Colleen loved working at the Shady Lawn Restaurant, where she enjoyed talking with and serving her customers. She never met a stranger and was always cheerful and full of life. People would drive for miles just to eat her magnificent cooking. Colleen also enjoyed traveling and was still driving at the young age of 93.

Betty Ann Cornett Brown, age 80, of Elk Park, NC went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 15, 2019, at Life Care of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Julie Taylor Cornett. She was also preceded in death by her Husband: Basil Brown, who passed away in 2013; Grandson: John Milan Brown; Sisters: Clarise and Dorothy; and Brothers: Buddy, Burman, Burton and Wayne. Betty was a member of Open Door Baptist Church and Riverwalk Quilters Guild. She worked for Glen Raven Mills and later worked with Appalachian Regional Health System at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Surviving is her Daughter: Debra Taylor and husband, Kim, of Newland; Sons: Jerry Brown and wife, Denise, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Michael Brown and wife, Amy, of Mountain City, Tenn.; 10 Grandchildren; 18 Great-grandchildren and a Sister-in-law: Natalie Cornett, of Newland. Several Nieces, Nephews, her church family and extended family also survive.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, in the Hughes Cemetery on Baxter Hughes Road. Rev. Tommy Carver, Rev. Brian Griffith and Rev. Don Ford officiated.

A native of Tampa, Florida, he was born April 18, 1931 a son of the late Obeth Tip and Lenora Driggers Aldridge.
He Was a graduate of Appalachian State University and retired from the Toe River Health District in 1993, where he had served as Director. Cliff was instrumental in the formation of the Crossnore Volunteer Fire Department, where he had served as Assistant Chief and Secretary. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Linville Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite, Asheville Body.
Cliff was a United States Navy Veteran, having served his country during the Korean Conflict.
Along with his parents, Cliff was preceded in death by his: brothers, Elmer Aldridge and Cullie Aldridge.
Family, friends, and pallbearers will gather at the Crossnore Baptist Church Cemetery on Monday morning at 10:50 am for graveside services. Military honors will be provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW.

Paul W. Burleson, 92, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at his residence.
A native of Spruce Pine, N.C., he was a son of the late Robert Burleson and Ida Ollis Burleson Minton. He had lived most of his life in Carter County.
Paul was retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 48 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He was also a member of the Gallon Pin Program of the American Red Cross. Paul attended Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Guy and Johnny Burleson; a sister, Cora Burleson; and two grandsons, Dennis and Mark Matherly.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary Townsend Burleson; his children, Madeline Matherly and husband Carroll, Johnson City, Paulette Ashby and husband Bernard, Princeton, W.Va., Ginger Burleson, Trish Hughes and Tammy Moore and husband Mike, all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Phipps, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Carl Hatley.
Funeral services for Paul W. Burleson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mark Fowler and Pastor Justin Deaton officiating. MINNEAPOLIS, N.C. — Mava Young Heaton, age 90, of Minneapolis, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Roan Highlands Nursing Home in Roan Mtn., TN.

A native of Avery County, she was born March 12, 1922, a daughter of the late P.L. and Nell Burleson Young.

She was a member of Minneapolis Christian Church and enjoyed working in the church, her flower garden, collecting angels, keeping a daily journal and telling stories about her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mava retired from the Avery County Department of Social Services.

Along with her parents, Mava was preceded in death by her: husband, James E. Heaton; sisters, Ava Vance, Iva Johnson, Evanell Young; brothers, Howard Young, Dayton Young; son-in-law, Barry Spratt.

A devoted, wife, mother and Nanny, Mava has left to cherish her memory her: son, Jim H. Roma B. Melton passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 29, 2019, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her Husband: Caleb Melton; her Sisters: Nadine Howell, Ruby Richardson, Elizabeth Clark, and her Brother: Hobert Burleson.

She is survived by her three children: Stephen Melton, David Melton and Rebecca Melton. Roma was very active in the Banner Elk community and Lees McRae College, along with several other associations. Her heart was always in the mountains and will remain there.

She requested no funeral, only a sprinkling of her ashes around her husband's grave in the cemetery of the Presbyterian Church in Banner Elk. This will take place at 4 p.m. on July 14, 2019.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - Robert "Bob" Burleson, 81, of Roan Mountain, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 3, 2015.

