Thomas C. White was one of Carter County's most loyal citizens, and performed his duty well both as a citizen and as a soldier. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company G of the 13th Regiment, Tennessee Voluntary Cavalry[USA] on 28 Oct 1863 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant 12 March 1865. He was with his company on every march and in every skirmish and battle in which it was engaged.He commanded the company on the long raid in pursuit of Jefferson Davis. After the war, he was elected in 1878 to serve as trustee[treasurer] of Carter county.His parents were Lawson H. White[1814-1849] and Mary Elizabeth Clark[1816-1880].On 14 August 1862 he married Mary Ann Smith in Carter County,Tennessee.Mary Ann was the daughter of Ezekial Smith[1811-1890] and Elizabeth Lacy[1817-1881].

ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Ossie Deloach Davenport, 88, 122 Old Charity Hill Road, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Davenport was a Carter County native and a daughter of the late Bob and Minnie Helton Deloach.

She was a member of East Side Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Davenport was formerly employed by Hermitage Health Care Center as a certified nursing assistant. She also was a part-time antique dealer.

Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by one son, Harold Davenport; two daughters, Margie Davenport Coleman and Alice Yvonne Davenport; two brothers, Emmett Deloach and Robert Deloach; one half brother, Frank Deloach; two half sisters, Eva Helton and Ethel Troxell; and one great-granddaughter.

Survivors include her husband, W.E. “Frank” Davenport; two sons, Glen Davenport, Erwin, and Bobby Davenport, Elizabethton; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CARTER COUNTY MAN, 21, TAKES OWN LIFE
Floyd White, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Granville White of near Butler, was found dead near his home this morning with a broken neck and a gun shot wound in his right temple.
Young White's body was discovered about nine o'clock by a neighbor passing through the wooded spot at the rear of the White home.
Deputy Sheriff Mike Boatright and others of the sheriff's force together with Coroner Harmon Collins investigated the accident, which they determined was suicide.
According to investigation, White had tied a rope around his neck and climbed a tree. He fired a .22 rifle shot into his right temple, which caused death, breaking his neck with the fall from the tree also.
Boatright quoted members of the family as saying that he had not been at home since Friday, but that they did not think anything unusual about it since he often went off and did not return for a few days at a time.
The coroner's inquest revealed that he had been dead since late Sunday afternoon, and that his neck was broken when he fell from the tree, following the gunshot wound, which is said to have killed him.
It could not be ascertained as to what could have caused him to commit the act. However, it was reported that he had been acting peculiar for a few days.
Surviving are his parents, three sisters and five brothers.
The North Funeral Home brought the body to Elizabethton to prepare for burial.
Funeral services are scheduled to take place at the family cemetery Tuesday at 2:00 o'clock.

Mr. Earnest "E.C." Campbell, 84, 170 Flora Dugger Road, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, December 26, 2008, in Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness.

A native of Johnson County, TN, he was the son of the late Dan and Sallie White Campbell. He was a retired truck driver and farmer. He was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Campbell was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Dugger Campbell; four sisters, Marie Hatley, Ophra Greene, Emma Taylor and Anabelle Potter; two brothers, Roy Campbell and J.P. Campbell; and a grandson, Daniel Campbell.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard E. and Pam Campbell, Lloyd E. and Roberta Campbell and Joe and Kim Campbell, all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Missy, Ernie, Ann, Jaclyn, Brandon and Autumn; and four great-grandchildren, Brittney, Kaitlin, Tristan and Jaelyn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

BUTLER - Jewel Dean White Vines, 84, Butler passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 in the Johnson County Community Hospital.

Mrs. White was born Friday, May 26, 1933 at Cobb's Creek in Old Butler to the late William Bill & Callie Caldonia Matherly White. She was the last member of her family. Jewel Dean attended Cobb's Creek School. She was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church since age 12. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years: Ray E. Vines who passed away November 3, 1987 and a son Steve "Beater" Vines on October 29, 1996.

Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter: Betty Vines McNeil and a son-in-law that she loved as her own son, Steve. A Son: Ray "June" Vines of Hampton. He was born in Butler, Tennessee, a son of the late Dewey and Addie Eggers White. Mr. White served in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired from the Tennessee Department of Revenue Tax Enforcement Division in 1990. Mr. White was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church, having served as a deacon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Pauline Pierce White; Two Daughters: Janet Carolyn Coker and husband, Gary, Reisterstown, Maryland, and Diana Darlene Mottern, San Antonio, Texas; Two Grandchildren and one great grandchild; Several nieces & nephews; His very special friends: Luther & Ann Deloach, Lowell and Ruby Garrison, Rev. Carl was a native of Carter County and the son of the late John H. and Millie Hardin Hicks.

Mr. Hicks was retired from North American Rayon after 42 years of service. He was the oldest active member of Doe River Baptist Church and was a life member of VFW Post 2166. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the 170th Field Artillery in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ola Hicks, of the home; a sister, Geraldine Pierce, Hixon, TN; a daughter, Kathy Hicks, of the home; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Kenny Jones also survive.

Mr. DeLoach was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and the Darold White Sunday School Class. He was an avid Sportsman.

Carroll Glen Davenport, age 79, 123 DeArmond Place, Erwin, went home to be with the Lord at 5:56 p.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2013, in Franklin Woods Community Hospital following a short illness. He was born in Carter County, a son of the late William Eckart and Ossie Deloach Davenport. Mr. Davenport was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He never met a stranger. Mr. Davenport lived his life to the fullest and loved the trucking industry. He began his trucking career of 67 years when he was 12 years old working for his father at the W.E. Davenport Trucking and Sons. He was still working and doing what he loved most and was presently employed with Duncan Mechanical. Mr. Davenport was known by all his trucking friends as "Snowman." He was awarded the Golden Achievement Award for over 50 years of service in the trucking industry from the American Truck Historical Society. Mr. Davenport was a loving husband, daddy and papaw. He was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church and attended Southside Freewill Baptist Church. Other than parents, Mr. Davenport was preceded in death by two brothers: Bobby Joe Davenport and Harold Davenport; and by one sister, Margie Coleman. He is survived by devoted wife of 28 years, Tina Davenport, a son, Keith Davenport and wife, Charlene, a daughter, Vickie Leonard and husband, Gary, all of Elizabethton; a stepson, Randy Rice and wife, Stephanie, and a stepdaughter, Pam Turner and husband, Rick, all of Erwin; one granddaughter: Brittany Rice; two step grandchildren: Lucy Hunigan and Ethan Bailey, all of Erwin; two special pets: Chico and Bandit. Mr. Bobby Joe Davenport, 69, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord, on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Davenport was the son of the late W.E. Frank "Red" and Ossie Deloach Davenport and was a native of Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathy Davenport, a brother, Harold Davenport, a sister, Margie Coleman, brother-in-law, Edgar Coleman, his father-in-law, Jady Fritts and a brother-in-law, Malcolm Fritts.

Mr. Davenport was the retired owner/operator of Davenport and Sons Trucking, a business he was in all of life. He was a drag racer and broke the world record and still holds that record for the fastest time at the AHRA Spring-Nationals at the Bristol International Dragway, Prostock Division; a record he had held since June 6, 1969. He was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Phyllis Fritts Davenport, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Danny Royston, Limestone; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Beverly Davenport, Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Tina Davenport, Erwin; his mother-in-law, Fay Fritts; brother-in-law, Kenneth Fritts; a sister-in-law and her husband, Helen and Harold Huffine; three grandchildren, Devin Trivette, Limestone; Kayla and Bobby Davenport, Elizabethton and special friends, Shon Blevins and Gail Watson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Davenport will be conducted on Friday, April 10, 2009, at 8:00 PM at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Rev. Doug Hardin and Rev. Zola Mae Snyder, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, was the daughter of the late Roy McKinley White and Ada Dove Phillips White. In addition to her parents, Zola was preceded in death by her husband Watson Decatur 'Doc' Snyder; a son, Scotty Lane Snyder; one sister, Wanetta White and two brothers: Willard 'Widd' White and Frank White.

