6. | Bertha Olivene Peters ![]() Notes: Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Providence, R.I., died Monday morning in the Elmwood Health Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, she had lived in Rhode Island for the past 20 years and was a daughter of the late Frank and Joanne Archer Peters. Mrs. Nichols was a Protestant and was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Nichols, Sr., in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, and Carl Nichols, Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Mike Peters of Hampton; and two sisters, Mrs. Nell Pierce of Hampton and Mrs. Laura Bowers of Elizabethton. Two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. The body is being returned to Elizabethton for funeral and interment. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Provicence, R.I., who died Monday, will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Sunset Chapel of Hatahway-Percy Funeral Home with Fred C. Lester, minister, officiating. Music will be by Mrs. Georgia Cox, organist. Interment will be in the Morton Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call at the residence of a son, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, at any time. |
7. | Celia Isabella Peters ![]() Notes: Mrs. E.H. Bowers, 64, died at 1:20 pm Monday at a Kingsport hospital after several months illness. Her home was at Jonesboro, Route 5 on the Johson City-Kingsport Highway. She was born in Hampton, and had lived in Kingsport and Washington County for 33 years. She was a member of Grandview Chapter 441 of Eastern Star and was a Gold Star Mother. He son Lt. Wayne H. Bowers died in World War II. Survivors are her husband, E.H. Bowers, Route 5, Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Logan G. Flanary, Kingsport; Mrs. Philip B. Hardymon, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Capt. James B. Bowers, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; four sisters: Mrs. Laura Bowers, Elizabethton; Mrs. Nan Smith, Hampton; Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City; one brother, Mike Peters of Indiana. The body will remain in the Hamlett-Dodson Furneral Home in Kingsport where funeral arrangements will be announced later. Funeral services for Mrs. E.H. Bowers will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday from the First Christian Church, Kingsport, with Dr. L. Palmer Young officiating assisted by Dr. Clyde Smith of the Central Christian Church of Bristol. Burial will be made in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Celia married Emmert Houston Bowers about 1905 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Emmert (son of Powell Bowers and Gertrude "Girty" Nidiffer) was born about 1885 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 19 Aug 1961 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee. Mrs. Bowers was a member of the Blue Springs Christian Church and a retired employee of Southern Cafe. Laura married John Clarence Bowers on 20 Aug 1921 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. 31. | Rose Ella Bowers ![]() Notes: Rose Ella Bowers Hardin, 85, passed away peacefully the morning of May 6, 2023, in Pompano Beach, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was born October 13, 1937, to the late John C. Bowers and Laura Peters Bowers in Carter County, Tenn. Rose was a 1954 graduate of Unaka High School. She worked in the restaurant and dietary industry throughout her professional career, including positions at Northside Hospital, Westside Elementary School, and T. A. Dugger Middle School. She was a member of Westside Christian Church. She was a life-long Elizabethton High School football fan and Tennessee Lady Vol basketball fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hardin, and five sisters, Lula Mae Bowers, Anna Belle Hardin, Ruth Pierce, Dora Carr and Dimple Farris.
