Mrs. Mary White, 80, died at her home near Carter Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock as results of a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held this morning at 8 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Breeke Ritchie with the Rev. Kilgore officiating. Interment followed in the Ritchie cemetery.
The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Rose Nidiffer, Mrs. Bob Ensor, and Mrs. Dan Colbough, all of Carter county; four sons, John, Will, Ben and Sexton White, also of this county.

Lela Ensor Bailey, 95, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Jessie White Ensor. Mrs. Bailey was a graduate of Unaka High School, East Tennessee State College and received her Master's of Education from Oklahoma State University. Her career in teaching started at Midway Elementary School on Stoney Creek. She moved to Louisville, Ky., where she taught school in Jefferson County for over 20 years. She returned to Stoney Creek 30 years ago. She was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Bailey; five sisters, Amelia Nidiffer, Mary "Poll" Ensor, Tilda Grindstaff, Dorothy "Dot" Kress and Ruth Garrison; and five brothers, John, Dan, Ben, Cecil and Jim Ensor. Survivors include a son, George Robert Bailey and wife Porter Watkins, Louisville, Ky.; a step-son, Kenneth Bailey, Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Lela Ensor Bailey will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, February 22, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eric Heaton officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, in the Ensor Cemetery. DEATH TAKES ELMER WHITE
Elmer White, 26, who was injured August 25 in an automobile accident near Butler, died in a local hospital Tuesday afternoon as the result of the injuries. White who was married, suffered tetanus, or lockjaw.
He resided on the Watauga river, rural route one, and was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted from the Dungan Chapel this afternoon at two o'clock, with the Rev. E. R. Kilgore officiating. Burial was made in the Ensor Cemetery. During the earlier part of his life, he lived eight years at the R. M. Ensor home.
Survivors are his widow, and one son, Earl White; father, Ben White; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bowling and Miss Helen White; four brothers, J. N., Paul, Georgia[sic], and Sef White.

GEORGE WHITE
George White, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben White, died this morning at his home on the Johnson City highway.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at three o'clock with the Rev. Huston Blevins officiating. Interment was in the Taylor Cemetery.
Survivors of the child are the parents; one brother, Tom White; two sisters, May and Helen White; three half-sisters, Jean, Eula and Charlotte White; and three half-brothers, James, Pal and Seth White.

Laura Annice Campbell Price passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Shannondale Independent Living in Maryville, Tennessee.

She was 96 years old, having been born on February 5, 1922, on Stoney Creek in Carter County Tennessee. She was the last living child of six children of William Ballard White and Flora Rains White. Annice married Thomas Price after Clinton died.

In 1940 she married Clinton Campbell, who died in March 1973. All three of Ann and Clinton's children are living. They, with spouses, are Donna Gale and LCDR William Rollinson, USN retired, of Maryville; Capt Darrell W. Campbell (Bud), USN, retired, and Mary Ann of Warrenton Virginia; and Capt James L. Campbell, USN, retired, and Carol of Maryville; a stepdaughter, Lauranne Vallone and husband John, of Medford, NY; a stepson, Tommy Price and wife Patricia, of Johnson City, TN; eight grandchildren and was very proud of each of them and every one of her 19 great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Clinton, Annice and Tom were all members and close friends from the Unaka High School class of 1940. She had a positive, "can do" outlook and was always a leader in church, school and community. Annice was a member of the Poplar Grove Baptist Church before moving her membership to First Baptist of Elizabethton after she and Tom moved to town. At Poplar Grove, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, directed scores of Christmas pageants and either directed or helped with nearly every Vacation Bible School while her children were growing up. She and Tom continued to dedicate time, talent and resources to Poplar Grove and First Baptist before she moved to Maryville after Tom died. Late in her life, Ann grew to love Tennessee Lady Vols basketball and never missed watching them on TV. She frequently noted that she had played basketball for Unaka High. Throughout her life she was actively and unequivocally supportive of each member of her family, never missing a chance to share her pride in their lives and accomplishments. As a friend to many, she was quietly steadfast in her support and help when it was needed. She will be missed for all the right reasons.

A service to celebrate the life of Laura Annice Campbell Price will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 4, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family will receive friends from NOON until 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will follow at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons and friends.

COLUMBIA - Georgia Mae Ritchie Hyder, of Columbia, died on Monday, August 23, 2021. Born November 11, 1929, in Elizabethton TN, she was a daughter of the late Andrew “Andy” and Cordia Nidiffer Ritchie. Ms. Georgia graduated from Unaka High School and Steed college. She went on to work at Bemberg Industrial where she met her future husband, Clyde Hyder. They married on June 9, 1951 and as a military family, they lived in Fort Drum, NY, Fort Sill, OK, Schofield Barracks/Fort Shaffer, Honolulu, HI, Fort Sam, San Antonio, TX and Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. After decorated service in Korea and Vietnam, and achieving rank of Command Sergeant Major, Clyde passed away in July 1994.

A member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, Ms. Georgia retired from Fort Jackson on February 3, 1995, where she worked in civil service. On January 2, 1967, she was initiated and became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Fort Jackson Chapter 253, where she held many positions and at one time served as Worthy Matron.