Zola was a retired from teaching following 44 years of service. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors and working in her flower gardens. Zola was a member of First Baptist Church.

Frances Nell White Treadway, Elizabethton passed away peacefully Thursday, March 26, 2015 at her residence.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late O.F. & Lone White.
Nell was a 1938 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a homemaker and owner of O.F. White Store. Nell & her late husband were lifelong farmers and operated the store for a number of years. She loved to work in her flowers. Nell was a member of the Siam Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Eston B. Treadway, who died September 7, 2014.
Survivors are a special Cousin, Robert White and a special niece, Joyce Treadway both of Elizabethton.
Graveside Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2015 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Eric Wright officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and neighbors in attendance. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the 1938 graduating class of Elizabethton High School.

Mr. Robert Tipton Nave, age 87, of Johnson City, TN, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015, in the Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, TN, he was the son of the late Elbert Vance Nave and Margaret Barnes Nave.

Mr. Nave received his BS Degree from East Tennessee State University and received Master's Degrees from the University of Tennessee and U.C.L.A. He was a retired school teacher having taught in Carter County, Florida and California and he was a member of the Watauga Historical Association and enjoyed genealogy. Mr. Nave was a U.S. veteran, having served in both Air Force and the Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Allen Nave; a niece, Shirley Anne Wandell; and a niece-in-law, Sandra Whitehead Wandell.

Survivors include his sister, Anne N. Hensley and husband, Woodward, Elizabethton; two nephews, James Vance Wandell and wife, Angela, Elizabethton, and Robert Frank Wandell, Knoxville, TN; a great-niece, Sarah Michelle; and a great-nephew, Michael Wandell and wife, Amanda. Anne N. Hensley, 90, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Monday, November 12, 2018, in Elizabethton. She was born August 24, 1928, the daughter of the late Elbert Vance Nave and Anna Margaret Barnes Nave.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley A. Wandell; her step-mother, Mary A. Nave; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Wandell; and a brother, Robert T. Nave.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Ray and Hazel Smith White.
Shirley was a graduate of Hampton High School. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and she loved her church family very much.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Anne Lindsey; a sister, Sue White McQueen; and a brother, Tom White.

ELIZABETHTON - Spencer David Nave, Jr., age 75, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice at Sycamore Shoals Hospital on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, with his devoted wife, Kay, by his side.

Born on February 20th, 1944, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Spencer D. Nave, Jr. was the third child and first son of Spencer David Nave, Sr. and wife, Margaret P. Nave. Serving in the military and desiring to relocate his family to his hometown, Spencer, Sr. moved his young family to Elizabethton, Tennessee. Spencer, Jr. was only four months old at the time of the move; thus, he has always considered himself an Elizabethton native. Spencer took it upon himself to find ways to supplement his family's income. At the age of eight, he took a job as a paperboy delivering the GRIT, followed by employment as a curb hop at Dutch Maid, dishwasher at West Way restaurant, and many other miscellaneous jobs. Spencer's biggest decision was receiving Christ as His Savior at the age of thirteen at the First Baptist Church, Elizabethton.

