KNOXVILLE — Robert C. Nidiffer, 86, of Knoxville, Tennessee, formerly of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2013 in the Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville, following a brief illness.
He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Fusson L. and Anna Lee Adams Nidiffer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Nidiffer was a retired insurance adjuster, having worked at Allstate and was of the Baptist faith. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in World War II and was a member of American Legion Post #49. He was a loving husband and was devoted to his family and he will be sadly missed.
Survivors include his wife of sixty seven years, Mary Ellen McNutt Nidiffer, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lynn and Cindy C. Nidiffer, Knoxville, TN; two grandchildren, Abby Wilson and husband Jake, Knoxville, TN; and Robby Nidiffer, Chattanooga; one great granddaughter, Halle Lynne Wilson, Knoxville; and one brother, Jessie Smith Nidiffer, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Nidiffer will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Kent Williams, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Thursday. Music will be under the direction of Jake Wilson.
The graveside service will follow the service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

ELIZABETHTON - Smith Nidiffer, 86, Elizabethton passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Fusson L. & Anna Lee Adams Nidiffer. He was a graduate of Unaka High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Smith was a retired, Inventory Clerk with T.V.A... He was a Mason & Shriner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his son: Jessie Smith Nidiffer II and wife Carol. Two Step-Grandchildren and five Step Great Grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Todd Wolfe, Minister officiating. Entombment Service will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday, December 2, 2017 in the Mausoleum of Hope, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be his buddies at Hardee's Breakfast Club. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard.

William Gordon Fenner Sr., 86, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 12, 2023, at his home. William was born in Butler, Tenn., a son of the late Samuel Clyde Fenner and Edna Mae (Farthing) Fenner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Barbara Joan Price Fenner Summerow; his son, Terry Wayne Fenner; four sisters, Linda, Ruth, Ann and Helen; and four brothers, Bob, Gene, Samuel Jr. and Paul. William started and operated his own business, W.G. Fenner, Inc. in 1959. As the owner and operator, William had installed bowling alleys all over the world, including Anchorage, Alaska, Scotland, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, New Mexico and at the White House. William had worked for AMF prior to starting his own business. William was a proud United States Marine veteran but above all else, he was a proud and loving father. He was very devoted to his children and took great pains to show them his love every day of his life. William was of the Baptist faith and loved to travel, in fact, he had visited every state except for Hawaii. He liked racing and was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Atlanta Braves, the Yankees, and the Green Bay Packers. William loved everyone and was loved by everyone. Those left to remember and cherish William’s memory include his son, William Fenner Jr. and wife Penny; three daughters, Kathy Melton and husband Rick, Connie Gray and husband David, and Willie Whitson and husband Gary; his grandchildren, Ginger, Tara, B.J., Ricky, Ashley, Torie, Chelsea, Brandon, Allison, Cindy, Peyton, Bryson and April; several great-grandchildren; his brother, Dr. David Fenner; and several special nieces and nephews. A celebration of William’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Rev. Tim Gouge officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Zion Church Choir. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Jon Shell, bagpiper, will provide music at the graveside. Mr. Hatley was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Alvin and Minnie Arnold Hatley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Velma Hatley, August 27, 2001, six brothers, a sister and a son-in-law, George Perry.

Mr. Hatley was a graduate of The Watauga Academy and a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation with 49 years of service. He was a Lifetime Member of the Carter County Rescue Squad.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was an Ex-POW and a member of the East Tennessee Chapter American Ex-Prisoners of War.

He attended Fish Springs Baptist Church.

HATLEY -- Funeral services for Walter Brown Hatley, 78, 3032 Highway 321, Hampton, who died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Carl “Joe” Hatley, age 93, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2020, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Joe was born in Butler, Tennessee, to the late Alvin and Minnie Arnold Hatley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Virginia Lunceford Hatley; one son, Kenneth Hatley; two daughters, Sheila Stout and Patricia Stout; and six brothers, Wayne Hatley, Clifford Hatley, Brown Hatley, Burl Hatley, Lawrence Hatley and Hubert Hatley.

Joe retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was a United States Army Veteran, having served in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith and loved trading cars and spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Rick Hatley, of Elizabethon; four grandchildren, Doug Stout, Amy Montgomery, Rickey Lee Hatley and Amber Nicole Ward; three great-grandchildren, Mason Montgomery, Samuel Montgomery and Connor Montgomery; and two sisters, Dorothy Pearson and Christine Payne, both of Butler, TN.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Carl “Joe” Hatley will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 1, 2020, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Reverend Brian Cable and Reverend Charles Cable, officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday or at the residence from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturday.

