Alvin was born to John Nave Hardin (b. 1808) and Mary Fletcher (b. 1811). He married Margaret Evaline Lewis 28 Feb 1867 at Carter, TN. They had nine children. After Evelyn's death, Alvin married Sarah Richardson. Alvin's grandson Guy Hardin said, "If it hadn't been for Sarah, the family wouldn't have survived. Sarah married Alvin, with all those kids, and raised them as her own. She deserves some honorable recognition." Alvin is buried by his first wife, Eveline Hardin, in the Forbes Cemetery. But, Sarah's burial place is unknown. Her death record says she is buried at the "Harly" cemetery. It has been guessed that she is buried in the Hurley Cemetery in Carter TN where other Richardsons are buried. Any assistance with this mystery would be appreciated. Alvin raised his family in the head of Liberty Hollow. The property is still called the Alvin Lot at the foot of Iron Mountain to this day by the coon hunters. Alvin's middle name is almost certainly Powell, as two nephews are known to be named Alvin Powell Hardin. following an extended illness.
Mr. Hardin was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Alvin
P. and Bessie Bowers Hardin. He was also preceded in death by three brothers,
Alfred Johnny Hardin, Greene E. Hardin and Leonard Hardin, and a sister,
Naomi Hardin.
Mr. Hardin was the Oldest Member of Blue Springs Christian Church. He
retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 32 years of service.
He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM and was a 32nd Degree
Mason for 52 years.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Bowers Hardin, of the home; a son and
daughter-in-law, Grant W. and Phyllis Hardin, Hampton; a grandson and
granddaughter-in-law, Jamey and Renee Hardin, Elizabethton; two
granddaughters, Cindy Lenore Canter and Angela Hardin Shingleton, both of
Elizabethton; a step-grandson, Gregory Lynn McKinney, Hampton; a step-
granddaughter, Suzanne McKinney, Kingsport; three great-grandsons, Zachary
Hardin, Elijah Shingleton and Dustin Canter, all of Elizabethton; a great-
granddaughter, Keaton Shingleton, Elizabethton; a step-great-granddaughter,
Madison Jane McKinney, Kingsport; a sister, Myrtle Buckles, Elizabethton;
two brothers and a sister-in-law, Garnie and Beulah Hardin, Hampton, and

HARDIN -- Funeral services for Morrell Eston Hardin, 94, formerly of
Bill Nave Loop, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, May 16, 2002, will
be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 19, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick
Funeral Home with Mr. Richard Thomason and Mr. Don Marshall, ministers,
officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ray Estep and Russell
Potter. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m.
Monday, May 20, at Grover Bowers Cemetery, Blue Springs Community. Active
pallbearers will be Sheriff John Henson, the Carter County Sheriffs'

Garnie M. Hardin, 97, Elizabethton passed away Monday November 15, 2010 in the Pine Ridge Care Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Alvin and Bessie Bowers Hardin. He was a retired employee of the Bemberg Corporation. Mr. Hardin was a paper carrier for the Johnson City Press for 17 years. He loved to work on lawn mowers , working in his garden and antique cars. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Beulah Bowers Hardin, July 8, 2006 and three brothers: Eston, Greene and Alfred Hardin. He was a member of the Willow Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include Two Sons: Grady M. Hardin and wife Phyllis, Bean Station, Tenn., and Harley J. Hardin, Newton, North Carolina. Two Daughters: Mary Katherine Mueller and husband Richard, Aiken, South Carolina and Nora J. Fritts and husband Mitchell, Elizabethton. 6 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Carr officiating. Interment will follow in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery. Grant C. Hardin, 99, of Elizabethton, formerly of 827 Blue Springs Road, Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center. Grant was born on July 7, 1917 and was a son of the late Alvin P. Hardin and Bessie C. Bowers Hardin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Pauline Oliver Hardin, on December 19, 2001, and four brothers, Garnie Hardin, Eston Hardin, Alf Hardin and Greene Hardin.
Grant was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He served his country in Germany for three years. When he returned home he went to work at the Bemberg Corporation, which ironically was a German Rayon Manufacturer and one of the largest employers ever in Carter County. He retired from Bemberg as a machine operator. One of his hobbies was Bingo, which he attended every week in his sport coat and dress hat. He was also a member of the Masons and the Shriners. He was a very humble man who didn't like to say a lot about himself, but once stated "although I was drafted into the Army, I served my country with pride." He was the oldest member of Blue Springs Christian Church.
Those left to cherish his memory include one sister, Myrtle Buckles, of Elizabethton, and many nieces and nephews.
A service to honor the life of Mr. Grant C. Hardin will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, September 16, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Andrew Church providing a eulogy and Mr. Richard Thomason providing a prayer. Music will be under the direction of Donna Ellis. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the residence of his brother-in-law, Gayle Oliver, at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 17, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Lindsay Rash, Rick Richardson, Noel Church, Sam Ellis, Greg Heaton and Evan Ellis. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Blue Springs Christian Church.

