Funeral services for Mrs. Annie E. Short, 78, who died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Merritt, 401 South Main street, will be held at the Free Baptist church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The last rites will be conducted by the Rev. M. P. Murphy and the Rev. J. C. Howington. Interment will be made in the Highland cemetery.
Mrs. Short had been married three times, first to S. H. Fair, second to W. A. Carter, and third to John H. Short.
She is survived by two brothers, Mack Turner and Saul Turner of Coeburn, Va.
Children surviving are James Fair, Mrs. Maggie Cooke, Bob Fair, S. S. Fair, Mrs. John Merritt, Tom Fair, Jerry Fair, Mrs. R. R. Nave, all of Elizabethton, and Mrs. W. A. Robinson of Huntington, W. Last rites for Samuel L. Turner, age 61, who died at his home, 615 Pine street, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock following a brief illness, were held this afternoon from the Freewill Baptist church at 2:30 with the Rev. Clarence Howington officiating. Interment was in the family cemetery on Siam road.
Mr. Turner had been special merchant policeman for the past few years, and was familiarly known as "Poss." He was a native of Carter county.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Bowers; three sons, Noah, Jack and Howard; three sisters, Mrs. Dave Crumley, Mrs. Will Estep, Mrs. John Deloach; one brother, John Turner; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Edna Fair Pope, 98, Johnson City, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013, in Oakwood, GA. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Mary Jane and Thomas Fair. Mrs. Pope was a lifelong member of Pinecrest Christian Church, Johnson City. She loved children, flowers and animals. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pope was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Pope, who passed away in 1973; and a daughter, Betty Paisley, who passed away in June. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Rick Pope and wife, Susan, of Johnson City; two daughters, Barbara White, of Oakwood, GA, and Patricia Green and husband, Jac,k of Melbourne, FL; a son in-law, Tommy Paisley; 4 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 6 great great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, October 19, 2013, at 12:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, Johnson City. Pastor Nick Bradshaw will officiate. ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Gladys Mae Taylor, 91, formerly of Taylor Town Road, Elizabethton, died on Thursday, December 20, 2007, in Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

She entered Heaven's gates to be with her precious Savior. She was a sweet and loving Mother, Grandmother and friend to all.

Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Mary Belle Deloach Winters; her husband, Elwood Taylor; two sons, Lloyd Ray Taylor, Clifford Taylor; one daughter, Charlotte Morton; one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and W.C. Rasnick, Elizabethton, Frances (Otcie) and Fred Sluder, Elizabethton, Vickie and Wayne Barry, Mountain City, Jenny and Ernest Rosenbaum, Ringold, GA; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas Taylor, Elizabethton, Kenneth and Barbara Taylor, Johnson City; one brother, Lloyd Winters, Elizabethton; seventeen grandchildren and several great and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a special friend, Gerald Clark of Life Care Elizabethton and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mrs. Taylor will be conducted on Saturday, December 22, 2007, at 8:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel with Rev. Jackie Cole, Rev. Steve Burleson and Rev. Mike Robinson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ms. Becky Darnell, soloist. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 2:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 PM Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Mr. Lloyd G. Winters, 89, formerly of 216 South Main Street, Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2009 at Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Winters was the son of the late Monroe and Mary Belle Deloach Winters and was a native of Carter County.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jordan Winters, in 1986; a brother, Robert Winters; two sisters, Gladys Winters Taylor and Hazel Winters.

Mr. Winters was a retired printer from E.T.S.U. and worked at Pressman's House in Rogersville. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in WWII. He was a member and elder of Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elizabethton.

Mr. Winters is survived by two nephews, Steve Winters and his wife, Cindy, Ocean Springs, MS, and Gregory L. Winters and his wife, Sally, Vancouver, WA. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 17, 2009, from 1:00-2:30 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton. Charlie Deloach Jr., age 16, died at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Deloach, 506 Elm Street Friday morning at 1:00 o'clock after an illness of three months.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Deloach; two brothers, Richard and Kenneth; one sister, Janice; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Deloach; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Odom, Hampton; and a number of uncles and aunts.

