Louise Greenwell Stansberry passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2013.
Louise was born on June 6, 1922, in the Dry Hill Community of Johnson County to Roderic Randolph and Glenn Smith Greenwell. She was a proud graduate of Watauga Academy, located in the town of Old Butler. Louise attended the Elizabethton School of Business, where she graduated in 1944.
She married Daniel Lawson (D.L.) Stansberry on October 25, 1945. D.L. preceded her in death on March 2, 2000. Louise was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Dale and wife, Nell Greenwell, R.H. and wife, Juanita Greenwell, Bernice and husband, Park Stout, Opal Greenwell Boling; nephews, Charles Greenwell and Sam Greenwell; and niece, Norma Lea Knight.
She is survived by her son, Dan and wife, Sharon Hall Stansberry; her grandson, Daniel III and wife, Cindy Miles Stansberry; her great-grandson, Miles Daniel; and her great granddaughter, Lawson Elizabeth.
She took great pride in her family and enjoyed telling stories of her childhood. Louise maintained a joy for life and cherished each moment she shared with Daniel and Cindy and her great-grandchildren, Miles and Lawson.
Louise is survived by nephews, Everette Boling and wife, Lois, Randy Stout and wife, Joan, Dean Stout and wife, Emma, Joseph Greenwell and wife, Jill, and Robert Friese and wife, Annette. Nieces, Patricia Dove, Cheri Greenwell and husband, Ken Richey, and Bonnie Gardner and husband, Richard; a first cousin, Bitha Luster; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Plaster; also survive.
Louise was an adopted grandmother to the family of Leota Letterman; Steve and Leslie Letterman and their children Kason, Kenley and Kielee; and Janet and Jeff Hartman and their children, Hunter and Hayden.
She and D.L. operated a store in the Piney Grove section of Johnson City for more than thirty years, where they formed many lasting friendships. After leaving the farm life of her childhood in Johnson County, Louise returned to farming when she and D.L. purchased land and began breeding Angus cattle in the late 1960s.
Louise was a person of great faith and a devoted member of Telford United Methodist Church. She loved working with young people and was known as a prayer warrior by her church family and friends. She was blessed with a positive outlook on life, a wonderful sense of humor, and a spirit of encouragement. Louise was a loyal friend and was blessed with many friends over her 91 years.
Friends are invited to meet her family and share their memories on Sunday, September 15, between 3:00 and 5:00 and stay for Louise's memorial service following visitation.
Her graveside service will be conducted at Monte Vista Cemetery at 10:00 Monday morning. Honorary pallbearers will be Curtis Collins, Marvin Grindstaff, Don Malone, Steve Letterman, Jeff Hartman, John Stone, Herman Tester, Max Williams, Troy Arnold, Mark Foster, Conley Dockery and the members of the Board of Directors of Watauga Academy Alumni Association.
The family would be honored to receive a note sharing a favorite memory of Louise.

The family is very appreciative of the professional staff at Lakebridge Health Care Center for their support and compassionate care of Louise during her last weeks of life.
There is a celebration of life service scheduled for Sunday, September 15, 2013, at 5:00 pm in the South Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until time of service at 5:00 p.m.
A committal service will be conducted on Monday, September 16, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

Nancy Louise Ward, age 83, passed away on January 26, 2022 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Nancy was born on March 3, 1938 in Butler, TN to the late James Martin Lockner and Blanie Payne Lockner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jesse Willard Ward; sisters, Thelma Irene Bunton and husband Ted, and Jewel Dean Lockner.
Nancy loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a very outgoing person who enjoyed being around others. She liked shopping and going to the farmer’s market. She also liked keeping in touch with her friends on the telephone. She was a member of Buntontown Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Charlotte Ryan and husband Kenith of Johnson City, Jeffrey Ward of Kingsport, Michael Ward and wife Darcy of Mt. Mrs. Martha Louise Day McQueen, age 90, passed away, Monday, June 18, 2012, at NHC Health Care Center of Johnson City after an extended illness.

