MRS. SIDNEY E. PLEASANT
Mrs. Sidney E. Pleasant, 87, of Johnson City, died Friday morning, March 18, leaving 135 direct descendants. The funeral was held at Doe Valley Baptist Church Sunday, March 20, with Rev. Clarence Nelson and Rev. Hill Brumett officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers and granddaughters as flower bearers.
Survivors include three children, Mrs. Lula Kirby of Johnson City, Mrs. Rollie Blevins of Coal City, W.Va., and Dan Pleasant of Olympia, Washington; 45 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

BEN H. PLEASANT
Ben H. Pleasant was born Dec. 12,1888; died March 4, 1946. He professed faith in Christ in 1932, and belonged to the Doe Valley Baptist Church until his death. He was married to Hina[sic] Lowe on April 22, 1916. Mrs. Pleasant preceding him in death on March 2, 1930. To this union eight children were born; four having died in infancy.
Surviving are: Mrs. Doran Lowe, Mountain City; Mrs. Cecil Cornett, Kingsport; Charles of the navy and Estol of the army.
Mr. Pleasant was married to Belle Lowe in 1930, and she, too, preceded him in death, August 9, 1941. Four children were born to this union: Pansey and Roxie Pleasant and Bennie and Joe, all of Mountain City.
His aged mother, Mrs. Sidney Pleasant, Johnson City, survives; also three sisters, Mrs. R. A. Lee, Mountain City; Mrs. Sallie Blevins, Coal City, W.Va., and Mrs. Lula Kirby of Johnson City. Two brothers are left: Dan of Olympia, Wash., and Rance of Indiana.
A granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews are also left to mourn his passing.
The death angel has again visited and taken from his church and community a valuable member and citizen.

He worked as a carpenter for 50 years before retiring. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

The funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Lynn Valley Baptist Church, Elizabethton.

Burial followed the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hazel Branch, age 95, of Butler, TN passed away Monday, November 14, 2016 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Sam and Ethel Garland Stout. Hazel was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed canning, cooking, farming, gardening, reading her Bible and her church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bill T. Branch; one daughter: Lola Arnold; and four sons: Wayne, David, Bobby and Franklin.

Survivors include: four daughters: Shirley Wagner of Butler TN; Barbara Campbell and husband Earl of mountain City, TN; Brenda Garland and husband Danny of Butler, TN; and Nancy Guinn and husband Hearly of Mountain City, TN; one son: Blaine Branch of Butler TN; twenty-one grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Special friends Tootsie Roberts, Barry Pleasant and numerous other friends also survive.

A funeral service for Mrs. Branch will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2016 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. R.L. Poole, Rev. BUTLER - Mary L. Greer, age 81, of 489 Pine Orchard Road, Butler, TN, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2006, at the Watauga Medical Center. A native of Johnson County, she was born June 5, 1924, to the late Sam and Ethel Stout. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Greer; one son, Ricky Greer; one daughter, Patricia Dunn; two sisters, Chelsie Moody and Elsie Barr; and three brothers: Earl, Frank and Walter Stout. Mary was retired from Burlington Industries and loved quilting. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where she was a former secretary, choir member and treasurer. Survivors include two daughters: Wilma Moore, of Mountain City, Betty Potter, of Elizabethton, TN; one son, Junior Campbell, of Lenoir, NC; two sisters: Hazel Branch and Lona Cunningham, both of Butler, TN; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services for Mary Greer will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2006, from the chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with the Rev. R.L. Poole and the Rev. Frank Woods to officiate. A visitation will be held from 6 until 8:00 p.m., prior to the funeral service, at the funeral home. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2006, from the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. JOHNSON CITY - Comilla Stout "Connie" Holland, 80, of Johnson City passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a native of Johnson City and was a daughter of the late Haskiel Stout and Retha Stamper Stout Church. Mrs. Holland was a member of the Lone Oak Christian Church and had worked for Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Watauga Orthopedics. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step-father, Ernest Church; a sister, Kay Stout Miller; two brothers, James Glen Stout and LoKeal Earl Stout.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas H. "Tom" Holland; a daughter, Kim Holland Clark and husband, Russell; a grandson, Avery Clark; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for Mrs. Holland will be conducted at 10:00 AM Friday, January 12, 2018 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Tad Johnson officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends.

