MARTHA HEATON
Sister Martha Heaton was born Nov. 26, 1887 in Laurel Creek township, Watauga County, North Carolina. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She united with the Timber Ridge Baptist Church, and has lived a faithful Christian life. She was united in marriage to Samuel J. Heaton on June 18, 1905. To this union were born 13 children, four of whom have already preceded her in death.
On July 6 at 5:30 p.m. the Lord saw fit to call her to her Heavenly home. Surviving are her husband, S. J. Heaton, six daughters, Mrs. Ida Carter and Mrs. Mae Futrell, Johnson City, Mrs. Inez Hamilton, Elizabethton, Mrs. Eva Lynne Sheets, Miss Cora Heaton, Miss Clara Heaton; three sons, Loyd and Floyd Heaton, Butler, Pfc. Junior Heaton of the army.
Her age was 58 years, 7 months and 10 days.
Rev. J. J. Richardson, pastor of her church was in charge of the funeral with Rev. Roby Stout of Neva, Rev. E. L. Edens of Siam Baptist Church and Rev. Lee Tester of Mountain Home Baptist Church assisting.

Louis M. Tester, 81, of Eaton Township, Ohio, died Monday, August 30, 1999, at St. John Westshore Hospital, Westlake, Ohio, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Tester was a native of Watauga County, N.C., and the son of the late Eli and Sarah Presnell Tester. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Tester, in 1994, and by six brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Tester had lived in Eaton Township for the past 34 years, coming from Cleveland. He was employed by Ford Motor Company in Brook Park, Ohio, in the maintenance department, with 27 years of service. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #1250.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alta G. Bunton Tester; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean and Ed Roch, North Olmstead, Ohio, Mary Fitts, San Antonio, Texas, and Kathy and Chuck Runyon, Grafton, Ohio; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Marshall and Linda Tester, Parma, Ohio, Robert and Karen Tester, Medina, Ohio, Ronnie and Liz Tester, LaGrange, Ohio, and Kenny Tester, Grafton, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Tester of Tennessee; and three sisters, Rilda Campbell, Ida Finney and Ruth Jones, all of Tennessee.
Funeral services and interment will be held Thursday in Eaton Township.

Ruth Tester Jones, 94, John-son City, TN, passed away May 6, 2015, at Ap-pa-la-chian Chris-tian Vil-lage.
Born May 30, 1920, in the Sugar Hol-low area of Carter County, TN, she was one of four-teen chil-dren of Eli Fin-ley and Sarah Ca-mo-line Pre-snell Tester.
Ruth grew up in Carter County and at-tended Elk Mills High School. She and her hus-band re-sided in John-son City, TN.
Ruth was a home-maker, an Amer-i-can Red Cross Vol-un-teer for many years, served as a fed-eral data col-lec-tor for sev-eral years, con-ducted sur-veys for the Na-tional Broad-cast-ing Cor-po-ra-tion (NBC), and earned The Sam Wal-ton Award, Wal-Mart Cor-po-ra-tion.
Above all, she was de-voted to her fam-ily. She was of the Bap-tist faith and at-tended Cen-tral Bap-tist Church, John-son City, TN.
Her hus-band, Eugene Broyles Jones Sr., died in 2003. She was pre-de-ceased by twelve broth-ers and sis-ters: David McCoy Tester, Queen Aner Rominger, Har-vey Earl Tester, Sarah Ma-tilda Camp-bell, Fin-ley Pierce Tester, Ben-nie Wal-ter Tester, Ida Ca-mo-line Fin-ney, Luke Lee Tester, Nel-son Rich-ard Tester, Ruby Edith Triv-ette, Louis Mar-shall Tester and Anna Mae Enter. One brother, Wil-liam (Bill) Howard Tester, lives in Mor-ris-town, TN.
Ruth is sur-vived by four sons: Gene and wife, Joy, of Jack-son-ville, NC, Frank and wife, Anne, of Vir-ginia Beach, VA, Ken, of Falls Church, VA, Larry and wife, De-bra, of Myr-tle Beach, SC. She has eight grand-chil-dren, nine great-grand-chil-dren, many nieces and neph-ews and friends.
Ser-vices will be held at Tet-rick Funeral & Cre-ma-tion Ser-vices, 3001 Peoples Street, John-son City, TN.
Vis-i-ta-tion and me-mo-rial ser-vices will be held on Fri-day, May 8, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. fol-lowed by a grave-side ser-vice at 2:00 p.m. at the Monte Vista Burial Park, 1900 East Oak-land Avenue, John-son City, TN.

Mr. William Howard "Bill" Tester, born in Butler, Tennessee on June 7, 1925, the youngest of fourteen children, to the late Eli Finlkey Tester and Sarah Camoline Presnell Tester, passed away Monday, November 14, 2016 at University of Tennessee Medical Center.

He attended schools in Butler, high school in Moultrie, GA and college in Johnson City, TN and Buffalo, NY. He also attended several sessions at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Academy in Donelson, TN.

