    His death certificate states that he died on September 24, 1925 due to an accident. He was seen by the doctor on September 22, 1925. His year of birth is incorrect on the document, stating that he was born on December 17, 1883. However his age at the time of his death was 31 years,9 months, and 7 days, making his date of birth December 17, 1894. The dates, as well as the spelling of his first name on the marker, are all incorrect.

    The 1900 census gives his birth date as being Dec. 1892 and the 1910 & 1920 censuses give it as est. 1893. On his WWI Draft Registration card he gave the same birth date that is on the headstone Dec. 17, 1892. Died in in Asheville, NC on Sept. 24th from the train accident on Sept. 22, 1925 in Sunburst, NC., per death certificate - Headstone gives the date as Sept. 14, 1925.

    ROAN MOUNTAIN – It is with extreme sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Sarah J. Whitehead, 88, Roan Mountain, who passed away Monday June 1, 2009, in the Roan Highland Nursing Center after an extended illness.

    She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Jacob and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

    Sarah loved to work in her flowers and vegetable garden. She freely shared her bounty with friends and neighbors and family, whatever their needs may be. She was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church.

    JOHNSON CITY - Wanda Mae Guinn Pate, 94, of Johnson City, passed way on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at her residence. She was surrounded by caregivers, friends, and close nephew, Donnie Pate, who will all miss her dearly.

    She was a lifelong resident of Carter County, daughter of the late Jack and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

    Wanda loved life. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Bill, making a lifetime of memories across the world. Back home at home she spent time crafting, collecting, and attending service at Grace Gospel Church.

    In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: husband, Bill J. Pate; brothers, George Guinn, Tommy Guinn, and Otis Guinn; sisters, Dorothy “Dottie” Forbes of Elizabethton, Myrtle Elliot, Sarah Whitehead, and Lee McKinney.

    She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

    The family would like to thank the caregivers from Visiting Angels for the exceptional care they gave Wanda in their time with her, going above and beyond every day. Special thanks are also extended to Michelle and the rest of the hospice team at Amedysis for their compassion and care.

A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he was the son of the late Ernie and Dolly Casey Simerly. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with his degree in Electrical Engineering. "Gene" retired as an electrical engineer at Phillips Electronics. He worked for the U.S. Government on the ICBM Submarine Missile Program and was the primary developer of the Nintendo game. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. "Gene" enjoyed watching Tennessee Vols football and loved the outdoors, hiking and going to the beach.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Simerly, and two sisters, Ada McKinney and Edith Peters.
    Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy Simerly, of the home, and a nephew, Earl McKinney, Elizabethton. Several cousins also survive.
    A graveside service to honor the life of Fletcher "Gene" Simerly will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be special friends, Patsy and Junior. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