Ms. Georgia was a lifelong sports fan who watched her nephew play basketball at University of Tennessee, to never missing her son‘s basketball or baseball games from the age of seven years old through high school. As an avid Gamecock fan, later in life she attended many football games with her friend/companion Jack Beamon. She and Jack enjoyed many evenings dancing at the senior center and traveling the south together. She loved watching all sports, especially women’s and men’s basketball and her beloved South Carolina Gamecocks. She also enjoyed attending Atlanta Braves games and after Jack’s passing, she never missed a Braves game on TV.

Aside from sports, she loved spending time with her family. She always looked forward to the many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at Joni‘s or Tracy‘s house that also included watching sports under warm blankets by the fire.

Survivors include two children, Jill Long (LeMont) and Brett Hyder (Joni) all of Columbia, South Carolina; two granddaughters, Sheryl Long and Renee Coe (Keith); six great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, sister, Anna Ruth Cole; brother, Lawrence Ritchie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service for Mrs. Hyder will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Elizabethton, TN, with Mr. Scott Fisher, Minister officiating.. Burial will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

UNICOI - George A. Ritchie, age 84, Unicoi, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a son of the late John K. and Hattie Love Ritchie.

George was born and raised in Stoney Creek but had lived in Unicoi most of his life. He was a 1955 graduate of Unaka High School where he played basketball and was known as Mr. Unaka or Hopper. He also attended Milligan College where he was the high jump champion. George was in US Army Reserves attending boot camp in Fort Jackson, SC.

George retired from Flav-O-Rich Dairy after thirty years of service. He was a member of the Unicoi Masonic Lodge # 681, Unicoi Shrine Club, Unicoi Ruritan Club, Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society, and served as the election commissioner in Unicoi for many years. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play ball and was known to many as “Daddy George”.

George was a faithful member of Unicoi United Methodist Church where he belonged to the New Beginnings Sunday School Class and sang in the choir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Bill, Gebe, and Gene Ritchie; two sisters: Mary Lou Scott and Linda Littleton.

George leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Nancy Seward Ritchie; two daughters: Ronda Simpson and husband, Rob, Sharon Slagle and husband, Donnie; three grandchildren: Connor Simpson, Clay Simpson, Lucas Slagle; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Randall and Gail Seward, Joann Ritchie; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Ernest "Gebe" Ritchie, 74, of 1543 Highway 91, Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was a son of the late John and Hattie Love Ritchie and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Ritchie and Gene Ritchie; two sisters, Mary Lou Scott and Linda Littleton.
Mr. Ritchie was a member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church and attended New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Summers-Taylor as a truck driver and had previously driven for Mason Dixon, ETW&C, and Beaunit. He was also a former bus driver with the Carter County School System.
For forty years, he was known as one of the best auctioneers in the area, having graduated from the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering, High Point, NC, in November 1969.
Mr. Ritchie was a United States Army veteran, having proudly served during the Vietnam Era. He spent many years with the Carter County Honor Guard and was a member of the American Legion Post #49, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Ritchie was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad and served fourteen years on the Carter County Board of Education and was presently serving on the Carter County Commission at the time of his death.
Mr. Ritchie is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Lynice Williams Ritchie, of the home; one son, Doug Stevens and wife, Carrie, Elizabethton; two daughters, Wendy Sams and husband, Wayne, Elizabethton, Jenny Lockett and husband, Jerry, Water Park Fla.; three grandchildren, Josh Sams and wife, Brooke, Laikyn Stevens and J. Allen Lockett; one great-granddaughter, Emma Nichole Sams; one brother, George Ritchie and wife, Nancy.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 PM on Sunday, October 13, 2013, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Rev. Eric Heaton officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Kenny Greer and Mr. Dennis Laws.

Mrs. Nellie J. Lewis, age 93, of Peters Hollow Road in Elizabethton went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 25, 2022 at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Nellie was born May 5, 1928 in Elizabethton to the late Charles and Mary Blanche Ritchie White. In addition to her parents, Nellie was also preceded in death by her husband, Campbell H. (Herman) Lewis; and four brothers, Arlie White, Stewart White, Hubert White and Jerry White.
Nellie was a homemaker and loved taking care of her home and her family. She was a graduate of Unaka High School and was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Nellie will be missed by all that knew her.

ELIZABETHTON - Lillie Belle Colbaugh Rambo, 86, Elizabethton , peacefully went home to be with the Lord, Sunday October 1, 2017 at the Hillview Health Center.

A native of Carter County, she was the last surviving child of the late Henry & Crecy Peters Colbaugh and lived her entire life in the Carter Community. Lillie Belle was a graduate of Unaka High School and was a lifetime member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years: C.W. Rambo, a daughter: Pamela Rambo Hicks, four brothers: Luther, Arthur, Kelsie and Herbert Colbaugh and a sister: Margaret Hardin. She was loved by everyone one that knew her.

Survivors include her daughter: Paula Rambo, Unicoi, her son and daughter-in-law: Perry and Debra Rambo, Elizabethton. Her son-in-law: Bill Hicks of Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - Floyd D. (Todd) Lowe, 82, Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at his residence.

