tool & Die Maker. Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Dale Roberts Whitehead. Juanita Whitehead Taylor, 91, of Elizabethton, passed from this life to her eternal life on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, following a lengthy illness. Juanita was born on November 14, 1927 to the late Frank Stuart and Jennie Morton Whitehead. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Fate Whitehead, and an infant sister, Ethel.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 68 years, Walter Taylor, and daughters, Marlene (Richard) Good and Donna (Dan) Schumaier; her grandsons, John (Ketasha) Goodwin and Jordan Grindstaff; three great-grandchildren, Graham, Gracen and Gretchen Goodwin; along with several nieces and nephews.
Juanita was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. She loved being outdoors and was happiest in her garden or yard. She loved animals and had several special pets through the years. She also loved feeding the birds and watching and identifying them.

Rod Whitehead, 83, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at his home on November 5, 2021. Born on the 5th of November 1938 at Tiger Creek to Betty Jo Lyons Whitehead and Everett Whitehead, Rod was well-travelled, but lived most of his life in upper East Tennessee with his family. A fierce patriot and leader amongst men, he proudly served 27 years in the military, and was a Gulf War veteran. He was also the State Electrical Inspector for Tennessee for 40 years and was well known and respected throughout the region.
Rod Whitehead — a man of impact and purpose — will be remembered for many things, but mainly he will be remembered for the strength of his character, his presence, courage, generosity, kindness, warmth, directness, loyalty, humour, and unwavering values. He inspired those around him, freely offering his wisdom and encouragement. One of his favourite sayings was: ‘Everything has a season’. For his part, he lived four full seasons, each of which was blessed by the richness of God’s love, as well as that of his many family members and friends.
Rod is survived by his wife, Trena G. Whitehead, of 59 years; his two daughters, Wendy Whitehead and Amy R. Whitehead; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Diane Bishop; and three brothers, James (Jimmy), Philip, and Dillard. A loving, protective, and supportive husband, father, friend, brother, cousin, brother-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather, Rod Whitehead will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Phillip Wayne Whitehead, 76, of Elizabethton, passed away on March 17, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center after a long battle with diabetes and dementia.
Phillip was a native of Carter County and a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1964. He was the son of the late Everett and Betty Jo Lyons Whitehead.
Phillip was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Rod.
Survivors include his brothers, James “Jimmy” and wife Reba, and Dillard and wife Kathy; his sister, Diane Bishop and husband Jim; and a sister-in-law, Trena.
Phillip served with the United States Army successfully completing a Wheel and Track Vehicle Course at Fort Knox, Ky. He served in Germany at the rank of E5 and was honorably discharged in 1968. After his military service, he attended ETSU and Steed College majoring in Business, Business Law as well as Finance and Principles of Management.
There will be a private family service with interment to follow in the Whitehead Family Cemetery.

To the late Elmer & Effie Holtzsclaw Whitehead. He was a graduate of Hampton High School and East Tennessee State University. Charles retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service. He was retired as Environmental Services Director of Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He had lived in Florida since 2003. He was a member of the Fil-Am. He was a member of the Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Janet McCorkle.

Janet Bernice Whitehead McCorkle, 69, of Martinez, Ga., passed away Monday, June 20, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born October 13, 1946 in Hampton, Tenn., to the late Elmer and Effie Holtzsclaw Whitehead.
Janet had lived in Florida and Georgia most of her life. In earlier years, she attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church in Hampton.
Survivors include her daughter, Javonia Oliver Everhart and her husband Mike; two grandchildren, Leanna Powell and Carey Powell and wife Heather; two great-grandchildren, Brian and Jackson Powell; two sisters, Joyce Matherly, Elizabethton, and Phyllis Vines and husband Harry, Elizabethton; and two brothers, Charles Whitehead and wife Grace, Pensacola, Fla., and Leslie Whitehead and wife Gloria, Hampton. BUTLER - James Lester Miller, 73, Butler passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late James Edgar & Julia Whitehead Miller. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Piercetown Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Joyce Dean "Stony" Miller and a brother: Eddie.

