In 1915, Moses Dyson and his wife Sarah Williams Dyson donated land to build the Dyson Grove Baptist Church, of which they were founding members. They also built a parsonage for the ministers of the church which was used for many years.

… 83, died in Grace Hospital, Banner Elk, N. C., Jan. 1. He had been in the hospital one month.
Dyson was a native of Johnson County, a coal miner and a farmer. He was a member of Dyson Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Sarah Ann Dyson; one sister, Mrs. Iva Lee Heck of Knoxville; two step-grandchildren, Mrs. Kate Williams Smith and Claude Williams, both of Mountain City, and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Dyson Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Friday with Rev. Ernest Rash and Rev. Keene Roark officiating. Burial was in Dyson Grove Church Cemetery.

William Daniel Morefield, 80, died at his home in Neva today at 6:16 a.m. after a long illness. He was a member of the Christian Church of Neva.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Morefield; two sons, Connie G. Morefield of Elizabethton and Ira Morefield of Lundale, West Virginia; two grandchildren, one great grandchild; one brother, Joe Morefield of Neva and one sister, Mrs. Johnnie Stout of Doeville.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Christian Church in Neva with the Rev. Earl Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Happy Valley Memorial Cemetery.

Flower bearers will be selected from friends at the services.
The body will remain in the chapel of the Tetrick Funeral Home until 12:00 noon Thursday when it will be taken to the church.

ELBERT C. MOREFIELD born April 6, 1873 died Sept. 8, 1943 aged 70 years, 5 months, 2 days.
He was united in marriage to Charlotte S. Forrester Jan. 1, 1894. To this union were born 8 children, 23 girls 6 boys, 3 sons preceded him in death.
Those surviving are his widow, Charlotte Morefield; two daughters Mrs. John Netherly of Neva, Tenn., and Mrs. John Wilson of Waco, W.Va., three sons, Richard and Robert of Waco, W.Va., and Charles of Brownsville, Pa. He united with the Christian Church of Neva several years ago.
Funeral services were conducted at Mountain City Church of Christ at 3 o'clock p.m., Saturday Sept. 12, 1943. Albert Q. Dickson officiated. Mrs. L. F. Yelton and Mr. Dickson sang two hymns. Military services followed at the Mountain City Cemetery with the Spanish American War Veterans in charge. Burial was in charge of North Funeral Home of Elizabethton.
Mr. Morefield was a kind Christian man, a good neighbor, a man that will be missed in his community and to the bereaved family we express our deepest sympathy to you in your loss.

MATILDA CHURCH MOODY
Matilda Church Moody, 55, was born May 11, 1892 and died July 18, 1947. About 35 years ago she married to Clint Moody. To this union were born two children: Mrs. Garrison Garland and Mrs. Ralph Danner.
She is survived by six sisters and one brother: Mrs. Martha Arnold, Mrs. Rebecca Tester, Mrs. Sarah Pierce, Mrs. Alice Whaley, Mrs. Bessie Garland, and Garfield Church. One brother, John Church, preceded her in death. The deceased is also survived by nine grandchildren and a host of friends.
Mrs. Moody was converted and joined the church 33 years ago.
Funeral was held July 21 with Rev. R. L. Painter and Rev. J. O. Jones officiating. Interment was in Shoun Cemetery at Doeville.

M. H. Carder officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. L. Nelson. Burial will be in the Butler Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late William E. and Jennie Morefield Stout. She had lived in LaSiena, California, for 17 years before returning to Tennessee.

She was a member of the Johnson City Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Umbarger, August 10, 1988; and by three brothers: Clyde, Ron and Estill Stout.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: Michael & Barbara Black, Jonesborough; Two Grandsons: Jeremy and Seth Black, both of Phoenix, Arizona; One Sister: Zola Birch, Denton, Texas; Several Nieces & Nephews.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in the Rock Springs Cemetery, Butler, with Pastor Paul Dixon officiating.

Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 12 Noon Wednesday to go to the cemetery.

Oliver Morefield, son of Mr. Joe Morefield, Neva, was killed in an automobile wreck, which occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, March 24, three miles out of Mountain City near Shouns.

OLIVER MOREFIELD, 25, World War II veteran of Neva, who died as a result of a traffic accident near here on Wednesday night, will be buried at 10 a.m. Saturday at Johnson Church at Neva. Rev. Earl Campbell of Butler and Rev. Joe Ponder of Mountain City will officiate. Burial will be in the Stout Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded him at the grave.
Survivors include his father, Joe Morefield, Neva; sisters, Mrs. Ethel Guinn, Neva; two brothers, Robert of McDowell, W. Va. and Elbert of Shouns. His mother was the late Pearl Morefield.
Morefield served in the Pacific theatre during the war. He was discharged in 1945, after which he reenlisted and served 18 months in the army.

Neva Man Killed In Auto-Truck Collision
MOUNTAIN CITY, Thurs. March 25 – Oliver Moorefield of Neva, Tenn. was killed here last night involving a truck and a passenger car, and Coolidge Arnold, also of Neva is in serious condition in Mountain Home Hospital at Johnson City.
A 1941 (Plymouth) sedan, driven by Arnold and carrying three other passengers, was in collision with a coal truck from St. Paul, Va., driven by Henry Lowe, who was uninjured. The accident occurred about 8 p.m. three miles from Mountain City on the North Carolina highway, according to the sheriff of Johnson County.

Gerry was a homemaker and a member of Stout Hill Church of Christ. She loved to cook, bake and decorate cakes, gardening and spending time with her family.

Mr. Estep was a former employee of Tri-State Container. He had lived in Detroit, Mich., for a number of years and retired from West-Vaco Container in Detroit. He returned to Elizabethton four months ago. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Anna Estep, Elizabethton; two daughters, Sandra Bates and Peggy Comacho, both of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers, Raymond Estep, Elizabethton, and Gurney Estep, Tipton, Mich.; and two sisters, Pat Patterson and Betty Jo Ketchem, both of Elizabethton. Ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Melba Estep Julian, age 80, of Hampton suddenly went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was a native of Avery County, NC, but made her home in Carter County. Mrs. Julian was the daughter of the late Conley Ray and Beulah McGuire Estep. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Presnell, her brothers, Bud Estep and Conley Ray Jr .Estep, and her step-mother, Bertie Estep.

Survivors include her husband, Norman M. Julian; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Dan Akers and Norma Sue and Melvin Gwyn; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Teresa Julian, all of Hampton; two granddaughters, Amanda Giles and her husband, Jesse K. of Knoxville; Autumn Julian of Hampton; a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Clara Giles, Knoxville; a sister and brother-in-law, Shelby Jean and Robert Oaks; Newland; best friend, Hazel Davis and a special cousin, Bernice Mitchell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Julian was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. She enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. Mrs. Julian was also active in the church and enjoyed helping with the children's programs. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

The funeral service for Mrs. Julian will be conducted on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun officiating. Music will be under the direction of Anna Hurley and Greg Odom. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Robert Oaks, Bobby Silver, Melvin Gwyn, Dan Akers, Jesse K, Giles, Greg Giles and Philip Giles. Honorary pallbearers will be Dee Mitchell, Tony Slagle, Jordan Silver, Howard Julian and Richard Birchfield.

Shelby Jean Oaks, age 78, passed away Monday, January 15, at Franklin Woods hospital.

She was born on August 18, 1939, in Avery County, North Carolina to Conley and Beulah McGuire Estep.

Shelby lived most of her life in Avery County and was a beloved friend to all being fortunate enough to have known her. She was an outstanding basketball player while attending Cranberry High School in the late 1950's, and married her grade school sweetheart, Charlie Robert Oaks in 1957.