A native of Carter County he was a son of the late John & Mary Peters Lowe. Floyd was a 1954 graduate of Unaka High School. He served in the United States Air Force for three and one-half years. He retired from Raytheon Corporation in 1993 after 36 years of service. He was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church sense 1964, served on the Deacon Board and was Choir Director. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Ralph, Bill and Harold Lowe and one sister: Beatrice Lockner.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years: Mary Ann Mercer Lowe. A daughter and son-in-law: Vivian Ruth & Daniel Wood, Piney Flats. One sister: Florence Belt, Welcome, North Carolina. One brother: Lloyd Lowe and wife Sue of Elizabethton. His special Honorary grandchildren: Cooper and Taylor Shanks and Sydney Markland. Several nieces & nephews. Lloyd Philip Lowe, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023, at Hillview Health Center following an extended illness. He was born on June 23, 1939 to the late John and Mary Peters Lowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers, sisters and nephews. Mr. Lowe was a 1957 graduate of Unaka High School. He attended Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church his entire life. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Lloyd retired from Holston Ordinance & Eastman Chemical Company after 30 years of service. After his retirement, he worked as a courier for 10 years at Citizens Bank. Prior to his illness, Mr. Lowe enjoyed walking the trail at Sycamore Shoals and in later years watching sports on TV with his beloved grandson. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Sue Lowe; a daughter, Mary Lowe Harrell; a special grandson, Noah Evan Harrell; and a special great-niece, Jennifer Morrell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, cousins and friends. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Kenny Lethcoe officiating.

Clifford Loyal Peters, 80, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 in the Signature Health Care of Elizabethton.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Buster & Maggie Pearl Peters.

Clifford retired from AFG. He served in the Stoney Creek Fire Department for 40 years. He was the first fire Chief and he was the fire chief for 30 years. Clifford was a Trustee of the Blevins Cemetery. He was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church..

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Jack Peters.

Survivors include two daughters: Cindy Peters Sturgill and Christy Peters Petit & special son-in-law, Scott. Five Grandchildren. Ethan Sturgill, Adam Chase Sturgill, Matthew Poole, Tristan Petit and Makenzie Petit. One Great granddaughter: December Poole. Harry Houston “Bud” White of Lawrenceville, Ga., passed away on April 26, 2021 in Buford, Ga. Harry was a native of Carter County. His parents were Dan and Ollie White of Stoney Creek.
Harry graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1948, and entered the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight radio operator during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and became a telecommunications engineer. He married Jean (Barnes) White, also of Elizabethton, and spent most of the remainder of his life in the Atlanta area. After retiring from the telecommunications industry, Harry joined Admissions and Guest Services at Dollywood Theme Park (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), where he worked for an additional 18 years before “retiring” again.
Harry was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, where he became a 32nd-degree Mason. He served as a Deacon at Mount Carmel Christian Church, Stone Mountain, Ga., for a number of years. He loved reading about the Old West, and made several trips to his favorite place: Yellowstone National Park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, and is survived by his two children, Dr. Richard E. White and Sandra J. White, both of Dacula, Ga.; two grandchildren, Gina M. White, Augusta, Ga., and Daniel R. White, Dacula, Ga.; and a sister, Hazel Truman Hester, Lake Mary, Fla.
The graveside service and entombment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, April 30, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Greg Key, minister, officiating.

A native of Carter County she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Kress Ensor. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and she was a member of Dungan's Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Clark Davis; a brother, Ivan Ensor; a sister, Moilee Lewis and a half-brother, Ebbie Kress. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Kress Ensor. She was a retired school teacher. Mrs Bishop was a 1948 graduate of Unaka High School and received a BS Degree in Elementary Education from Milligan College. She had taught at Unaka Elementary, Buladean Elementary and Midway Elementary Schools. She was a member of the Carter County Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Chalmer Bishop, two sisters: Velma Davis and Moilee Lewis and three brothers: Elbert Kress, Robert and Ivan Ensor.

Survivors include a daughter & son-in-law: Dinah & Richard Babb, Elizabethton. Two Grandchildren: Amanda Estep and husband Rickey, James Babb and wife Ashley. One Great Grandson: Clayton Estep. Aubrey Frank Ensor, 88, Elizabethton, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, December 17, 2019. He was born September 06, 1931, to John and Mary Kress Ensor, Elizabethton, Tennessee, where he grew up. He served in the United States Army in the Korean War Conflict. He was retired from Tri-State Container. He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish, hunt, and watch sports.

He was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church where he loved his Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Ida Connelly, Velma Davis, Rob Ensor, Ivan Ensor, Moilee Lewis, Ella Mae Bishop, and Glen Ensor. He is survived by a brother Dennie Ensor and sister Jesseline Ensor.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Onnie Jemema Lowe Ensor. His children, Sandra and husband Mike Patrick, Clarksville, Tn. Debbie Heaton and husband Eric, Elizabethton, Amy and husband Tank Morrell, Elizabethton and Audra and husband David Wood, Elizabethton. He loved his four grandchildren Brittany Heaton, Cody and Sasha Cornett, Chelsea Wood, Matthew Wood and fiancée Chelsea Grubb. Shotty loved to garden, sew, play the piano, and cook. She left behind a legacy of love and compassionate care that she provided to multiple family members, including her parents and siblings. She was of the Baptist faith.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Mary Bishop Ensor.
Grace was a graduate of Unaka High School. She had lived in Dublin, Va., for 32 years before returning to Elizabethton. She was a member of the Eastern Star and of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Pierce, November 3, 2008; two brothers, Bill and Ralph Ensor; and three sisters, Georgia Quick, Mae Richardson and Rita Roth.