Bill was a flyer during World War II, U.S.A.A.C., with duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations. His preflight started on Aug. 6, 1942, with his first discharge on December 15, 1945 and his second on May 15, 1947. His list of Medals, Ribbons and Awards include: American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Army of Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, Expert Badge and Pistol Bar, Marksman Badge and Carbine Bar, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.

Bill's career experience includes B.F. Goodrich Research Lab in Brecksville, Ohio; State of Tennessee Wildlife Officer and supervisor, 31 years; McGuffin Lumber Company, and Paty Lumber Company.

Bill was married to Irene Cameron Tester for 54 years before her passing in 2011. He has two sons: Doyle and Ricky Tester; grandson: Craig Tester; and granddaughter: Tiffany Tester Spencer. Great grandchildren: Eli Alfred Spencer, Eric Agnus Spencer, Elliott Abraham Spencer, Earl Addicus Spencer, Eva Ellaine Spencer, Alice Eloise Spencer and Ann Spencer. Along with his parents who preceded him in death, so do his siblings: David Tester, Queen Aner Romainger, Harvey Tester, Sara Rilda Campbell, Finley Tester, Ida Finney, Benjamin Tester, Luke Tester, Nelson Tester, Ruby Edith Trivett, Louis Tester, Della Ruth Jones, and Anna Mae Cook long with several nieces and nephews.

Bill enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, UT sports (especially UT football). He served as a high school basketball coach at Watauga Academy in the late 1940's, and coached a semi-pro Team in Hampton, TN. He was a charter member and past president of the West Morristown Lions Club, and has served on the Board of Trustees of Morristown Hamblen Healthcare System, where he also had been a volunteer since January 1999.

Bill was saved in June 1942 at the Elk River Baptist Church in Butler, TN and has been a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for most of his life.

His family will receive friends Friday, November 18, 2016 from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, Morristown, TN with funeral services to follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Larry R. Parrott and C.H. Harvell officiating. Interment and Military graveside services conducted by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Colorguard will follow in Hamblen Memory Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be the Deacons of Calvary Baptist Church and honorary pallbearers are Darrell Lawson, Jim Wall, Phillip Moore, and Charles Wilder.

Ada (Tate) Church Phillips, of Asheville, N.C., daughter of the late Marion Leroy Church and Ollie Venie Tester Church, was a lady of the mountains, born and raised in WNC High Country.

She loved nature and we can imagine her soul fluttering around the WNC country side like a butterfly. Tate was born on the Cone Estate in Blowing Rock Township, Watauga County, NC on April 26, 1921, where her father was employed at the Cone Estate. She died of old age at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, N.C., on August 9, 2021.

When her father changed jobs, the family, now with five girls, moved to Shulls Mills where her father worked for the ET&WNC narrow gauge railroad that ran between Johnson City, TN, and Boone, N.C. When her mother died 2 months after the birth of their son, Robert on March 14, 1926, the father took Tate, now aged 5, and other four girls to the Grandfather Home for Children Orphanage in Banner Elk, N.C. Robert was adopted by Aner Rominger, a cousin of Tates mother.

Tate had a wonderful life at the orphanage where she was able to swim in Wildcat Lake, ride a horse in the pasture, help with farm chores, wander through the woods, climb trees, play games with the other children, and do all the things that children in a rural area did. When she went to public school, it was in Cranberry, N.C., 6 miles away by bus. Whenever she stayed late at school, she hoofed it back up the mountain to the orphanage.

After graduation she moved from the orphanage onto the campus of Lees McRae College in Banner Elk where she worked her way through school by waiting on tables and cleaning rooms. After graduation from Lees McRae College, she was employed by Hanes Hosiery in Winston-Salem, N.C. During World War II, she volunteered for Nurses training and interned at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. After the war, she was employed by the Kingsport Press, Kingsport, TN.

In 1946 she married Winston Jerome Jackson, brother of L.B. Jackson, Asheville builder and for whom the Jackson Building in Asheville is named. They lived in Kingsport, TN, where Winston had built a new house for her, and where he was employed by the Eastman Kodak Chemical Corp. After Winstons retirement in 1974, they moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. It was there that she met neighbors, Ted and Sally Lange, who introduced her to private jets and ships. After Winstons death she roamed the world with the Langes on their yacht, the Sally Ann, where Tate had her own stateroom and head. Tates home in Asheville was in DeerWood on Hendersonville Road.

Tate married a second time to Edward Phillips, an engineer with Illinois Bell. They lived in a house near the top of Town Mountain Road in Asheville. He died in 1997 and afterwards Tate moved into Deerfield in February 2000. It was there she met a fellow Independent Living resident, Dr. Jay Lathrop, and the two shared the beauty of WNC and the wonderful amenities of Deerfield for 20 years until Tate developed problems that caused her to move from Independent Living to Assisted Living at Deerfield.