ELIZABETHTON — Gilbert Gibson Hardin, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2012, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late John R. & Hettie Frazier Hardin. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Japanese Occupation Force. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation.

Mr. Hardin was the last member of the Hardin Brothers Quartet. The Quartet has sung for many funeral services and also church services in East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina, West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky since they began singing in the early 1940s .

Mr. Hardin was a member of the New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church and was a former Member, Choir Director and Trustee of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sibilia Garland Hardin; a daughter: Thelma Dale Hardin; and Six brothers: Albert, Clyde, Auda, Wesley, Guy & Hobart Hardin.

Survivors include a son: Vernon Hardin; and many nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2012, in the New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Rev. Bill Greer officiating. The eulogy will be given by Rev. Randy Johnson.

Interment will follow in the Blevins Cemetery with the Rev. Clate Briggs officiating. Music will be provided by the New Liberty Choirs, New Liberty Quartet and friends. Mrs. Leila B. McGuire, 96, of Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord, on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Pine Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Elizabethton following an extended illness. She was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Michael R. and Lucy Bartee Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, Eustace C. McGuire on February 6, 1990; six sisters, Mabel Forbes, Golda Grindstaff, Mary Hardin, Bessie Blevins, Ina Hardin and Ida Hardin; three brothers, Alex Hardin, Erve Hardin, and Homer Hardin; and a son-in-law, Glen Whaley.

She was a member of Roan Street Church of God, Elizabethton, and was a former charter member of Unaka Baptist Church, Elizabethton, TN. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend who was affectionately called "Mother" by most of her family and friends. Her love, her humor, and her sparkling personality will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include three daughters, Helen Sue Ward O'Bannon and husband, Barrie, of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Barbara Ann Ward Herron and husband, Barry, of Dorothy, West Virginia; Kathy E. Williams and companion, Kenneth Fletcher, both of Elizabethton; one son, Raymond G. Ward, of Elizabethton; eleven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Grace Herman, of Alabama; one brother-in-law, Abraham Ward, of Mississippi. Also surviving are special friends, Wesley and Rita Holtsclaw; Wayne and Holly Koonz; Billy and Kathy Cole.

Mr. Oliver was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and a retired employee of Mapes Piano String Company.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Juanita Oliver, Elizabethton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Annie and Preston Williams, Elizabethton, and Pearl Grindstaff, Valdese, N.C.; and a special friend, Pansy Hart, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Roger Rickey Markland of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his heavenly Father on September 14, 2022.
Roger had a love for life and the outdoors. He never met a stranger; but most of all, he loved the Lord. I know Heaven has gained an angel. Though with tears in my eyes, I let you go because the I know the loss is mine, but Heaven’s gain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lundy and Evadean Dugger Markland; two sisters, Gearlean Campbell and Roma Markland; and one brother, Norman Markland.

CONOVER, N.C. — Harley J. Hardin, 80, of Conover, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at his home. Harley was born October 11, 1938 in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Garnie and Beulah Bowers Hardin.

Erma Myers - JOHNSON CITY
Erma Jean Hardin Myers, age 69, Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 29, 2008, from Christian Care Center of Johnson City following a brief illness.

She was a Carter County native and a daughter of the late Cecil J. and Ruby Grindstaff Hardin. Mrs. Myers was a graduate of Unaka High School class of 1955 and always enjoyed working on the class reunion committee.

Professionally, she was the financial secretary of First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, for thirty-two years. She truly learned to love God's Presbyterian children and enjoyed her years there.

Mrs. Myers became a Christian at an early age, being led to the Lord by the late dear one, Gertrude Hale. She was, at one time, a member of Willow Springs and Caldwell Springs Baptist Churches on Stony Creek. There she was taught by scripture and example.

After her marriage to Dr. George G. Myers (former ETSU professor), in May of 1955, she joined the Dungan Chapel Baptist Church with him and began an active service of Teaching and working in many areas of the Church's program. For twenty-five years, she worked tirelessly at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in West Carter County.

For the last thirteen years, Mrs. Myers had been a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton, where she continued to be an innovative teacher, employing flip charts and many objects to illustrate a Sunday School lesson. She became known as the "Bag Lady" because there was always an object in her bag to make a point in a lesson.

Mrs. Myers would like to be remembered as a child of God, a servant and teacher in His church, a caring friend, mother and wife.

Mrs. Myers is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Dr. George G. Myers, of the home; and she was the proud mother of three sons and daughters-in-law: Glenn Stanley and Vicki Myers, Bristol, TN, Lynn Cecil and Rita Myers, Dr. James and Donna Myers, all of Johnson City. The funeral service for Mrs. Myers will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the First Baptist Church, Elizabethton, with Dr. Angus R. Shaw and Dr. Jim Royston officiating. Music will be under the direction of Julie Cardwell and Tim Smith. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to the service.

