Teter served in the Union Army, during the Civil War, and was a P.O.W. MRS. BETTY GRINDSTAFF
Mrs. Betty Grindstaff, 80, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. A. Berry, Mountain City, route 1, after an illness of the past three weeks.
Mrs. Grindstaff was a member of the Baptist church of Mountain City and has lived a lifetime in Johnson county and surrounding district.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. M. A. Berry; one sister, Mrs. Retta Wilson, Mountain City; two brothers, David Nave, state of Washington, who is visiting in the community at the present time; John Nave of California.
Funeral services probably will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at the Christian church, which is located on the Mountain City road, with burial in the Wilson Cemetery.
The body will be taken to the home at five o'clock this afternoon. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tetrick Funeral Home.

...94, Mountain City, Route 1, Bristol Highway, died at her home Wednesday at 8 a.m. after several week's illness. Mrs. Cress was a native of Johnson County and the widow of the late William Albert Cress. She was a member of the Valley View Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence C. Cress of Greeneville and Claude M. Cress, Mountain City; two daughters, Lucy Cress of Mountain City and Mrs. Nora L. Cress Ward, Neva; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Saunders, Portland, Ore.; a brother, Roy Jenkins of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted from the Lewis Gentry Funeral Home Chapel Friday at 11 a.m. with H.T. Mabry and Rev. A.E. Browne officiating. Burial was in Phillippi Cemetery.

Mountain City News – A telegram was received here Monday announcing the death of Isaac Grindstaff at his home in Canada. Mr. Grindstaff was about 40 years of age. He was a native of this county, but had been away for several years. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Betty Grindstaff, and one sister, Mrs. Hugh Barry, who reside here. Funeral arrangements have not been announced pending arrival of the body home.

Ruth Millsaps Dillard passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at Life Care of Elizabethton.

Today our family, friends and community celebrate the life of Ruth Millsaps Dillard. Ruth was born September 2, 1915, in Mountain City, TN, to the late David and Amelia Moore Nave. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Ellard "Birdeye" Millsaps; a daughter, Florence Millsaps Isaacs, in 1984; three Sisters, Mary Alice Stout, Artie Lott and Kate Thomas; four Brothers, John Nave, Ralph Nave, Ike Nave and Luther Nave,

Ruth and her family moved from Old Butler in 1948. She and her family relocated to the present day community of Butler, TN. Prior to her death she was one of a handful of original surviving residents from Old Butler.

Ruth, along with her husband, were proprietors of Birdseye's Service Station and Grill for 30 years. Ruth had decades of fond memories and events that occurred over the years. She spoke fondly of the many friends she was blessed to know during her years in Butler. Ruth was active in the community and welcomed all to her home on Main Street.

During the move from Old Butler, Ruth would hear the sound of buildings being moved to the newly established community of Butler and with each home and business that relocated, she knew that another part of the original town was gone. Through her relentless spirit and determination, she along with her husband, built a home and business that would contribute in many ways to the community and be a loving place to raise their family.

As years passed, Ruth was always eager to share her knowledge of the community, the changes she lived through, and shared many of the stories she experienced with her many friends and neighbors. These are precious memories that will live on in our hearts forever.

Ruth married Jess Dillard in 1982 and they continued to reside in Butler. Ruth and Jess spent 29 happy years together. Ruth was a lifelong member of the Butler Baptist Church.

Ruth is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Matherly, of Powell, TN, and Doris Ann Harry and husband, Bill, of Butler; one son, Raymond Millsaps and wife, Imogene, of Elizabethton; Special family friend, George Richmond, of Oak Ridge, TN; 10 Grandchildren: Deborah Woodward, Amelia Jarvis, Bo Matherly, Steve Isaacs, Pat Rhudy, David Millsaps, Doug Millsaps, Candice Sieiro, Rena Tittle and Michael White; 12 Great Grandchildren; 9 Great Great Grandchildren; and 8 Step-Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Daniel Wood officiating. Music will be provided by Sharon and Sara Millsaps and Rev. Daniel Wood.

Burial will follow the service in the Butler Memorial Cemetery with music provided by Jon Shell, Piper.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Active Pallbearers, who are requested to be at the funeral home by 1:55 p.m., are: David Millsaps, Doug Millsaps and Steve Isaacs, Bo Matherly, Matthew Millsaps, Ben Isaacs, Tony Rhudy and Walt Tittle III. JOHNSON COUNTAIN KILLED AS AUTO OVERTURNS ON ROAD
MOUNTAIN CITY – Funeral services were planned here today for Walter Cress, 27, who was killed yesterday morning when the car he was driving overturned, throwing him against a tree, bringing instant death. Paul Shoun and Miss Marjorie Miller, two other occupants of the car, were uninjured in the accident, which occurred on the Mountain City-Trade highway.
After turning over the car rolled down an embankment into a creek. Cress suffered a broken neck and bruises about the head.
He is survived by his wife and one child, Mrs. W. A. Cress, his mother; four brothers, Worley, Claude and Eugene of Mountain City, and Clarence of Greeneville; two sisters, Lucy Cress and Mrs. Ray War.