Tate was a member of the Carolina Mountain Club and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. An experienced hiker, she hiked the English Lake District 3 times, climbed Sca Fell in England, Mt. LeConte, NC, Mt. Washington, NH, and Mt. Mitchell, NC. She was a dancer, a polka expert, and a Deerfield cheerleader. She enjoyed Pilates and Tai Chi.

Tate was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, sisters, Dora Sanders, Dorothy Church, Edna Pierson and brother Robert Rominger. She is survived by her sister Josephine Handley of Athens GA and by her cousin, Carolyn Davis of Banner Elk, NC. She is also survived by 3 nieces, Linda Tomlinson, Athens, GA, Dorothy Hauck, St. Augustine, FL and Norma Buffone, Jacksonville, FL, and by 7 nephews.

Mrs. Ada Phillips did not wish for any observance of her life and death.

Mr. Harvey Tester, age 85, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 in the Johnson City Medical Center following a sudden illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Earl and Nettie Andrews Tester. Mr. Tester worked for thirty-two years as a maintenance supervisor at Great Lakes Research Corporation. He was a member of Elk River Baptist Church and attended Doe River Baptist Church. Mr. Tester was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He loved country and bluegrass music and performed with several local bands by playing guitar and singing. He also loved animals, especially dogs, and was currently serving as the president of the Carter County Humane Society.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Tester; an infant sister and his step-mother, Nattie Tester. Survivors include his wife, Stella Main Tester, of the Home; a daughter, Penny White and husband Robert, Elizabethton; three step-grandchildren, Candi Sieiro and husband Anthony, Greensboro, NC, Bobbi Rena Tittle, Johnson City and Michael White, Nashville; two step-great-grandchildren, Walt Tittle III and Lindsey Tittle, both of Johnson City and four sisters-in-law, RoseMary Tester, Ohio, Mary Jo Laws and husband H.D. "Sonny", Butler, Edith Finney, Elizabethton and Louise Main, Butler. His extended family, Larry and Janane Finney and Shane Smith, all of Elizabethton; special friends, Wade Ledford, Clinton "Cooter" Williams and many others and three dogs, Gracie, Sleepy and Parker also survive.

Funeral service for Mr. Harvey Tester will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 13, 2012 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. James Hawk officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Thursday prior to the funeral service. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 14, 2012 in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Glen O. Tester, 69, Hampton, TN went home to be with his Lord, on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Carter County and was the son of the late Ben and Lillie Baird Tester. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joel Estes Tester. Mr. Tester was a teacher at Cloudland High School for over forty-four years where he taught chemistry and physics. During his time teaching he was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award, Outstanding Teachers Awards and the Crystal Apple Award. He was a member of Union Baptist Church where he served the church as a deacon and as the custodian. His favorite things in life were teaching school and working for his church. Mr. Tester is survived by his wife, Velma Tester, of the home; a son, Scotty Tester and his wife, Amanda, Hampton; two grandchildren, Marissa Marie Tester, Mark Scott Tester; a brother, Richard Tester and his wife, Betty; a sister-in-law, Glenda Ranshaw and her husband, Doug; three nieces, Tiffany Arnett, Amy Lowe, Amanda Blair and a nephew, Travis Ranshaw. Several great-nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Tester will be conducted on Friday, June 25, 2010 at 8:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Dr. Danny Bright, Rev. Mickey Beal and Rev. Danny Blevins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dr. Danny Bright. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 8:00 PM on Friday prior to the service and at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 10:00 AM in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Richard Winters, Dan Winters, Randy Birchfield, Michael Miller, Steve Branton, Smith Davenport, Kenneth Rainbolt and Doug Ranshaw. Charlene was born March 19, 1930 in Butler, TN to the late Luke Tester and Delores Cable Tester. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Charlene loved gardening, animals and she especially loved helping people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Raleigh Moretz and Chalmas Laws, and one son Randall Laws.

She is survived by daughter-in-law, Denise Laws of Elizabethton, TN; two sons, Doug Laws and wife Peggy of Butler, TN and Brent Laws and wife Jeri of Horatio AR; three sisters, Juanita Wilson and husband Jack of Elizabethton, TN, Carolyn Wagner and husband Bob of Bluffton, SC, and Pat Icenhour of Mountain City, TN; two brothers, Herman Tester and wife Nancy of Jonesborough, TN and Steve Tester of Butler, TN; grandchildren, Tim Laws and fiancé Beth Stout of Butler, TN, Misty Cox of Elizabethton, TN and Joni Griffith of Little Rock, AR; two great grandchildren, Abby and Amber Laws and several nieces and nephews; special friends Lorene Tester, Eloise Fletcher, Pearl Matherly and Anna Ruth Atwood also survive.