ELIZABETHTON - Dayton Ray Stout, age 71, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 5, 2023. Dayton was born in Elizabethton, a son of Rosa (Williams) Stout and the late Fred C. Stout. In addition to his father, Dayton was also preceded in death by two brothers, McKinley “Mack Foister Stout and Darrell Stout; one half-brother, Fred Stout, Jr.; and one half-sister, Lela Stout Hart.

Dayton was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and was a United States Army veteran having served in Vietnam. He retired from the United States Postal Service. He received many awards and received much recognition while in service in Vietnam.

Dayton had a wonderful sense of humor and loved motorcycle racing. He was known as a dare devil and loved all people and had compassion for everyone. In his spare time, Dayton enjoyed working on cars, running, reading books and collecting rocks.

Those left to remember and cherish his memory include two children: Amy Stout Arccado and husband Glen and Derek Ray Stout (Lori McKinley Stout); his grandchildren, Isaiah Andrew Stout and Elise Valerie Arccado; his brothers and sisters, Ron Stout, Shelby Mottern and Charlotte Caudill. Several nieces and nephews along with other family members also survive.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM on Monday, March 13, 2023 at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton.

A graveside service to honor the life of Dayton Ray Stout will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 13, 2023 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Dayton’s son, Derek, will provide a eulogy for his Dad. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Stout, Sonnie Mottern, Daniel Stout, Gary Hart and Shane Mann.

Ruth Rhymer, age 88, of 415 McElyea Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away at the Mountain City Care Center on Wednesday, April 6, 2005. A native of Johnson County, Tennessee, she was born on November 16, 1916 to the late Andy and Cora Dyson. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Willis Rhymer, who passed away in 1975; one daughter, Violet Rhymer Eller, who passed away in 2002; four sisters, Pauline Guy, Ruby Woods, Kitty Phillips and Shirley Blevins and two infant brothers. She loved quilting and embroidering. Ruth was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Ruth is survived by two sons, Burl Rhymer and wife Helen of Jessup, Maryland and Earl Rhymer of Mountain City; six grandchildren; Patsy Cullop, Tommy Rhymer, Bridgett Henson all of Mountain City, Michael Rhymer of Texas, Burley Rhymer and William Rhymer, both of Maryland; twelve great grandchildren; two brothers, Charlie Dyson and Andy Dyson, both of Mountain City and two sisters, Mary Woods and Katherine Dyson, both of Moutain City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Ruth will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005 from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Wills and Mr. Jim Hutchinson to officiate. Graveside Services and Interment will follow from the Donnelly Cenetery. Active Pallbearers will be: Ronda Reece, Bill Moore, Bud McComas, Clifford Woods, Charles Dyson and Harold Woods.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Phillips Dyson of the home; two daughters; Carol Gilley and Jody Farmer and husband Gale, all of Mountain City, TN,; two sons; Charles Dyson and wife Linda, Mountain City, TN; Daryl Dyson and wife Margie, Holden Beach, NC; two sisters; Mary Woods and Katherine Dyson, both of Mountain City, TN; one brother, Andy Dyson Jr., Mountain City, TN; Nine Grandchldren and Fourteen Great Grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services for Charlie A. Dyson will be held at 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2005, from the Hux-Tetrick funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Bentley and Rev. Bruce Simcox to officiate. Military Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005 from the Donnelly Cemetery and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Jamie Gilley, Junior Gilley, Charlie Dyson, Timmy Potter, Kenny Greer, and Ike Hewett.

Mayme Katherine Dyson, age 93, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 27, 2018. She was born on February 15, 1925 to the late Andy Dyson Sr. and Cora Lee Forrester Dyson. In addition to her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by sisters, Kitty Phillips, Ruth Rhymer, Shirley Blevins, Mary Woods, Ruby Woods and Pauline Guy and brothers, Norman Dyson, Karl Dyson, Charles Dyson and Andy Dyson Jr.

