    SAMUEL TURNER
    Last rites for Samuel L. Turner, age 61, who died at his home, 615 Pine street, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock following a brief illness, were held this afternoon from the Freewill Baptist church at 2:30 with the Rev. Clarence Howington officiating. Interment was in the family cemetery on Siam road.
    Mr. Turner had been special merchant policeman for the past few years, and was familiarly known as "Poss." He was a native of Carter county.
    Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Bowers; three sons, Noah, Jack and Howard; three sisters, Mrs. Dave Crumley, Mrs. Will Estep, Mrs. John Deloach; one brother, John Turner; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
    Active pallbearers were Roby Mast, Hacker Carriger, Maples Carriger, Gus Crumley, Sam Fair, B. A. Lipford.

    Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. from the home of his brother, Noah Turner of Elizabethton, with Rev. C. Y. Elkins in charge, assisted by Rev. Grant Laws.
    Burial was made in the Turner Cemetery.

    ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Gladys Mae Taylor, 91, formerly of Taylor Town Road, Elizabethton, died on Thursday, December 20, 2007, in Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

    She entered Heaven's gates to be with her precious Savior. She was a sweet and loving Mother, Grandmother and friend to all.

    Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Mary Belle Deloach Winters; her husband, Elwood Taylor; two sons, Lloyd Ray Taylor, Clifford Taylor; one daughter, Charlotte Morton; one brother and one sister.

    Mrs. Taylor is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and W.C. Rasnick, Elizabethton, Frances (Otcie) and Fred Sluder, Elizabethton, Vickie and Wayne Barry, Mountain City, Jenny and Ernest Rosenbaum, Ringold, GA; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas Taylor, Elizabethton, Kenneth and Barbara Taylor, Johnson City; one brother, Lloyd Winters, Elizabethton; seventeen grandchildren and several great and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a special friend, Gerald Clark of Life Care Elizabethton and several nieces and nephews.

    The funeral service for Mrs. Taylor will be conducted on Saturday, December 22, 2007, at 8:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel with Rev. Jackie Cole, Rev. Steve Burleson and Rev. Mike Robinson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ms. Becky Darnell, soloist. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 2:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 PM Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Active pallbearers will be Jim Nave, Terry Oliver, Darrell Hardin, David Collins, Gary Rosenbaum and Mike Rosenbaum. Honorary pallbearers will be Lustus Woods, Jr., Richard Blevins and Gary Smith. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday prior to the service and at the home of Diane Rasnick, 110 Little Avenue, Biltmore Community at other times.

    The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff, nurses and CNAs at Life Care Center of Elizabethton, especially Maxine, Kitty and Nina and to Caris Healthcare Hospice for all their help and concern for our Mother.

    Mr. Lloyd G. Winters, 89, formerly of 216 South Main Street, Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2009 at Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center following an extended illness.

    Mr. Winters was the son of the late Monroe and Mary Belle Deloach Winters and was a native of Carter County.

    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jordan Winters, in 1986; a brother, Robert Winters; two sisters, Gladys Winters Taylor and Hazel Winters.

    Mr. Winters was a retired printer from E.T.S.U. and worked at Pressman's House in Rogersville. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in WWII. He was a member and elder of Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elizabethton.

    Mr. Winters is survived by two nephews, Steve Winters and his wife, Cindy, Ocean Springs, MS, and Gregory L. Winters and his wife, Sally, Vancouver, WA. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

    The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 17, 2009, from 1:00-2:30 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM, following the visitation, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Dwight Basham officiating. Active pallbearers will be members of Memorial Presbyterian Church.

    Charlie Deloach Jr., age 16, died at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Deloach, 506 Elm Street Friday morning at 1:00 o'clock after an illness of three months.
    Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Deloach; two brothers, Richard and Kenneth; one sister, Janice; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Deloach; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Odom, Hampton; and a number of uncles and aunts.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles and Bonnie Odom Deloach. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended George Washington University.
    He retired from the United States Army after 20 years of service. Following his retirement he was employed for 14 years as a Perquiman agent for the General Services Administration, US Government.
    Kenneth and Pat had lived in Woodbridge, Virginia, for 17 years before returning to Elizabethton. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, where he had formerly served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and served in other capacities of the church.
    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Patricia Nave Deloach; One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Mary Jane & Morgan French, Houston, Texas; One Son & Daughter-In-Law: Kenneth Allen and Donna Deloach, Suffolk, Virginia; Two Grandchildren: Edward Clifton French and Meredith Holly French, both of Baton Rouge, La.; His special "Little Friend," Madeline.     ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Kenneth F. Taylor, 71, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Taylor, a son of the late Elwood R. and Gladys Winters Taylor, was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Taylor, who lost his life fighting in the Vietnam War, and a sister, Charlotte Morton.

    Mr. Taylor was a 1963 graduate of Elizabethton High School and a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving two tours in Vietnam, receiving two Bronze Stars, the National Service Defense Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Ribbon with two Silver Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He also served three years with the Tennessee National Guard. He worked at Ed Morse Saturn-Cadillac in Tampa, FL, from 1997-2007, then at Bill Gatton Mountain Empire Saturn where he worked in sales until General Motors discontinued the Saturn Brand and he retired. He attended Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church and was also a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center. He also really loved his pets, Sam and Patches, enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and football.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of thirty-three years, Barbara A. Pierce Taylor, of the home; a brother, Conway (Doug) Taylor, Johnson City; four sisters, Vickie Barry and her husband, Wayne, Mountain City; Diane Rasnick, and her husband, W.C., Elizabethton; Frances Sluder and her husband, Fred, Elizabethton; Jenny Rosenbaum, Ringold, GA; and his special friends, Kent and Lisa Gunderson, Nashville, TN. Several nieces and nephews, including a special great-niece, Makenzie Miller, also survive.

