C. D. Shoun, prominent farmer and citizen of Doe Valley, died at his home yesterday after an illness of several days. Funeral services were conducted from the home this morning. Mr. Shoun is survived by his widow who was Miss Fina Stout, also one son, Hillie Shoun and four daughters, Mrs. Kemp Lowe, Mrs. Hop Brookshire, Mrs. R. B. Walsh and Mrs. Clifton Pierce. C. BAXTER SHOUN PASSES AWAY
Mr. C. Baxter Shoun passed away at the old family home on Wednesday, December 8, at the age of 65.
Mr. Shoun was born and reared in Johnson County. Sixteen years ago he moved his family to Avondale, Pa. He came back to the old family home last July.
He joined the Doe Valley Baptist Church 25 years ago and remained a faithful member until his death.
Funeral services were held at the Doe Valley Baptist Church, with Rev. Triplett, Rev. J. O. Jones and Rev. Rufus Graybeal officiating. Burial was at Mountain City Cemetery. Friends served as flower bearers and pallbearers.
Mr. Shoun is survived by his wife, seven sons, R. D., Fred, Romero, and Vernon, all of Avondale, Pa., Kermit, of West Grove, Pa., Harold of Media, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Lena DeVault, LaPlata, Maryland, and Mrs. Helen Robinson, Avondale, Pa.; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters, Noah Shoun, Bristol, Tenn., and Kemp and C. Callie M. Shoun, age 93, Route 3, Mountain City, Doe Valley community, died en route to the Johnson City Memorial Hospital Thursday at 3:45 p.m. after a short illness. She was a native of Johnson County, widow of the late Andrew J. Shoun and daughter of the late Caleb and Rachel Sutherland Shoun. She was a member of the Doe Valley Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Verna Lowe, Mountain City and eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the Doe Valley Methodist Church Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Virgil Booher and Rev. Kenneth Kyker officiating. Burial was in the Shoun Cemetery. Pallbearers were friends and neighbors and flower bearers were ladies of the church and neighbors.

Survivors include his widow Mrs. Pishie Short Shoun; one daughter, Mrs. G.A. Pleasant Rt. 3, Butler; two sisters, Mrs. Suma Lowe, Mountain City; one brother, Claude Shoun, Boise, Idaho.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Greer and the Rev. S.W. Myers officiating. Burial was in Shoun Cemetery, Bethel Community, Mountain City. The Unaka Baptist Choir were in charge of the music. Active pallbearers were Ted Ray Myers, Sproles Nave, Riley Murray, Ivan Morley, Earl Williams, and J.E. Arnold. The family received friends from 7 until 9 Friday evening at the funeral home. Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Daniels was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Peter H. and Bessie Shoun Elliott. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam G. Daniels, a son, Gary Daniels, a brother and two sisters.
Mrs. Daniels was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Becky Daniels, Johnson City; a brother, Haynes Elliott, Elizabethton; and a grandson, Jonathan David Daniels, U.S. Navy, San Diego, Calif. Three nieces also survive.

Dr. Truett Hayes Pierce, age 94, left his earthly body and arrived at his heavenly home on September 7, 2021. He was born on July 22, 1927 in Mountain City, TN, and spent his adult life serving the community and people of Sneedville, TN. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 during World War II and served on the USS Alabama; he was honorably discharged in 1946 and enrolled in ETSU, where he majored in chemistry and physics, and played the tuba in the marching band. It was here that he met his life-long love, Wanda, while she was on a trip with the Knoxville High School Orchestra. They continued dating by writing letters while he was in medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. They were married June 20, 1953, the same week that he graduated from medical school. He then spent one year completing an internship at Knoxville General Hospital.

In 1954, Dr. Pierce moved to Sneedville with Wanda to help start the first Hancock County Hospital. He had originally planned to stay only temporarily, but soon fell in love with the people and community. Here he was instrumental in expanding the hospital to 60 beds with the help of his wife who served as nursing supervisor. He took pride in being a “country doctor,” often making house calls and working all hours of the night. He strived to be a living embodiment of Wanda’s favorite Bible verse, Luke 12:48: To whom much is given, much more is required.