Shelby was brought up in a time when folks worked hard, and carried that same ethic throughout her lifetime, helping raise her niece and care for her father after her mother died when she was just 7 years old. She belonged to the Newland First Baptist Church for many years before transferring her membership to Crossnore Baptist Church. She was always ready to aid friend and stranger alike.

She worked for GF Co. and Grandfather Golf and Country Club for 47 years in several management positions, and was well known for her beautiful flower and landscape designs throughout the resort. Shelby was a truly rare individual, and will be deeply missed.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, are a brother, Landon Lee "Bud" Estep, sisters, Hazel Estep Presnell, Melba Estep Julian, and her step-mother Bertie Pitts Estep.

Shelby is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charlie Robert, who will not be attending the services due to extenuating health issues; one daughter: Deborah Oaks Silver; son-in-law: Bobby Silver; granddaughter: Sommer Trivette; grandson: Jordan Silver; great granddaughter: Tatum Cooke, brother-in-law: Norman Julian; sister-in-law: Mary Catherine Estep, Marilyn Oaks Hughes, Patty Oaks Oxendine; niece: Betty Estep and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins, all loving her dearly. Her co-workers Paulette Hartley and Kathy Harris held a special place in her heart, and will not be forgotten by the family.

Funeral services for Shelby Jean Oaks will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Jesse Giles officiating. Interment will follow in the Guinn Cemetery.

Betty Jean Estep, age 73, of Elk Park, NC passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018, at her residence.

She was born on March 4, 1945, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Conley Estep and the late Hazel Estep.

Betty Jean worked for many years at IRC, Shadowline and Grandfather Golf and Country Club. She was a very special mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who cared for others more than herself.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two Aunts: Shelby Jean Oaks, Melba Julian; Four half Brothers: Bill Mottern, Freddy Mottern, Kenny Presnell, Benny Presnell; Step Mother: Bertie Estep.

Betty Jean leaves behind to cherish her memory her Husband of 55 years, Pat Estep of Beech Mountain, NC; Son: Daryl Estep of Beech Mountain, NC; Daughter: Diane Estep of Mountain City, Tenn., Son: Michael (Sherry) Estep of Fall Creek, NC; Daughter: Michele (Derick) Turbyfill of Sugar Grove, NC; Daughter: Rebecca Pukansky of Vilas, NC; Brother: Keith Presnell of Sugar Grove, NC; Brother: Bobby (Patti) Presnell of Vilas, NC; 13 grandchildren. five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2018. Graveside services will follow on Monday morning at 11 a.m. in the Stines Cemetery on Buckeye Road on Old Beech Mountain.

Mrs. Martha Louise Day McQueen, age 90, passed away, Monday, June 18, 2012, at NHC Health Care Center of Johnson City after an extended illness.

Mrs. McQueen was born in Johnson County and lived in Butler before moving to Limestone in 1947. She was a daughter of the late William David & Mae Dugger Day. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McQueen was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Kyle McQueen; three brothers, Tead Day, John Day and Ray Day; and one sister, Beulah Deloach.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. McQueen graduated from Johnson County High School, where she was a member of the Girls Basketball Team.

Mrs. McQueen was a homemaker, farmer and co-owner of Queendale Farm. She enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening and raising chickens.

Survivors include her children, David Cyrus "D.C." McQueen and wife, Joan, and Patsy McQueen Greene, all of Limestone; grandchildren, Debbie Abbott and Lance, of Johnson City, Becky Zinnianti and Chet, Jonesborough, and Daniel Greene, Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Beth Zinnianti, Lisa Greene, Adrianne and Brandon Abbott; sister, Kate Wilson, Mountain City; brother, Clyde Day, Marion, NC; special niece, Jean Bates, Knoxville; niece and special caregiver, Georgia Freeman; and several nephews and nieces.

The family would like to send special thanks to NHC Health Care of Johnson City and Caris Hospice.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Craig Ponder and Rev. Charles Morgan officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday prior to the service.

Interment services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