John H. Hardin, 80, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 9, 2022, from Holston Valley Medical Center. John was born in Carter County to the late Cecil H. Hardin and Ruby A. Grindstaff Hardin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Erma J. Myers and Lois Treadway.
John H. Hardin was a family man who always placed God and his family first. He was involved in many things, but he always found the time for God and family. He was a member of Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for close to 30 years and also served as a trustee.
John retired from Unaka High School following 33 years teaching agriculture and where he had the only butchering class in Tennessee. He also taught agriculture at Elizabethton High School for four years. His knowledge of agriculture led him to be President of the TN National Vocational Agricultural Association as well as Chairman of the Soil Conservation Service of Elizabethton for many years. John has always loved the land and had a genuine dedication to farming. He was raised in Carter County and farmed here his entire life. His father and grandfather were farmers before him. When he was six years old, his father gave him a calf and told him that he was responsible for it. All through high school, even though he played football, he still had to take care of the dairy cows. While he was in college, he got up each morning at 4:30 a.m. to milk 48 cows before going to school. John has shared his love of the land by teaching his children to love the land that God gave them.
John H. Hardin is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Nyoka Hardin; his sons, John Claude Hardin (Jennifer) of Elizabethton and Jeremy L. Hardin (Megan) of Elizabethton; his daughters, Vikki Thomas (Richard) of Elizabethton and Heather Leonard (Dennis) of Bristol, Va.; his grandchildren, Chandler Thomas, Kyndal Thomas, Mason Richardson, Ava Leonard, Hannah Taylor, John Hardin and Gracie Hardin; and his sister-in-law, Jonnie Wilson of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of John H. Hardin will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Linda Sue Kyte, age 75, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 8, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family. Linda was born in Elizabethton to the late Carl Lester Hardin, Sr. and Nora Beatrice Wilson Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Richard Kyte, Sr.

Linda was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She has worked as a dietician. She attended Sims Hill Christian Church. Linda loved to be outside working in her garden and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to travel, camp, and her beloved dogs, Bandit, Fifi and Zach. She simply enjoyed life!

Those left to cherish her memories include two sons, Norman Richard Kyte, Jr. and wife Patricia Gail, of Elizabethton, and Brian Duane Kyte and wife Whitney Michelle, of Knoxville; one daughter, Kathy Kyte, of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Kevin Lynn Kyte, Casey Nicole Kyte Saults, Blaklyn DeLain Kyte, Zaiden Murray Kyte, and Beckett Raines Kyte; one great granddaughter, Calista Jewel Saults; one brother, Carl Lester Hardin, Jr., Hampton; two sisters, Sherry Fortner, of Elizabethton and Charlotte Williams, of Erwin; and an uncle, Pete Wilson, of Elizabethton. JOHNSON CITY — William Paul "Bill" Grindstaff, 88, of Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at his home.

He was a native of Washington County, son of the late Serena Bell Grindstaff Grindstaff. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam having proudly served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force retiring in 1969. He attended Keystone Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Margie Ledwell Grindstaff of the home; children, Kenneth Hodge, Barbara Furchess, Sharon Boles, Cindy Abel, and Janice Swanner; thirteen grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren; one great great grandson; a special grandson, Chad Abel; a special niece, Norma Scott.

ELIZABETHTON — Ms. Mamie Garland Celia, age 93, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late M.D. and Vada Grindstaff Garland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and eight brothers.

Ms. Celia was a homemaker and a member of Unaka Baptist Church

Andrew J. "Andy" Grindstaff, 74, of Elizabethton, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Andy was a native of Butler, Tennessee, and had lived most of his life in Elizabethton. He was the son of the late Jesse and Maude Matheson Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leroy Grindstaff, Bobby Grindstaff and Fred Grindstaff; three sisters, Helen Deloach, Earline Greene and Lily Jones; a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Paul Hampton; brothers-in-law, Bill Ward and Conley Bullock; and father and mother-in-law, John and Alice Hodge. Mr. Grindstaff was a veteran of the United States Army from 1963-1965, serving nineteen months in Alaska. He was a retired millwright of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church and had attended Valley Forge Christian Church for many years. He was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge #750, York Rite, Elizabethton Shrine Club and a faithful Charter Member of Jericho Shrine, and a member of Royal Jester Court #183, a 10th Degree Master Mason and very faithful member of the Jericho Paper Drive. Survivors include his wife, Geraldean Hodge Grindstaff; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Andrew and Heather Grindstaff; sisters-in-law, Brenda Grindstaff, Margaret Grindstaff, Lois Ward, Glenna Bullock, Carol and "Blue" Treadway and Johnnie and Raymond Holtsclaw; and a close friend, Norma Williams. Lawrence Hardin, 94 passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on December 1, 2022. Born December 28,1927. Lawrence was the son of Clyde and Goldie Shankle Hardin and was born in Inman, VA and moved to Carter County as a young boy. He was a 1946 graduate of Unaka High School, where he was a basketball and baseball standout. Lawrence honorably served his country during World War II in the United States Army where he was stationed in Japan. He dutifully worked at North American Rayon Corporation for 40 years. Mr. Hardin was a charter member of Carter Christian Church in the Stoney Creek Community for 87 years, faithfully serving the church he loved as both a deacon and elder.