He was a son of the late Robert Aaron and Virginia Shell Burleson and was born in Avery County, NC, although he lived his entire life in Roan Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Todd Burleson, a sister, Bobbie McKinney, two brothers, Eddie Burleson, Jim Burleson and a nephew Bill Burleson.

Mr. Burleson was a1952 graduate of Cloudland High School, a 1954 graduate of Lees-McCrae College and was a veteran of the United States Army. His career as a business/owner operator spanned 45 years and included Bob's Dairy Land in Roan Mountain, and O'Dellys in Elizabethton.

In addition to being a successful business man, he was a member of the Tennessee Restaurant Association, the National Restaurant Association and was named Tennessee Restaurateur of the Year in 1996. Mr. Burleson was also an elected member of the Tennessee State House and Senate, from 1972-1986. He was a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566 F&AM, the Jericho Shrine Temple, and the Gideons International. He was a lifetime member of Magill Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Gail Pritchard Burleson, of the home; a daughter, Scarlett Anderson and her husband, Rik, Roan Mountain; two sons, Victor Burleson and his wife, Nicole, Charleston, SC; Julian Burleson, Roan Mountain; a brother, Tom Burleson, Colfax, NC; nine grandchildren, Emmi Burleson, Megyn Jefferson and her husband, Sam, Sophi Burleson, Hobie Burleson, Alden Anderson, Baylor Anderson, Cayden Anderson, Anthony Robertson, and Tiffany Stiles; and three great-granddaughters. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, or at the home at any time.

James Randall Fletcher, 90, of Minneapolis, North Carolina passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022 at the Cranberry House.

Randall was born on April 28, 1932 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Paul Fletcher and the late Doxie Daniels Fletcher.

Randall graduated from Newland High School and then received his Associates Degree from Lees-McRae College. He joined the United States Army and served in Germany. Upon returning from Germany, he met the love of his life, Frances, and they were married July 11, 1959. He worked in the Insurance Department for both Cannon Memorial and Sloop Memorial Hospitals before joining the Town of Banner Elk as the bookkeeper. He found his niche serving as the County Manager for Avery County, which he served in that position for many years until his retirement in 1996.Randall loved to spend time outside in his yard, watching racing, and most importantly, spending time with his family. He was a Deacon with the Minneapolis Baptist Church and faithful member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Fletcher; mother, Doxie Fletcher; two brothers, Daniel Fletcher and Sonny Fletcher.

Randall leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 63 years, Frances Grindstaff Fletcher; daughter, Debbie (David) Cornett of Crossnore, NC; son, Jim (Lyn) Fletcher of Shallotte, NC; sister, Mollie Rary of Statesville, NC; granddaughter, Meg Fletcher of Athens, GA; grandson, Jay (Elizabeth) Fletcher of Greensboro, NC. Randall was a true hero to his family and has left a lasting legacy.

Services for Randall Fletcher will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Clifford Phillips and Rev. Rem Austin officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Interment will be in the Daniels Cemetery with military honors provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW.

Hilma Burleson Daniels, age 92, of the Hughes Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 18th, 2020.

A native of Erwin, TN but lived most of her life in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Doc and Della Griffith Burleson and wife of the late Nat Daniels.

She was also preceded in death by an infant son; a grandson, Steven Lynn Daniels; sisters: Edlois McCrary and Nell Carter and brothers: Richard and Joe Burleson.

Hilma was a member of Victory Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed collecting dolls.

She worked at Crossnore Hospital for 16 years and loved helping Dr. E. H. Smith and Aldie Johnson, R.N. deliver babies. Hilma also worked at Broughton Hospital for a number of years.

Surviving is her sons: Richard Daniels and wife, Elwanda, Sam H. Daniels and Tommy Daniels and wife, Jean, all of Newland; grandchildren: Chris Daniels, Shelly Luckadoo (Tony), Brian Daniels (Lora), Kenny Harrison Daniels, Jeffery Daniels (Dawn) and Jason Daniels (Deanna); fifteen great-grandchildren; brother, Rodney Burleson and wife, Norma, of Kingsport, TN and dear friend, "Kat" Shell of Shell Creek, TN. Several nieces, nephews and extended family members also survive.

Private family services will be held on Saturday. Burial will follow in the Harrison Daniel's Cemetery.

Dale Burleson, 66, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at his residence.