Mary Wanauth 'Nanny' Arney, age 82, of Mountain City, TN went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center.
She was born in Johnson County, TN on February 20, 1932 to the late Eugene Cardwell and Ida Bell Heaton Carter.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a great grandchild, Samantha Kelly; sister, Shelby Cardwell, and brothers: Jesse Ray Cardwell and Dean Cardwell.
Mary Wanauth enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking and her flowers. She especially loved her grandchildren and talking to her friends. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Mary Wanauth was a member of Bakers Gap Baptist Church and loved attending church. She loved her church family and truly enjoyed reading her Bible.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Marvin Maurice Arney of Mountain City, TN: daughters and sons-in-law: DiAnna Kelly and husband Patrick and Trela Dugger and husband Joel; sons and daughters-in law: Marvin Arney and wife Kathy and Dean Arney and wife Missy all of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren: Lee Kelly, Tyson Kelly and Rhenda, Ashley McElyea and Richard, Raymond Arney, Jennifer Furches and Jared, Chad Arney and Cayla, Matthew Sluder, Katie Sluder, Kayla Csanady and Greg; brother, Lonnie Cardwell of Elizabethton, TN; sixteen great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her caregiver Danille Brank.

Mr. James Larry Sheets,71, of Hickory, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Frye Regional Medical Center, following a period of declining health.

James was born on December 12, 1947 in Carter County, TN to the late Fred Thomas Sheets and Mary Evelyn Heaton Sheets. He was a member of Refuge Baptist Church in Hickory, and was retired from Spectrum Dyed Yarns, where he had worked for over 45 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Stanton Sheets, four brothers, Ben, Jack and Jess Sheets, and John D. Blevins, two sisters, Maude Riley and Martha Propst, and extended family Scott E. Bolin.

Surviving are his three children, Angel Crawley and husband Kevin of Nebo, Martha "Sissy" Mitschke and husband Robert of Connelly Springs, and Freddie Sheets of the home. James Bennett, 76, 1715 1/2 E. Millard St., died Monday in the Colonial Hill Health Care Center after an extended illness.

He was born in Hampton but had lived most of his life in Johnson City. Mr. Bennett was the son of the late Gilliam and Hester Barnett Bennett.

He was a retired employee of the city of Johnson City. Mr.. Bennett was a charter member of the East Watauga Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Cox Bennett; one son, Jimmy Bennett, Johnson City, one daughter, Betty VanHuss, Johnson City; three brothers, Spencer and Robert Bennett, both of Johnson City, and Nalley Bennett, Hampton; one sister, Laura Murray, Johnson City; one grand-daughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Barnett was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a son of the late Soloman and Victoria Griffith Barnett. He worked for Harris Lumber Company. Mr. Barnett worked in tobacco, loved to garden and was well known for selling his vegetables. He sang in gospel quartets in church revivals and other community events. Iss was a member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist. Mrs. Turbyfill was born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee and daughter of the late Logan & Eva Lucinda Arnett Barnett.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lon Samuel Turbyfill; sisters, Martha Stockton, Faye Barnett, and Mamie Townsend.

Mrs. Turbyfill was of the Baptist faith. She was the best mother on earth. She loved to work around her home, cook, canned and always carried in the wood.

Survivors include her children, Agnes Shepherd, Piney Flats, June Markland, Jonesborough, L.C.Turbyfill and wife; Sherry, Collinsville, Miss, and Martha Cox, and husband Allen, Fall Branch; two brothers, T.V.and Claude Barnett, both of Roan Mountain, Tn; 14 grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; 10 great greatgrandchildren.

Herman Henson, 82, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at his residence surrounded by his family from dementia. He was the son of the late David "Dove" and Lillie Barnett Henson. He was born February 22, 1935 in the Burbank Community and had lived his entire life in Roan Mountain.
Mr. Henson was retired from Roan Mountain State Park after 26 years and was a member of Burbank Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce Henson and Ford Henson; two sisters, Edith Gouge and Vallie Barlow; a brother-in-law, Donald Sheets; and a sister-in-law, Sue Thompson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 59 years, June Sheets Henson; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruthie and Michael Taylor, Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wesley and DeEtta Henson, Hampton, and Scott Henson, of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Dewey Garland, Roan Mountain; and four special grandchildren, Michael Henson and Brady Henson, both of Hampton, Michaela Taylor, Elizabethton, and Sarah Henson, Hampton. A service to honor the life of Herman Henson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, February 19, at Burbank Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Randy English, Rev. Israel Hughes and Rev. J.C. Sheets officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. Interment will follow the funeral service in the Barlow Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be nephews. JOHNSON CITY- Hassie B. Campbell, 98, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Agape Nursing Home.

Mrs. Campbell was a member of True Gospel FWB Church in Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Monroe and Ida Bennett, husband, Lawrence Campbell, daughters; Delores Campbell, and Peggy Campbell Hughes, five brothers; Lester, Cecil, Monroe, Burnett, and Rev. Charlie Bennett.

Myrtle was a dedicated, strong mother, wife, grandmother and friend. She was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. She loved to read, cook, do jigsaw puzzles, and travel when she was able. She loved her family and welcomed anyone to her home to enjoy her amazing cooking.