Judy Ann Cates Honeycutt, 68, of Hampton, beloved wife of Gilbert Honeycutt, entered into Heaven’s portals on September 24, 2015 after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Hampton, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late William and Zemma Gouge Cates. She had endured almost 40 years of medical problems including surviving five open heart surgeries and breast cancer. Nonetheless, she was a fighter who was determined to live her life to the fullest.

She taught school at Midway, Cloudland, and Hampton Elementary for twenty-three years before being directed to retire by her doctors.

She was a member of the Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church where she was the pianist for twenty-five years before joining the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton in 2001. She loved attending her Sunday school class, The Messengers, and singing in the Sanctuary and Senior Choirs.

Judy took great pleasure in gardening and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed travelling and had visited Mexico, Canada, and many states. She especially delighted in a recent family trip to Hawaii. Judy and Gilbert served as information desk volunteers for Mountain States hospital for several years making many friends.

Her greatest joy was her family and she adored spending time with them, whether hosting a large holiday party, going out to eat or simply talking on the phone.

Those left to cherish her memory, in addition to her husband of 46 years, include her children, daughter, Nancy Carol Honeycutt, Los Angeles, California and son, Mark Edward Honeycutt and wife Kara, Jonesborough. She also is survived by her grandchildren, the pride of her life, Karly Rae-Ann Honeycutt and Hudson Mark Honeycutt. Her siblings include one brother, William Cates, Jr. and wife Sally, Atlanta, Georgia and three sisters, Thelma Jaynes, Hampton, Doris and Garland James, Unicoi, and Linda Joy and Ben Williams, Elizabethton. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Priscilla Rouse and her husband Robert, Bristol, Tennessee and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express thanks to all those who helped during Judy’s extended illness including Dr. Rachel Monderer, and the staff of Johnson City Medical Center and Quillen Rehabilitation Hospital.

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Nat Edens "Ed" Hyder, Jr. M.D., 86, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center. Dr. Hyder was born in Hampton on March 14, 1929. He started high school at Hampton High School and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1946. He attended Milligan College before joining the Army in June of 1947 after serving as a clerk and medic in the army he enrolled at East Tennessee State College to earn a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He also certified to teach at that time. He went on to attend and graduate from University of Tennessee College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in June of 1954.

Dr. Hyder practiced medicine until 2009. He served in Knoxville, TN, Tazewell, VA, Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital in Louisiana, worked in Medical Management of Radiation Accidents at Oak Ridge, also practicing in Chatom, AL, Erwin, TN, Johnson City, TN and with Rural Health Consortium at the Bluff City Clinic and his last several years at the Dry Creek Clinic in Erwin, TN.

During his career Dr. Hyder also served several communities, the State of Tennessee and his nation in many capacities. He was a longtime Railroad Physician with CSX. He served as a Nuclear Medical Consultant and Plant Physician at Nuclear Fuel Services at various times from 1970 until 1992.

He has served as president of the Erwin Civitan Club, the Erwin Community Chest and United Way, as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Erwin YMCA. He is a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and has also served as Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Chatom, AL; First Christian Church in Erwin and the First Baptist Church in Erwin

In 1968 Dr. Hyder volunteered through a program with the American Medical Association to go to Vietnam as a civilian doctor treating Vietnamese civilians alongside Vietnamese nurses. There he performed many surgeries as he also treated the wounded. It was also a common occurrence that at night he would have to leave his quarters and go to the bunkers because of mortar attacks.

Dr. Hyder has served in many other capacities. In 1971 he was appointed by the Governor to the Tennessee Public Health Council, serving as secretary in 1976 and 1977. He was president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians in 1972. In 1974 he was named Family Physician of the Year for the state of Tennessee. He is a past delegate to the AMA. He served as president of the Tennessee Medical Association in 1983.