Dale was born on November 9, 1955 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Grover Olin Burleson and the late Sylvia Phillips Burleson. He was known for dressing up as Santa every Christmas for the children. Dale loved spending time with his family, being outside, and his flowers. He also loved listening to his Classic Rock music and John Boy and Billy in the morning.

He was preceded in death by his father, Grover Olin Burleson; mother, Sylvia Phillips Burleson; three brothers, Gene Burleson, Hobert Burleson, Jewel Burleson; five sisters, Betty Lingerfelt, Loretta Cate, Lois Johnson, Charlotte Burleson, Gwendolen Burleson.

Dale leaves behind to cherish his memory, two daughters, Sylvia (Marc Causby) Burleson of Newland, NC, Stephanie (Stetson McKinney) Burleson; brother, Danny Burleson; sister, Lena Sue Andrews; grandson, Oliver Causby. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Services for Dale Burleson will be announced by the family at a later date.

Mr. Burleson was born July 13, 1942, in Avery County, to the late Arnold and Oma Burleson. He was a member of Zion Road Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife: Mary Ruth Huskins Burleson; a Son: Brian Burleson; and Brothers: Eddie, Arnold, Tony and Gary.

Survivors include his Sons: Rick and Dwayne Burleson, both of Valdese; his Grandchildren: Jimmy Bright (RJ) and Nichole Burleson, Daniel Burleson, Allison Burleson, Dakota Burleson, Josh Burleson, Chris Burleson, David Burleson, Jessica Burleson, and Hailey and Holly Bennett; his Great-grandchildren: Haley and Prestin Bright, Zachary Burleson, Pazliegh Burleson, Emily Burleson, Skylar Burleson and Lexie Burleson; also surviving are his Siblings: "Rabun" Ray Burleson, "Matavia" Ann Shuffler, Sandra Motley and Betty Johnson.

Mr. Rabun Burleson, 75, of Valdese, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Burke Hospice & Palliative Care, following a period of declining health.

Rabun was born July 13, 1942, in Avery County, to the late Arnold Burleson and Oma Thelma Cole Burleson. He was a retired painter by trade and was a loving father, grandfather and brother to all his family.

In addition to his Parents, he was preceded in death by his Brothers: Eddie, Tony and Alton Burleson. Survivors include his Children: April Renee Brank of Connelly Springs, Shane Alan Burleson of Hickory and Chasity La'Na Burleson of Catawba. Also surviving are his Sisters: Betty Johnson, "Matavia" Ann Shuffler and Sandra Motley.

Known as "The Burleson Triplets," Rabun, Alton and Matavia lived in the Hughes community with their family, and numerous cousins prior to moving to the Morganton/Valdese area in the early 1960s.

They attended Newland schools, and were known throughout the local area as "a talented and harmonizing singing trio," in addition to being a very industrious trio both in the bean and cabbage fields, plus herb gathering. Their beautiful harmonies and joyful countenance will be missed by those who knew them!

Gary Buchanan, age 80, of Newland, NC passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1938, in Avery County, NC, a son of the late Stewart William Buchanan and the late Clara Hughes Buchanan.

Gary worked as truck driver and taught truck driving at Caldwell Community College for many years. He had served as a Magistrate for Avery County and was a Licensed Auctioneer. He was a member of the Newland United Methodist Church, where he had served on various committees in the church, the Linville Masonic Lodge and was a former member of the Newland Volunteer Fire Department.

A family-oriented man, Gary enjoyed traveling, and had visited most of the National Parks in the United States. His family and friends could always count on him to offer advice. Spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren was one of his greatest pleasures. Listening to Old Time Country and Bluegrass, you never knew when he would begin to dance. Gary never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with almost anyone. He particularly enjoyed spending time talking to old truck drivers.

Mike Aldridge, age 75, of Newland, NC went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.

He was born on March 30, 1944, in Crossnore, NC, a son of the late Carl Aldridge and the late Ruth Smith Aldridge.

Mike was a member of First Baptist Church of Newland. He was also a member of the Linville Masonic Lodge #489 where he served as Master for several terms. A former mayor of the Town of Newland, he also owned and operated Mike Aldridge Trucking Company with his wife Martha for more than 35 years. He enjoyed truck driving, operating heavy equipment, riding motorcycles and restoring old cars. He loved his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed listening to classic country and 1950s rock and roll, especially Jerry Lee Lewis. His favorite color was chrome but a close second was red.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; Brother: Tom Aldridge; Son: Michael Aldridge, Jr.