Alma "Tops" Kehrli, 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2017, at Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Tops was the widow of T/Sgt Herbert Kehrli and the eldest daughter of the late Robert "Bo" and Tilda Grindstaff. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Eldon and Lloyd Grindstaff, and sisters, Clara (infant), Lela Pearl Southerland, Bertie Ruth Milhorn and Mary "Monk" Lewis; brothers-in-law, Lee Southerland and Norman Kehrli; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Grindstaff.
Tops is survived by three daughters, Alice Marie Pendergast (Mike), of Cullowhee, N.C., Ann Taylor (Javy), of Elizabethton, and Debbie Bishop, of Johnson City; and six grandchildren, Aaron Pendergast (Teresa), Brandon Pendergast (Stephanie), Julie Phillips (Adam), Courtney Taylor, Jaclyn Wilson (Chris) and Tara Collins (Davey). Her great-grandchildren include Lauren Pendergast, Kelly Pendergast, TJ Rose, Caleb Phillips, Evan Phillips, Kimberly Proffitt, Mason Wilson and Aubrey Collins. Tops remained the widow of T/Sgt Herbert Kehrli, killed in action in Viet Nam in 1968, until the time of her passing. She dedicated her time to raising her three daughters. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality and loved nothing more than having a house full of family and friends to cook for. She was a lifelong member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. Tops loved her church family and her "pew-buddy," Billy Bob Garrison.
Funeral services for Alma "Tops" Kehrli will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 11, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Services will be officiated by Rev. ELIZABETHTON — Robert Elmer "Bug" Ensor, 78, Elizabethton passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Robert Cecil & Cora Ellen Gentry Ensor. He was a 1957 graduate of Unaka High School. He was also a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theology Seminary with a degree in Music & Religion Education.

He was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. HE served in the Vietnam Era. Robert was a member of the Lynn Valley Baptist Church. He loved writing poetry and sharing his gift with others. He also loved music and working with children.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Raymond Ensor; mother and father-in-law, Van & Jewell Edwards; and a sister-in-law, Elaine.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Frank Ensor; three brothers, Howard Ensor and wife Jewel, C. C. Lee "Chug" Ensor, 76, of Clarksville, Tenn., passed into Heaven on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at his home. He was born on March 28, 1940, to Cecil and Cora Ellen Ensor.
Mr. Ensor graduated from Unaka High School in 1958. He joined the Army and retired many years later.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Stanley, Raymond and Robert "Bug" Ensor; and two nephews, Randy and Ricky Ensor.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 36 years, Laura Schlosser Ensor; three sons, Chad and Gregory, of the home, and Michael Ensor, daughter-in-law, Kim Ensor, granddaughter, Danielle Ensor, all of Elizabethton; two brothers, Howard (Jewel) Ensor and Ernest "Pete" (Kathy) Ensor; three sisters, Marie (Tom) Oxendine, Ruby Corder and Lynda (Tom) Vaughn; and three sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Nyoka and Joyce Ensor; one uncle, Frank (Evelyn) Gentry. He is also survived by his in-laws, Bryan (Diana) Schlosser, Deborah (Chuck) Tesnow, Gary (Janet) Schlosser, John (Joan) Schlosser and Kevin Schlosser. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Cecil & Cora Ellen Gentry Ensor. Marie was a 1961 graduate of Unaka High School. She was a retired employee of Kingsport Press after 18 years of service. She was very active in her church, Dungan Chapel Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Church Choir, served as church clerk and active in the WMU for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Stanley, Raymond, Robert & C. Lee Ensor and two nephews: Randy & Ricky Ensor.

Survivors include her husband: Tom Oxendine, Two Sisters: Lynda Vaughn & husband Tom and Ruby Corder all of Elizabethton. ELIZABETHTON - Larry Glenn White, 75, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 in the Community Living Center, James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Seth G. & Clara Ina Sheffield White. Larry was a 1960 graduate of Unaka High School. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Larry was an educator and teacher for 31 years. He received his degree in Social Studies & Education from West Texas State, Canyon, Texas and his Master Degree in Administration at East Tennessee State University. He began his career of teaching at Dimmitt High School, Dimmitt, Texas, then to Madison County High School, Madison, Virginia where he was a teacher and basketball coach, then to Elizabethton High School where he taught history and was Head Basketball Coach for several years, he also served as Principal at TA Dugger Junior High School, Elizabethton, his last school was Boones Creek Middle School where he was Principal. Larry was a former member of the Elizabethton Civitan Club. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church but in recent years he had been attending Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years: Wynell Barnes White who died August 6, 2006.

Survivors include his children: Marcie Strong & husband Dwayne, Ruckersville, Virginia and Lance White & wife Mary Beth, Murfreesboro, Tenn... Gary Ford White, 76, Elizabethton, born February 22, 1943, passed away after a brief illness at Johnson City Medical Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019.
Gary was employed at North American Rayon, and retired in 2005 from ETSU College of Medicine. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Seth G. and Clara Ina Sheffield White. Gary was a 1961 graduate of Unaka High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Glen White, and sister-in-law, Wynell White.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Ashworth White; children, Jeff White and wife Bonnie, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Julie Murphy and husband Billy, Johnson City, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Luke, Katie, Michaela, Bella and Maggie White and Meghan and Padraig Murphy; his brother, Lanny White and wife Tootie White; two brothers-in-law, Richard Ashworth and David Ashworth; nephews, Roman White and Lance White; nieces, Marcie Strong and Mandy Holly; several cherished cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his 'special son,' Kevin "Snake" Lewis.
Gary was a member of West Side Christian Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.
Gary had several hobbies and interests with many great friends gained along the way. Gary was involved in several clubs including: The East Tennessee Antique Engine Club, The 'Barn Buddies,' Elizabethton Saturday Night Car Show Buddies, Unaka High School Class of 1961, Don Hughes Garage in Roan Mountain (Lewis, Bob and Don) and the Easy Auto Board of Directors.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital and Johnson City Medical Center ICU for their compassionate care during his brief illness. A special thanks to Dr. Steven Smith and Dr. Jim Davenport, who cared for Gary for many years.