Dr. Hyder has also served in various positions with the James H. Quillen College of Medicine through ETSU; he stood as Acting Director of the Johnson City Family Practice Residency Program, a member of the Dean's Council and Admissions Committee, Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice and assistant Dean and Director of Medical Education at the Johnson City Medical Center.

In addition to his community support Dr. Hyder has served his country through the military in several capacities. In 1975 he joined the Medical Corps in the United States Army Reserve. He was promoted to Colonel in 1978. He became Commander of the 912th Combat Support Hospital in 1982. In 1985 he became the Commander of the 332nd Medical Brigade, leading over 150 Army Reserve Units in the USA. Before retiring he served as commander over 377th Combat Support Hospital and then transferred to 662 Medical Detachment of the National Guard. Though he retired from the National Guard in 1995 he later joined the National Defense Force Service Command, a part of Homeland Security. Here he has served as Brigadier General, Major General and Lieutenant General.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Hyder was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hurst Hyder; one son, Paul Marshall Hyder; two grandsons, Nason Michael Hopkins and J. Keith Hyder; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Hyder and a sister, June Evelyn Hyder Walsh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Gretchen E. Byrd and her husband, Travis S. Byrd; sons, Nat E. Farris Orlean Whitehead Nave, 82, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was born in the Tiger Valley Community on November 30, 1939. She was a wonderful daughter to the late Carmen and Bonnie Oxendine Whitehead.
Farris was the world’s best caretaker, baby sitter and homemaker. She loved to work with her hands in the garden and flowers and loved to can her vegetables. She was of the Free Will Baptist Faith and attended Sunset Free Will Baptist Church, when she was well.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Lee Nave; a daughter, Melissa Richardson; and a sister, Wilma Jean Lewis.

She was a Roan Mountain native. Sammie was a graduate of Cloudland High School class of 1947 also attended Milligan College and attained certification in music, East Tennessee State University with a BS Degree in Regular & Special Education and the University of Tennessee with a Counseling Certification.

Sammie was a teacher, counselor and administrator in the Carter County School System for 42 years.

She was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, and was presently a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church.

Faye was born in Carter County to the late Reece Hill and Hattie Street Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Hensley; a sister, Madge Campbell; her brothers-in-law, Darrell Campbell, James M. Hensley, Jr. and Paul Treadway; and a sister-in-law, Helen Hensley.

She attended Hampton High School and was the oldest member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. Faye was lovingly known as the "Dumpling Lady" for her wonderful chicken and dumplings.

Ivory Hill Lewis, age 88, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at her residence.