During his 94 years, Dr. Pierce served many roles. He was a physician, hospital administrator, mayor of Sneedville, school board chairman, Shriner, member of Lions Club and Jaycees, board of directors for Farm Bureau, and the board of directors for Walters State Community College where he established two scholarships, and for Carson Newman where he established one. He was a devout Christian, first committing his life to Jesus as a child at Bethel Baptist Church in Mountain City and later as a member of First Baptist Church in Sneedville where he served as a deacon for over 5 decades. However, of all the hats he wore, he was proudest to be called the many titles he was called by his family; son, brother, uncle, husband, father, papaw, and great-papaw.

Dr. Pierce was preceded in death by his parents, David and Dora; brothers, Warren and Teddy; sister, Lenore; niece, Lisa; and beloved wife, Wanda. He leaves his memory and legacy to be carried on by his brother, Benny; daughters, Patricia, Nancy (Donnie Seal), and Janie (LJ Elliott); grandchildren, Brad (Mandy) Seal, Kim Seal, Tara Marion(Kenny), Ross Hopkins (Becky), Amanda Wray (Matt), and Drew Elliott; great-grandchildren Maylyn, Barrett, Allison, and Dane Seal; Brynlee and Paxton Marion; Dawn and Levi Hopkins; and Keaton, Hailey, and Greeah Wray; dear companion Bella the cat; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, friends, and community.

Graveside service was held on Monday, September 13, 2021 at 2 P.M. in Butler, TN at Butler Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers: Donnie Seal, Brad Seal, Ross Hopkins, Kenny Marion, Lynn Greever, and LJ Elliott.

PEACH BOTTOM, PA - Richard B. Shoun, age, 76, of Peach Bottom, PA passed away on August 13, 2016. Born in Mountain City, TN, Richard had lived in Pennsylvania most of his life.

He was the husband of Judy A. (Caudill) Shoun with whom he shared 51 years of marraige. He was the son of the late Joseph C. Shoun and Opal L. (Mullins) Shoun of Peach Bottom. Richard attended Oxford area schools. He worked on the family farm and later worked as a diesel mechanic at the former Herr's Motor Express in Quarryville for 18 years prior to retiring due to illness. He enjoyed antique cars and Nascar and was an avid bowler. He was a member of Porters Grove Baptist Church in Conowingo, MD. He was a member of Washington Lodge No. 156, F & AM of Quarryville, PA and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Valley of Harrisburg, PA and Lancaster, PA, Lancaster County Shrine, Shriners International, and Zembo Temple in Harrisburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Violet M. McKinney and husband Royce of Peach Bottom; Brother-in-law, Samuel Caudill and wife Susan of Midland, NC; Nephews, James McKinney, Lonnie McKinney, Raymond McKinney, and Jacob Caudill; a special great-nephew, Jeramy McKinney and wife, Sarah; and several great nieces and nephews and many cousins.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 6-8 pm followed by a masonic service at 7 pm at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 86 Pine St., Oxford. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Mountain City Funeral Home, Mountain City, TN, where friends and family may visit from 1-2 pm.

Graveside services and interment will be at Phillippi Cemetery, Mountain City, TN.

JOHNSON CITY- Mr. Delmer William Lowe, 80, of 1825 W. Lakeview Dr., went home to be with the Lord,on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at his home. A native of Washington County, he was the son of the late George and Annie Blevins Lowe. Delmer was a U.S. Army veteran, 82 Airborne, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a Rural Carrier. He was a Mason with the Jonesborough Lodge. Mr. Lowe was a lifelong Christian, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Baby Girl Lowe, his great grandson, Luke Smalling; six brothers, James, Lonza, Dan, Eugene, Roby, and Selmer Lowe; three sisters, Ethel Sheets, Thelma Crocetta, and Bessie Peters. BUTLER - Bonnie L. Stout, age 82, of Butler, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Lakebridge Waters Community in Johnson City, TN, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on August 2, 1937 in Johnson County, TN to the late William and Verna Lowe. In addition to her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Stout; sister; Venia Stout & Sue Roberts, brothers; Farley, Clarence, Delmer, Senter, & Roby Lowe.