Kenneth Loyd Deloach, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013, in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles and Bonnie Odom Deloach. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended George Washington University.
He retired from the United States Army after 20 years of service. Following his retirement he was employed for 14 years as a Perquiman agent for the General Services Administration, US Government.
Kenneth and Pat had lived in Woodbridge, Virginia, for 17 years before returning to Elizabethton. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, where he had formerly served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and served in other capacities of the church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Patricia Nave Deloach; One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Mary Jane & Morgan French, Houston, Texas; One Son & Daughter-In-Law: Kenneth Allen and Donna Deloach, Suffolk, Virginia; Two Grandchildren: Edward Clifton French and Meredith Holly French, both of Baton Rouge, La.; His special "Little Friend," Madeline. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Bonnie Odom Deloach. She had lived in Hawkins County for several years. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. In her earlier years, she was employed at E. Watts John’s Insurance Agency. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. McClanahan was preceded in death by Her Husband, Frank McClanahan, March 11, 2002; and Three Brothers: Charles Franklin Deloach, Richard D. Deloach and an Infant brother.

JAMES FAIR, 15, DIES FROM INJURIES HE RECEIVED AT PLAY
James Fair, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fair, East street, succumbed last night at six o'clock in a local hospital from injuries received Sunday afternoon while out playing.
Young Fair, with several playmates, was sliding near the reservoir Sunday afternoon. He struck a stick, which passed through the rectum into the intestines. An emergency operation was performed on Monday.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Freewill Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Clarence Howington officiating. Interment will be in the Hyder Cemetery.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Fair; three brothers, Jess Willard, John Paul, and James Robert Fair; his grandmother, Mrs. M. M. Blackburn, and grandfather, James H. Fair; also five aunts and three uncles.

Dorothy Fair Dykes of Goose Creek, S.C., passed away September 2, 2022, after a brief illness. Dorothy was born January 15, 1937, in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late Coy Fair and Ethel Perry Fair.
Dorothy attended Elizabethton High School (Class of 1955). She was a hair stylist before retiring from Evans Rule Company, Goose Creek, S.C. She was a former member of First Freewill Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn., and later became a member of Harbour Lake Baptist Church, Goose Creek.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 67 years, Gerald Dykes, who retired from the U.S. Navy. After extensive travel in the U.S. and overseas, Dorothy and Gerald settled in Goose Creek, a suburb of Charleston, S.C. Dorothy is also survived by her daughter, Ginger (Jerol) Wright, her son, Gary W. Dykes, granddaughter, Kaylee Wright, grandson, Trey (Rose) Wright, and great-granddaughter, Autumn Wright, all of Goose Creek; one sister, Ann (BIll Jr.) Ingram of Elizabethton; her brothers-in-law, Richard Dykes of Elizabethton and Danny Jenkins of Virginia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The graveside service was held September 6 in Carolina Memorial Park, North Charleston, S.C.

ELIZABETHTON — William Howard “Kilroy” or “Bud” DeLoach, 76, 1119 Bluefield Avenue, Elizabethton, died Friday, September 17, 2004, at his residence.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late John Frank and Ina Fair DeLoach. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 47 years of service. Mr. DeLoach was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and the Darold White Sunday School Class. He was an avid Sportsman.

He was preceded in death by a son: Henry Walter DeLoach, September 29, 1973; and by a brother and a sister.

Survivors include his wife: Marie Holden DeLoach; Two Daughters and Sons-In-Law: JoAnn & Roger Odom & Teresa and R.L. Douglas H. Fair passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness at the age of 81. He was born in Elizabethton to the late Hiram and Alice (Woods) Fair. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Esten Shaffer.

Doug retired from McKee Baking where he was a Little Debbie Snack Cakes distributor for 30 years. After retirement, he worked as a courier for Citizens Bank for 10 years and loved it! Doug was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church and loved going to NASCAR races for many years with friends but more than anything, Doug loved his children and grandchildren.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late James Delmus and Hazel Winters Griffey, Sr. Mr. Griffey was preceded in death by one son, James Monroe Griffey.
He was a retired bus driver with Elizabethton City Schools.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Bateman Griffey, of the home; two daughters: Sylvia and Heather Griffey, both of Elizabethton; one son, Steve Bateman, Elizabethton; one brother, Jerry Griffey, Elizabethton; one grandson, Shane Bateman, Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Kenneth F. Taylor, 71, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Taylor, a son of the late Elwood R. and Gladys Winters Taylor, was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Taylor, who lost his life fighting in the Vietnam War, and a sister, Charlotte Morton.