Before the start of his senior year of high school, Spencer voluntarily signed up with the military. Spencer proudly served in the United States Army from March 1961 to January 1967. He completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. From October 1961 to January 1964, Spencer was stationed at Fulda Gap, Hesse, Germany, serving with the 14th Armored CAV AVN CO. Spencer served in Vietnam from October 1964 to April 1966. Upon his arrival in Vietnam, Spencer was stationed at Tan Son Nhut, serving with the 121st AVN CO. He was also stationed at Bien Hoa, serving with A CO 501st AVN BN (Rattlers), and Vung Tau, serving with the 68th AVN CO. Spencer was a helicopter crew chief. Neutralizing the enemy, rescuing the wounded, and retrieving the dead were just three of his daily duties. Medals awarded include the Soldier's Medal, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal x 2, Air Medal x 32 with V for Valor in Combat, Army Commendation Medal with V for Valor in Combat, Army Expeditionary Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star for Valor in Combat. Spencer was honorably discharged from the United States Army from Fort Eustis, Virginia, on January 10, 1967. Spencer earned his GED while serving with the military and was awarded his High School diploma from Elizabethton High School after his military service.

Upon completion of his military service, Spencer embarked on his career as an over-the-road truck driver, which spanned 40 years and five million miles. During those years, Spencer was gifted the scenery of this beautiful country and had the opportunity to meet people of all races and cultures. In 2002, Spencer defied the odds by surviving a fiery accident, which destroyed both cab and trailer. Spencer retired from driving in November 2005.

Spencer held veterans' causes close to his heart. He is a life member of the American Legion, VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America), VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), DAV (Disabled American Veterans), and the Rattlers/Firebirds Association. Spencer was also a member of the 40 & 8 Society and Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Tennessee Chapter 4, previously serving on the Board. Spencer served as a registered volunteer at the Veterans Administration, Mountain Home, until health issues determined otherwise. Spencer was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Dashiell Lodge #238, Elizabethton, and Scottish Rite, Knoxville, earning his 50-year pin, January 2019.

Spencer's interests included singing and writing songs, motorcycle riding, gardening, reading, researching his Northern Cheyenne Native American heritage, Civil War history, cane making, westerns, sitting on the porch, horses, fishing, and NASCAR. Spencer's faithful feline companion, Tailgunner, was always by his side. Residing in his grandparents' 1920 home for the last ten years has been a fulfilled dream.

In addition to his parents, Spencer was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Christopher L. Nave (2012), his youngest sister, Cynthia J. Nave (2016), and his oldest sister, Ellen V. "Ginger" Shell (2017). Those left to cherish his memory include his wife - Kay Bohrer Nave; two sons – James Darrell (Karen) Nave, Augusta, Georgia, and Spencer David Nave, III, (Bobbie Gail) Bluff City, TN; four grandchildren – Brianna and Spencer D., IV, Bluff City, TN; James Darrell, Jr. and Juergen "Tom" Nave, Elizabethton, TN.; one great-grandson, Jovi Nave and one great-granddaughter, Sarah-Elizabeth "Grace" Britt; three brothers – Anthony P. "Tony" (Kathy) Nave, Elizabethton, TN, Tom (Sherry) Nave, Gulfport, MS, and Ted (Lynda) Simerly, Maryville, TN; one sister – Margaret Nave Hughes, Johnson City, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor Spencer's life will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 29, 2019, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Pastor Susan Arnold officiating. Following the honor of life service, Dashiell Lodge #238, F. & A.M. will conduct the Masonic Last Rites service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Friday, prior to the service. Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Tennessee Chapter 4 will stand vigil during visitation hours. Internment service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 A.M. on Saturday with Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Tennessee Chapter 4 leading the procession from the funeral home to the cemetery. Carter County Honor Guard will provide full military honors. David Michael White, 72, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Friday, June 23, 2023, at his residence. He was the son of the late Jimmie White and Lucille Rainbolt White. David retired from Alemite Corporation, working as an engineer. In his spare time, he enjoyed flying remote controlled airplanes with his grandson, being at the lake, fishing and hunting. Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Dylan White of Elizabethton and Jessee White and wife Amber of Bluff City; one grandson, Andrew White of Bluff City; one sister, Maxine Estep Honeycutt of Elizabethton; a nephew, Jon Estep of Elizabethton; and a niece, Martha Jenkins of Florida. Bobby Wayne Campbell, 80, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 26, 2015.
A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Roy & Carma Pierce Campbell. He had lived most of his life in the Stoney Creek Community. Mr. Campbell worked at North American Rayon Corporation, Powell Construction and was former owner of Campbell's Guttering.
He was a faithful member and former deacon of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Glen Campbell; and a sister, Vanessa Campbell.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years: Shirley Estep Campbell; Two Daughters: Teresa Combs and husband, Alan, and Debbie Eggers and husband, Joe; One Granddaughter: Emily Hendrix and husband, Alex; Three special great granddaughters: Ava, Amelia & Adelyn Hendrix; One Brother: Tommy Campbell and wife, JoAnn; Three Sisters: Shelby Jean Campbell, Thelma Pearce and Lynn Bowers; and a special brother-in-law: Paul Estep.