BUTLER — Chester "Tilley" Stout, 89, Butler, passed away Monday March 26, 2012, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late George and Elsie Nave Stout. He was a World War II Navy Veteran.

Mr. Stout graduated from East Tennessee State College and pursued predoctural studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He began his career in 1952 as an educator at Doe Elementary School, Mountain City, where he served as teacher and principal and basketball coach.

He furthered his career, beginning in 1962, as a college instructor in the Earth Science Department at East Tennessee State University, providing 38 years of service until his retirement in 2000.

He was an avid gardener.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Rainbolt Hilton Stout, January 28, 2000.

He attended Little Doe Baptist Church.

Survivors include three children: Gary Hilton, Butler, and Hilda Stout Dugger, of the home, and Mona Stout, Johnson City; Two Grandchildren: Tori Stout, Johnson City, and Eric Stout and his wife, Veronica, of Elizabethton.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, with Mr. Dennis Hamm officiating.

Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. Military Honors and Pallbearers will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. David Fanner, Jim Rainbolt, Clayton Brown, Ray Stout, Sam Stout, Jerry Stout, Steve Dugger, Larry Bobbitt and Larry Potter.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence.

Berlie A 'Buck' Barry, age 88, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the Mountain City Care Center.

He was born on February 13, 1924 to the late Daniel Hugh Barry and Mary Alice Grindstaff Barry. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three sisters: Rachel Greer, Lulu Wells and Anna Wells. a brother, Ray Barry.

Berlie was a 1944 graduate of Johnson County High School and a 1946 graduate of Elizabethton Business College. He founded Barry Real Estate Auction Company and after many years of service, retired from the company.

He enjoyed working around his farm and with his cattle. He also enjoyed working in his garden with his wife Mary. Berlie was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F&AM and the Jericho Shrine Temple. He was a faithful member of Liberty Christian Church. Berlie loved his family and spending time with them and he will be missed by all.

Berlie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary I. Crussell Barry; daughter, Alice Faye McCloud; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Gearlene Barry, Wayne and Vickie Barry and Joe and Pat Barry, all of Mountain City, TN; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Mary J. Swift, age 76, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

She was born on April 30, 1943, in Mountain City, Johnson County, TN to the late Ray W. Ward and Nora Lee (Cress) Ward. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Theodore 'Ted' Shores.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 48 years, Jack Swift; sister, Nancy Carol Shores; special friend of many years, Margaret Cress; niece, Debbie Flanders and husband John of Sherman, TX; nephew, Greg Swift and wife Sheila of Powell, TN; cousins, Roy, David and Richard Snyder, Hal and Wayne Ward, Bob Miller, Margaret Myers and Albert Cress, and many more special friends and neighbors.

Mary was a member of First Christian Church and of the Joy Sunday School Class. She was past President of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #61 and past Secretary of the Johnson County Historical Society. In her spare time, Mary loved to go shopping.

In addition to her parents, and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Willard Paul Stout; a daughter, Julie Ann O'Quinn; a sister, Charlotte Lowe; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A graduate of Elizabethton High School, she attended Treveca University, in Nashville, where she majored in music and also Steed Business College, where she was in the Medical Secretary Program. She was a member of the Beta Alpha Chi Sorority. Mary Lou was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she served as pianist. She also served as a pianist in other area churches. She was a member of the Elizabethton Community Handbell Choir for many years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Elizabethton/Carter County Boys and Girls Club, the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club and the Christian Women's Club of Johnson City. She was an employee of Tri-State Container Corporation for fifteen years. She was the secretary at Central Elementary School for five years before becoming an administrative assistant at Tetrick Funeral Home from 1994 to her retirement in 2006, where she continued working part time until 2012.

JOHNSON CITY - Dorothy Baird Carpenter of Johnson City, died Friday morning, September 16, 2016, at Asbury Place, Kingsport. She was born in Elizabethton, TN on April 30, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Maudene Nave Baird. She grew up in the Central Community and graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1950.

After graduating from East Tennessee State College, she began her career in education as a teacher/librarian at Washington College Academy. She earned a Masters Degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and became a librarian at Lees McRae College and later King College. On a federally funded fellowship, she did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota. She became a library educator at Appalachian State University. After 19 years, she retired from ETSU as an associate professor.

Mrs. Carpenter was active in the library education association until her retirement. She was a member of the Johnson City Monday Club and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clayton L. Carpenter, in 2001; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and James P. Hayes, Jr.; and niece, Cheryl L. Hayes.