She was a member of First Baptist Church. Katherine was a simple woman and lived a simple life. She was a gifted quilter and had made many beautiful quilts through the years. She loved to help and bring joy to others.

Those left to cherish her memories include a nephew and special caregiver, Bobby Dyson; sister-in-law, Lucy Dyson; brother-in-law, Billy Joe Blevins; special neighbors include, Ruth Tilley, Patience Baird and Zeb Baird; many more nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Donnelly Cemetery (N. Church Street, Mountain City, TN) with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. Robert Andy Dyson Jr., age 86, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. He was born on May 12, 1927 to the late Andy Dyson Sr., and Cora Lee Forrester Dyson. In addition to his parents, Andy was preceded in death by his siblings, Charlie Dyson, Ruth Rhymer, Pauline Guy, Ruby Woods, Mary Woods, Shirley Blevins, Kitty Phillips and a nephew, who was like a son, Clifford Woods.
Andy was a member of First Baptist Church, where he had also served as Deacon and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Andy operated a sawmill for over 40 years and was also a farmer. He loved farming, raising tobacco, hay and beef cattle. He truly lived his life by the golden rule.
Andy was deeply loved by all who knew him and was simply and affectionately known by many as "Papaw D."
Andy is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Waters Dyson; son, Bobby Dyson and friend Dixie Widener; niece, who was like a daughter, Pat Woods; sister, Katherine Dyson; grandchildren; Ann Baker and husband Chris, Heather Dyson, Jimmy Woods, Bobby Jo Watson and husband David; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sister in law, Lucy Dyson; brothers in law, Bill Blevins and Vernon Waters; special friends; George, Janice and Angela Ashley; several nieces and nephews and many more special friends and neighbors.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Mountain City Funeral Home with Pastors Ricky Campbell, Norman Reece and Harry Wills to officiate. Special Music will be provided by Ricky and Millie Campbell.

PEARL RIVER, LA - Larry C. Tester, a longtime resident of Pearl River, LA, passed away on August 18, 2021 at the age of 75. He was a native of Johnson City, TN, born on August 13, 1946 to his loving parents, the late Bert Tester and Madge McCurry Tester. Larry is the brother of Albert Tester of Palm Bay, FL. and Carolyn Huffine of Jonesborough TN. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife of 46 years, Dr. Sarah A. Tester who passed in Dec. 2020.

Larry graduated from East Tennessee State University where he received a B.S. degree in Mathematics. Upon graduation, Larry served in the United States Army. After his service to his country, he worked for four different companies across the country including several years with BCBS in Chattanooga, TN. Larry retired from Ochsner Health Care in New Orleans as their Chief Security Officer.

After retirement, Larry enjoyed his membership with the Slidell Coffee Club and its many members, editor of neighborhood newsletter and volunteer work with various groups and organizations. He attended Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Slidell.

Mary McFarland, age 93, passed away on March 13, 2022. Mary was born on July 7, 1928 to the late Elsie Bare and Garfield Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Rhymer; second husband, William Bill McFarland; infant son, Joe Ray Rhymer; half-brother, Charles Rhymer and son-in-law, Paul Robinson.

Mary worked for 23 years at Mountain City Glove Factory. She was a wonderful homemaker who loved everyone and cherished her family. She loved her dog, Ben and enjoyed giving dogs snacks. She was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Elsie Maxine Robinson, Peggy Ann St. Gelais; sons, Dean Rhymer (Elizabeth Ann), Jerry Lynn Rhymer; half-brother, Glenn Rhymer (Grace); grandchildren, Deanna Rhymer, Michael Rhymer, Nicole Rhymer, Kimberly Rhymer, Jerry Rhymer Jr., David Scott Rhymer, Misty Ann St. Gelais Jordan; several great grandchildren and special friend, Linda South.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home with Pastors Richard Shephard and Berry Dunn officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the funeral service. The graveside service and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

BUTLER — Verda Graybeal, age 73, of Butler, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 8, 2016, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

She was born on November 20, 1942, daughter of the late Fred and Lona Stout Elliott.