    Lucille Guinn Collins, 85, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019, surrounded by her family. Lucille was born November 16, 1933 to the late Claude and Rachel Puckett Guinn. She attended Elizabethton High School, was a member of East River Park Christian Church and enjoyed spending time with her family.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Puckett, Mack Guinn and L.D. Guinn, and the father of her children, Billy Collins.
    Survivors include her two sons, Jackie Collins (Tami) and Bobby Collins (Connie), both of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren, Davey Collins (Tara), Dustin Collins (Lindsey), Jacquelyn Collins, Macy Collins, Brandon Collins (Brittany), Bryant Collins (Nikki), Bud Hicks and Chase Frye Austin (Katie); nine great-grandchildren, Tyler, Katlyn, Logan, Emmie, Aubrey, Ariana, Weston, Brylee and Oaklyn; five siblings, Pauline McKinney, Erma Stevens (Roy Forbes), Ed Guinn (Dean), Louise Whitehead (Carmon) and Rosie Lewis (Gordon); and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Puckett and Ruby Guinn.
    A service to honor the life of Lucille Guinn Collins will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Estel Williams and Pastor Doug Hinshaw officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the service, and at other times at the residence of her son, Bobby Collins. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery.     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Bob Nidiffer, and her second husband, Jack McKinney; a sister, Lucille Guinn Collins; and four brothers, Ed Guinn, L.D. Guinn, Mack Guinn and Thomas Puckett.
    Survivors include her sisters, Erma Stevens, Louise (Carmon) Whitehead and Rose (Gordon) Lewis; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Dean Guinn; and her special friends, Jim and Addie Hyder and Ford and Karen Julian.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Estel Williams and Pastor Mike Berry officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park.     Edward Guinn, 84, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, from the Johnson City Medical Center. Edward was born in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Claude and Rachel Puckett Guinn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Ownby, and his brothers, Tom (Audrey) Puckett, L.D. (Ruby) Guinn and Mack Guinn.
    Edward had worked in construction for various employers including the TPI Corporation for 10 years. He was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
    Those left to cherish Edward’s memory include his loving and devoted wife of 62-1/2 years, Eula ‘Dean’ Guinn, of the home; his son, Steve (Jannie) Guinn of Elizabethton; his granddaughters, Margo (Robert) Davenport of Knoxville, Tenn., Monica (Darien) Hamm of Bristol Tenn., and Megan Guinn of Knoxville, Tenn.; a great-granddaughter, Paisley Davenport of Knoxville, Tenn.; his sisters, Flo “Pauline” McKinney of Elizabethton, his twin sister, Erma Stevens of Elizabethton, Louise (Carmen) Whitehead of Elizabethton and Rose (Gordon) Lewis of Elizabethton; and his sisters-in-law, Pauline Ahrens of Elizabethton and Wanda Morgan of Martinsville, Va.     A service to celebrate the life of Edward Guinn will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 30, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Jeremy Burleson and Pastor Steve Burleson officiating.     ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Lewis "LD" Guinn, age 76, 313 East H Street, Elizabethton, TN passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Claude and Rachel Puckett Guinn. "LD" retired as a bread man from Flowers Bakery. After his retirement he worked as a funeral assistant with Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home for ten years. "LD" was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church, Elizabethton where he served as deacon. He was a great handyman and was known as Mr. Fix-it. "LD" loved his family and was an avid NASCAR fan. He especially enjoyed attending the Rod Runs in Pigeon Forge every year with his family.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Mack Guinn and by a half-brother, Tom Puckett. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Ruby Birchfield Guinn, of the home; a son, Randy Guinn and his fiancé Kristin Powell, of Elizabethton; a daughter, Julie Canter and her husband Westley, Jonesborough, TN; grandchildren, Stacey Guinn, Austin Guinn, Logan Guinn, Westley Canter Jr. and Mercedes Canter; several great-grandchildren and brothers and sisters, Lucille Owenby, Pauline McKinney, Erma Lee Stevens, Rose Lewis and her husband Gordon, Louise Whitehead and her husband Carmen and Ed Guinn and his wife Dean, all of Elizabethton.     Mr. Ledford was a retired superintendent with Kennametal, Johnson City. He attended West Side Christian Church and was a former Director of the Boys Club.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J.D. Ledford.
    Survivors include his wife, Barbara Scutt Ledford; two daughters, Karen Ledford and Donna Ledford, both of Elizabethton; two sons, Gary Ledford and wife Kate, Hickory, N.C., and Michael Ledford, Spartanburg, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Phyllis Malone, Johnson City, JoAnn Adams and Mary Alice Culler, both of Elizabethton; and a brother, Roger Ledford and wife Claudia, Elizabethton. Harlan was an employee of North American Rayon Corporation for 22 years and retired from the Carter County Landfill. He loved to paint cars and do mechanic work. His hobby was antique cars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Darrell, Junior and Tommy Guinn. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Janie Simerly Guinn; three children, Harlan “Toby” Guinn Jr. and wife Amber, Randy Lee Guinn and wife Heidi, and Shannon Guinn; two grandchildren, Zack Guinn and wife Bethany and Hannah Guinn; one brother, Eddie Guinn and wife Sandy; and his special four-legged friends, Chloe and Gritts. The family would like to express a special thank you to Jerry Ingram, Dean Stevens, Louis Honeycutt, Chris Clark, Bill Sheets and Charlotte Honeycutt for all the many things they have done for Harlan during his illness.     Loretta Whitehead McKinney, 66, of Roan Mountain, passed away at the Johnson City Medical Center after a sudden illness on Monday, March 3, 2014.
    McKinney was a Carter County native and the daughter of the late Charlie and Sarah Guinn Whitehead. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. She loved the Lord and had many special friends who previously served with her at Little Mountain Baptist Church of Roan Mountain and at Witt Baptist Church in Morristown.
    Nothing was more important to Mrs. McKinney than her family. She exemplified what it means to be a "Proverbs 31 woman." After marrying her husband Jim and moving to Morristown, her primary job was to be a full-time Mom to her two sons. For many years, she kept busy shuttling the boys to ballgames, bike races, 4-H fairs, clogging shows, karate lessons, and anything else that interested her sons at the time, while always doing her best to make sure that Jim came home to a clean house at night with supper on the table.
    When she wasn't busy with the boys, she worked at a variety of jobs in manufacturing, marketing, and sales. She and Jim moved back to Roan Mountain upon their retirement. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed making treats for them.
    Survivors include her husband, Jimmy McKinney, Roan Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Raquel McKinney, Piney Flats; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and April McKinney, Knoxville; five young grandchildren, Hunter, Lilly Kate, Rachael, Maggie, and Isla; a brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Louise Whitehead, Roan Mountain; a sister, Della Whitehead, Roan Mountain; a nephew, Chris Whitehead and wife Shannon Whitehead, Roan Mountain; and a niece, Laura Gorney and husband Charlie Gorney, Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
    Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain with the Rev. Garry Edwards and Rev. Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Calhoun-McKinney Cemetery. Music will be provided by Rev. Chris Hughes and Mrs JoNell Young, Organist. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the church at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday will be: Mike Blevins, Todd Markland, Johnny Markland, Larry Shell, Glen "Sonny" Burleson and Lynn Ellis.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donors favorite Charity. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain.
