ROBERT L. HYDER
Robert L. Hyder, 60 year old resident of Gap Creek, died at his home on Tuesday morning after an illness of several months. Mr. Hyder was a native of Carter county and a member of the Christian church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Florence Hyder; two daughters, Mrs. Ed Meredith, Mrs. Ray Woodby of Gap Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Chalie Collins, Mrs. Ray Hyder of Gap Creek; two brothers, Charlie Hyder of Detroit, Tip Hyder of Johnson City.
Mr. Hyder was a Spanish-American war veteran serving with the 7th volunteer Infantry of Tennessee.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Christian Church of Gap Creek Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. John Shepherd, John Meredith, John Hall, Oswald Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Hyder-McKinney Cemetery.

MILLIGAN COLLEGE — Mr. George "PeePee" Hammitt Jr., of Milligan College, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, in the LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville, TN.

He was the son of the late Eva Glover Hammitt and George Hammitt Sr. and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a brother, Luther Hammitt; two sisters, Mary Hammitt and Dollie Davenport.

Mr. Hammitt was a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Air Force and served in WWII. He retired from Caudle Wholesale, where he worked as a contractor, after twenty years of service. He enjoyed reading, carpentry and woodworking, NASCAR and his visitations with Pastor Mark Street and Wes Barnett. He was a member of American Legion Post #49 and of Milligan Free Will Baptist Church.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of sixty- three years, Margaret Hopson Hammitt, of the home; two daughters, Shirlene Hammitt Sholes and her husband, Dillard, M. Sholes III, of Johnson City, Sharon K. Hammitt, of the home; a special granddaughter, Dr. Paige L. Sholes, Johnson City; a brother, Archie Hammitt and his wife, Jean, Elizabethton; and his faithful companions, BooBoo, Little Bit, Sadie and Sophia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Hammitt will be conducted on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 2:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Pastor Mark Street officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joel Street.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 12:30-2:00 PM on Saturday prior to the service and at the home of his daughter, Shirlene, 800 Forest Avenue, Johnson City, at other times.

The committal and entombment service will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Mausoleum of Peace. Active pallbearers will be Wes Barnett, Kevin Lewis, Sam Hopson, Thomas Hopson, Dr. Matthew Hobbs and Harold Hopson. Agnes Glover Blackburn, 93, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Hillview Health Center. Agnes was born in Carter County to the late Frank and Bertie Sims Glover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Stuart “Haney” Blackburn; her first husband, C.O. Polen Jr.; and six siblings, Ed Harris, James Glover, Charles Glover, Lillian Carden, Mary Moody and Edna Cole.
Agnes was a longtime member of Zion Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, reading and visiting Amish country.
Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Carroll Glover (Janet), Janette West (Tony), Anna Hodge and Orin Blackburn (Carol); grandchildren, Tim Barnett (Shelia), Travis Glover, Dustin Glover, Chris West, Samantha Martinez (Josh), Grace Blackburn and Mallory Blackburn; great-grandchildren, Riley Barnett, Kaden Roberts and Sophie Martinez; and special friend, Leonard Cross. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will hold a celebration of life service for Agnes Glover Blackburn at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Caleb King officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Agnes will be laid to rest at Mountain Home National Cemetery and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

ELIZABETHTON - Glenda "Sue" Hampton, age 80, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 11, 2019 from Signature Health and Rehab Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness.

Sue was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Dan and Lydia Mae Glover Matherly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Glenn Hampton; four sisters, Ethel Matherly, Louise Hay, Anna B. Whaley and Nell Matherly; and one brother, Howard "Red" Matherly.

Sue was always on the go! Either working around the church or cooking for the church. She had worked at Pizza Inn for over 30 years and was very proud of her service. She was a loyal and devoted member of Sims Hill Christian Church and enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, cooking, traveling on bus tours and most especially Sue loved being around her family and her church family.