Mr. Taylor was a 1963 graduate of Elizabethton High School and a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving two tours in Vietnam, receiving two Bronze Stars, the National Service Defense Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Ribbon with two Silver Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He also served three years with the Tennessee National Guard. He worked at Ed Morse Saturn-Cadillac in Tampa, FL, from 1997-2007, then at Bill Gatton Mountain Empire Saturn where he worked in sales until General Motors discontinued the Saturn Brand and he retired. He attended Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church and was also a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center. He also really loved his pets, Sam and Patches, enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and football.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of thirty-three years, Barbara A. Pierce Taylor, of the home; a brother, Conway (Doug) Taylor, Johnson City; four sisters, Vickie Barry and her husband, Wayne, Mountain City; Diane Rasnick, and her husband, W.C., Elizabethton; Frances Sluder and her husband, Fred, Elizabethton; Jenny Rosenbaum, Ringold, GA; and his special friends, Kent and Lisa Gunderson, Nashville, TN. Several nieces and nephews, including a special great-niece, Makenzie Miller, also survive.

A graveside service for Mr. Taylor will be conducted at 10:00 AM, on Friday, March 24, 2017, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Rev. Mark Potter and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Williams, Terry Barnett, Joe Caruso and John Barker. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Vickie Lynn Barry, age 70, went home to be with the Lord on December 28, 2021. Vickie was born on January 2, 1951 to the late Elwood Taylor and Gladys Winters Taylor. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Taylor, Kenneth "Shorty" Taylor and Doug "Conway" Taylor, as well as her sisters Jenny Rosenbaum and Charlotte Morton.
Vickie was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed traveling, camping, arranging flowers, and loved her dog, “Little Bit”. She loved spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great nieces and nephews. She was an active member of First Freewill Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 51 years, Wayne Barry; daughter, Angela Davis and husband Brad; sisters, Diane Rasnick and husband WC, Francis Sluder; grandchildren, Conner and Collin Davis; several nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters in law.

The funeral service for Mrs. Vanover will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25 in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Dr. Joe Sorah officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel prior to the service. Edward Lee Vanover, age 85, of Johnson City, TN made his journey home on Friday, January 22, 2021 at his residence.

Edward was born in Elizabethton, TN to the late William Staton Vanover and Hildred Turner Hubbard.

Edward was the business owner of Vanover Roofing Inc for over 40 years. He was a loving and caring man with many leadership attributes. Edward was very hardworking and would take the hard right over easy wrong in all that he did. Edward loved his home and his family. He was a mischievous jokester and had a wonderful sense of humor. Edward loved to work outdoors, maintain his property and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. He was an avid music lover who loved to sing around his house. Some of his favorite artists included Elvis, Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison. In his earlier days Edward enjoyed racing dirt track and riding his motorcycle. Even in his older days he loved to ride around and see the sights.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elizabeth Ann Turner, who raised him as a son, and William Turner; a son, Eddie Ray Vanover; sister, Margaret Geraldine Vanover; grandchildren, Sunny Conforti and Phillip Conforti. Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 65 plus years, Bessie Vanover; children, Debra Heatherly, Theresa Vanover, Sue Bradbury, David Vanover, Donna Stout Vanover, Larry Vanover, Lisha Vanover, Michael Tanner and wife Lauren Tanner; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren along with special friend, Annette Gibson; a special grandson, Nikolas Vanover and special granddaughter, Samantha Shomaker.

Kay was the caf-e-te-ria man-ager at Hamp-ton Ele-men-tary School and was of the Bap-tist faith. She en-joyed spend-ing time with her grand-chil-dren and "her kids" at Hamp-ton Ele-men-tary, cook-ing and spend-ing her sum-mers by the swim-ming pool.

Terry Dean Scalf, 60, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Friday, August 28, 2015, at the Select Medical Hospital, Bristol, following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Butler and Mary Scalf Jenkins. Mr. Scalf was a brick mason and a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with his musical friends, playing golf and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Hill and Leroy Hill; a sister, Kay Church; and his father-in-law, Ray Wellman. ELIZABETHTON - Phyllis Ann Odom, age 69, of Elizabethton, passed away on April 10, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Christine Scalf Hill and was born in Telford, TN on May 30, 1951. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Norris and her brother, Terry Hill. Phyllis was a retired CNT and enjoyed taking care of others. She loved animals, working in her flowers and going to yard sales.

