    Notes:

Note from John James Henry : John Carter was one of the first permanent white settlers in Tennessee in 1766. He opened a store at Carter's Station in Carter's valley (just west of Kingsport, TN). He and other settlers thought they were in Virginia but learned later that they were a little too far south and in land claimed by North Carolina. After Indians burned his store in 1768, he moved east to a safer region along the Watauga River. The area near his settlement later became Elizabethton, TN. He was a merchant, farmer, land agent (entry taker) and land speculator, who before his death in 1781 became the richest man in North Carolina, though his home is now in Tennessee. A gentleman educated in England, John greatly loved wandering in the wilderness and often went on long hunting trips into uncharted territory, taking along his overseer as guide and companion. It was on these trips that he saw much of the land and was able to acquire the choice property (cheap) for resale to later settlers at significant profit. John was principal Author of the Articles of the Watauga Association (the first Constitution of a self governing body in America) and served on the committee which drafted North Carolina's first State Constitution, He served as a Colonel in the NC Militia during the American Revolution and Commanded the defense of the Watauga Settlements against a British incited raid by the Cherokees in 1778. He trained the troops used by Col. John Sevier in the battles he won against British Gen. Howe in North and South Carolina.

John married Mary (Carter) about 1755 in Lancaster County, , , Virginia. Mary was born before 1735 in Lancaster County, , , Virginia; died in 1758 in Lancaster County, , , Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 6

  1. 30.  Landon C. Carter Descendancy chart to this point (26.John5, 11.John4, 10.Robert3, 8.Sarah2, 1.Phyllis1) was born about 1756 in Lancaster County, , , Virginia; died in 1801 in Elizabethton, , Carter County, Tennessee; was buried in 1801 in Elizabethton, , , Tennessee.

    Notes:

Note from John James Henry : Landon CARTER, along with his Father, John CARTER, and William BEAN were the first permanent English settlers in Tennessee in 1766. On his grave, near the Carter Mansion, the DAR has placed a marker listing his birth as 1760. However, tradition has it that he was ten years old when his father founded Carter's Station in 1766 so I list his birth as 1756. THe earlier birth date is also supported by the fact that Landon signed the petition asking North Carolina to approve The Washington District in 1773, and by NC law (which his father was well aware of) you had to be at least 16 to sign a petition. The petition was approved by the Whig Legislature in 1776. The Carters first settled in Carters Valley (just west of Kingsport, TN) and later moved near Watauga Old Fields (a deserted Indian Town) on the Watauga River, near present day Elizabethton. Prime movers in the establishment of the Watauga Association (which had the first written constitution in America), John and Landon were influential in the Constitutions and founding of the Washington District of North Carolina in 1776, the State of Franklin (1786) and the State of Tennessee in 1796. Carter County is named for John and Elizabethton is named for Landon's wife, Elizabeth (MACLIN) CARTER. Landon was a Major in the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution, serving under Colonel John Sevier, who later as Governor of Tennessee (1796) made him General in charge of the Tennessee Militia. The 1830 Census for Carter Co., TN lists Alfred M. Carter, George Carter and William B. carter as heads of households. These are undoubtedly Three of Landon's sons. No mention is made of John Maclin Carter, but the following are listed William Carter age 40-49 (5), William Carter age 30-39 (10), and Thomas Carter age 30-39 (4), all of which had households (number of members in the parenthesis). These are possibly descendants of Landon's half brothers, John and Emanuel. The 1840 Census Shows Landon's sons A. M. Carter and William B. Carter as well as the older William (4) listed in 1830 and two of Alfred Moore Carter's sons but not George, nor the Thomas or younger William above.

Landon married Elizabeth Maclin on 3 Feb 1784 in , Brunswick County, Virginia Colony, . Elizabeth (daughter of Judge William Maclin, II and Sarah Slack) was born on 9 Jul 1765 in , Brunswick County, Virginia Colony, ; died on 27 Feb 1842 in Elizabethton, , Carter County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 31.  John Carter Descendancy chart to this point (26.John5, 11.John4, 10.Robert3, 8.Sarah2, 1.Phyllis1) was born about 1762 in Rockbridge County, , , Virginia; died after 1812 in Carter County, , , Tennessee.