Bonnie enjoyed cooking, canning, and gardening. She loved being able to keep and Spend time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories are her sons, Ricky Stout and Bobby Stout & wife Robin. Grandchildren, Courtney Stout and Connor Stout. Special Niece that was by her side; Dorsey Lowe. Special friend, Beaut Hardin and other nieces, nephews and cousins.

MOUNTAIN CITY - John B. Shoun, age 80 of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away, Monday, October 23, 2017, at Greystone Healthcare Center in Blountville, TN.

He was born on June 8, 1937, to the late Frank C. Shoun and Charlotte Elizabeth Bingham Shoun. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Kempie Shoun.

John was a wonderful (the very best ever) husband and father. He always had a calm demeanor and was a good neighbor. He loved going to Doe Valley Food Mart for coffee and always had his Levi Garrett chewing tobacco with him. He did not travel much but really enjoyed it when he did leave the farm. He was happiest when he was at home tending his cows and spending time with his family. He enjoyed helping others and spent his life doing so. He was a loyal "Ford Man" and loved Massey Ferguson tractors. John passing by in his red Ford pickup was a common and well recognized sight in Doe Valley. He had a special cat, Mama Cat and three very beloved grandpuppies Briggs, Piper, and the late Kayla. Johns life exemplified Christianity and was truly the last of a dying breed.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years Carolyn A. Shoun; daughter, Elizabeth Leanne Shoun, and fiancé Scott Hodge, whom John thought of as a son; one sister, Carol Ann Shoun Clark and husband Robert ; one brother, Franklin Shoun, sister-in-law, Betty Parise and husband Ed; sister-in-law, Marilyn Cunningham and husband Dr. George Cunningham.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gail Hartley, John Brookshire, and George Lowe officiating. Eulogy will be presented by nephew, Russell Parise. MOUNTAIN CITY - Mrs. Frances Wilson Smith, age 92, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Mountain City Care Center.

Mrs. Smith was born on November 11, 1926 to the late Tyler and Anna (Wills) Wilson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Fred Lee Smith Jr. who passed away in 1985; two brothers, J.T. Wilson and Paul Wilson and one sister, Mabel Shoun.

Mrs. Smith was a member of First Christian Church of Mountain City, Friendship Sunday School Class, H.I.S (His In Service), Nellie Bryan Guild (Ladies organization) and member of the church choir. She was a member of the following community organizations: Eastern Star, Rotary Club, Family and Community Education Club, Retired Teachers Organization and the Wednesday Music Club, where she held various roles through the years.

Mrs. Smith received her BS and Masters Degree + 45 hours from the University of Tennessee. She retired from the Johnson County School System in 1998 after being employed for 46 years. During this time she was Vocational Director the last 15 years and was very active in the community and state activities. Mrs. Smith was instrumental in development of the Aquaculture Program at the Johnson County Vocational School.

In 1998 she received the Honorary FFA Degree and the FFA Eagle Award. In 2004 she was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. She loved her community and her county and was always volunteering for various charities.

Mrs. Smith was a big UT football and basketball fan. She had even played basketball at Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens, TN and University of Tennessee.