Lawrence was cherished by his family as a loving father and Papaw. He enjoyed being outside working in his yard and beautiful garden and reading and studying the Bible. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching the TN VOLS play football and basketball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Ella Mae Hardin who passed away in 2015 and three brothers, Frankie, Johnny, and Howard Hardin.

Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Judy and Larry Estep, Elizabethton and a son and daughter in law, Philip and Karla Hardin, Fairhope, AL. Four granddaughters, Beth Bare and husband Daniel, Hollie Shah and husband Sam, Audrey Hardin, and Abigail Hardin; four great grandchildren, Kendall and Kacie Bare and Carson and Ava Shah; special sister-in-law Carol Myers.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he received a Purple Heart and other service related metals. He was an employee of American Bemberg Corporation and North American Rayon Corporation for 25 years. He was also an Electrician & Pipe Fitter and a millwright at various construction companies. Don was also a self-employed auto mechanic. He was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an Infant son: Terry Hardin, three brothers: Charles, Danny Ray and Olan "Pie" Hardin and a sister: Alma "Bo" Williams.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years: Carol Groce Hardin. His Children: Randy Hardin & wife Darlene, Tim Hardin & wife Doris and Wendy Watson. ELIZABETHTON - Olan Eugene "Pie" Hardin, 74, Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a battle with Amyloidosis.

Born April 27, 1944 in Elizabethton to the late Auda & Viola Peters Hardin. He was a 1962 graduate of Unaka High School. Pie was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for several years and retired from Texas Instruments. He was a member of the Good Neighbor Quartet, The Thursday Night Boys and second generation Hardin Brothers Quartet.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Alma "Bo" Williams and two brothers, Charles & Dana Ray Hardin. He was an avid Tennessee Vol Fan.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years who cared for him Karen Taylor Hardin. One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Audra Brooke & Daryl Shanks, two sons & daughters-in-law: Wade & Sarah Hardin and Shane & Laura Hardin and the light of his life his grandchildren: Taylor Shanks, Kassidy Hall and Cooper Shanks. Samuel Leon "Buddy" Hardin, age 77, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.
A lifelong native of Carter County, he was born in Elizabethton, TN, to the late Hobert and Sally (Alford) Hardin.
Sam attended Unaka High School and graduated from East Tennessee State University and The School of Banking of the South (Louisiana State University). He retired from Walters State Community College, Morristown, TN, where he was a supporter of the Walters State Senators.
Sam was an avid golfer and life-long Tennessee Volunteer fan, but above all he loved spending time with his family and supporting the athletic events of his grandchildren. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend loved dearly by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce "Peggy" (Holly) Hardin; and stepmother, Juanita (Cole) Hardin.

ELIZABETHTON - Dr. Harold Stout, 84, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday August 30, 2017.

Coach Stout was born in Elizabethton to the late John and Lela Stout. He graduated from Elizabethton High School and had a successful college baseball and basketball career at East Tennessee State University. He completed his Masters in Education from the University of Tennessee in 1959 and his Doctorate in Education from ETSU in 1974. Coach Stout was the head baseball coach at Milligan College for 24 years and at ETSU for 7 years. He had an outstanding and highly accomplished coaching career. Coach Stout made a significant impact on many young men throughout the years by teaching them the value of faith, hard work, sportsmanship and pride.

Coach Stout was also an educator and taught at the College and High School level for over 40 years.

He was also a great father, husband and friend to many people in the East Tennessee community. He loved his family, his church, the game of baseball and his roses. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife Bonnie and her daughters Paulette, Dena and Donna, son Tony and his wife Lisa and daughters Kendall and Kailee, daughter Anlyn Hughes and her husband John and daughter Stephanie Sibley. He is also survived by his sister Geraldine Kindelon and her sons Al and Nathan Wallace and nieces Nancy Turley and Teri Neil.

Preceded in death by brothers Willard and John Stout and wife Millicent Combs Stout.