ELIZABETHTON - Jackie Fair Boone, age 65, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton. Jackie was born in Elizabethton to the late Samuel Hyder Fair, Jr. and Goldie Pearl Bare Fair. In addition to her parents, Jackie was also preceded in death by a sister, Janet Fair Morgan; an infant sister, Barbara Jean Fair; and a sister-in-law, Marianne Fair.
Jackie retired as a law enforcement officer with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department. She loved animals, deeply cared for her family, grandchildren and furbabies. She made friends wherever she went and never knew a stranger. Jackie was the biggest “cut-up” you could ever meet and loved to laugh more than anything. She could not always attend church but her strong faith in God got her through many tough days. No matter what happened to her in life she never lost faith in God and Jesus Christ.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Susan (David) Kilday of Greeneville, TN; her son, Timothy Fair and fiancé, Leanna Booher of Johnson City; her grandchildren, Jamon, Joshua, Bailey, Aala, Foster, Claire and Hope; two brothers, Ronnie (Becky) Fair of Elizabethton and Randy Fair of Jonesborough. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Harry Eugene and Ossie Bare Burrow.
Charlotte worked at Levi-Strauss and retired from Big Lots. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Buddy Deloach; a son, Billy Ray Deloach; a sister, Jayne Nidiffer; a brother, Charles Terry Burrow; and a brother-in-law, J.M. Peters.

Charles (Terry) was born on November 23, 1940 in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Harry E. Burrow and Ossie Bare Burrow. He was preceded in death by Diana Jane Burrow; a niece, Debbie Kay Ensor; a nephew, Bill Deloach; and two brothers-in-law, Buddy Deloach and J.M. Peters.
Terry enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was retired from Inland Container, following 36 years of service, and was an active member of Bible Baptist Church.

Diane "Jayne" Nidiffer, 71, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, December 26, 2016. She passed away at home surrounded by family and her dogs, Niko, Prince and Cookie, after an extended illness.
Born in Elizabethton, she was a daughter of the late Eugene "Gene" and Ossie Bare Burrow. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Buddy Deloach; a nephew, Bill Deloach; and a niece, Debbie Kay Ensor.
Jayne lived her entire life in Elizabethton and was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church. She loved attending church and spending time with her family.
She leaves behind a large family to cherish her memory that includes a daughter, Vicki Gregg; a son, Jonathan Nidiffer and wife Paula; her sisters, Charlotte Deloach, Patsy Peters and husband J.M., and Jenny Hodge and husband Lawrence; her brothers, Terry Burrow and wife Geraldine and Roger Dale Burrow and wife Lisa; her grandchildren, Jeremy Gregg and wife Miranda and Travis Gregg and wife Brittanie; five great-grandchildren; and a special little boy that was the love of her life, Noah Malo.
The family wishes to thank her caregivers, Shelia Lowe, sister Jenny, her hospice nurse, Greg Matney, and Dr. Suzanna Shine. They would also like to thank the staff of Mountain States Hospice for their kind and compassionate care during her illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William Howard Deloach Sr. and Clara Marie Holden Deloach. Evelyn was a housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Valley Forge House of Prayer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Deloach and William Deloach Jr. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Roger Odom Sr.; two daughters, Remetha Dawn Loving and Rebecca Dianne (Melvin) Simmons, all of Elizabethton; a son, Roger D. Debra Vanover Heatherly, 65, of Gray, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, from her residence. Debra was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to Bessie E. Bristol Vanover, of Johnson City, and the late Edward L. Vanover, of Elizabethton. In addition to her father, Debra was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Heatherly.
Debra was a loving mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend who loved her family and the beach. She retired as a stained glass artist and had a great work ethic. Debra was known for going out of her way to make holidays special for her family and especially her grandchildren. She loved spring and in fact it was her favorite season! Debra loved white lilies as well as roses and all other flowers. She was nurturing, brave, exceptionally smart, caring and loyal, family oriented and very independent and determined — she exceled at all she was a part of. Debra was the epitome of what right looks like in all that she did. Her mantra was always doing the hard right over the easy wrong and she lived her life by this.

Mr. Bill Deloach, 55, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was the son of the Charlotte Burrow Deloach of Elizabethton and the late William Buddy Deloach.
Mr. Deloach was employed by Volunteer Floor Covering, Roan Mountain, and was of the Baptist Faith. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren and was interested in old cars.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 10 years, Michelle Malone Deloach, of the home; a daughter, Leah Deloach, Johnson City; a step-daughter, Trista Freeman, of the home; a step-son, Codey Carter, of the home; two grandchildren, Hannah Norris, the light of his life, of the home; Payton Norris, Johnson City; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Rick Walker, Elizabethton; a nephew, Travis Walker, Elizabethton; a special uncle, Roger Burrow, Elizabethton; his special mother-in-law, Evelyn Malone, Bluff City; and several other aunts and uncles.