    Notes:

In 1812, John swore that he had assisted his father as entry taker and verified the accuracy of a number of North Carolina land grants which were being registered to establish land ownership in the State of Tennessee. To have legally assisted his father he would have to have been at least 16, and the earliest land grant he testified to was in 1778, which would put his birth date at 1762 or earlier.

  3. 32.  Emanuel Carter Descendancy chart to this point (26.John5, 11.John4, 10.Robert3, 8.Sarah2, 1.Phyllis1) was born about 1764 in Rockbridge County, , , Virginia; died after 1796 in Greene County, , , Tennessee.

    Notes:

Susan Carter was named as executrix in John Carter's Will. She was only 16 years old and not married yet but records show that she served as his executrix. There are no further records of her, so we don't know when she died or who she married.

In the name of God Amen. I, Alfred M. Carter, of the County of Carter, and State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and memory, but weak of body; knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and appoint this my last will and Testament.

Rhea to receive one sixth part of my Estate, after
the debts I owe have been discharged.
    4. I desire that at the final division of my estate, (that is, after the decease of my wife); all my slaves shall form a portion of the property that shall fall to the lot of Samuel P. Notes:

Samuel Perry (he changed his middle name to Powhatan) CARTER was born in Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee on 6 August 1819. Carter County was named after his grandfather, Landon CARTER, and Elizabethton was named after his grandmother, Elizabeth McLin CARTER. The CARTERs were probably the richest family in the Northeastern corner of Tennessee during the early 1800's. They had accumulated large land holdings, and operated several iron forges. Samuel was well educated, having attended Duffield Academy, Washington College in Limestone, TN, Princeton University, and graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. He served aboard the U.S.S. Ohio, and saw combat action in the war with Mexico in 1846. Following the war, he returned to Annapolis where he was an instructor. Between 1855 and 1857, he was again at sea and saw action on the China coast. In 1857, he returned to the Naval Academy as an instructor of seamanship. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Samuel was assigned to the War Department, and given the task of returning to Northeastern Tennessee and organizing forces among the mostly Union sympathetic population. He led forces which captured Cumberland Gap in 1862, destroyed 100 miles of railroad tracks, and in 1863, commanded the Kentucky Division which defeated Morgan one day and Smith the next. Recognized for his combat leadership, he advanced in rank throughout the war and was a Major General by war's end. After the war, he returned tothe Naval Academy where he was the Commandant between 1869-1872. In 1882, he was promoted to Rear Admiral, making him the only U.S. military officer to have held the rank of Army General and Navy Admiral. Samuel died on 26 May 1891, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Samuel's father, Alfred Moore Carter, and grandfather, Landon Carter, also have interesting stories. But instead, let me jump to his great grandfather, John Carter. John was a very wealthy merchantand fur trader. He left Virginia in about 1770 and set up an indian trading post near present day Rogersville, Tennessee. He may have stayed in that location, but the Shawnees robbed and destroyed the post. He moved to the Watauga Settlement near Sycamore Shoals on the Watauga River in what is now Carter County. He was a signer of the Watauga Association in 1772, which provided for self rule four years before the thirteen colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. He held several important postions in Watauga, and was later chairman of the courts in Washington District and Washington County, North Carolina (all of eastern Tennessee). In about 1780, he and his son Landon built a mansion using hand hewn timbers, and installed what is believed to be the first glass windows in the region. John died shortly after the mansion was completed, and may have been the wealthiest man in North Carolina. His descendants were instrumental in the formationof Tennessee in 1796, and two of his great great grandsons became govenors of the State.