Billy Joe Bowling, 82, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016, from a lengthy illness. Joe was the son of the late Herman and Mary Bowling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Bowling, and a brother, Sonny Bowling.
Joe attended Englewood Christian Church. He retired from the Elizabethton Star Newspaper where he served many years as the sports editor.
In addition to being sports editor, Joe had served as a newspaper carrier, a photographer, reporter, and a brief stint from 1979 to 1982 as editor of the Elizabethton Star. He was well-known in the community, having served as Director of the Carter County Boys Club and as a director of the Elizabethton Housing Authority board. He was an avid Elizabethton Cyclones fan. Joe graduated from Elizabethton High School, where he played football.
In 2012 he was named to the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame for his 40-years plus as a sports writer.
He was also a supporter of the Elizabethton Parks and Rec boxing program during years past. Joe coached many ball teams from Little League to Boys Club teams.
Joe is survived by three sons, Mike Bowling and wife Lisa of Indianapolis, Mark Bowling and wife Christine of Kingsport, and Matt Bowling and wife Sarah of Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Joe Bowling and wife Mary, Josh Bowling and wife Amanda, Jake Bowling and wife Kendra, and Jordan Bowling, all of Indianapolis, Chris Bowling and wife Krissy of Elizabethton, Craig Bowling of Elizabethton and Zoe Bowling of Kingsport. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Larry Bowling and Bob Bowling, and two sisters, Kathy Smith and Brenda Hawks, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
His family will gather in Indianapolis to celebrate his life and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Tennessee for family and friends

Brenda Gail Bowling Hawks, 67, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness. Brenda was born in Elizabethton to the late Herman C. Bowling and Mary Evelyn White Bowling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Bowling and Joe Bowling.
Brenda was a homemaker and a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church, although she attended Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church. She loved her kindle, watching MASH, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, the Game Show Network and most of all she loved her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 43 years, Albert Daniel Hawks Jr., of the home; two daughters, Michelle Bailey and husband Matthew of Greeneville and Beth Wheeler and husband Matthew of Elizabethton; one son, Albert Daniel Hawks III of Elizabethton; two grandsons, Tyler Stansberry and Alex Wheeler; two granddaughters, Sierra Bailey and Savana Bailey; one sister, Kathy Ann Bowling-Smith of Elizabethton; and two brothers, Bobby Gene Bowling and Larry Wayne Bowling, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Larry “Bobo” Bowling went home to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at his residence at the age of 79. Larry was a lifelong resident of Elizabethton and was born December 9, 1942 to the late Herman C. Bowling and Mary White Bowling. In addition to his parents, Larry has been reunited with his loving wife, Sherry Lou Smith Bowling, who departed this life on September 10, 2013; three brothers, Joe Bowling, Bob Bowling and Sonny Bowling; and one sister, Brenda Hawks.
Larry attended Elizabethton High School, during which time he was a four-year varsity player in Basketball and Track and Field. After graduating from Elizabethton High School in 1963, Larry first attended Hiwassee Junior College and then later Milligan College, continuing his athletic career in college. Upon completing his education, Larry dedicated his life to serving others. Between his active duty and reserve service, Larry served his country in the United States Army for 38 years. He returned home to Carter County and began a career as a teacher and coach. His teaching career lasted for just over 40 years. Larry began racking up accolades as a high school coach and a TSSAA official. He was part of several championship tournament teams, including the 2004 boys basketball State Champion team, the 2017-18 girls basketball state tournament team, and the 2018 girls softball state tournament team. Larry was honored by the TSSAA for serving 53 years as a TSSAA Football Official.
Larry has spent his life demonstrating a deep devotion to his family, to his community, and to helping others.
Those left to cherish and remember Larry’s legacy are his two children, Kevin (Ashley) Bowling of Jonesborough and Heather (Eric) Tester of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Payton Tester and Paisley Bowling; his sister, Kathy (Mike) Smith of Elizabethton; his favorite brother-in-law, Eddie Smith of Elizabethton; and his favorite sister-in-law, Vickie Smith of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and church family also mourn his loss.

ELIZABETHTON — Sonny Lee Bowling, age 63, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, from the Johnson City Medical Center from injuries sustained in an accident.

Sonny was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Herman Carl Bowling and Mary White Bowling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a canine pal, Santa Fe Bowling.