Those left to cherish her memories include a daughter, Gaylia Leigh Whetsel; grandson, Eric Lee Whetsel, all of Johnson City, a sister, Mary Earle Elliott of Gate City, VA, special niece, Dinah Jeffries; nieces, Anna Catherine Graunke and JoAnn Elliott; nephews, Paul Shoun Jr., Wilson Elliott and Marshall Elliott and several great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the First Christian Church. Funeral service will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Dwayne Dickson officiating. Eulogy will be given by Minnie Miller and special prayer by Buddy Zuercher. Special music will be under the direction of Nancy Davis and Annette Greer.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2019 at the Phillippi Cemetery. First Christian Church Elders and Deacons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Shine, Dr. Khan, Daniel Jones, John Payne and Eastern Star and Rotary Club Members.

Loraine G. Snyder, age 89, of 6354 Hwy 67W, Mountain City, TN, passed away Sunday March 22, 2014, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
She was born April 28, 1925, to the Ronder H. Goodwin and Beulah Rambo Goodwin. She was a member of Doe Valley United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and was a member of F.C.E. (Home Demonstration Club).
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Rhudy; and a brother, Ronder Goodwin Jr.
Survivors include: her husband, W. Ben Snyder, of the home; one daughter: Kerwin Cornett and husband, Joe; one son: Terry Snyder and wife, Diana; two sisters: Anna Stout Ethridge and Ailene Mizell; grandchildren: Brian Snyder, Clay Graybeal, Candida Presnell, Joey Beth Souder, Jacinda Triplett; great grandchildren: Chloee Graybeal, Sydney Souder, Pacey Presnell, Corbin Presnell, Madilynn Triplett, Abigayle Triplett, Briton Snyder and Keegan Snyder.

Gladys Ailene Goodwin Mizell, age 90, went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Friday, May 25, 2018 in Tampa, Florida. She was born December 10, 1927 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Ronder Hubert Goodwin and Beulah E. Rambo Goodwin. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Byron Butler Mizell also a brother Ronder H. Goodwin Jr., sisters Loraine Snyder, Betty Jo Rhudy and Anna Stout Ethridge.

Ailene graduated Emory and Henry College in 1951. She worked as a legal secretary at the Dean Atchison Law Firm in Washington, DC, and later in civil service at Eglin A.F.B. prior to retiring to become a homemaker.
She was an early and long time resident of Poquito Bayou in Okaloosa County, FL.

Ailene enjoyed decorating, gardening, traveling and studying history and current events. She was a member of the Doe Valley United Methodist Church, the Augusta Jane Evans Wilson Chapter 2640, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Princess Hirrihigua Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her daughter Lunelle Siegel McCallister and her husband David McCallister of Temple Terrace, FL; three nieces and five nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday June 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the Shoun Goodwin Cemetery, 123 Old Butler Road, Mountain City, TN.

She was born March 21, 1934 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Ronder Hubert Goodwin and Beulah E Rambo Goodwin. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husbands Joey B. Stout and John F. Ethridge also a brother Ronder H. Goodwin Jr., sisters Loraine Snyder, and Betty Jo Rhudy. Anna enjoyed Antiquing, traveling and stamp collecting. She was a member of the Doe Valley United Methodist Church. She worked with the Johnson County School Systems and at J.C. Penny.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Annette Stout Morrison and husband John, Johnson City, TN., Connie J. Stout Hill and husband Gary, Johnson City, Tn., a son Gary B. Stout and wife Hatsue, Sumter, S.C. A sister Ailene Goodwin Mizelle, Tampa, Fl., Reba Kate Stout Vaught, 3 nieces and 5 nephews including special niece Kerwin Corrnett and several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. from the Shoun Goodwin Cemetery. with Rev. Gary Hill and Rev. Michael Lester officiating. Music will be provided be Rev. Douglas Grove-DeJarnett.