Clinton Bennett, 75, of the Blue Springs Community of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a valiant battle with leukemia. He was the son of the late Malley and Lillie Arnett Bennett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Grant Bennett, Darius Bennett, Claude Bennett and Barney Bennett Mr. Bennett was a former employee of Raytheon Corporation and of North American Rayon Corporation with thirty four years of service, before retiring from the Abrasive Technology Company in Watauga. He was a member of Blue Springs Christian Church and loved fishing, woodworking, building things with his hands, and he loved his granddaughter. Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years, Wanda R. A eulogy will be provided by his son, Mickey Bennett. Music will be under the direction of Donna Ellis. The graveside service will follow in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery in the Blue Springs Community. JOHNSON CITY - Farrell Bennett, 76, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at his residence, following a brief illness.

Farrell was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City.

He was a son of the late Harrison and Georgia Pearl Arnett Bennett.

Farrell was a 1959 graduate of Lamar High School, and later received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting in 1975, and a Master's Degree in Accounting in 1979, both from Steed College.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving four years in Anchorage, Alaska, then two years in the Air Force Reserves.

Farrell was employed with Holston Army Ammunition Plant, retiring after thirty-two years of service, then returned for five years after Holston Army Ammunition Plant became BAE Systems, "re-retiring" in 2007.

He was a longtime member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendant and teacher, and was the assistant van driver.

Farrell loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf, putt-putt, spending time in the mountains, and served as an usher for the University of Tennessee at home football games for the past nineteen years.

In addition to his parents, Farrell was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer, Roy, Henry, Richard and Clyde Bennett, two sisters, Sara Humphreys and Ann Barnett.

He is survived by his wife of more than fifty-one years, Brenda Barber Bennett; two sons, Hershel Farrell Bennett and wife Gabrielle, Alpharetta, GA, and Anthony Lynn Bennett and wife Liz, Kingsport; five grandchildren, Bronwyn, Kensley and Braeden Bennett, Alpharetta, Evie Kate and Brendan Bennett, Kingsport; four brothers, John and Mickey Bennett, Oregon, Ray Bennett, R.C. Bennett and wife Brenda, all of Johnson City; three sisters, Dorothy Ledbury,

Oregon, Frances Campbell, Watauga, and Nita Rice, St. Simons Island, GA; many, many, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank Brooks Monroe and Avalon Hospice, for their excellent care of Mr. Bennett.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at 7:00 P.M., at Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Crowe, Rev. Byrl Fann and Rev. Howard Ray, officiating. Farrell's son, Hershel Farrell Bennett, will Eulogize his father. Special music will be provided by the church trio and The Quillen Family.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00-7:00 P.M., in the Sanctuary of the church.

The graveside committal service will be held Thursday at 10:00 A.M., in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Bristol V.F.W. Post #6975 and members of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 39, Bristol. Nephews and cousins will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Hoare, Hershel Buchanan, the Men of Piney Grove F.W.B. Church, his golf, putt-putt and U.T. football buddies.

Mr. Everett Lee Bennett, 86, Jonesborough, passed away at VA Medical Center Friday May 17, 2019.

Mr. Bennett was a native of Washington County and the son of the late Eckard and Dorothy Miller Bennett. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dewey Bennett, Bruce Bennett, and Bud Bennett; two sisters Claudine Blalock and Stella Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a United States Army Veteran. He was a member of Skyline Heights Baptist Church.

Mr. Bennett enjoyed hunting and fishing, he loved having people over for his Friday night fish fries. He was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making wine with his brother.

Mr. Bennett was survived by his wife Peggy Hughes Bennett, two daughters, Debbie Ward and Kimberly Brown; two granddaughters Shannon Ward and Emily Brown two brothers, Donald Bennett and wife Opal, Eckard J Bennett and wife Grace; his favorite friend Bo, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday May 20, 2019 7:00 PM at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Pete Tackett and Pastor Richard Long officiating. The family will receive family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM prior to the service.

He retired from Eastman Chemical Company.

He was a member of Limestone FreeWill Baptist Church and a retired board member. Eckard loved going to church and hunting and fishing with his grandsons.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Rob and Ida Cole Bennett and baby brother Casey Bennett.

He retired from the Washington County Health Department. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.

JOHNSON CITY - Beatrice Hughes Carr, age 96, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on October 17, 2022.

She was born in Relief, North Carolina to the late Geter G. and Lula M. Hughes. The family relocated to Tennessee when Bea was six months old. She has lived most of her life in Johnson City.

Beatrice graduated from Happy Valley High School. She also went on and took business and sales courses. After that she was employed by Belk’s and JC Penny’s. Bea started her own business called Bea’s Bargain Barn. Her last employment was with Home Interiors and Gifts for 23 years from which she retired.

Bea had a very active life. She loved volunteering in the local elections. She worked with the Girl Scouts. Bea also stayed busy helping with the Keystone School’s PTA where she served as President for a period of time. When Bea wasn’t working or volunteering, she loved to cook for those she cared about. She was known for her good ol’ Southern cooking. She will be greatly missed.