Ivory was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Dana and Ethel Connie Lacey Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Raymond Keith Lewis, Sr. on December 16, 2007; a daughter, Linda Ivory Ramsey on May 2, 2009; a grandson, Wayne Davis II; a son-in-law, Wayne Davis; a half sister, Sally Pierce; and a half brother, Bill Hill.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker, but along with her husband, had previously owned and operated Lewis' Service Station. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Mary was predeceased by her two brothers, Herman Hill and Bill Hill; sister, Sallie Hill Pierce; two half sisters, Mildred Hill and Ivory Lewis; and nephew, Robert Neil Moody.
Mary grew up in Hampton, Tenn., and graduated from Hampton High School. She married her husband, W.H. Shultz Jr. "Bill," on October 6, 1966. They had recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Mary lived in Elizabethton, Tenn., with her husband and children for over 25 years. During that time she worked at East Tennessee Undergarment. In 1990, Mary and Bill moved to Lenoir City, Tenn., where she took a job with TRW Koyo in Vonore, Tenn. She worked there until her retirement in 1995.
Mary's retirement years were spent loving on her family. She was a wonderful cook, loved vacations on the sandy Gulf Coast beaches and enjoyed every moment she could with her husband, children and grandchildren. Their activities and being "mamaw" gave her so much pride and joy. She was a selfless woman who never met a stranger and loved doing things for others.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Bill; her daughter, Cynthia Shultz Noles (Bruce); her son, W.H. Shultz III "Billy"; and grandchildren, Victoria Anne Noles, William Taylor Shultz and Madison Bailey Shultz, all of Lenoir City, Tenn. She is also survived by a brother, John Hill (Frieda), and two sisters, Jane Lyons and Susie Moody (Bob). She is also blessed by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins left to remember her.
Receiving of family and friends will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tenn. Following receiving of family and friends, the funeral service will be conducted by Dr. Alan King at 2 p.m. The graveside service and internment will follow immediately at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Etta Moore Hamm, age 88, formerly of 111 Allen Dr., Jonesborough, TN, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, June 22, 2004 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. She was born in Unicoi County, TN, and was a daughter of the late Jake and Mary Tolley Davis. She was a member of Westerly Heights Baptist Church in Johnson City, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Walter A. Moore Sr.; a son Walter A. Moore Jr.; two brothers; and one sister. Survivors include her husband, Fields H. Hamm, of Life Care Center of Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clyde and Eva Moore, of Hampton, William and Edith Moore, of Unicoi; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Helen Davis, of Greeneville, Ray and Eva Davis, of Johnson City; and one sister, Rachel Jackson, of York PA. Ten grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive. WESTLAKE, Ohio – Mr. Ray Davis, age 88, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Fairview Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Davis was born on October 29, 1921, to the late Jake and Mary Tolley Davis. He was a Unicoi County native, where he had lived until he joined the Navy in 1940. Mr. Davis married Eva Letta McInturff in 1945.

His military service spanned from 1940 to 1962, when he retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer E-9. During his time with the Navy, he lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, Annapolis, Maryland, Norfolk and Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

After his military retirement, Mr. Davis worked as a Logistics Management Specialist for the Department of the Navy and Naval Sea Systems Command as a federal employee in the Washington, D.C., area. Upon completing thirty-eight years with the government, which included his military and civilian service, he retired as a GS-14 Logistics Specialist and moved back to Johnson City, Tennessee, in 1979.

Ray and Eva were members of the Unicoi United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He also attended Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church.

In 2009, Mr. Davis moved to a retirement center in Westlake, Ohio, to be closer to his family

In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Letta McInturff Davis, on August 24, 2004; infant daughters, Cathy Lea Davis and Carol Lynne Davis; step-mother, Maude Ramsey Davis; two brothers, Jess Ernest Davis and Clyde J. Davis; three sisters, Etta Davis Moore, Hazel Davis Browder and Rachel Davis Jackson.

Survivors include his three daughters, Linda Jean Nutter and husband, Franklin, McLean, Virginia, Peggy Ann Reeves and husband, Joel, Springfield, Virginia, Pennie Marie Gray and husband, Gerald, Westlake, Ohio; Five loving grandchildren, Alycia Nutter Kiley and husband, James, Aaron Nutter, Shannon Reeves, Daniel Gray and Allison Gray; His brother, Reverend George Davis and wife, Helen; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

Rev. George Clinton (G.C.) Davis, age 86, passed away Sunday morning, May 22, 2011, at Takoma Hospital.

He touched many lives throughout all East Tennessee, ministering over 63 years, to young and old, rich and poor. He never met a stranger. Pastoring people was his life, and he loved telling people about Jesus. He pastored several churches in Tennessee, Nebraska, and Louisiana.

He is survived by his faithful loving wife of 65 years, Helen Arrowood Davis; son and daughter-in-law David and Glenda Davis of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law Rev. Rick and Susan Bradbury of Morristown; grandsons and wives, Daniel and Kristen Davis of Telford, Paul and Whitney Bradbury of Knoxville, and John and Shannon Bradbury of Rutledge; great-grandchildren Zeke, Caleb, Noah, Asaph, Joel, Corrie, and Phillip.

He was the son of the late Jake and Mary Tolley Davis. He was also preceded in death by great-grandson Patrick Bradbury; brothers Ray, Clyde, and Ernest; and sisters Etta Moore, Rachel Jackson, and Hazel Browder.