Dorothy is survived by her stepdaughter, LTC. Patricia Schiefer, USAFR (ret) of San Antonio, TX; grandson, Dr. Matthew A. Schiefer and wife, Dr. Marjorie Montanez of Cleveland, Ohio; niece Bobbie Phillips and husband, Dennis of Kingsport; nephew, James (Jay) Hayes of Kingsport; grand-nephew, James Phillips and wife, Crystal of Kingsport; and grand-nephew, Evan Hayes of Kingsport.

At the request of the deceased there will not be a funeral or memorial service. Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 9:00 am at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. MOUNTAIN CITY - Daniel W. Barry, age 69, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on January 17, 1947 in Mountain City, TN to the late Berlie A. Barry and Mary I. Crussell Barry.

Daniel was a former principal at Little Milligan Elementary School until his retirement in 2001. He was one who loved genealogy and had many names on the tree. Daniel was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 and an active member of the Dewey Christian Church.

Daniel is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gearlene Parks Barry; sister, Alice McCloud of Johnson City, TN; brothers: Joe Barry and wife Pat and Wayne Barry and wife Vickie all of Mountain City, TN; brother-in-law, Gene Parks and wife Ann of Elk Creek, VA; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home with the Funeral Service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Minister C.D. 'Bud' Gentry officiating. Bo Matherly died August 19th, 9 days shy of his 61st birthday.

Bo died of complications following a delayed reaction to heparin. He is survived by Teresa, his wife of 39 years, son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Kathy Matherly, grand-daughter Ty Grace Matherly, mother Lorraine Matherly, sister Debbie Woodward and sister and brother-in-law Amelia and Jim Jarvis, nieces Shelley Sullivan, Aleshia Dodd and Amanda Fox, great nieces Caitlyn Sullivan, Kylie Fox, Kelsey Brown, great nephews Carter Sullivan, Kayden Fox, Urijah and Moses Dodd. Bo was preceded in death by his father, Bill Matherly, paternal grandparents Percy E and Verta Matherly, maternal grandparents Ellard (Bird Eye) Millsaps and Ruth Millsaps Dillard.

Bo worked at Stowers Machinery for over 44 years. He loved his job as Used Equipment Manager and he was proud to be a part of the Stowers family. Bo always said he was not going to quit work until it stopped being fun and part of that fun was the many contacts through work that became life-long friends.

Bo enjoyed life and aside from his family and work, boating on Norris Lake and Tennessee football were his passions. Bo always wanted to make sure everyone had fun and was well fed. We will miss his big smile and his infectious laugh and those Bo-isms that made him so loved by all.

The family wants to thank "The Bo Team" who helped us attempt to bring Bo back from the event of May 9th. That team is Ramona and Chuck Powell, Todd Jakoby, Larry Cummins, Rhonda Leuch, Shirley Calloway, Tony Parkerson, David Kerr and Wes Stowers. A special thank you to Nick Powell for helping to keep the lake house managed while we focused on Bo and a special thank you to Teresa's UPA family who helped support her with food, work and a chance to have some "normal" during the last three months.

The family also wants to thank the exceptional staff at UT Medical Center CVICU and at Select Specialty Hospital at Tennova North. From the rehab attempts to the realization Bo could not recover, you never waivered in your caring attitude for Bo and support for our family. You live and breathe "Let Hope Thrive" and are an example of how long term acute care should work.

Visitation will be on Saturday, August 25th from 1-4 PM at Sharon Baptist Church, 7916 Pedigo Road, Powell, TN. A memorial service will start at 4 PM.

The only way our family can make sense of what happened to Bo is to prevent other families from this experience. We will be working with UT Medical Center to find a way to identify patients at risk for Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT), therefore, in lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Bo Matherly to UT Medical Center Development Office, 2121 Medical Center Way, Suite 110, Knoxville, TN 37920 for the Cardiac Research Gift Fund.

ELIZABETHTON - James Hartsell Garland, age 76, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

James was born in Johnson City, Tennessee to the late TN and Hazel Waters Garland of Peters Hollow in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton.

Hartsell was a Vietnam Combat veteran with the 1st Infantry Division of XM454 Nuclear Weapons Unit. He was a life member of VFW Post 2166 of Elizabethton. Hartsell was also a member of the Sons of the Revolution and 1st Families of the Civil War. He retired from the Eastman Chemical Company after 31 years of service.

Hartsell was of the Christian faith. He loved life and meeting people and knew people from around the world. His greatest joy was teaching kids Appalachian music. He was a musician and maker of gourd instruments.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years, Lula Buckles Garland; and two sisters, Diana Gail Lowe and Teresa Taylor.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of James Hartsell Garland will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Gerald Holly and Mr. Wayne Mottern, ministers, officiating.