Those left to cherish her wonderful memories include her daughter, Melissa Carr and husband Tim and her grandson, Dylan Carr, all of Elizabethton; a sister, Jean Matherly, of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Lois Matherly, of Elizabethton; and her nieces and nephews, Jill Baggett and Loria Gabert, both of Alabama, Sandy Cole and Dan Matherly, of Elizabethton. Several great nieces and great nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Glenda "Sue" Hampton will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 14, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Gerald Holly, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 15, 2019 in the Sims Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tim Carr, Dylan Carr, Bryan Miller and Derrick Hamm. Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Henry, Rock Kelly, Dan Matherly and Jimmy Cole.

Mr. Billie Jack Glover, age 89, of Johnson City, TN passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in NHC Health Care-Johnson City following a brief illness.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the NHC Health Care-Johnson City for the loving care given to Mr. Glover.

The families of Jack Glover will hold a Celebration of Life to honor the man who was special to so many. It will take place Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Fellowship Hall of Fall Creek Baptist Church, 4241 Beech Mountain Rd., Elk Park, NC.

Born May 22, 1927, Jack went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Bess Glover, and a sister Georgia Ford.

He is survived by two sisters: Pearl (Kenneth) Jones and Betty (Bob) Townsend, both of Johnson City.

Jack's first wife, Nadine (Church) Glover, passed away, leaving him with three young children: Judy Kay Scott, David (Donna) Glover of Meadville, PA and Phillip Glover (deceased). At this time, Jack helped to create a new family, joining with his Aunt Mayzie Hagie (deceased), a widow with two children still at home: Stanley (Kathy) Hagie of Sylvan Beach, NY and Jean (Tim) Sherwood (deceased).

After many years, he met and married his second wife, Nadine (Hangartner) Glover (deceased). She was a widow with five children: George, Sam (Gwen), Anita (Wayne) D'Hondt, Darlene (Arthur) Platt, all of NY and Tim (Kim) Hangartner of Morristown, TN (deceased).
Jack became "Dad", "Papa", "Pop" or "Jackson" to all. He was also Grandpa to many including Christina (Robert) Warnock, Stephanie (Tom) McCaffrey, Jeff (Kim) Glover, Darryl (April) Glover, Silver Marie Glover, Ken (Glenda) Hagie, Madeline Sherwood, Aaron (Kelly) Sherwood, Emily (Chris) Byler, Nate (Sara) Zapp, Ginni Platt, Jeff Platt, Deanna (Tom) Poczciwinski, Sam Hangartner and Kyle, Aubrie and Tyler Hangartner. He had several great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. His nieces and nephews were special to him and he was known to some as "Our Tennessee Dad". He had a special "daughter", Deltah (Paul) Kleinhans, and remained close all his life to the siblings of his first wife: Vivian Schackow, Joyce Reece (deceased) and Ross, Dale, Hobert Jr. and Lowell Church.

Billie married Vera Nadine Church about 1949. JOHNSON CITY - Edna Pearl Glover Jones, 88, Johnson City went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 6, 2018 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Dave & Bess Emmert Glover. Mrs. Jones worked at TPI and retired from North Electric. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter: Edna Ruth Terry, A Grandson: Jeff Buck, a Brother: Billy Jack Glover and a sister: Georgia Ford. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years: Kenneth Jones. A Son & Daughter-in-Law: Tony & Irene Jones, Johnson City. Four Grandchildren: Mark Jones, Brian Buck & Wife Tracie, Mooresville, NC., Tina Michelle Buck and friend, Mike Hughes, Elizabethton and Kim Reec & husband Anthony. Seven Great Grandchildren. A sister: Betty Townsend & husband Bobby, Johnson City. Her son-in-law: Edward Terry. Several nieces & nephews including a special niece; Judy Kay Scott.