He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of West Side Church of God.

The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home. The body will be taken to Russellville Church of God Thursday, where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. preceding the home going celebration at 7:00 p.m. Rev. Tracy Colley, Rev. Born June 6, 1925 in Carter County, one of the children of the late Dayton and Mollie Ingram Whitehead. She attended Cloudland High School. Mrs. Butler retired as a Supervisor of the former East Tennessee Undergarment Factory.

She was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church. Her hobbies were shopping and sewing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Butler who died in 1984; by four brothers, Lawrence, Gene, Vernon and Darrell Whitehead; and three sisters, Voretta and Ruth Hill and infant Joyce Elizabeth Hill.

Survivors include two sisters, Geraldine Arney, Elizabethton and Peggy Whitehead, Elk Park, North Carolina; two brothers, Byrl Whitehead and his wife June, Roan Mountain and Brady Lee Whitehead and wife Deloris, Hampton, Virginia; several nieces & nephews and great and great great nieces & nephews.

A native of Carter County, and born in Roan Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Dayton and Mollie Ingram Whitehead.
Wanda was a graduate of Cloudland High School and attended East Tennessee State College. She was employed as a CNA at Hillview Health Center for 30 years. Wanda was an avid UT Sports Fan, especially football. She had season tickets for over 45 years.
Wanda loved family gatherings, going to Daytona Beach and shopping. She was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Byrl, Brady (BL), Lawrence, Gene, Vernon and Darrell Whitehead, and five sisters, Lola Butler, Voretta Hill, Ruth Hill, Peggy Whitehead and Infant Joyce Elizabeth Whitehead.
Although she never had any children of her own, she was a mother to many.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She is also survived by a special friend and companion, Saint.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, September 10, at Memorial Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Peggy Charlyeene Whitehead passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019. She was born on September 22, 1939 in Roan Mountain, Tenn., and was the daughter of Dayton and Mollie Whitehead of Whitehead Hill, Roan Mountain. She was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church and was retired from North American Rayon in Elizabethton.
Peggy enjoyed spending time with her daughter, granddaughter, son-in-law, and her grandpups, Josie and Candy. Most of her days were spent with special friends at Blue Ridge Housing in Elk Park, N.C. Her life-long love was watching NASCAR and cheering for Jeff Gordon. She also enjoyed her early morning visits to the RAMS Rack in Newland, N.C.
Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Mike Davis of Roan Mountain; granddaughter and husband, Kaylea and Derek Shelton of Elizabethton; sister, Geraldine Arney of Hampton; and a special niece and husband, LaGina and David Vaught of Jonesborough, Tenn. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dayton; her mother, Mollie; brothers, Byrl, Brady "BL", Lawrence, Gene, Vernon and Darrell Whitehead; and sisters, Lola Butler, Voretta and Ruth Hill and infant Joyce Elizabeth Whitehead.

Margaret Whitehead Shaw, 86, of Roan Mountain, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at JCMH to join her Heavenly Father and Savior.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Milburn Whitehead and Mayme Carrie Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Kay Keith Shaw; an infant son, Glenn Holland; and two brothers, Warren Julian and Wayne Whitehead.
Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker and enjoyed reading her scriptures, painting, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those surviving her are her seven children, son Frank Holland (Katie), daughter Marga Wilke, son James Shaw (Belinda), daughter Barbara Sexton (Charles), daughter Karen Boone (Jeff), son John Shaw (Shannon), and Jerome Shaw (Miranda). She had 14 precious grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a lifelong cherished cousin, Opal Russell, whom she considered a sister; a dear friend, Elizabeth Reeves; and two special friends from church, Beulah Puckett and Odleen Perry.
Mrs. Shaw attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was an active member.
It was Mrs. Shaw's wishes to have a graveside service to celebrate her life. It will be held on Monday, September 11, at 11 a.m. at the Captain Nelson Cemetery, Ripshin Mountain, with Bishop Trent Spaulding officiating and Anna Beucler directing the music. Pallbearers will be selected from the family. The family wishes to express their thanks for the excellent care that Mrs. Shaw received from the excellent ICU nurses and the wonderfully compassionate nurses and doctors from the 4300 Wing who took care of our mother.