Funeral services will be held at Grace Baptist Church in Elizabethton, TN on Sunday September 3rd at 2:00 pm. Pastor Travis Tyler officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 12 p.m. to time of service. The party in heaven got a lot more lively when Geraldine Stout Wallace Kindelon passed through the pearly gates on February 2, 2022, after a brief illness. Geri was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to John and Lela Stout on August 9, 1941. She moved with her husband to East Cobb in 1972 and lovingly raised two sons, Alton Wallace Jr (Stacie) and Nathan Wallace (Carolyn). As a single mother working her way up from teller to loan officer at C&S Bank and ultimately retiring from Bank of America, Geri never missed an opportunity to cheer her boys on. She enjoyed a loving, two decades long second marriage to Ellis Kindelon, a dashing widower from Southern California, who was a wonderful role model for her sons.
Geri filled a room with her larger-than-life personality, effervescence, quick wit, and charm. A Southern Belle through and through, she could weave a story like no other, offer a helping hand to total strangers and whip up a meal that you’d never forget. Generous to a fault, Geri selflessly turned the focus on others rather than herself and always had a positive outlook that remained intact until the end. Family gatherings were her joy and Christmas was at the top of her list. She spared no expense to spoil her family and not only gave but received what appeared to be an unending stream of gifts from those she touched and friends she gathered from all areas of her life.
Geri leaves behind an adoring plethora of friends and family including her children and grandchildren, Samantha, Zachary, Miles and Cleo Wallace.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three older brothers, Willard, John Jr. and Harold Stout.

Billy Edward Cole, 79, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles L. & Ethel Shoun Cole and preceded in death by his brother: Hursel Cole. Billy was a graduate of Unaka class of 1958 and a graduate of East Tennessee State College with a degree in Engineering. He was a retired employee of General Shale as Project Engineer. After his retirement he especially enjoyed working on his farm with his cattle.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years: Linda Pleasant Cole. Three Daughters: Shelby Cole Rasnick & husband, Doug, Barbara Curtis & husband Scott and Christy Simerly and friend Rick Barker. One Granddaughter: Hannah Simerly Marshall & husband Caleb. Also very special nieces: Ann Caskey & husband Mick, Lois Propst & husband Kenneth and Charlene Rinehardt & husband Greg and three great nieces, Betsy, Jenna & Amy.

ELIZABETHTON - Elma “Dean” Forbes, age 77, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2022 at Hermitage Health Care of Elizabethton. Dean was born in Carter County, Tennessee on January 21, 1945 to the late John Robert Forbes and Annis Dove (Bea) Cable Forbes. In addition to her parents, Dean was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Forbes Frazier.

Dean was a graduate of Unaka High School and spent her career doing bookkeeping and other office work at Click Construction and Middleton Management. She was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church and enjoyed watching UT Football, genealogy, crocheting and gardening.

ELIZABETHTON - Kenneth Colbaugh, 80, Elizabethton passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Arthur & Nannie Pearl Forbes Colbaugh. He was retired from North American Rayon Corporation. Kenneth served in the United States Army having served in Korea. He was a member and Deacon of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He was very proud of being a Christian and an US Army Veteran. This was evidenced on his 80th birthday cake which depicted an American & Christian flag, the two things in his life he cherished. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Virginia "Tootsie" Peters and Louella Colbaugh and a brother: Powell Colbaugh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years: Carolyn White Colbaugh, his daughter: Susan Marie Colbaugh. Two Sisters: Ruby "Peanut" (Frosty) Bowers and Linda Simerly. Virginia was a member of New Freedom Fellowship. Her Hobbies were, canning, sewing, gardening, cooking and going camping. Wanda Hildred "Bee" Grindstaff Peters, 95, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
She was born in Carter County on April 11, 1922 to the late Elbert C. and Golda Hardin Grindstaff. She lived most of her life in Carter County and attended Unaka High School.
Wanda was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton and also attended Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church and Milligan Free Will Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She loved to read her Bible and had read it through many, many times.
Wanda and her husband operated a local grocery store in the Hunter Community of Stoney Creek for several years. Her hobbies included cross-stitching, embroidering, quilting and playing the piano.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray D. Peters, in 1986; a brother, Sherman A. Grindstaff; two sisters, Rena Vaught and Norma Carrier; three infant sisters; and a son-in-law, Rob Sanders.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Sanders and Gail Bishop and husband Earl; three grandsons, Ed Keesee, Edward Elliott and Benjamin Bishop; two granddaughters, Beth Bennett and husband Billy, and Kimberly Street and husband Brad; one brother, Anthony Grindstaff and wife Betty; one sister, Rita "Mattie" Payne and husband Nat; six great-grandchildren, Casey Street, Savannah Golson, Sarah Elliott, Emma Elliott, Katie Keesee and Luke Keesee; one great-great-granddaughter, River Golson; two step-granddaughters, Robin Lyons and Marnie Childress; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norma M. Carrier, age 91, celebrated a glorious union with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, December 13, 2014, after a brief illness, at her residence in Kingsport.
Norma was born in Carter County, TN, on November 12, 1923, to the late Elbert C. and Golda Hardin Grindstaff. She lived most of her life in Carter County, where she grew up, attended Unaka High School, and married and raised her family. She moved to Kingsport, TN, in 2010.
She attended Stoney Creek Baptist Church during her younger years. She became a member of Watauga Valley Freewill Baptist Church after her marriage in 1940. She served her church well by singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School classes and home Bible studies. She was an exceptional student of the Bible and a gifted teacher of the Word of God.
She was employed at Raytheon, Bristol, for several years. She was a talented seamstress and was also an excellent cook.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Gray M. Carrier, on September 28, 2012; a daughter, Gwen Widmyer; a brother, Sherman A. Grindstaff; a sister, Rena Vaught; three infant sisters; and a son-in-law, Bill Hammond.
Survivors include one daughter, Janice Hammond; two grandsons, Brad Hammond and wife, Gloria, and Bart Hammond and wife, Julianne; two granddaughters, Amber Garland and husband, James, and Ginger Shifflett and husband, Paul; two sisters, Wanda Peters, and Mattie Payne and husband, Nat; one brother, Anthony Grindstaff and wife, Betty; ten great-grandchildren, and a son-in-law, Warren Widmyer. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Norma M. Carrier will be conducted at 12 Noon on Wednesday, December 17th, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Reverend Bill Greer, Reverend Calvin Jett and Dr. James Richardson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joy Dean Babb, Diana Blevins, Cathy Timbs and Leatha Grindstaff, organist.
The family will receive friends in the chapel from 11:00 AM-12 Noon on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service.