A Service to Celebrate the life in Edna Jones will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Alan King officiating, and Pastor Bobby Stout officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Cindy Johnson. Active Pallbearers will be: Mark Jones, Anthony Reece, Brian Buck, Riley Buck, Mike Hughes, Jeff Townsend, Kevin Townsend and Bobby Townsend. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Jean Etta Barnes White, age 88, of Lawrenceville, GA, went home to Heaven on Friday, February 22, 2019.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edgar Barnes; her mother, Jeanette Kyte Barnes; and a brother, Robert Barnes, all of Elizabethton.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Harry "Bud" White, of Lawrenceville, GA; a daughter, Sandi White, of Dacula, GA; a son, Richard E. White and wife Margene, of Dacula, GA; two grandchildren, Gina M. White, of Augusta, GA and Daniel R. White, of Statesboro, GA; and two nephews, James E. Barnes and wife Tammy, of Elizabethton, and Robert A. Barnes and wife Betty, of Hampton.

Jean was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She grew up in the area around Horseshoe Dam and on Powder Branch, and was a proud graduate of Milligan College. She had a passion for music, and sang in the choirs of First Christian Church of Elizabethton and Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Atlanta. She was employed at Eastman Chemical Company and later at the Emory University Clinic, from which she retired after 18 years of dedicated service. During her retirement years, she worked to achieve her goal of authoring a book, and published "I Don't Wanna Grow Old" in 2010.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Jean Barnes White will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Dr. Richard White providing the eulogy. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday.

The committal and entombment service for Jean Barnes White will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 28, 2019 in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 AM on Thursday.

Susan Jane Kyte Lowe, 63, a loving mother, sister and aunt of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Beulah "Meme" Robinson Kyte.
Jane was a homemaker who was the neighborhood Mom to kids. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Elizabethton. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and her animals and she loved Christmas time.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Puanana Elliott; a step-son, Monty Lowe; and a niece, Victoria "Tora" Orren.
Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Noah Lowe, and his fiancée and Jane's caregiver, Amanda Wilson, both of Elizabethton; her husband and loving friend, C. Raymond Lowe, Elizabethton; three step-children, Ricky Lowe and wife Tracey, Joey Lowe and wife Lisa and Sonja Holtsclaw and husband Rick, all of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Kelsey Cullop and Christian Lowe, and several step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosalonia Edwards, Elizabethton, and Sharon Fritts of Missouri. Several nieces and nephews, including three special nieces, Tina Garrison, Rosa Colbaugh and Joann Handy, all of Elizabethton, and several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Susan Jane Kyte Lowe will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, December 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone will meet at Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services at 2:15 p.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the residence at any time. It was Jane's wish that those who choose to send flowers, send only one rose.

JOHNSON CITY - Joy Lee Sechrest Allen, 90, of Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on June 8, 2023, following a beautiful life.

She was born in Johnson City to Paul and Alma Lee (Rowe) Sechrest. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University and taught high school English, speech, and drama in Baltimore, MD and Kingsport, TN prior to her marriage to Dr. Charles E. Allen in 1956.

Joy was a gifted actress and singer, and one of the funniest people ever to set foot on a stage. Her acting and directing prowess were evident in many fine productions at the Johnson City Community Theatre and at First Christian Church, where she was a longtime, faithful member. She belonged to the Johnson City Music Club, the Washington County Medical Auxiliary, and the Shady Oaks Garden Club, and her beautiful flower arrangements often took first place at adjudicated flower shows. She loved to entertain and was a superb cook and warm and welcoming hostess. For many years she blessed numerous women through her classes in make-up and fashion and her clothing store, Joy Allen Classics.