Beatrice was a member of the Keystone Free Will Baptist Church and was very active in the Ladies Auxiliary and she loved helping others.

In addition to her parents, Bea was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine “Kitty” Whetzel and Nancy Froman; five brothers, Sonny, Glenn, Kenneth, Bill, and Roger Hughes; the pride of her life, her special grandson, James “Jimmy” Price; and son-in-law, Rev. J.D. Price.

Those left to cherish her memory include her only child, Carolyn Carr Price of Johnson City; one special brother, Troy Hughes and one sister, Betty Lamar of Johnson City; one special great-grandson, Aaron Price; and a very, very special great-great-grandson, Abel Price of Nebo, NC. She was also blessed to have several nieces and nephews, along with great-great nieces and nephews.

She had a wonderful cousin that meant the world to her, Brenda Lynn of Manassas, VA.

Bea had a special relationship with Sally Price, whom she said was her adopted granddaughter.

Funeral services for Beatrice will be Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm, followed by a funeral at 12:30 pm. Ministers will be Rev. Bill Greer, Rev. Tony Birchfield, and Rev. Rodney Deyton. Singing will be provided by the Keystone Ladies Trio. The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 pm. Those wishing to attend the graveside are asked to please meet at the cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Hubert Barnett, 91, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday November 2 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson City.

He attended Lamar High School & retired from ASG of Kingsport. After retirement he drove a school bus for Washington County Schools.

Hubert proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

He was a motorsports enthusiast that built, repaired and raced cars. He had a passion for riding his Harley Davidson, fishing and the Atlanta Braves.

He was married to Marie Markland for 62 years. He took excellent care of her for the last 17 years in the home, after she suffered a severe stroke.

He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church, but recently attended Keystone Freewill Baptist.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Marie; brothers, Lloyd Barnett and Clifford Barnett; sisters, Neil Andes and Christine Barnett and great grandson, Eian Bradley Adams.

KINGSPORT - Florence Docia Crowe Robinette, 86, of Kingsport, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 27, 2021. Throughout the day and night, Florence was surrounded by her family including all her children and grandchildren. She passed peacefully holding hands with the love of her life, husband Don, and her granddaughter Abby.

Florence, the 7th of ten siblings, was born on June 10, 1935 in Dennis Cove, Hampton, Tennessee to May Belle Barnett Crowe and Ernest Crowe. Florence and Donald (Don) Robinette were married on March 28, 1959 and recently happily celebrated their 62nd and one-half anniversary. She was an active member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed helping with the food pantry on Saturdays. Florence attended Beauty School in Kingsport and owned Florence’s Beauty Salon for over 50 years. She enjoyed washing, cutting, perming, coloring, and fixing hair for all her many customers and family. She best enjoyed talking and sharing memories with everyone.

Florence is preceded in death by her parents, May Belle and Ernest; her brothers Jim, Harold, and Carl; her sisters Marie and Jane; and her beloved Aunts Ruby and Trudy.

Left to cherish Florence’s memories, especially her delicious and much requested macaroni and cheese and cheesy potato casserole, are her loving husband Don; son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Camille Robinette of Salisbury, NC; her daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Jasen Wells of Kingsport, TN; and five grandchildren who was their dearly loved Mammaw - C.J. Wells (Kelsey), Jayna Gabriel (Jon), and Abigail, Zachary, and Alexander Robinette. She was also blessed with one great grandson, Caden Jack Wells. JOHNSON CITY - Lawrence Barnett, 84, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a native of Pigeon Roost, NC and son of the late Garther and Gertie Hughes Barnett.

In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his five brothers, and his son-in-law, Frank Richards.

Lawrence attended Faith Free Will Baptist Church and Rich Acres Free Will Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family especially riding his four wheeler. Lawrence was a supervisor in the manufacturing industry for several years before retiring.

Those left to cherish Lawrence's memory include his loving wife of 66 years, Louise Wright Barnett, his son, Terry Barnett and his wife Carolyn, daughter, Vanda Richards, grandchildren: Michael Wilson (Tracey), Christy Decker (Tim), David Story, Stephen Barnett (Julie); several great-grandchildren, sisters: Lassie Laws, Dora Laws (Raymond), and Doris Estep; several nieces and nephews, special friends: Doug Evans, Frank Casteel, and his best friend Jeff Rymer.

The family will greet friends to share memories from 11:00 am on Saturday, February 16, 2019 until a Celebration of Lawrence's life at 1:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City with Pastor Kenneth Grindstaff and Pastor David Montgomery officiating. A Graveside and Committal service will be held following the service at Roselawn Memory Gardens with Pastor Robert Keller, Sr. officiating. Active pallbearers will be Michael Wilson, David Story, Stephen Barnett, Tim Decker, Joshua Wilson, and Jeff Rymer. Honorary pallbearer is Shelby Green.