ELIZABETHTON - Rita Grindstaff "Mattie" Payne, 87, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023 in the Hermitage Health Center. She was born February 11, 1936, in Carter County to the late Elbert Clinton and Golda Mae Hardin Grindstaff. Mattie was a 1954 Graduate of Unaka High School. She was a homemaker. She was an extremely good Pianist and Organist, having played in church for several years. She was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband: Nathaniel C. Payne; one brother and sister-in-law: Henry Anthony & Betty Grindstaff of Bristol, Tenn; also, several special nieces and nephews.

Mattie will be buried in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Everything will be private.

LIMESTONE - Shentonta Faye Hardin, 75, Limestone passed away Thursday, May 26, 2022. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Erving Hardin & Juliette Pierce Hardin. She was a 1965 graduate of Unaka High School and East Tennessee State University. Shentonta was a retired Social Worker. She loved spending time with her family, going shopping and reading her Bible. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons: Michael Todd Thomas and Clifton Gale “Pooh” Thomas and two grandsons: Kendell Aaron Hartman and Clifton George Thomas.

She was born November 25, 1941 in Elizabethton to the late Clark & Bessie Pearl Hardin Blevins. She was a homemaker. She married the love of life Teddy B. Vines on April 26, 1966 just days shy of 55 wonderful years. She loved to read her Bible, loved to shop. She attended Sims Hill Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughters: Lisa Vines Oliver and Tabitha Vines, her Siblings: Earl Blevins, Ken Blevins, Sherly Blevins Kyte and Geraldine Blevins Peters.

Sonja D. Whaley, age 79, of Central Community, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018, at Indian Path Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Whaley was born in Elizabethton and was a daughter of the late Eustace C. and Leila Bell Hardin McGuire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Whaley.

Mrs. Whaley was a member of the Roan Street Church of God. She loved to read her Bible and do crossword puzzles. She also loved taking care of her family and enjoyed watching westerns and taking care of her dog, Rachael.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Fred "Sonny" Shoun, 78, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness. He was born in Vivian, West Virginia, the son of the late Fred H. and Virginia Cannaday Shoun, and had lived most of his life in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Mr. Shoun was a 1955 graduate of Unaka High School, a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of American Legion Post # 49. He also held an associate degree in accounting and was retired from Raytheon Corporation where he worked for thirty-eight years. He loved to play music, he was a Christian, an ordained deacon and was a Sunday School teacher. He was also a founding member of the Carter County Humane Society. Those left to cherish his memory include, his wife of fifty-five years, Barbara Moody Shoun, of the home; a daughter, Ann Byrd and her husband, J.D. Murfreesboro, TN; a son, Gene Shoun and his wife, Katherine, Charlotte, NC; four granddaughters, Whitney Byrd, Reno, NV; Jessica Byrd, Bowling Green, KY; Sgt. Amanda White, (USAF), Langley Air Force Base, VA; Katie Cingel, Danville, VA; a sister, Virginia Coleman, and her husband, Richard, Elizabethton; special friends, Brenda and Darrell Cannon, Elizabethton; Jason and Sara Cox, Elizabethton; his beloved dog, Lulu and Lulu's two doggie friends, Sidney and Sambo. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A service to honor the life of Mr. Shoun will be conducted on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, with Rev. Ray Colbaugh officiating. Music will be under the direction of his son, Gene Shoun and his granddaughter, Katie Cingel. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service, or at the home at other times.The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 in the Garden of Freedom of Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Lynn Peters, Darrell Cannon, Jeff Oliver, Bill Crow, Donnie Dykes and Henry Shoun. Honorary pallbearers will be Curtis Huskins, Glen Shoun, Rich Coleman, Bob Cable, Leonard Febuary, Dr. Paul Knapp, Alan Self and Dr. Don Marshall. Jerry was the son of Fred Hatfield Shoun and Virginia Cannaday Shoun. Jerry died as the result of a motorcycle accident, near Redmond, Oregon. Jerry is survived by his wife, Connie and four children: Tammy, Keith, Dallas and Kathy Shoun.