Christine Hatley Payne, of the Little Milligan Community of Butler, Tenn., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was 92 years young. Retha Mae Whaley Hatley, 96, of Butler, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, April 1, 2018, at her residence after an extended illness.
A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late Carter and Maggie Arnold Whaley.
Mrs. Hatley was a homemaker. She loved to work in her garden and loved to baby-sit with children in her community. She was a member of Elk River Baptist Church where she loved to work with children during Vacation Bible School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Ray Hatley, in 1962, and a grandson, James Hatley.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Lynda Hatley, Butler; a granddaughter, Teresa Hodge and husband Russell, Butler; a great-granddaughter and husband, Amber and Garrett Vankleeck, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and her cat, Gray.
Funeral services for Retha Mae Whaley Hatley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Toby Rainbolt officiating. Maude Gryder, of the Elk River community of Carter County, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 31, 2012.

Maude was a homemaker and worked as an employee of the Shadowline Corporation in Boone until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of the Elk River Baptist Church and served for many years as its treasurer and adult women's Sunday School teacher. In recent years, Maude experienced declining health and had to give up these cherished activities.

Maude was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha Arnold Gryder and Arlie Gryder; two brothers, Dan Gryder and John R. Gryder.

Survivors include her brother, Paul Gryder, of the Fish Springs community of Hampton, TN; and a sister, Ida Lou Campbell of the Elk River community. Maude is also survived by 8 nieces and 5 nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Elk River Baptist Church on Monday, September 3, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mike Taylor and Rev. Charles Cable officiating.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Arlie and Bertha Arnold Gryder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Campbell, of fifty-nine years who passed away May 31, 2013; one grandson, Richie Lee Burchett; two brothers, Dan and John Russell Gryder; and one sister, Maude Gryder.
Ida was a member of Elk River Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker and loved her garden, cooking and her family. She loved all her children and grandchildren. Ida and Howard helped raise three grandchildren that were very special, Joseph Trivette, Zachary Buckles and Allie Pearson.

The funeral service for Mrs. Campbell will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Mike Taylor, Rev. Charles Cable and Rev. Nick Bradshaw officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Thankful Hearts and Melinda Shelton.

Shirley Juanita Shepherd, age 81, of Johnson City, TN passed away Sunday, March 22, 2020 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

A native of Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse James Rankin and Maude Juanita Arnold Rankin. She retired from Ballad Health and she was of the Christian faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Fairell Dean Shepherd and three sisters, Joy Hurt, Betty Osborne and Wanda Phillips. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Deana Shepherd Graybeal, of the home and two grandsons, Joshua Castell and Dusty Graybeal, both of Johnson City, TN. MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. -- Mr. Fayette Charles Arnold, age 86, of 3286 Fall Branch
Road, Mountain City, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday,
June 2, 2003, at the Holston Valley Hospital.

He was a native of Johnson County and was born April 19, 1917, to the late
Kelly Arnold and Cliffie Phillips. He was preceded in death by one daughter,
Janice Arnold; one brother, Emitt Arnold; and one sister, Hester Snyder. He was
a member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School
teacher for several years. He was a World War II veteran having served in the
U.S. Army.

Everyone that came to know Fayette loved him. He was a wonderful Christian
husband, father and friend. His gentle spirit will be missed by all.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Margie Dowell Arnold of the
home; two sons: Scotty Arnold, Johnson City; and Kelly Arnold, Johnson City;
six sisters: Rena Brown, Abingdon; Nell Galliher, Johnson City; June Smith,
Bristol Virginia; Inez Wallace, Zionville, N.C.; Vean Reynolds, Charlotte,
N.C.; and Lula Bell Wallace, Baltimore; three brothers: Leavie Arnold, Mountain

grandchild, Sophia Elizabeth Arnold, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, from the Chapel of
the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. David Bentley and Rev Bruce Simcox to
officiate. Music was under the direction of The Fletchers.

Military graveside services were held 1 p.m. Thursday from the Dowell Cemetery
accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

Rickey Lee Hatley Sr., 66, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly at Sycamore Shoals Hospital on December 8, 2021. Rickey was the son of Carl and Margaret Hatley.
Rickey was a self-employed carpet layer and of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Hatley; two sisters, Patricia Stout and Sheila Stout; and long-time girlfriend, Aleta Darnell, of the home.
Those left to cherish his memory are a son, Rickey Hatley Jr., a niece, Amy Montgomery, and a nephew, Doug Stout, as well as several other close family members.

She was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church. Barbara enjoyed flowers, gardening, fishing and taking care of the home. She loved to go to yard sales and flea markets, also.