    Colonel James Patton Taylor Carter
    (1822 - 1869)

    by Dave Mathews

If nothing else, Colonel James P. T. Carter could boast a rich and prominent family history. His great-grandfather, Colonel John Carter, was born in Virginia in 1737 and first married Elizabeth Taylor. Landon Carter, the only child of John and Elizabeth Carter, was born January 29, 1760 but Elizabeth died during his birth. John then married a woman named Susan and established a trading post near present day Rogersville, Tennessee as early as 1769. He soon settled in the nearby Watauga area and became a prominent and wealthy settler. The original Colonel John Carter died in Washington County, Tennessee in 1781.
Landon Carter, son of John and Elizabeth, also became known as Colonel Carter. He was active in the Revolutionary War and politics in general. Landon Carter was educated at Davidson College and married Elizabeth Maclin in 1784. Carter County, Tennessee was named after Landon Carter and the county seat of Carter County, Elizabethton, was named after Landon's wife. Landon and Elizabeth Carter had seven children. Landon Carter died in June, 1800.
Their oldest child, Alfred Moore Carter, was born in 1784 and died in 1850. Alfred Carter became a prosperous iron manufacturer of Carter County. He first married Matilda M. Wendell in 1810, but she died in 1816. In 1818 he married a Virginian named Evalina Belmont Perry. The youngest child of Alfred and Evalina, James Patton Taylor Carter, was named after James Patton Taylor, the husband of Alfred's sister Mary Cocke (Carter) Taylor.
James Patton Taylor Carter, son of Alfred and Evalina Carter and Colonel of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry, was born July 30, 1822 in or near Elizabethton in Carter County. James joined his father in the iron business and eventually assumed control of it in 1850 when his father died. James Carter married twice. He first married Margaretta Dunn of Rogersville, Tennessee in Carter County on August 5, 1851. James and Margaret had only one child, William A. Carter born in 1853. James married second to Margaret Letcher of Lexington, Kentucky. James and Margaret Letcher Carter had no children. Margaret Letcher has been erroneously identified as a daughter of the former Kentucky governor who was actually childless, but she may have been a relative.
Although James Carter was a Whig, he did not formally engage much in politics. However, when East Tennesseans met at Knoxville on May 30 and 31, 1861 to discuss secession, Carter was one of five delegates chosen to represent Carter County. Carter was firmly against secession, as were the majority of East Tennesseans, and he became a champion of the Union cause. The Knoxville meeting was futile because on June 8, 1861 Tennessee voted to join the Confederacy. Carter closely aligned himself with the senator from Tennessee and future president, Andrew Johnson.
A discussion of James Carter must include mention of his two prominent older brothers, Samuel Powhatton Carter and William Blount Carter. Samuel, oldest son of Alfred and Evalina Carter, was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He became the only man in history to hold the rank of both Rear Admiral in the Navy and Brevet Major General in the Army. Reverend William Blount Carter, another son of Alfred and Evalina, was a graduate of Princeton University and a Presbyterian minister. All three Carter brothers were very active in the Civil War in East Tennessee.
Samuel P. Carter was responsible for organizing United States troops in southeastern Kentucky during the summer and fall of 1861. In August he appointed his brother, James P. T. Carter, as Colonel and commanding officer of the 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry regiment. An historical review of James Carter's service as Colonel of the regiment is dubious. The appointment was outright nepotism. He certainly had no military credentials.
James Carter also had a reputation of being both difficult and often absent from duty. H. Carlisle, an examiner for the U.S. Pension Board, wrote a report dated August 9, 1886 to the Commissioner of Pensions regarding an investigation of Chaplain William Lowery. Carlisle had this to say about Carter, "In the absence of Colonel Carter (who was declared by Military Governor Andrew Johnson to be a "damned fool") these officers permitted claimant to go when and where he pleased. It is declared by Major Carpenter, and it is well known to many now living, that Colonel Carter himself was constantly absent from his regiment, which, in battles and on marches, was commanded by Lieut-Col Melton. It is notorious that Col. Melton was in command at the battle of Murfreesboro where this regiment was engaged." It is true that Carter was not in command at either Stones River (Murfreesboro) or Rogersville, the regiment's two major engagements. Melton was also in command of the regiment due to Carter's absence during the pursuit of John Hunt Morgan in July, 1863, but we do not know why Carter was not there.
That is not to say that Carter's service with the 2nd Tennessee did not have upsides. During most of 1863 he was commanding at the brigade level, and during Carter's leave of absence on November 3, 1863 Burnside's office issued a field order assigning Carter to command the Second Division of the 23rd Army Corps. When Carter did have field command during military action, he seemed to give a good account of himself. In his report in The Official Records regarding the engagement with Pegram on June 9, 1863 at Monticello, Colonel August Katz had this to say, "Colonel Carter had, however, arrived with six companies of the Second Tennessee, and this timely arrival enabled us finally to repulse the enemy. My heartiest thanks are due to Colonel Carter for his aid and assistance. He generously waived his rank, and permitted me to control and direct the troops during the engagement." The following month Colonel W. P. Sanders also thanked Carter for his performance during Sanders' Raid on July 29, 1863. Colonel Carter again distinguished himself at the Battle of Blue Springs on October 10, 1863, an important Union victory.
After the war, Carter was impoverished and in poor health. He sought and obtained another political appointment. Although bitter for not being able to land something better, Carter accepted an appointment as Secretary of the Territory of Arizona. After a long and difficult trip, he arrived with his family at Prescott, Arizona on September 3, 1866. During the next several years they spent part of the time in Prescott and part of the time in Tucson. Carter's term as Secretary was also controversial, mainly because he commuted the death sentence of convicted murderess Dolores Moore to a sentence of life in prison. At that time, he was serving as the Acting Governor of Arizona. In retrospect, the decision to grant clemency was courageous and probably the right thing to do. Both the prosecuting attorney and sheriff involved in the case supported the commutation. However, the general public in Arizona was infuriated. Because of that unpopular decision, as well as other reasons, Carter was not able to secure the formal appointment as governor that he wanted. By April, 1869 he was no longer a public official and once again a citizen.
Instead of returning to Tennessee, James Carter stayed in the Arizona area and invested in a business. He bought two thirds interest in a flour mill at Altar in Sonora, Mexico. In July, 1869 he left Tucson to stay for awhile near his business in Mexico, but he never returned. Only 47 years old, he died September 29, 1869 of illness at Rancho San Francisco, Mexico between Cabroca and Puerto Libertad. It is difficult to name the exact cause of death. He probably died of malaria or some other chronic illness picked up while in Panama. Injuries sustained in a buggy accident shortly before his death may have been a contributing factor. However, referring to his premature death, the Tucson Weekly Arizonian on October 9, 1869 noted that service incurred illness had ended his life. After his death, the family of James Carter returned to the Carter County, Tennessee area where a few of his descendants still live.