WATAUGA - Geneva Hill Elliott, 86, Watauga, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at the residence of her daughter.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Anderson & Bell Whitehead Hill. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Elliott was of the Baptist Faith. She loved gardening & working in her flowers. She also worked along with her husband in the operation of their family farm. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Jack Elliott who passed away July 3, 2011, by a grandson, Charles Harrald, a brother, Anderson Hill, Jr. and two sisters: Mary Mundy and Phyllis Elliott

BUTLER - Raymond Hill, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at his home in Butler, Tennessee. Born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Floyd and Ruth Whitehead Hill. Raymond was a graduate of Hampton High School and later went on to obtain bachelor and masters degrees from East Tennessee State University. As a life-long educator, Raymond began his career as a teacher at a two-room school in Poga, Tennessee before moving on to spend 25 years as a teacher and assistant principal at Hampton High School. He also served as principal at Siam Middle School and Hampton Elementary School before transitioning to leadership roles at the Carter County Board of Education. He served as Assistant Director of Schools from 1997-1999 and ultimately served as Director of Schools from 1999 until his retirement in 2001. Raymond was inducted into the Carter County Educators Hall of Fame in 2019 in recognition of his contributions in educating thousands of Carter County children during his nearly 42 years of serving as a teacher, principal, coach, and mentor.

As a man of unwavering faith in God, Raymond was a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church in Butler, Tennessee. He previously was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church in Roan Mountain, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and music director. Raymond most recently commemorated 55 years as a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566.

In addition to his work and church duties, Raymond served on the Northeast Community Credit Union Board of Directors for 28 years. During that time, he served 17 years as Vice Chairman and the last year as Chairman of the Board.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a brother, Eddie Hill. Survivors include his wife of nearly 48 years, Karen; two daughters, Susan and Lindsey, as well as a son-in-law, John Feathers. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Nicholas Kosco of Bradenton, Florida; his grandchildren: Reagan, Alyssa, and Jake Feathers and Makayla Dockery. Additional survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins; special niece and nephew LaGina and David Vaught; An honorary daughter, Jamie McQueen as well as special friends and travel companions, James “Monroe” Stevens and Sandra Forbes.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14th, preceded by visiting hours from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Pastor Dennis Wilson officiating. a special eulogy will be delivered by Kevin Ward, and music will be provided by Bill Anderson. Those serving as pallbearers include: John Feathers, David Vaught, Junior McQueen, Jason McQueen, Eddie Lewis, Adam Morton, Greg Marlow, and Chris Pierce. Honorary pallbearers include: Bernie Hill, Nick Kosco, Kevin Ward, Dallas Williams, Bill Shoun, Jerry Bowers, his church family, Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, and members of the Northeast Community Credit Union Board of Directors. The Entombment services will be held on Thursday, December 15th at 1:00 p.m. at the Mausoleum of Faith at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton, Tennessee. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Roan Mountain Lodge # 566 following the funeral service.

HAMPTON — Luster McKinney Stevens, 91, Hampton passed away on Monday, January 25, 2016, in the Hermitage Health Center.

Born in Carter County to the late Wilson & Bell Hill McKinney. She lived her entire life on Brown's Branch Road.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Conley Jerome Stevens, Sr.; by two grandchildren, Connie Bowers and Melissa Bowers; and three sons-in-law, Terry Hill, Billy Dan Harrell and Randy McKinney; two brothers, Bruce McKinney and Jack McKinney.