Goldy Mae Luckett, 76, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022, at her home. Goldy was born on December 6, 1945 to the late Preston and Anna Mae Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ivan Williams and Jean Oliver.
Goldy was a very caring and giving person who always had a smile on her face. She was a hard worker and loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandkids. She faithfully attended Mountain City Baptist Church until her illness prevented her from doing so.
Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Shelly Summerow (Craig Tester); sons, Kenny Luckett (Dianna) and Joey Luckett (Christy); sisters, Cassie Church and Donna Dugger; brothers, Eddie Williams (Lisa), Jewel Williams (Ivy) and Mack Williams (Susan); grandchildren, Corey and Marissa Summerow, Macey, Maelie, Madelyn and Mason Luckett, Trevor and Hayden Luckett; special friend and caregiver, Willie Neely; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family received friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Monday, January 24, at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service followed at 3 p.m. with Pastor Daniel Jones officiating. The graveside service and interment followed at Sunset Memorial Park. Active pallbearers were Corey Summerow, Trevor Luckett, Hayden Luckett, Joseph Lawson, Skylar Lawson and Mason Luckett. Ivan Lee Williams, age 71, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on March 20, 1948 to the late Preston and Anna Mae Oliver Williams. In addition to his parents, Ivan was preceded in death by his brother, Doris Oliver.

Ivan was a great man and lived a simple life. He was a very gifted and talented carpenter. He was always willing to help others and was a very giving man. Ivan was very kind and always happy. Ivan also enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. He loved his pets, the parakeet, Polly and his Ducky. He was of the Christian faith.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sisters, Cassie Church, Goldie Luckett and Donna Roberts; brothers, Mack Williams, Eddie Williams and Jewel Williams; special nephews, Brandon Williams and Dillon Williams; very special great nephew, Preston Williams and several loved nieces and nephews, and special friends and neighbors.

The graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the Family Cemetery, Jimmy Hollow Road, Butler, TN; with Pastor Harold Morefield officiating. Pallbearers will be Eddie Williams, Mack Williams, Chris Blevins, Brandon Williams, Justin Howes and Dillon Williams.

Eric Scott Oliver, 50, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 9, 2021. He was born April 23, 1971 in Johnson City.
Scott was a graduate of Hampton High School. He was self-employed in the lawn business. Prior to that he was employed at Douglas Dynamic for 20 years. He loved fishing, hiking, loved being with friends and he loved his children with all his heart. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Scott was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carl and Nora Hardin, and his paternal grandparents, Stacey and Helen Oliver.
Survivors include his children, Sydney Oliver and Nicholas Oliver; his father, Stacey Oliver Sr. and his wife Ternia, Maiden, N.C.; his mother, Sherry Fortner and husband Kenneth, Elizabethton; a sister, Carla Schroeder and husband Tony, Maiden, N.C.; a brother, Stacey “Jimmy” Oliver, Elizabethton; a special aunt, Charlotte Williams; a special uncle, Carl Hardin Jr.; one niece, Alanna Sigmon; one nephew, Brandon Arthur; a great-niece, Baby Holland; many cousins and many friends he loved very much including his best friend, Dale Campbell, and all his friends at Douglas Dynamic.
The graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 14, in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery with Dr. Alan King officiating. Music will be provided by Amy Banner. Interment will follow the service. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 3:20 p.m. Saturday, will be Dale Campbell, Keith Foster, Hal Nave, Terry Banner, Brian Kyte and Leslie Grindstaff. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Nave and Chris Roberson.