    Notes:

Stewart Renfro, who shot and killed his brother-in-law, Orb Salyer, at Elizabethton, surrendered yesterday morning at 5 o'clock to Sheriff Collins, of Carter County. He had not left his premises, it was learned after he gave himself up, but immediately after the shooting went to the barn in the rear of his home, remaining there until after daylight.

Soon after the coroner's jury had returned a verdict that Salyer had been shot through the head and killed by a discharge from a shotgun in the hands of Renfro, the latter was given a prelimary hearing before Magistrate D.S. Jenkins. He was bound over to the September term of court, but was released in $2,000 bail.

The tragedy occurred at Renfro's home. Orb Salyer, 22 years old, and a brother were visiting their sister, Renfro's wife. According to the reports of the killing, Renfro, who is 40 years old, came home intoxicated. The Salyer boys tried, it is said, to take him to his room. Renfro resisted their efforts, and it is further stated, became infuriated at them, seizing a shotgun and firing it at Orb, who fell to the floor dead. He then, it is said, pointed the gun at the other brother, but the gun failed to discharge.

When the Salyer brothers left home Monday morning to visit their sister in Elizabethton, they were accompanied by their father, who was preparing to make a business trip to West Virginia. The father of the boys, it is said, had a premonition in a dream of the fate that awaited one of his sons.

"Be careful, boys", he is reported to have said to his sons, after relating a dream which he had the night before and in which, it is said, he saw his sons fighting, one evidently trying to kill the other. The elder Salyer was in West Virginia when he received news of the tragedy.