ELIZABETHTON - Joseph Lynn Campbell, 64, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at his residence. He was born March 21, 1958 in Carter County to the late E.C. & Nell Dugger Campbell. Joe was a 1976 graduate of Unaka High School where he played Basketball and Football. He retired as Director of Operations at the Elizabethton Electric System after 28 years of service. After his retirement from the Electric System, he was employed as Safety Instructor for J.T. & S. out of Murfreesboro. He loved hunting, camping and farming. Joe was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Daniel Campbell.

Survivors include his wife: Kimberly Holly Campbell. One Daughter: Jaclyn Gifford. Two Stepchildren: Autumn (Nathan) Kyte and Brandon Little. Two Brothers: Richard (Pam) Campbell and Edward (Roberta) Campbell. Several nieces and nephews. His two cats: Patches & Eddie.

Terry Eugene White, 69, of Elizabethton, was called home to be with Jesus early Sunday morning, January 20, 2019. He was born in Carter County, Tenn., April 22, 1949 to the late Tobie and Ama Oliver White. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was of the Baptist faith.
Terry was retired from TPI but had also driven a taxi cab in Elizabethton in his early years. As a young man he had earned numerous trophies for his skills as an amateur boxer.
In addition to his parents, Terry was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Campbell White; his sister, Elma Heaton of Johnson City; his brothers, infant Samuel Tobie White Jr. of Old Butler, Tenn., Lynn Almon of Paducah, Ky., and Kenneth White of Hampton.
Survivors include his four daughters, Amy White of Maryville, Tenn., and her mother, Wilma Jackson, Terry's first wife, of Bluff City, Tenn., Geneva Smith and husband Paul of Johnson City, Joy Taylor and husband Phillip of Stoney Creek, and Julie Waters and fiancé Danny Burchett of Elizabethton, Tenn. He has one son, Toby White and wife Tammi of Johnson City, Tenn. Terry took great pride in his family and cherished spending time with his 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Terry has one surviving brother, Larry White Sr. of Johnson City. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 6 p.m. prior to the service. Funeral services will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday, January 26, at Memorial Funeral Chapel. It was Terry's wish to be cremated.

Anna Ruth Atwood, age 88, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 30, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on March 27 1929 in Johnson County, TN to the late Isaac Cable and Hessie White Cable. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Edith Brown and Kate Kyte and brother Joe Cable.

Anna Ruth is survived by three daughters: Elizabeth Wallace and husband Terry, Patricia Tester and husband Doyle and Brenda Curbey; two sons: Robert Atwood and wife Georeta and Freddie Atwood; eight grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren, one sister, Yvonne Phillips, several nieces and nephews.