HAMPTON - Glen Barnett, age 76 of Fiddlers Branch Rd., Hampton, TN passed away March 10, 2020.

He was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a son of the late Garther and Gertrude Hughes Barnett. He was retired as a truck driver for Summer Taylor Construction Company. He enjoyed; gardening, cutting firewood, his life in the mountains, and his dog Mitzi.

Survivors include: his wife Barbara Barnett, of the home, children; Joan Ramsey (Doug), of Jonesboro, TN, Susan Mohan, of Hampton, TN, Karen Curtis (Bill), of Rutledge, TN, Paul Barnett, of Hampton, TN, Timmy Barnett (Kathy), of Jonesboro, TN, and Jeff Barnett (Paula), of Jonesboro, TN, three sisters; Dory Laws, Doris Estep, and Lassy Laws, all of Johnson City, TN, one brother; Zeke Barnett, of Green Mountain, NC.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by: one daughter; Linda Gortney, and brothers; Bobby, Clyde, Ralph, Doyle, Kels, and Lawrence.

Funeral services will be held; Friday, March 13, 2020 at 12:00Noon in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with David Montgomery officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at White Pine Cemetery (Byrd Creek Rd).

In loving memory of SFC, United States Army (Retired) Cratus (Smokey) Barnett, a Vietnam Veteran of three tours. Retired Army of 23 years and a two time Purple Heart Recipient. Beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who passed away on Saturday, June 25th, 2016 at the age of 77. Cratus was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina on December 19, 1938. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Reverend Calvin and Rittie Barnett of Green Mountain, North Carolina and a daughter, Shari (Lynch) Barnett of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Kathleen Barnett; twelve siblings, Arnold, Maxine, Edna, Gaylon, Carrie, Carolyn, Charlotte, David, Danny, Michael, Jackie and Jerry. Cratus had eight children, Sonya, Steve, Manuela, David, Daryl, Danny, Todd and Darin; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Smokey was an avid musician and fan of blue grass music. He played at the Red Barn and other venues. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, working in his yard and was a member of the American Legion. He was a master carpenter and loved his dog and best friend, Zeke.

The family will hold a memorial service for Cratus (Smokey) Barnett at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 at the Marbelton Freewill Baptist Church, 1703 Marbleton Road, Unicoi, TN where he will receive full military honors accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Anyone who wants to is welcome to speak at this service.

JOHNSON CITY - Maxine Barnett Garland, age 77 of North Roan Street, Johnson City, TN went home to be with the Lord, December 27, 2017.

A daughter of the late Reverend Calvin and Rita Peterson Barnett she was a native of Mitchell County, NC. She was a member of Beans Creek Church of Jesus Christ. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Survivors include: her husband Ernest H. Garland, of the home, two sons; Richard D. Garland (Betty), of Baltimore, MD, and Roger C. Garland, of Johnson City, TN, one daughter Teresa L. Curtis, of Johnson City, TN, four sisters; Edna Garland, Charlotte Maxwell, Carrie Pritchard, and Carolyn Oaks, seven brothers; Arnold, Gaylan, Michael, David, Danny, Jackie, and Jerry Barnett. four grandchildren; Jessica Trent, James Curtis, Patty Garland, and Tommy Garland, five great grandchildren; Shannon Peterson, Evan Peterson, Kadynn Trent, Taylor and Colt Garland.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents a brother Cratus Barnett.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with G.B. Garland officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Fork Mountain Cemetery (Fork Mountain Rd. Bakersville, NC 28705).

ERWIN - Eva Mae Griffith, age 87, of Erwin, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Eva was a member of Central Baptist Church and was an employee of Texas Instruments until her retirement. Eva enjoyed sewing, reading and playing cards. She also loved spending time in Florida. Eva is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, John Blaine “J.B.” Griffith; one brother, Johnny Wayne Ogle; and two sisters: Anna Jean (Ogle) Wright and Kaye Barnett.

Eva Mae Griffith has left behind to cherish her memory: children: Debby Steffey, Keith Griffith and wife Tanya, Jeff Griffith and wife Nancy, and Sabrina Street; grandchildren: Marianne Steffey, Rachel Clark and husband Blake, Michael “Mikie” Steffey, Miranda Jo Griffith, Ethan Street, Megan Griffith, Adam Griffith, and Christy Parrish and husband Andrew; sisters: Sue Ellis and Kathy Silver; brother, Bobby Ogle; special cousin, Pat Young; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry Grant Whitehead, 70, Gray, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at his residence. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Arthur Jackson Whitehead and Betty Mathis Whitehead Jeans.