JOHNSON CITY - Samuel Gibson "Sam" Daniels, 69, Johnson City passed away Friday, October 30, 2015 in the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Samuel & Mary Elliott Daniels. Sam attended Elizabethton Schools and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. He served his country in the US Army and the Naval Reserves. He was a former employee of the Elizabethton and Johnson City Police Departments and prior to his illness retired as a Captain of the Security System of the Johnson City Medical Center. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Gary E, Daniels. He is survived by his wife Paula Rebecca "Becky" Buck Daniels. A step-son: Eric (Christy) Kelly, Greeneville and his two best furry friends Mollie & Roxie. A special thanks is extended to the Staff of the 3300 Wing of Princeton Transition Center of the Johnson City Medical Center for their loving and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 75817, Topeka, Kansas 66675. Private Services will be held as per his request. ELIZABETHTON - Wayne Clinton Shoun, 72, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Hubert Clinton Shoun & Wenonah Proffitt Williams. He was a 1963 graduate of Unaka High School. He retired after 22 years of service as a chemical Technician with Great Lakes Research Corporation. Wayne was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He loved to fish Golf and NASCAR. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father: Clifton Williams, several aunts & uncles.

Survivors include his children: Tracey Shoun and Ryan Shoun & wife Jennifer, all of Elizabethton. Two Grandchildren: Sadie Mae and Gavin Wayne Shoun. His brother & sister-in-law: Eddie & Della Shoun, Elizabethton. Two Nieces: Laura & Stephen Coleman and Madison and Joy Shoun & Kennedy His step-mother: Wilma Shoun. Two Aunts: Ada Nave and Barbara Blevins. His very special friends: Burless Campbell, Rick Church and Larry Greer.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Rev. Estel Williams officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017 in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Solid Rock Trio. Donald Leonard Shoun, age 75 of Mountain City, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020. He was born February 19, 1945 to the late Thelma Stout. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a special aunt who raised him from early childhood, Bernice “Bo” Shoun Stamper, an uncle, William Shoun, a son, Richard Shoun, a sister, Judy K. Wilson, and a brother, James Earl “Jim Bo” Stout.

Donald was a veteran of the United States Army, having retired from a military career.

Donald was a truck driver for many years and he truly enjoyed driving. He also loved antique cars and Nascar racing, especially Dale Earnhardt.

Those left to cherish his memories include a daughter Dawn Marie Morrison and husband Royce “Scooter” Morrison, Jr., a brother, Gary G. Stout, grandchildren, Jace Morrison, Bailey Morrison, Emilee Merritt, and Sydnee Merritt, nieces and nephews, Michael Essick and wife Jessie, Theresa McElyea and husband Tony, Sylvia Humphrey and husband Selmer, Jamie Stout, Shane Stout, as well as several great nieces and nephews, several cousins and special friends.

A memorial service will be held at Mountain City Funeral Home in March, with the exact date being announced later.

Judy Kay Wilson, age 64, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at her home. She was born June 1, 1954 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walter G. Stout and Thelma Lee Shoun Stout. In addition to her parents Judy was preceded in death one brother, James Earl "JimBo" Stout.

Judy loved her family and being with them. She loved her flowers and especially enjoyed going fishing. Judy was a faithful member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church where she was very active and supportive of the youth group.

Those left to share Judy's memory, in addition to her husband of 40 years, Donald E. Wilson, are her children, Mike Essick and wife Jessie, Theresa McElyea and husband Tony all of Mountain City, step- children, Michael Lee Wilson and wife Janet and Laura M. Slatton all of Knoxville, two brothers, Gary Stout of Lenoir, NC and Donald Shoun of Mountain City, grandchildren, Corey Essick and wife Anna and Jennifer Gardner and husband Cyrus, great- grandchildren, Kennedy Rose Essick, Tillian Reagan Essick, Clark Michael Gardner and Titus James Gardner, many nieces, nephews, cousins and her extended family.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday December 4, 2018 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Gary Hill and Richard Shepherd to officiate. Special music will be provided. Graveside service and burial will follow the funeral service from the Shoun- McEwen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Corey Essick, Tony McElyea, Kenneth Grindstaff, Ronnie Fox, Dudley Wilson and Bob Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers are Jerry Stout, Jay Day, Don Shoun, Gary Stout, Tony Woodard and Cyrus Gardner.