Billy Joe Bowling, 82, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016, from a lengthy illness. Joe was the son of the late Herman and Mary Bowling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Bowling, and a brother, Sonny Bowling.
Joe attended Englewood Christian Church. He retired from the Elizabethton Star Newspaper where he served many years as the sports editor.
In addition to being sports editor, Joe had served as a newspaper carrier, a photographer, reporter, and a brief stint from 1979 to 1982 as editor of the Elizabethton Star. He was well-known in the community, having served as Director of the Carter County Boys Club and as a director of the Elizabethton Housing Authority board. He was an avid Elizabethton Cyclones fan. Joe graduated from Elizabethton High School, where he played football.
In 2012 he was named to the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame for his 40-years plus as a sports writer.
He was also a supporter of the Elizabethton Parks and Rec boxing program during years past. Joe coached many ball teams from Little League to Boys Club teams.
Joe is survived by three sons, Mike Bowling and wife Lisa of Indianapolis, Mark Bowling and wife Christine of Kingsport, and Matt Bowling and wife Sarah of Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Joe Bowling and wife Mary, Josh Bowling and wife Amanda, Jake Bowling and wife Kendra, and Jordan Bowling, all of Indianapolis, Chris Bowling and wife Krissy of Elizabethton, Craig Bowling of Elizabethton and Zoe Bowling of Kingsport. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Larry Bowling and Bob Bowling, and two sisters, Kathy Smith and Brenda Hawks, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
His family will gather in Indianapolis to celebrate his life and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Tennessee for family and friends

Brenda Gail Bowling Hawks, 67, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness. Brenda was born in Elizabethton to the late Herman C. Bowling and Mary Evelyn White Bowling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Bowling and Joe Bowling.
Brenda was a homemaker and a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church, although she attended Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church. She loved her kindle, watching MASH, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, the Game Show Network and most of all she loved her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 43 years, Albert Daniel Hawks Jr., of the home; two daughters, Michelle Bailey and husband Matthew of Greeneville and Beth Wheeler and husband Matthew of Elizabethton; one son, Albert Daniel Hawks III of Elizabethton; two grandsons, Tyler Stansberry and Alex Wheeler; two granddaughters, Sierra Bailey and Savana Bailey; one sister, Kathy Ann Bowling-Smith of Elizabethton; and two brothers, Bobby Gene Bowling and Larry Wayne Bowling, both of Elizabethton. Larry “Bobo” Bowling went home to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at his residence at the age of 79. Larry was a lifelong resident of Elizabethton and was born December 9, 1942 to the late Herman C. Bowling and Mary White Bowling. In addition to his parents, Larry has been reunited with his loving wife, Sherry Lou Smith Bowling, who departed this life on September 10, 2013; three brothers, Joe Bowling, Bob Bowling and Sonny Bowling; and one sister, Brenda Hawks.
Larry attended Elizabethton High School, during which time he was a four-year varsity player in Basketball and Track and Field. After graduating from Elizabethton High School in 1963, Larry first attended Hiwassee Junior College and then later Milligan College, continuing his athletic career in college. Upon completing his education, Larry dedicated his life to serving others. Between his active duty and reserve service, Larry served his country in the United States Army for 38 years. He returned home to Carter County and began a career as a teacher and coach. His teaching career lasted for just over 40 years. Larry began racking up accolades as a high school coach and a TSSAA official. He was part of several championship tournament teams, including the 2004 boys basketball State Champion team, the 2017-18 girls basketball state tournament team, and the 2018 girls softball state tournament team. Larry was honored by the TSSAA for serving 53 years as a TSSAA Football Official.
Larry has spent his life demonstrating a deep devotion to his family, to his community, and to helping others.
Those left to cherish and remember Larry’s legacy are his two children, Kevin (Ashley) Bowling of Jonesborough and Heather (Eric) Tester of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Payton Tester and Paisley Bowling; his sister, Kathy (Mike) Smith of Elizabethton; his favorite brother-in-law, Eddie Smith of Elizabethton; and his favorite sister-in-law, Vickie Smith of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and church family also mourn his loss.
A service to honor the life of Larry “Bobo” Bowling will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Nathan Jennings and Pastor Bill Greer officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 3 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The service will be livestreamed. ELIZABETHTON — Sonny Lee Bowling, age 63, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, from the Johnson City Medical Center from injuries sustained in an accident.