Mr. Whitehead was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years Donna Austin Whitehead. Larry graduated from Science Hill High School class of '65 and proudly served in the National Guard. He also worked at Eastman Chemical Company for 27 years until his retirement. From there he acquired his license to be a general contractor where he designed and built houses throughout the Tri– Cities such as Lake Ridge, Preston Park, and Rivermont subdivisions. Everyone knew him by his blue MGB that he drove.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Tatia Dovie Whitehead; son, Eric Grant Whitehead; and a granddaughter; Britni Lynn Whitehead, four sisters, Sharon Smith, Sheila Goins, Becky Doggott, and Nancy Hall, three brothers; Artie, Gary, and Steve Whitehead.

A graveside service for Mr. Whitehead will be held at East Tennessee Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Sunday September 11, 2016 with Pastor Clinton Andrews officiating. Friends and family are serving as pallbearers. Attendees are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 PM.

Nancy Whitehead Hall passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 surrounded by her loving family at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Johnson City, TN, she was a caring and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a homemaker, an amazing cook and cake decorator. She could brighten up anyone's day with her cheerful smile and uplifting personality.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father and mother Arthur and Betty Whitehead and two brothers, Larry Whitehead, Artie Whitehead. She is survived by daughters Nikki Shell, and Melanie Baker and husband Mason; Grandchildren, Samantha Hammett, Ricky and Zachary Shell and Aria Baker; Sister’s, Sharon Smith, Sheila Goins and husband John, and Becky Doggett and husband Denny; brother’s, Steve Whitehead and wife Fran, and Gary Whitehead; along with many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend and father of her children, Scott McInturff.

JOHNSON CITY - Arthur "Artie" Jackson Whitehead, Jr. of Johnson City, TN passed away on Saturday, July 13 at home.

He was born on October 20, 1953 to late Arthur Whitehead Sr. and the late Betty Mathis Whitehead in Johnson City Tennessee.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his older brother, Larry Whitehead; and his grandson, Max Spears.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Whitehead of Jonesborough, TN; his daughter, Jennifer Whitehead Spears and Roger Spears and two grandchildren, Brittnee Nave and Roger Spears Jr. of Johnson City, TN; four sisters, Sharon Smith of Johnson City, Sheila and John Goins of Huntsville, AL, Becky and Denny Doggett of Mount Pleasant, NC and Nancy and Al Hall of Johnson City, TN; and two brothers, Steve and Fran Whitehead of Johnson City, TN and Gary and Cora Whitehead of Erwin, TN; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Artie was employed at several places in his lifetime. First at Interstate Foundry, before going on to work at Allied Piping briefly, and then for City of Johnson City for over 20 years reading water meters.

In his free time Artie enjoyed going to festivals with his wife and loved his cats and dogs as his other children. Anyone who met him was instantly drawn to his happy and sweet personality.

A Celebration of Life to honor Artie is planned for September.

JOHNSON CITY - Judy Andes Clark, 71, of Johnson City, passed away at her residence on Thursday, May 10, 2018.

She was a native of Washington County and daughter of the late Carl and Nell Barnett Andes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Eian Adams.

Judy enjoyed restoring antiques and giving them to folks in need. She loved animals especially her black lab, Easy, and her cat, Lucky.

Those left to cherish Judy's memory include her husband, John W. JOHNSON CITY - Michael Ray Andes, 69, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, after an eight year battle with cancer.

He was a native of Johnson City, and a son of the late Carl and Nell Barnett Andes.

Michael served his country in the Vietnam War.

He loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Michael is preceded in death by: one sister, Judy Clark; and one niece, Joy Harvey.

Survivors include: his wife of 25 years, Marilyn Andes; children, Jason Andes and his wife Stacee, and Melissa Howell; siblings, Wayne Andes and his wife Judy, Phyllis Hill and her husband Gary; grandchildren, Carl Andes, Kyrie Andes, Rebekah Andes, and Harlee Andes; and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Mailien Reed Rogers, the VA medical staff, and Caris healthcare for their care and comfort.

The family of Michael Ray Andes will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 15, 2019 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will be follow immediately after, with pastors Jeremy Dykes and Tad Johnson officiating. A committal will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Barnett Cemetery on Spencer Lane in Johnson City.

ELIZABETHTON - Gary Wayne Perry, 74, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 16, 2023. A lifelong resident of Elizabethton, he always had a smile on his face and was willing to help anyone. He had a heart of gold and a knack for talking on the phone. He loved the Lord and was a friend to all that knew him. Gary was the son of the late Earl & Marie Crow Perry. He was a graduate of Hampton High School and was a devoted member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Matheson Tool & Die. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by uncles: Howard, Jim, Carl, and Alfred Crow, Carl Keplinger and Clarence Perry, his aunts: Annie Crow, Phyllis Crow, Jane Calhoun, and Florence Robinette.

He leaves behind Aunts: Edith Keplinger, Shirley Matheson, Margaret Crow, a special Uncle Harry “Bea”, and Patsy Crow and Don Robinette, as well as a host of cousins. He loved his church family and had many special friends including his caregiver and best friend, Sue Tolley and his little buddy Stetson Lane Cornette; also Sammie Sue, his furry baby cat.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gene Fleenor officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