Mrs. McQueen was born in Johnson County and lived in Butler before moving to Limestone in 1947. She was a daughter of the late William David & Mae Dugger Day. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McQueen was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Kyle McQueen; three brothers, Tead Day, John Day and Ray Day; and one sister, Beulah Deloach.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. McQueen graduated from Johnson County High School, where she was a member of the Girls Basketball Team.

Mrs. McQueen was a homemaker, farmer and co-owner of Queendale Farm. She enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening and raising chickens.

Survivors include her children, David Cyrus "D.C." McQueen and wife, Joan, and Patsy McQueen Greene, all of Limestone; grandchildren, Debbie Abbott and Lance, of Johnson City, Becky Zinnianti and Chet, Jonesborough, and Daniel Greene, Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Beth Zinnianti, Lisa Greene, Adrianne and Brandon Abbott; sister, Kate Wilson, Mountain City; brother, Clyde Day, Marion, NC; special niece, Jean Bates, Knoxville; niece and special caregiver, Georgia Freeman; and several nephews and nieces.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Guy David and Gladys Greenwell Norris. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton.
Ruth attended Watauga Academy and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1944. She took her nursing training at the Cadet Nursing School, Baptist Hospital, Nashville. She worked at the former Carter County Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens and Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Silas Wayne Elliott in 1996 and by a sister: Rudene Forrester.
Survivors include Three Children and their spouses: Kathy & Roy Dula, Sandra & Roy Miller and Gary & Karen Elliott all of Elizabethton. Zola Mae Shankle, age 89, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 17, 2012, from Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Carter County and was a daughter of the late Herman and Fina Stout Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hurshell Shankle; son, Benny Shankle; sister, Edith Elizondo; and nephew, Frederick Elizondo.

Mrs. Shankle retired from the Carter County School System after 36 years of service, where she taught the first grade at Unaka Elementary for most of her career. She was a lifelong member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church, where she was always active in all of the church activities, and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Yankosky and husband Richard of Frederick, MD; sister, Edna D
Andelet of Elizabethton, TN; grandchildren, Mary and Michael Amtsberg of Douglasville, PA, Matthew Yankosky of Frederick, MD, and Julie Yankosky of Columbia, MD; great grandchildren, Benjamin Amtsberg and Sarah Amtsberg both of Douglasville, PA, and Anthony Yankosky of Baton Rouge, LA.

ELIZABETHTON — Edith Elizondo, 82, of 157 Mayfield Drive, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

Edith was born in Carter County to the late Herman and Fina Stout Grindstaff. She later moved to Alton, Illinois, where she lived most of her life before returning to Elizabethton. In Alton, she retired from the Owens Glass Company after 30 years of faithful service. Edith was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church and was a Gold Star Mother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Elizondo, and her only son, Frederick Herman "Freddie" Elizondo.

She is survived by two sisters, Edna D'Andelet and Zola Shankle, both of Elizabethton, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service for Edith Elizondo will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 23, 2008, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Richard Estep and Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Janice Estep, soloist. The family will receive friends Tuesday from Noon to 2:00 P.M. prior to the service or at her residence, 157 Mayfield Drive, other times.

Mrs. Campbell was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and more recently of Freedom Road Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Droke Shoe Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Campbell, November 7, 2015, and by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her daughter, Anne Campbell Davis and husband Ray, Ormond Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Rick MacLean, St. Louis, Mo., and Dr. Brett L. JOHNSON CITY - Pat Arnold Burleson, Johnson City, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness.

Pat was a native of Elizabethton and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959. She was a daughter of the late A. J. and Eliza Stout Arnold.

Pat was a homemaker, but formerly worked as a secretary then licensed Insurance Agent with American National and Independent Life Insurance Companies. She was an ASL Interpreter for the deaf and worked with the Johnson City School System as well as various local churches.

Pat was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Women's Republican Club and former Girl Scout Troop Leader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Burleson, in 2016, a grandson, Joshua Grant Ramsey, her brother, Delmas Arnold, three sisters, Velma Roberts, Geneva White and Frances Campbell.