Sonny was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Herman Carl Bowling and Mary White Bowling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a canine pal, Santa Fe Bowling.

Sonny retired from the Elizabethton Electric System and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Tennessee Moose Association, where he attained the Fellowship Degree, which is the highest degree of the Moose. He loved to play golf and loved animals. Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family and special friends and music – He was Dena and Garrett's biggest fan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Dena Layne Bowling, of the home; three sons, James Garrett Bowling, of the home, Aaron Travis Bowling and Timothy Wayne Mink, both of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Gage and Gunner Mink, of Elizabethton; three brothers, Larry Bowling and Bob Bowling, both of Elizabethton and Joe Bowling, of Philadelphia; two sisters, Kathy Smith and Brenda Hawks, both of Elizabethton; and his canine pals, Cocoa Bowling and Sweet Pea Bowling, both of the home. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Sonny Lee Bowling will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 27, 2016, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Travis Biller, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Potter Family. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday; or at the residence of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Hester "Bill" Layne at other times.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be James Garrett Bowling, Aaron Travis Bowling, Timothy Wayne Mink, Barry Potter, Billy Potter, Terry "Mud" Montgomery, Chris Cordell, Mike Little, Herbert Layne, Mike Malone and Gary Thornsbury. Evelyn JoAnn Deloach Odom, 73, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 28, 2023, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William Howard Deloach Sr. and Clara Marie Holden Deloach. Evelyn was a housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Valley Forge House of Prayer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Deloach and William Deloach Jr. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Roger Odom Sr.; two daughters, Remetha Dawn Loving and Rebecca Dianne (Melvin) Simmons, all of Elizabethton; a son, Roger D. (Kathy) Odom Jr., Hampton; one sister, Teresa (R.L.) Hambrick, Elizabethton; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Allen Simerly and Pastor Tim Hughes officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, in the Patton-Simmons Cemetery. ELIZABETHTON - Max "Scrap" Wilburn White, age 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the Hillview Health Center.

Max was born in the Fish Springs Community of Butler, Tennessee to the late Willard and Wilma Lewis White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Lynn White; and a brother, Robert "Bobby" White.

Max had been employed at North American Rayon Corporation as a supervisor and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church. He was a United States Air Force veteran and was an avid golfer.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Brenda Keller White, of the home; four children, Kathy Timmons, of Elizabethton, Brian White, of Hampton, Gregory White and wife Carol, of Colorado and Kristie Noe and husband Scott, of Gray; two step children, Johnny Proffitte and girlfriend Sherry and Kimberly Proffitte Hyder and husband Curtis, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Susan Townsend, of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren, Summer Halpern, of Naples, FL, Tyler Noe, of Gray, Jacob Noe, also of Gray, Jon Christian White, of Johnson City, Emily Covarrubias and husband Frankie, of Colorado and Austin Hyder, of Elizabethton; three great grandchildren, RJ Halpern, of Florida, Seth Sneckenberg, of Florida and Arya Covarrubias, of Colorado; and his sister-in-law, Penny White, of Elizabethton. ELIZABETHTON - Robert L. "Bob" White, age 78, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Bob was born in Carter County to the late Willard and Wilma Lewis White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Bobbi Rena White Tittle.