Sonny retired from the Elizabethton Electric System and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Tennessee Moose Association, where he attained the Fellowship Degree, which is the highest degree of the Moose. He loved to play golf and loved animals. Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family and special friends and music – He was Dena and Garrett's biggest fan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Dena Layne Bowling, of the home; three sons, James Garrett Bowling, of the home, Aaron Travis Bowling and Timothy Wayne Mink, both of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Gage and Gunner Mink, of Elizabethton; three brothers, Larry Bowling and Bob Bowling, both of Elizabethton and Joe Bowling, of Philadelphia; two sisters, Kathy Smith and Brenda Hawks, both of Elizabethton; and his canine pals, Cocoa Bowling and Sweet Pea Bowling, both of the home. Phyllis Dean Arnold, 80, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2019, at Signature Health Care of Elizabethton following an extended illness. Phyllis was born in Elizabethton to the late Anders Odell "A.O." Buckles and Daisy Smith Buckles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Arnold, and her brothers, Troy and Norman Buckles.
Phyllis was a homemaker and a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. She was an avid reader, gardener, storyteller and sports enthusiast. She was also quite a fact finder and searcher of how things worked. Phyllis and her husband were living examples of the Bible verse, 1 John 3-18, "Little children, let us not love with word or tongue but in deed and truth." Though they did not have children by birth, they were blessed with a parent's heart and love. They became parents to all the children in the family, any they met and any person who needed love, regardless of age. Her life was God's given love of family, friends and children.
Phyllis is survived by a large extended family.

Flaura “Jeanette” Campbell, 81, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born on November 8, 1939 to the late Roy and Lena Buckles Bowers. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Campbell, and two brothers, Gary Bowers and Dairus Bowers.
Jeanette was a homemaker who loved to cook and bake for her family. She collected recipes and tried many of them on her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister to all her family and will be forever missed.
Survivors include two daughters, Jewell (Kenneth) Lowe and Leslie (Harold Lynn) Arnold, all of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, who she spoiled all their lives, Brandi (Michael) Hartsell, Michael Bowers and fiancée Courtney McCury and Kenny Lowe, all of Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Thea and Tegan Lowe; one sister, Judy (Shirrell) Bowers; and three brothers, Randy (Betty) Bowers, Dewey (Judy) Bowers and Willard Loveless, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as her faithful loving grand-pup, “Ranger,” who she adored.
The graveside service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, April 28, in the Garland Cemetery, Bulldog Hollow Road, with Mr. Kelley Bowers speaking. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kenny Lowe and Michael Bowers; her son-in-law, Harold Lynn Arnold; Joel Kress and Malcom Kress, Larry Bowers and Chuckie Bowers. JOHNSON CITY - Billie Berry Kirk, age 84, of Johnson City, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Elmcroft of Johnson City.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William Noble and Kathryn Peters Berry. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Paul Randall Kirk; sister, Loretta Berry.

Survivors include her daughter, Tamara Kirk Oglesby and husband Robert (Bob); three sons, Michael James Kirk and wife Nancy, Robert William Kirk and wife Kelley, and Paul Randall Kirk, Jr.; two sisters, Pamela Berry Walsh and husband Charlie, and Gail Berry Edwards; ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Kirk will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. prior to the service in the chapel.

Sheilda "Gail" Edwards, 80, passed away Monday, August 19, 2019 at her daughters home in Stafford Virginia.

She was a native of Elizabethton, Tennessee. The daughter of the late William N. Berry and Cathryn Peters Berry. She was retired from Prince William County Schools in Woodbridge, Virginia.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her significant other of 36 years Geogre Cade; two sisters, Billie Kirk and Loretta Berry; and her two great grandchildren, Melanie Frye and Braylen Tipton.

Survivors include three daughters Angela Cook, Cathy Edwards Mangan, Kimberly D. Edwards. Sister Pamela Walsh (Charlie Walsh). Darrell "Dolly" Egli Spake, 87, of Fallston, N.C., went to her heavenly home Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Carolinas HealthCare System-Cleveland with her loving husband by her side.
Born October 20, 1930, in Elizabethton, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Howard and Roberta Egli.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Spake.

Samuel Leon "Buddy" Hardin, age 77, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.
A lifelong native of Carter County, he was born in Elizabethton, TN, to the late Hobert and Sally (Alford) Hardin.
Sam attended Unaka High School and graduated from East Tennessee State University and The School of Banking of the South (Louisiana State University). He retired from Walters State Community College, Morristown, TN, where he was a supporter of the Walters State Senators.
Sam was an avid golfer and life-long Tennessee Volunteer fan, but above all he loved spending time with his family and supporting the athletic events of his grandchildren. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend loved dearly by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce "Peggy" (Holly) Hardin; and stepmother, Juanita (Cole) Hardin.
He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Hedge and husband, Bill, of Jupiter, FL, Lori Armstrong and husband, Mike, of Johnson City, TN; three grandchildren, Shannon Hedge, Cody Armstrong (Great Falls, MT) and Caleb Armstrong; sister, Dora Lynn Moneyhun, of Greeneville; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Cynthia Simmons, Morristown, TN.