    A graveside service for Mr. Taylor will be conducted at 10:00 AM, on Friday, March 24, 2017, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Rev. Mark Potter and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Williams, Terry Barnett, Joe Caruso and John Barker. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.     Vickie was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed traveling, camping, arranging flowers, and loved her dog, “Little Bit”. She loved spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great nieces and nephews. She was an active member of First Freewill Baptist Church.
    Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 51 years, Wayne Barry; daughter, Angela Davis and husband Brad; sisters, Diane Rasnick and husband WC, Francis Sluder; grandchildren, Conner and Collin Davis; several nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters in law.
    The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Mountain City Funeral Home.     Margaret Geraldine Vanover, age 74, formerly of 136 Dallas McCracken Dr., Johnson City, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007 in Life Care Center of Gray following an extended illness. She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William Staten and Hildred Turner Vanover. Mrs. Vanover was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center. She retired as a home attendant with the First TN Human Resource Agency.
    Survivors include one son, Johnny Williams, Johnson City, one daughter, Sandra Williams, Elizabethton, three grandchildren, Johnny Scott Williams, Elizabethton, Jamie Harrison, Jonesborough, Jessica Harrison, Elizabethton, two great-grandchildren, Haley Harrison, Brendan Harrison and one brother and sister-in-law, Edward L. and Bessie Vanover, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    The funeral service for Mrs. Vanover will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25 in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Dr. Joe Sorah officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel prior to the service. Friends may also call at the home of her brother, Edward Vanover, 150 Vanover Rd., Johnson City at other times.

    Edward Lee Vanover, age 85, of Johnson City, TN made his journey home on Friday, January 22, 2021 at his residence.

    Edward was born in Elizabethton, TN to the late William Staton Vanover and Hildred Turner Hubbard.

    Edward was the business owner of Vanover Roofing Inc for over 40 years. He was a loving and caring man with many leadership attributes. Edward was very hardworking and would take the hard right over easy wrong in all that he did. Edward loved his home and his family. He was a mischievous jokester and had a wonderful sense of humor. Edward loved to work outdoors, maintain his property and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. He was an avid music lover who loved to sing around his house. Some of his favorite artists included Elvis, Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison. In his earlier days Edward enjoyed racing dirt track and riding his motorcycle. Even in his older days he loved to ride around and see the sights.

    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elizabeth Ann Turner, who raised him as a son, and William Turner; a son, Eddie Ray Vanover; sister, Margaret Geraldine Vanover; grandchildren, Sunny Conforti and Phillip Conforti. Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 65 plus years, Bessie Vanover; children, Debra Heatherly, Theresa Vanover, Sue Bradbury, David Vanover, Donna Stout Vanover, Larry Vanover, Lisha Vanover, Michael Tanner and wife Lauren Tanner; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren along with special friend, Annette Gibson; a special grandson, Nikolas Vanover and special granddaughter, Samantha Shomaker.
    There will be an open visitation at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 between the hours of 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM for those who would like to sign the guest book and pay their respects (the family will not be present).

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Butler and Mary Scalf Jenkins. Mr. Scalf was a brick mason and a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with his musical friends, playing golf and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Hill and Leroy Hill; a sister, Kay Church; and his father-in-law, Ray Wellman.     ELIZABETHTON - Phyllis Ann Odom, age 69, of Elizabethton, passed away on April 10, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Christine Scalf Hill and was born in Telford, TN on May 30, 1951. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Norris and her brother, Terry Hill. Phyllis was a retired CNT and enjoyed taking care of others. She loved animals, working in her flowers and going to yard sales.

    Those left to cherish her memories are her three children, Michelle White (Harold) of Watauga, Melvin Simmons (Becky) of Elizabethton, and Daniel Simmons of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Kelsey Simmons of Christiansburg, VA, Kristopher Simmons and Michael Simmons both of Elizabethton and Joshua White of Watauga; two brothers, Wayne Hill (Rose) and Ronnie Hill all of Elizabethton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Sandra Holder, Ralph Simmons, Sandi Simmons, Danny Norris and Ann Hill; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Angela Markland and Betty Barnes.     Debra Vanover Heatherly, 65, of Gray, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, from her residence. Debra was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to Bessie E. Bristol Vanover, of Johnson City, and the late Edward L. Vanover, of Elizabethton. In addition to her father, Debra was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Heatherly.
    Debra was a loving mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend who loved her family and the beach. She retired as a stained glass artist and had a great work ethic. Debra was known for going out of her way to make holidays special for her family and especially her grandchildren. She loved spring and in fact it was her favorite season! Debra loved white lilies as well as roses and all other flowers. She was nurturing, brave, exceptionally smart, caring and loyal, family oriented and very independent and determined — she exceled at all she was a part of. Debra was the epitome of what right looks like in all that she did. Her mantra was always doing the hard right over the easy wrong and she lived her life by this.
    Those left to cherish Debra’s many wonderful memories and continue her legacy include a son, Michael Tanner and his wife Lauren of Kentucky; her mother, Bessie Bristol Vanover of Johnson City; two grandchildren, Alex Tanner and his wife Loretta of Johnson City and Meredith Tanner of Kentucky; two brothers, Larry Vanover and David Vanover, both of Johnson City; and three sisters, Theresa Vanover of Maryland, Sherry Vanover and Donna Stout, both of Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as her best friends, Yvonne Leonard of Gray and Sue Bradbury of Maryland.