Pat is survived by three children, Tom Burleson and wife Nancy, Kingsport, Jamie Burleson Harber and husband Walt, Johnson City, Cyndi Burleson Ramsey, Johnson City; one sister, Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton; two grandsons, John and James Burleson, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to the nursing staff of Life Care Center of Gray for their loving care of Pat during her stay.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 21, 2019, at 12:00 noon, from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Pastor Dale Cunningham, officiating. Madelyn Arnold Jones, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at her residence. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnold and Eliza Veda Stout Arnold.
Mrs. Jones was a 1949 graduate of Happy Valley High School and worked in the U.S. Navy Department from 1952 to 1955 before returning to Tennessee. She retired in 1999 as Deputy Clerk of the Carter County Circuit Court Clerk Office. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones was very funny, smart, helpful and loved everybody. She enjoyed spending time at the lake and with her church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dean Jones Sr., four sisters and one brother.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Kelly Anne Jones Barkley and husband David, Cary, N.C.; a son, James Dean Jones Jr. and wife Myra Little Jones, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Megan Danielle Magwood, Chapel Hill, N.C. Joyce Carolyn Bullard, age 82, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021 at her home. Joyce was born on March 10, 1939 in Johnson County, TN; to the late Joe Stanley Atwood and Emma Carolyn Morgan Atwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Bullard, seven siblings and their spouses, and sister in law Edith Atwood.

Joyce was a wonderful woman who dearly loved her family. She really loved her faithful dog Cayde. She was a hard worker and enjoyed gardening in her spare time. She was born in Old Butler, lived in Ohio and Texas and then moved back to Tennessee.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Bobbie Bullard, step-sons Steven Bullard and James Bullard, brother, Ed Atwood, step-grandchildren, Morgan Bullard and Haley Bullard, and step great grandchild Bellamy Bullard, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bob Greenwell, Bruce Greenwell, Carl Greenwell, Gervis Greenwell, Lon Greenwell, and sisters, Lois Guy, Jean Swafford, and Margaret Cardina. She was also preceded by three precious sons, Tony H. Ward, Keith William Ward, and Brian “Shorty” Ward.

Jane was a mother of five. She was a fun, loving, giving, big-hearted person. She always worked hard and found her heart’s calling as a CNA. She enjoyed caring for others and you could see it made her proud and filled her heart to make a difference in the lives of her residents. She was a care giver to young and old, and many called her Mama Jane.

Jane was also spunky, stubborn, outspoken and didn’t care to tell you what was on her mind. She could tell you what she thought of you and make you love her for it. One thing was for certain, if you ever met Jane, you were sure to love her.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband, Herbert Ward; son, Gregory Ward; daughter, Janet Brooks and husband Jesse. BUTLER - Lida Mabel Cable Barnes, 100, Butler, Tn. And Emerald isle, NC passed peacefully after a brave battle with cancer on the morning of April 3, 2021. Lida was born on May 29, 1920 to the late Captain Thomas William Cable, Sr. and Sallie Mae Reece Cable of Butler, Tenn. Lida served in the United States Navy from June 15, 1943 to November 16, 1945.She was discharged as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class. Women were not allowed active duty at that time. She was a graduate of Watauga Academy and East Tennessee State College. She taught for a period of time at Watauga Academy, Butler. She received a degree as a Medical Technologist from Duke University. She was a member of Butler Baptist Church, Butler Chapter # 218, Order of Eastern Star, DAR Otway Burns Chapter and Women Veterans of Coastal North Carolina. In addition to her parents, Lida was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Robert B. Barnes who passed away April 3, 2007, son Tom Barnes, a sister Ann Johnson, and brother Tom Cable.

Survivors include her daughter: Patricia Barnes of Emerald Isle, NC; three granddaughters: Jennifer (Kevin) Snyder of Raleigh, NC, Nikki (Brian) Gant, Marion, NC and Stacy (Lee) Wheeler of Tuscon, AZ; and six great grandchildren. Niece: Brenda Saunders, nephew David Johnson. Several great nieces and great nephews.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2021 in Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Wood officiating. Music will be provided by Chris Hughes. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at Butler Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday will be: Brian Gant, William Gant, David McIntosh, David Markland, Phil Babb, Steve Forrester and Alvin Woodby. Nioka Markland will provide music during the Visitation. Military Honors will be provided by the Johnson County Honor Guard.