ELIZABETHTON - Claudia Nell Ensor, 87, Elizabethton, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Blonnie Blanche Alford. Claudia was born and raised in the Carter community of Stoney Creek. She had retired as office manager for Dr. Douglas Cole, and she dearly loved the practice’s patients, her co-workers, and Dr. Cole and his family. Claudia was one of the few remaining charter members of Unaka Baptist Church, where she was a faithful choir member. She loved to sing, and especially enjoyed attending “singing school” every year, along with her good friend Ann Hardin.
Claudia was a graduate of Unaka High School, where she was a member of the girls’ basketball team.
She was an excellent cook and home decorator and always made the holidays very special for her family.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were Claudia’s world. Whether it was driving them to ballgames, school events, or church activities, there was nothing she relished more. Loved ones often joked that Claudia didn’t like to sleep for fear she’d miss out on something “the kids” were doing. She admitted she was the reason a few of them were spoiled.
Claudia lost the love of her life, Ralph Ensor, on March 16, 1983, in a tragic accident. They had married on July 8, 1952, and Claudia always counted those 30 years and 8 months as the best part of her life. Claudia was also preceded in death by her cousin, Geraldine Grindstaff, who she counted as a sister.
Survivors are her three children: Jeff Ensor (wife, Nancy); Jennifer Grindstaff (husband, Gary); and Alan Ensor (wife, Pam). Five grandchildren: J.R. Ensor (wife, Julia); Justin Grindstaff (wife, Rebekah); Madison Bowman (husband, Joe); Andrea Lee (wife, Suzanne); and Adam Ensor. Ten great-grandchildren: Cale Ensor, Olivia Whittaker, Mathias Ensor, Taylor Grindstaff, Jared Grindstaff, Patrick Sexton, Charlie Bowman, Micah Lee, Coraline Lee, and Axton Ensor.
The family would like to express a very special and sincere “thank you” to all the staff of Life Care Center of Elizabethton for the loving care, hugs, and attention she received. You truly spoiled her! Thank you, Unaka Baptist Church family, for remembering Claudia in prayer and with visits and gifts. ERWIN - Sharon Kay Ritchie Slagle, age 50, Erwin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. She was born on December 25, 1971, in Johnson City, Tennessee. Sharon is a daughter of Nancy Seward Ritchie and the late George Arliss Ritchie.
She was a proud member of the Unicoi County Lady Devil’s Basketball Team from 1986 until her graduation in 1990. Sharon earned her BS Degree in Elementary Education and her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from East Tennessee State University. She began her teaching career at Rock Creek Elementary School where she taught first grade for several years. Then, Sharon started teaching Pre-K at the Community Learning Center with Unicoi County School System. Later, Sharon became the Director of Pre-K Program with the Unicoi County School System. She attended Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church for several years.
Sharon coached the Unicoi County Middle School Lady Devil’s Basketball Team. She loved watching her son, the light of her life play football, basketball and baseball for the Unicoi County Blue Devils. Sharon attended all his ballgames as well as her nieces and nephews sporting events. She was a loving and devoted wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. Sharon will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who knew her. The impact Sharon’s short life made on others will be remembered forever and live on for generations to come. Heaven gained an angel.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Frank and Florence Seward and her paternal grandparents, John K. and Hattie Love Ritchie; father-in-law, Donnie Slagle.

ELIZABETHTON - Donald L. Hardin, 90, Elizabethton ,went to be with his Lord Sunday, December 8, 2019 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness.

A native of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, he was a son of the late Auda A. of the Hardin Brothers Quartett and Viola Peters Hardin. He lived most of his life in Elizabethton. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he received a Purple Heart and other service related metals. He was an employee of American Bemberg Corporation and North American Rayon Corporation for 25 years. He was also an Electrician & Pipe Fitter and a millwright at various construction companies. Don was also a self-employed auto mechanic. He was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an Infant son: Terry Hardin, three brothers: Charles, Danny Ray and Olan "Pie" Hardin and a sister: Alma "Bo" Williams.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years: Carol Groce Hardin. His Children: Randy Hardin & wife Darlene, Tim Hardin & wife Doris and Wendy Watson. His Grandsons: Andy Hardin & wife Monica, Joshua Hardin & wife Diana, and Cory Watson & wife Sheena. A Great Granddaughter:Callie Hardin. His Sisters: Georgia Ellis and Vera Smith. Born April 27, 1944 in Elizabethton to the late Auda & Viola Peters Hardin. He was a 1962 graduate of Unaka High School. Pie was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for several years and retired from Texas Instruments. He was a member of the Good Neighbor Quartet, The Thursday Night Boys and second generation Hardin Brothers Quartet.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Alma "Bo" Williams and two brothers, Charles & Dana Ray Hardin. He was an avid Tennessee Vol Fan.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years who cared for him Karen Taylor Hardin. One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Audra Brooke & Daryl Shanks, two sons & daughters-in-law: Wade & Sarah Hardin and Shane & Laura Hardin and the light of his life his grandchildren: Taylor Shanks, Kassidy Hall and Cooper Shanks. Two Sisters: Georgia Ellis and Vera Smith & husband Mack, Two Brothers & Sisters-in-Law: David "Doug" & Danette Hardin and Donald "Don" & Carol Hardin. Several nieces & nephews.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2019 in the Blevins Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Hayley officiating. Active Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Floyd "Tod" Lowe, Kenneth "Sneed" Shankles, Dean Grindstaff, Leonard Lewis, Clinton "Cooter" Williams, Tommy Verran and Doug Buckles.