ELIZABETHTON - Cathy Ann Hardin McBane, 64, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, November 26, 2021 in the Life Carter Center of Elizabethton. She was a native of Carter County, born July 26, 1957. Cathy was a graduate of Unaka High School and Milligan College with a degree in Education. She was a School Teacher and also worked at Greene Valley. She was a member of Unaka Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father; John Elwayne Hardin who passed away October 25, 1983.
Survivors include her mother: Ann Renfro Hardin. One uncle, Lawrence Hardin of Elizabethton. Also, several cousins.
Graveside Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2021 in the Blevins Cemetery with the Rev. Walker Roberson officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Herbert L. Williams, 69, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, February 3, 2020, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Elizabethton on July 1, 1950 to the late Hoover and Rada Williams. He was a retired mechanic. He loved working on cars and lawn mowers. He enjoyed playing music and singing with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lynice Ritchie, and a daughter, Leca Bailey.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Williams, daughter, Reca Hazelwood, son, Jeff Williams, brother, Jessie Williams, sister, Patricia Carden, and brother, Richard Williams, all of Elizabethton. His grandchildren include Britney Taylor, Christopher Campbell, Nicholas Williams, Autumn Williams, Aliana Williams, Charlie Williams, Joseph Campbell, Summer Brock, Brandon Oliver, Skyler Campbell and Lexi Oliver; and a host of nieces and nephews and a long list of great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will assemble for a celebration of life at Moore’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church on February 6. Services will start at 6 p.m. with Rev. Willie Campbell.

Lynice married Ernest Lynn Ritchie about 1988 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Ernest (son of John K. Ritchie and Hattie Etta Love) was born on 21 Dec 1938 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 11 Oct 2013 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Ritch Cemetery, , Carter County, Tennessee. ELIZABETHTON - Richard Gale Williams, age 62, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at his residence.

Richard was born in Elizabethton to the late Hoover and Rada Peters Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Herbert Williams and Lynice Ritchie.

Richard was a graduate of Unaka High School and had worked for Grady’s Drycleaners in Johnson City for many years, also, he helped open and worked at Tri-Cities Wholesale Tobacco Store #1 in Boones Creek. Richard was once a member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He also drove a school bus for Carter County bus garage and did transporting for the Norfolk Southern Railroad Company in Bristol. Richard was of the Christian faith and attended Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

Richard loved to sing, loved a good joke and announced local wrestling events/ E.C.W. and others. He also enjoyed working the old scoreboard for Nascar at BMS races. Richard also sang with different groups both gospel and country. Richard was a band booster member for several years for the Betsy Band in Elizabethton, Tennessee. He also enjoyed camping at Little Wilbur and Roan Mountain campground. Richard had also coached a girls’ softball team junior league for Stacey’s Carpet during the years of 1985 - 1987.

Those left to cherish his many wonderful memories include his fiancé, Helen Harris, of the home; his children, Richard Shane Williams and wife Jessica, of Unicoi County, Heather Diane Williams and fiancé Kenneth Harrison II, of Johnson City and daughters-to-be, Heather Reed and Melissa Landry; his special friend/ brother, Danny Simmons, Tommy Addair, Randall Chapman, Earl and Jaye Hattan; eleven grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia, Kelsey, Kenneth III, Elijah, all from Johnson City, TN, Steven and Salym, of Elizabethton, Brooklynn, Charlie, Jonas, all of Kingsport and Betsy, of Virginia Beach, VA; a great granddaughter, Annabelle; and two siblings, Patricia “Trish” Carden and Jessie Williams. Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

Vivian Carol (Clark) Stout, born September 15, 1951, of Butler, went into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Monday, February 22, 2021, after coping with multiple health problems for a lengthy period of time.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Clark Jr. and Zella Ruth (Smith) Clark of Stoney Creek; one sister, Janice Clark of Elizabethton; and her son, Jeffrey Kyle Stout of Butler.
She has left her memory with survivors, her daughter, Beverly McIntosh, Butler; granddaughter, Nikki Trivette (and Matt Severns), Butler; two sisters, Teresa Clark, Johnson City, and Kelly Taylor (and Shane), Jonesborough; one brother, Kevin Clark (and Angie), Elizabethton; one niece, Whitney Clark; and two nephews, Devin Clark and Jimmy Taylor. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and special friends.
Vivian was a long-time member of Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler, where she enjoyed choir, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, was an active member of WMU, and served for many years as the Youth Group Leader. Until her health began failing, her church activities were among her greatest joys.
As a young wife, mother, and homemaker, Vivian enjoyed time with her family, sewing, reading, home food preservation, camping, caring for children, and meeting new people. Later, she spent many years doing restaurant work as a cook and in grocery store delis. Most recently, she loved reading on her Nook and navigating the internet, reading and shopping.
Vivian’s favorite time of year was Christmas and she never allowed failing health to interfere with her enjoyment of the season, from celebrating the birth of Christ, to decorations, to time with family and making tasty treats to share with others. It was important to Vivian that she share some happiness with all whom she came in contact, always offering a smile and word of encouragement to family, friends, and strangers alike. Vivian will be greatly missed, but remembered for her kind and gentle nature.
Her family expresses great appreciation for the home health nurses of Amedysis; caregivers of Hillview Home Services; staff of Fresenius Dialysis Center, Mountain City; and members of Johnson County Rescue Squad, especially Danny Huddleston.
In accordance with Vivian’s wishes, there will be no funeral services at this time. A memorial service will be planned in the near future.