Luster was a life time member of Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church and the oldest member of the church. She loved working in her flowers and visits from her children and grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons & daughters-in-law, Bud & Pat Stevens, Unicoi, and Bruce & Shirley Stevens, Hampton; six daughters & sons-in-law, Wilma & Willard Bowers, Ann Hill, Karen Stevens and Brenda Harrell all of Elizabethton, Loretta McKinney and June McKinney, Hampton; ten grandchildren, Aaron & Polly Bowers, Michael & Brandy Hill, Jamie and Marti McKinney, Christopher & Tracy Stevens, Brian & Tonya Stevens, Teresa & Greg Mathes, Sheri & Ken Trivette, Tammy Hill, Todd McKinney and Tina & John Glover; eleven great grandchildren, Kendra, Andrew, Brooke, Conley, Danielle, Marcus, Jake, Katie, Daniel, Jagger, and Kristen; four great great grandchildren, Ashton, Parker, Carmindy and Paisley.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Carl Grindstaff and Rev. Jack Lyons officiating.

CHARLIE DELOACH, JR.
Charlie Deloach Jr., age 16, died at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Deloach, 506 Elm Street Friday morning at 1:00 o'clock after an illness of three months.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Deloach; two brothers, Richard and Kenneth; one sister, Janice; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Deloach; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Odom, Hampton; and a number of uncles and aunts.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the home, 506 Elm Street, with the Rev. George Westmoreland officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Kenneth Loyd Deloach, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013, in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles and Bonnie Odom Deloach. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended George Washington University.
He retired from the United States Army after 20 years of service. Following his retirement he was employed for 14 years as a Perquiman agent for the General Services Administration, US Government.
Kenneth and Pat had lived in Woodbridge, Virginia, for 17 years before returning to Elizabethton. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, where he had formerly served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and served in other capacities of the church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Patricia Nave Deloach; One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Mary Jane & Morgan French, Houston, Texas; One Son & Daughter-In-Law: Kenneth Allen and Donna Deloach, Suffolk, Virginia; Two Grandchildren: Edward Clifton French and Meredith Holly French, both of Baton Rouge, La.; His special "Little Friend," Madeline. Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating.

BULLS GAP — Janice Ruth Deloach McClanahan, 62, 899 Saint Clair Road, Bulls Gap, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, as the result of an automobile accident.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Bonnie Odom Deloach. She had lived in Hawkins County for several years. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. In her earlier years, she was employed at E. Watts John’s Insurance Agency. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. McClanahan was preceded in death by Her Husband, Frank McClanahan, March 11, 2002; and Three Brothers: Charles Franklin Deloach, Richard D. Deloach and an Infant brother.

ELIZABETHTON - Judge Arden Lincoln Hill of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away peacefully on March 3, 2023, Judge Hill was born in Carter County, Tennessee, a son of the late Dayton and Nell (Lacy) Hill. In addition to his parents, Judge Hill was also preceded in death by his sister, June Hill Morton; his brother, Reverend Jack Hill; and his beloved daughter, Cynthia June Hill.

Judge Hill was a proud United States Army Air Corp veteran, having served his country valiantly in World War II. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and a graduate of the University of Tennessee Law School. He began his distinguished judicial career as the General Sessions Judge for Carter County, serving 8 years and then served an additional 24 years for the First Judicial District as Criminal Court Judge. Judge Hill was a loyal and devoted member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for over 65 years and also as Deacon Emeritus. He was also a Sunday School teacher at Immanuel and was the last member of the Adult Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. He also served as a deaf communicator, using sign language at the church. Judge Hill enjoyed ETSU basketball and was also a member of the President’s Club at ETSU. He loved hunting and nature in general.

Those left to remember and cherish Judge Hill’s legacy include his loving wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Ann (McCampbell) Hill; his son, Mark Kevin Hill of Elizabethton; and his granddaughter, Catherine Voretta Hill of New York City; one nephew, Mike Hill; and one niece, Karen Hill Owen and her daughter, Caroline Hill Owen. Many fellow church family, neighbors, friends and extended family also survive and will miss him tremendously.

A celebration of Judge Arden Hill’s life will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Monday, March 6, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Pastor Tim Tapp and Pastor David Hyers officiating. A time for friends to visit with the family will be conducted between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Monday.

