He served in the Army during World War II, where he met the love of his life, Isabel Portrum. He and Isabel enjoyed 62 years of marriage, raising a family and calling Kingsport their home. Together, they were faithful servants of God as members of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.

He was a teacher, coach and administrator for 39 years, first at Lynn View High School then retiring as principal from Sullivan South High School. Many benefited from his devotion to the youth of his community. He was proud to contribute to the success of his students and athletes.

To honor his years of dedication at South High School, the football stadium was named in his honor. Carl was dedicated to his community, serving with many groups and organizations. His role with the TSSAA was his most notable. Carl was first elected to the TSSAA Board of Control in 1965. In 1978 he was elected Chairman, a role he served for 9 years. Carl also served on the Executive Board of the National Federation — a role no other Tennessean had filled. The family will receive friends at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church from 5-7:00 pm Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Dr. Dan Clark will officiate a service immediately following the visitation.