•Funeral services for Orb Salyer, the young man who was shot through the head and killed at Elizabethton Monday night by his brother-in-law, Stewart Renfro, were held this morning from the home of his brother, W.C. Salyer. The body was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

    Notes:

    Buried:
James Stanley Barlow, Jr. (“Stanley”), 96, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2021, with Nell, his wife of 69 years, holding his hand. Stanley was born in August 1924 in Johnson City, Tennessee, the youngest of five children and the only son. His father, an attorney, died three months later, and Stanley often remarked, “I grew up in a house full of women.” As a boy, Stanley published and sold his own newspaper, giving early expression to what became lifelong interests in writing and politics. Other enduring loves were music and acting. While in sixth grade at North Side Elementary School, Stanley performed in the title role of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. He listened regularly to Texaco’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera on the radio, a new technology in his boyhood. At Science Hill High School, he was president of the debate team, played trumpet in the JROTC band, and received the best actor award for the senior play.

Stanley’s college education was interrupted by World War II, in which he served as a navigation officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces, flying on transport missions carrying military supplies and personnel around the world. After graduating from Wheaton College with a B.A. in history in 1947, Stanley earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1950. At seminary, Stanley was the senior class president, sang and traveled with the Seminary Choir, and on weekends served as student pastor for the Palisades Presbyterian Church in Palisades, New York, a church he remained lovingly connected with for the rest of his life. Stanley was also awarded the Robinson Fellowship, a grant for post-graduate study, which he postponed using for a few years, wishing first to gain more practical work experience.

Returning to his family home in Johnson City, Stanley was ordained as a Presbyterian minister and became Assistant Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. During this tenure, he wooed and wed Nell Still, a home economics major at East Tennessee State University and a daughter of the managing agent of the local F.B.I. office. The newlyweds soon moved to Alabama, where Stanley served two interim pastorates, and then embarked for two years in Scotland, where Stanley used the Robinson Fellowship to earn a Ph.D. in comparative religion at the University of Saint Andrews. After returning to the United States, Stanley worked as a university pastor in Oregon and Pennsylvania, spent a leave of absence studying at Harvard Divinity School, and became increasingly drawn to the field of higher education. Although he remained a faithful cleric throughout his life, his interests ultimately led him to become a professor of philosophy and an administrator, first at the University of Minnesota, then at Columbia University, and finally at the City University of New York.

Stanley and Nell raised two daughters and two sons. In 1966 the family settled into the small suburban town of Leonia, New Jersey, with Stanley commuting into the big city of New York for the rest of his career. Stanley loved Leonia and their large, old house there, which allowed him a third-floor study full of books and music. He was elected to the Leonia Borough Council that governed the town and acted in plays produced by the Leonia Players Guild, the oldest amateur theater company in New Jersey. He participated in poetry study groups at the Leonia Public Library and read annually at “Leonia Reads,” a forum for local writers. He occasionally “supplied the pulpit” (i.e., substituted when the minister was away) at both the Presbyterian Church in Leonia and the Palisades Presbyterian Church. Along with Nell, Stanley made sure his children had plenty of "family fun" while growing up, including camping trips, jumping the waves at the Long Island beaches, and evenings of charades and other games. For decades he swam late afternoon laps most summer days at the Leonia Municipal Pool, which inspired one of his poems (and book titles), Swimming Laps in August.

After retiring in 1995, Stanley and Nell spent most winters in Bradenton, Florida, where two of Stanley’s sisters and his mother had come to live. He wrote poetry and in other genres and enjoyed swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2009 Stanley and Nell moved from Leonia to The Forest at Duke, a continuing care community in Durham, North Carolina. There Stanley participated in drama and poetry readings, choral performances, and other special interest groups, as well as seated volleyball games, which he continued to play even after becoming wheelchair-bound.

Stanley loved jokes, puns, and anecdotes, readily adopting Scottish, hillbilly, and other accents in conversation with relatives and friends. He enjoyed saying hello, and never liked to be rushed. His family is grateful for his longevity and will miss his hearty laugh, sharp intellect, vibrant voice, and passion for life. In addition to Nell, Stanley is survived by his children -- Susan (DuBois) of Tucson, Arizona, Jim of Santa Monica, California, David of Arlington, Massachusetts, and Ann (Pointer) of Tampa, Florida -- nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service for Stanley will be held on June 26, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel at the First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City, Tennessee, to be followed immediately by a committal service at Oak Hill Cemetery.