But undoubtedly Joy’s starring role was as wife and mother. She and Ed were shining examples of loving Christian marriage and parenting. Joy managed a hectic schedule with aplomb. She took enthusiastic interest in the myriad school, extracurricular, and church activities of four children. She always had time to listen, and her counsel was wise and to-the-point. By example she taught life lessons in being grateful, generous, kind, and unselfish. There was a delicious home-cooked supper on the table every night. She made every holiday festive and joyous. “Gahghi” and her three grandchildren mutually adored each other, and she delighted in planning exciting activities and treats for them. She never lost her playfulness or her curiosity about learning new things. She always took time to let Ed know how special he was to her and how very much she loved him. Her faith in God was quiet and deep, and she loved and served him with her whole heart.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents and by the love of her life, Ed, her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her children Jill Allen Lagerberg, Charles Allen Jr. and his wife Barbara, John Allen and his wife Lesley, and Jennifer Allen; by her grandchildren Charles (Chip) Allen III, Wes Allen, and Carin Gunter and her husband Evan; and by her sister Gail Thompson.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the four wonderful caregivers who loved Joy as if she were their own mother and whose tender care made her last years peaceful and happy: Rita Snodgrass, Teresa Davis, Shirley Dover, and Jennifer Tipton; and to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate service.

Family and friends will gather at Monte Vista Memorial Park, 1900 E. Oakland Avenue, on Sunday, June 11 at 2:00 PM for the graveside committal service.

ELIZABETHTON - Kay M. Edens, 76, of Elizabethton, TN passed away on July 12 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Edens was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Elbert and Blanche Hyder Meredith and Lucille Meredith who graciously stepped in to help raise Kay after her mother died. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold D. Edens and a brother and sister-in-law Willie G. and Patsy Meredith.

Mrs. Edens is survived by a son, Mark Edens (Anna), a daughter, Beth Tester (Larry), and the greatest joy of her life- her granddaughter, Eden Tester. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Jean White and Nancy Alsup, a special niece, Carolyn Dawson, and a special nephew who called weekly, John Meredith. She also leaves behind special friends Gilda Reed, Judy Scalf, Pam Slayton, and Georgia Jaynes.

Mrs. Edens was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Christian Church and the Maggie Kyte Ladies’ Circle.

Kay was a 1964 graduate of Happy Valley High School and a 1966 graduate of Steed College. She retired from the VA Medical Center as a Medical Record Technician.

Kay was also a homemaker who enjoyed traveling, camping, cooking, shopping, canning, and freezing. She also enjoyed college football and basketball; especially the TN Vols teams. She also enjoyed being outdoors, nature, and the beauty of God’s creation.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Burleson, Jeff Chambers, Billy Jaynes, Chris Hughes, Luther McKeehan, Larry Tester.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kirk Hayes, Teddy Reed, Brad Jaynes, Phil Coleman, Tommy Little, Jeff Holt, John Meredith, Terry Meredith, David Meredith, Dylan Garrett, Bryce Garrett, David Slonaker, the men of Oak Grove Christian Church, and the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for their loving care and also to the staff of Amedysis Hospice.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Jeff Curtis Minister and chaplain Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

JOHNSON CITY - Sharon "Katie" Hammitt, age 66, of Johnson City, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at her residence.

Katie was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of Margaret Lee Hopson Hammitt and the late George Hammitt, Jr. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Lee Hammitt; her maternal grandparents, Tommie and Mary Hopson; her paternal grandmother, Eva Glover Hammitt; and several aunts and uncles.

Katie retired as a pharmacy tech and was a member of Milligan Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed Duke Basketball, cross-stitching and floral arrangement.

Those left to cherish her memory include her mother, Margaret Lee Hopson Hammitt, of the home; her sister, Shirlene Hammitt Sholes and husband Dillard M. Sholes, III, of Johnson City; a special niece, Dr. Paige L. Sholes, of Johnson City; two special friends, Rebecca Street, of Roan Mountain and Amy Hotelling, of Unicoi. Several cousins also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Sharon "Katie" Hammitt will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Mark Street, officiating and Wes Barnett, providing a eulogy. Music will be provided by Joel Street. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday or at the residence at any time.

The committal and entombment service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Mausoleum of Peace. Active pallbearers will be Wes Barnett, Sam Hopson, Jason Lloyd, Nathaniel Lloyd, Wayne Smith and J.L. Hammitt. Honorary pallbearers will be B. Cable, Dr. Karmen Paulson, Dr. Jane Jones, Curt Alexander, Kathy Thomason and William Young.