ELIZABETHTON - Kenneth Colbaugh, 80, Elizabethton passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Arthur & Nannie Pearl Forbes Colbaugh. He was retired from North American Rayon Corporation. Kenneth served in the United States Army having served in Korea. He was a member and Deacon of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He was very proud of being a Christian and an US Army Veteran. This was evidenced on his 80th birthday cake which depicted an American & Christian flag, the two things in his life he cherished. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Virginia "Tootsie" Peters and Louella Colbaugh and a brother: Powell Colbaugh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years: Carolyn White Colbaugh, his daughter: Susan Marie Colbaugh. Two Sisters: Ruby "Peanut" (Frosty) Bowers and Linda Simerly. Three Brothers: Jessie (Brenda) Colbaugh, Rev. Ray (Loretta) Colbaugh and Lester Colbaugh. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Rev. Nick Colbaugh officiating. Virginia"Tootsie" Peters, 72, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014 at her residence after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur & Nannie Pearl Forbes Colbaugh. Prior to her illness she was employed at Unaka High School. Virginia was a member of New Freedom Fellowship. Her Hobbies were, canning, sewing, gardening, cooking and going camping. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister: Louella Colbaugh and a brother-in-law: Howard Simerly.
Survivors include her family that she dearly loved. Three Children: Juanita & Husband Dejuane Sheffield, Dennis and wife Janie Peters and Lorraine Peters, all of Elizabethton. Two Sisters: Ruby "Pnut" and husband Eugene "Frosty" Bowers and Linda Simerly, all of Elizabethton. Five Brothers: Kenneth & Wife Carolyn Colbaugh, Jessie & Wife Brenda Colbaugh, Ray & wife Loretta Colbaugh, Lester & Wife Doris Colbaugh and Powell Colbaugh, all of Elizabethton. ELIZABETHTON — The Lord Took Pamela Gwen "Pam" Rambo Hicks, 61, Elizabethton to be with him Monday, September 28, 2015, at her residence after a brief illness.

She was a Carter County native. Pam was a 1971 graduate of Unaka High School. She was a member of the Order of Confederate Rose "Wild Mountain Roses" Chapter 11 of Elizabethton.

Pam attended Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. She was loved by many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, C.W. Rambo.

Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Bill Hicks; her mother, Lillie Belle Colbaugh Rambo, Elizabethton; a sister, Paula Rambo, Unicoi; a brother, Perry Rambo and wife Debra, Elizabethton, several cousins and her dog Missy.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2015, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Mr. Randy Carrier officiating.

Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Dale Williams and Dennis Laws and Gary Melvin, Piper. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

A Memorial Graveside Service will be conducted by the Order of the Black Rose.

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence or the residence of her mother Lillie Belle Rambo, Elizabethton.

ELIZABETHTON - James Hartsell Garland, age 76, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

James was born in Johnson City, Tennessee to the late TN and Hazel Waters Garland of Peters Hollow in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton.

Hartsell was a Vietnam Combat veteran with the 1st Infantry Division of XM454 Nuclear Weapons Unit. He was a life member of VFW Post 2166 of Elizabethton. Hartsell was also a member of the Sons of the Revolution and 1st Families of the Civil War. He retired from the Eastman Chemical Company after 31 years of service.

Hartsell was of the Christian faith. He loved life and meeting people and knew people from around the world. His greatest joy was teaching kids Appalachian music. He was a musician and maker of gourd instruments.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years, Lula Buckles Garland; and two sisters, Diana Gail Lowe and Teresa Taylor.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of James Hartsell Garland will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Gerald Holly and Mr. Wayne Mottern, ministers, officiating. Music will be under the direction of New Liberty Quartet. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:45 PM on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

ELIZABETHTON - Steven Gene Pierce, 65, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at his residence.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Billy Gene & Bernice Grace Ensor Pierce. Steven was a 1972 graduate of Unaka High School and 1978 graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in Surveying Technology. He was founder & operator of Iron Mountain Surveying for 30 years. He was a retired fireman with the Johnson City Fire Department after 29 years of service. He was an avid musician and outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting, playing the guitar and gardening. Steven was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 and Carter Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years: Genia Peters Pierce. Two Children: Karen Pierce and special friend, Aaron Taylor, and Emily White & husband Bryan. One Grandson: Isaac White. A Sister: Donna Scofield & husband Don. Five Nieces & nephews: Hope, Jessie, Kate, Will and Zach.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Donald G. Scofield officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Blevins Cemetery with Pastor Don Brandon officiating. Elizabethton- Leonard “Keith” Benfield, 71, went to be with the Lord, October 16, 2022, after a long courageous fight with cancer and heart disease.
He was a retired 50-year member of Boilermaker’s Local #83 of Kansas City, Kansas.
Keith loved talking and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his fur babies, Elijah and Ollie, riding his motorcycle, camping, talking to friends, and sitting on the porch watching the wildlife and the rolling river.
Keith was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, and also attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church when his health permitted.
Survivors include: his wife, Barbara; his children, Holly Channon (Michael) of Moline, Illinois, Jennifer Carr (Steven) of Elizabethton, TN, Jacob Benfield of Port Neches, Texas, and Bob Norris (Shae) of Elizabethton, TN; his mother, Betty; his brothers, Gregory (Robin) and Robert (Mary); his grandchildren, Zachary, Avarie, Emily, Justin, Jesse, Madison, Bailey; and his great-grandchildren, Jazzy, Skylar, A.J. and Peyton; his Aunt Pidge; and several cousins, nephews, nieces and special friends, George Baldwin and Kenneth Loveless also survive.
Keith was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Benfield; two infant daughters; his grandparents, Jenny and Gordon Peters, Floyd P. and Elda Ollis Benfield.
Our family wishes to thank Dr. Jamal Maatouk and the staff of the Kingsport Cancer Center, Dr. Siv, Dr. Rita Plemmons, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, Amedysis Health Care, Amedysis Hospice, and all the nurses, CNAs, and techs that have walked the walk with Keith. We are so thankful for our many friends and neighbors who have been there for us.