Bob was a loving husband and father. He was an active member of Doe River Baptist Church, where he founded the Christian Life Center. Bob retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement he owned and operated his own tax practice, Robert L. White and Associates for 20 years. He was a member of the Carter County Humane Society, where he served as treasurer for over 25 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing and watching UT sports.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 40 years, Penny Tester White, of the home; daughter, Candice Lynn Sieiro and husband Anthony, of Columbia, SC; son, Michael Ott White, of Nashville, TN; his grandchildren, Walt Tittle, III and wife Brooke, of Jonesborough, TN and Lindsay Franks and husband Taylor, also of Jonesborough, TN; one great grandson, Walt Tittle, IV; brother, Max White and wife Brenda, of Elizabethton, TN; sister, Susan Townsend, of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Robert L. "Bob" White will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Doe River Baptist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Daniel Fink and Rev. Jim Hawk, officiating. Music will be provided by Charlotte Crumley. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 18, 2018 in the Lakeview Cemetery in Butler, TN. Active pallbearers will be the men of Doe River Baptist Church. Lynn Snyder, age 72 of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on October 9, 2017, at his home. He was born on April 22, 1945, to the late Watson Decauter 'Doc' Snyder and Zola Mae White Snyder. In addition to his parents, Lynn was preceded in death by a brother, Scotty Snyder.

Lynn was a Vietnam War Veteran having served in the Army as Combat Medic.

Lynn loved living in the mountains and farming. He was a very loving and caring man. He was also a very giving and generous man who would give you the shirt off his back. His family was very important to him and his granddaughter, Shianti, was the light of his life.

He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and had also attended Roan Creek Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Angel Snyder; brother and sister-in-law, Joe Pat and Judy Snyder; grandchildren: Shianti Snyder and Cassie Scalf; nephew, Danny Snyder; great nephew, Scotty Snyder and several other family members.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at the Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor David Hankal officiating. Joel Patrick Snyder, age 76, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2023. He was loved by all who knew him! He was preceded in death by his parents, W.D. “Doc” and Zola Snyder, and brothers, Scotty Snyder and Lynn Snyder.

Robert Stanley Atwood, 73, passed away on March 22, 2021 while traveling in Costa Rica. Robert was born on September 7, 1947 in Butler, TN to George Atwood and Anna Ruth (Cable). He was an Army veteran that served in Vietnam. After serving in the army, he settled in Warsaw, OH and worked as a boilermaker for more than 30 years. After retiring, he settled in Hobe Sound, FL to enjoy the sun and sea. His greatest pleasures were spending time with family and friends, sharing his knowledge and expertise, and traveling the world. Robert was a kind person, who never turned down a friend in need.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna Ruth (Cable), and his sister Brenda Curbey. He is survived by his children, Anthony (Danielle) and Jonathan (Natividad), wife Georgeta, his brother William Fred (Naneth), George Atwood, his two sisters Patricia Tester (Doyle), Elizabeth Wallace (Terry), Laura Baker, two stepchildren, Dana Hall and Horia Paun and many nieces and nephews, as well as a special longtime friends, Gill and Karen. He was the cherished grandfather of Drake, Dezlynn, Tony and Darian Atwood. Pallbearers are Denny Jester, Benjamin Atwood, Terry Wallace, and John Gordon.

A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 at Sugar Grove Church Cemetery Butler, TN.

Brenda Sue Atwood Curbey, 60, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, July 23, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born February 21, 1958 in Elizabethton to the late George and Anna Ruth Cable Atwood. She had lived in Butler for several years before moving to Elizabethton.
Brenda was a 1975 graduate of Johnson County High School. She was a homemaker and in earlier years she was employed at Pizza Inn. She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Layla Trivette and husband Doug and Lana Curbey, all of Hampton; two grandchildren, Alyiah Trivette and Kaylee Graybeal; three sisters, Patricia Tester and husband Doyle and Elizabeth Wallace and husband Terry, all of Butler, and Lora Lee Baker of Kentucky; three brothers, Robert Atwood and wife Georgeta Paun of Florida, Freddie Atwood and wife Naneth of Elizabethton, and George Atwood of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; the father of her children, Jeff Curbey; and a special friend, Charles Julian.
Funeral services for Brenda Sue Atwood Curbey will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Morefield officiating. Interment will follow in the Sugar Grove Cemetery, Butler. Active pallbearers will be Charles Julian, Terry Wallace, Larry Tester, Doyle Tester, Jeff Curbey and Doug Trivette.