Judge Hill will be laid to rest following the service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside. Active pallbearers will be Mike Hill, Gary Owen, Bill Hampton and Greg Bowers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Carter County Bar Association and former judges including Judge Robert Cupp, Don York, Bill Grover, Dr. Larry Proffitt, Pres Wolfe, Preston Wolfe and Will Grover.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - Yvonne Kay Whitehead, 63, of Roan Mountain, TN went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 22, 2017 after a battle with cancer.

Yvonne was born on August 16, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan. She is the daughter of June Whitehead and the late Byrl Whitehead. She was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Taylor, Michigan where she resided for several years before joining the Army in 1978 where she received Medical Lab Assistance Training. She retired from Michigan Correctional Facility.

She was preceded in death by her father, Byrl Whitehead, one sister V. Sherrye Reine and one niece, Beth Reine.


She is survived by her mother June Whitehead, Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Vanessa Reine, nephews, Britt Reine and Thomas Holloway and several aunts, uncle and cousins, and special friends Terry Catt and Vicky Curtise.

She was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church where she enjoyed her church duties.

SUGAR GROVE, Va. — Dubie L. Hayes, 46, lost her battle with Leukemia and went to be with the Lord on November 30, 2017, peacefully at her home.
Dubie was born in Killeen, Texas and was preceded in death by her father, Eddie Miller; maternal grandparents, Hunter and Pauline Williams; and paternal grandparents, Jim and Julia Whitehead Miller.
She attended South Fork Baptist Church. She loved gardening and taking care of her goats and three dogs, Jake, Ellie and Nyx.
Dubie is survived by her husband, Reid Hayes; her children, Samuel and Daniel Bowers and Seth Pate, all of Elizabethton, Tenn.; her mother, Barbara Miller of Elizabethton, Tenn.; sister, Nickie Miller Vincent and husband Jeff of Shelbyville, Tenn.; brother, Eddie Miller II of Elizabethton, Tenn.; nephews, Trenton Hayes and Logan Griffey, and a niece, Tristen Griffey, that she and Reid were raising along with two step-daughters, Morgan Hayes of Alabama and Maggie Kirkbride of Cheyenne, Wyo.; nieces, Hannah Vincent and Emily Vincent Rogers and husband Cory; her mother-in-law, Fran Hayes; and close dear friends, Dawn Trivette, Lori and Jamie Carr, Jamie Goodman and Eddie Henson.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 3, at Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Kenny Rich officiating. Mrs. Linda Lewis Ramsey, 62,Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord following a courageous battle with ALS, on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mrs. Ramsey was a native of Carter County and the daughter of Ivory Hill Lewis of Elizabethton and the late Raymond Keith Lewis, Sr. She was a member of Union Baptist Church where she served as the organist for many years. She was a dedicated RN who worked in Hospice care. She was the most loving and caring mother and grandmother who was especially devoted to her grandchildren. She really enjoyed working in her flowers and she loved butterflies. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Ramsey is survived by her husband, John Ramsey, Sr., Hampton; a son and daughter-in-law, John Ramsey Jr. and his wife Christa, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Leighton, John Evan, Devin, Landon, Lyndie and Connor Ramsey; two sisters, Brenda Davis and her husband, Wayne, Hampton; Glenna Morton, Elizabethton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray Lewis, Jr. and his wife, Maxine; Dana "Randy" and his wife, Eddie, all of Elizabethton; Rex and Angela Lewis, Johnson City; special friends, June Bailey, Diane Pierce Maxwell, Yvonne Shoun, Linda Guy, Dorothy Goodwin, Ida Hinkle, Elva Vines, Dottie Higgins and Pam Winchester. Stella Mae Buchanan, age, 85 of Hampton passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 at her home following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Will and Ruth Barnett Tolley. In addition to her parents Stella was also preceded in death by a grandson Dustin Eric Scott Buchanan.