In addition to her parents, Verda was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Graybeal, who passed March 11, 2010 and her sister, Betty Phillips.

Verda was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved visiting and spending time with neighbors and friends. Verda loved summertime, raising a vegetable garden and growing beautiful flowers. She was adored by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

Verda was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Her memory and life will be cherished by her husband and best friend, Bobby Graybeal; son, Tommy Tolley; brother, Earnest and Constance Elliott; sister, Mary Shepherd; step sister, Mary Jane Sexton and husband Joe; daughter-in-law and mother of Verda's grandchildren, Angie Perry Graybeal; grandchildren, Shonae Graybeal and Hunter Graybeal; nieces, Joni Shepherd, Lori Deloach and Gloria South; nephews, Marty Elliott and Barry Elliott; many more special nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 3 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at the Rock Springs Baptist Church with the service following at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Harvey White officiating.

Interment will follow in the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest by her son, Tim.

Judy Kay Wilson, age 64, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at her home. She was born June 1, 1954 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walter G. Stout and Thelma Lee Shoun Stout. In addition to her parents Judy was preceded in death one brother, James Earl "JimBo" Stout.

Judy loved her family and being with them. She loved her flowers and especially enjoyed going fishing. Judy was a faithful member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church where she was very active and supportive of the youth group.

Those left to share Judy's memory, in addition to her husband of 40 years, Donald E. Wilson, are her children, Mike Essick and wife Jessie, Theresa McElyea and husband Tony all of Mountain City, step- children, Michael Lee Wilson and wife Janet and Laura M. Slatton all of Knoxville, two brothers, Gary Stout of Lenoir, NC and Donald Shoun of Mountain City, grandchildren, Corey Essick and wife Anna and Jennifer Gardner and husband Cyrus, great- grandchildren, Kennedy Rose Essick, Tillian Reagan Essick, Clark Michael Gardner and Titus James Gardner, many nieces, nephews, cousins and her extended family.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday December 4, 2018 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Gary Hill and Richard Shepherd to officiate. It is with great sadness that the family of Norman Craig Pleasant announces his passing on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at his residence at the age of 62. Norman was born in Johnson County, Tennessee, on May 3, 1959. He was the son of the late Estel Pleasant and Loveta Shipley Pleasant. He was also proceeded in death by two brothers, Doug and Wendell Pleasant.
Norman was a carpenter, loved lawn work, being in the outdoors, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters; Priscilla Lowe (Matthew), Brittany Evans (Gary), three sisters; Mildred Eastridge (Joe), Sharon Merryman (Doug), and Jackie Thomas (Larry), a brother; Anthony Pleasant (Kathy), seven grandchildren; Brayden, Bryson, and Piper Lowe, Paislee, Violet, CoraLeigh, and Millie Evans, close friends; Angie Johnson and Cheryl Ann Lindsey, his one true love and the mother of his children; Tammy Cress Arnold. A graveside service for Norman will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at the Phillippi Cemetery with his Brother Anthony Pleasant to officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home and then go in procession for the graveside service.

Robert 'Bob' Dyson age 60, of Mountain City Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 10, 2018 at the Johnson County Community Hospital. He was born on June 23, 1958 to the late Andy Dyson Jr. and Helen Waters Dyson. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a special cousin, Clifford Woods.

Bob retired from General Electric of Greenville, SC. He grew up on a farm and had continued farming and helping others farm. He also enjoyed riding his four-wheeler and side-by-side.

He was a member of Bailey Lodge 146 F&AM of Greer, SC and First Baptist Church of Mountain City, TN.

Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He lived each day by the golden rule 'Do unto others as you would have others do unto you'. If there was anyone in need, Bob was always one of the first to help. He was always, always doing for others, not because anyone asked and not because he had to, but because it was the right thing to do.
