Mrs. Ora Glenna Oliver, 79, 982 Old Gray Station Road, Gray, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Oliver was a native of Sullivan County but had lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a daughter of the late Daniel and Bertha Oliver Bowers and was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Paul Oliver, in 1994, four brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Oliver was a homemaker and a member of Midway Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Janette Foxx Conley and Carolyn Gouge, both of Gray; a son, Robert Wayne Oliver, Johnson City; a brother, Howell Bowers, Chuckey; three granddaughters, Cindy Oliver Walker, Jana Gouge Wilson and Tammy Oliver Wilson; and a grandson, Jay P. Gouge. Four great-grandsons, a great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive.

PINEY FLATS - Fannie D. Curtis, age 91, of Piney Flats, was received into the loving arms of Jesus Friday, January 10, 2020.

Fannie was born in Sullivan County to the late William Oliver and Lillie Bowers Oliver. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Curtis; a son, James Edward Holt, Jr.; four brothers and one sister.

Fannie was a godly woman who showed love for everyone around her. She loved Tennessee football, having her family together, visiting with her church and fellowship meals. She also loved watching westerns, Elvis and caring for all animals. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who always took care of the home. She was a member of Piney Flats United Methodist Church. Even as she got older she still served in her church. She would make sure that the shut ins received their bulletins, birthday cards and other church information. She always maintained her servant heart.

Those left to cherish her memory include three loving daughters, Elsie Carrier (Chuck), Daisy Ford (Chris) and Linda Taylor (Robert); four grandchildren, Sammy Holt, Frankie Holt (Lori), Angie Carrier (Reggie Tiller) and Chip Carrier (Nichole); four great grandchildren, Ethan Wine, Chaz Carrier, Harlan Carrier and Spencer Holt. Numerous other family members also survive.

The Family would like to extend a special thank you to the Bluff City Medical Staff, Piney Flats Drug, Christian Care Center of Bristol and a special nurse at the Bristol Regional Medical Center E.R.

A service to honor the life of Fannie will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home Bluff City. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM prior to the service. Officiating the services will be Rev. Jack Stevens and Rev. Estel Williams.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the New Bethel Cemetery in Piney Flats. Family and Friends are asked to gather at the Funeral Home at 10:00 AM to go in procession to the cemetery. Joan Ward, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord and loved ones on Thursday, November 21, 2019, from Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton. Joan was born in Elizabethton to the late J.D. and Addie Williams Oliver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and loving father, Lee R. Ward; a son, Jerry Lee Ward; two sisters, Mae Buckles and Minnie Williams; and two brothers, Clayton Oliver and Harley Oliver.
Joan was a native of Carter County, a devoted, loving and caring Mother and a member of Blue Springs Christian Church. She loved her church, garden work and the people of her church.
Those left to cherish her many wonderful memories include her daughter, Teresa Ward of Elizabethton; a son, Jeffrey Ward and wife Patty of Glen St. Mary, Fla.; three sisters, Wanda Bennett, Nadine Ward and Louis, all of Elizabethton; three grandsons, James Miller and wife Bailey of Elizabethton, Aaron Ward of Virginia and Billy Collins of Picksburg, Pa.; and her granddaughter, Bianca Ward of California. Carl M. Bowers, 92, 577 Highway 91, Elizabethton, died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late A.B. and Bertha Morrell Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lela May and Brown Grindstaff, and a brother, Earl Bowers.

Mr. Bowers attended First United Methodist Church. He was a retired flight instructor with Appalachian Flying Service at the Tri-Cities Regional Airport with over 20,000 flight hours and was also an FAA Examiner. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew in both the European and Asian theatres.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Ritchie Bowers, of the home, a daughter and son-in-law, Carla Bowers Cox and Bob Cox, a granddaughter and spouse, Tiffany and Scott Gardner, and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Johnathon Gardner, all of Knoxville.

The funeral service for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 31, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Scott Reynolds. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, at Pearl Bowers Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Tennessee National Guard. Active Military pallbearers will also be provided by the
Tennessee National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Joseph May, Dr. Floyd Earl May, Dr. Stephen May, Dr. David May, Sam Ritchie, Randy Musick, Kenneth Mann, Kenneth Norton, Lewis Bowers, Ray Townsend, Kenneth Williams, Gary Williams, Earl Grindstaff, Bill McGhee and Jerry Hayes. Ivory J. Pierce, 85, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at the Pine Ridge Health and Rehab Center. She was the daughter of the late Joseph H. Pierce, Sr. and Creola Edith Pierce and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Wilson and her husband, Gilbert; six brothers and one sister-in-law, Earl Pierce and his wife, Bernice; Raymond Pierce; Joe Pierce, Jr.; Jack Pierce; Lloyd Wayne Pierce; and an infant brother. Ms. Pierce loved working in flowers and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Cynthia Ensor and her husband, Henry Wayne, Elizabethton; Gretchen Miller and her husband, Larry, Gray; two brothers, Lawrence Pierce and his wife, Gaye, Elizabethton; Aaron Pierce and his wife, Lynda, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Anna Ruth Pierce, Elizabethton; special friends, Cleola Taylor, Ernest Lee Wilson, Dorothy Burrow, and Herbert and Kathy Street, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Ms. Pierce will be conducted on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace with Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sue Bowers, pianist and Dale Williams, soloist. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 to 7:00 PM Friday prior to the service and at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Lynda Pierce, 202 Sunrise Drive, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Duncan officiating. Lawrence Pierce, age 85, of Elizabethton, went home to join his family in Heaven on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from Hermitage Health Care Center. Lawrence was born in Elizabethton to the late Joseph H. Pierce, Sr. and Creola Oliver Pierce. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Pierce, Joe Pierce, Earl Pierce, and Jack Pierce; and three sisters, Vera, Ivory and Gretchen.

Lawrence retired from Watauga Industries and from Watauga Forestry Services. He was a United States Army veteran and was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Rada Gaye Bowers Pierce, of the home; his sons, Keith Pierce and Zaney Pierce, both of Elizabethton; his daughters, Debbie Wiseman and husband Mike, of Morganton, NC and Sandra Vanover, of Elizabethton; a grandson, Lucas Pierce, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Jada Vanover, of Elizabethton; a sister, Cynthia Ensor, of Elizabethton; and a brother, Aaron Pierce, of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Lawrence Pierce will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday March 2, 2016 at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Roe, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir. The family will receive friends at the church between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, prior to the service on Wednesday; or at the residence at any time.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Aaron Howard Pierce, age 77, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord and loved ones passed before him Friday, September 6, 2019 in the Holston Valley Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Joe H. and Creola Oliver Pierce. He was a 1960 graduate of Unaka High School where he was a standout football player. Aaron retired from Great Lakes Research Corporation. He also was employed by the State Highway Department and as custodian at Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton for nearly five years. He attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. Aaron was active in Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer fireman for the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed sports, especially football, fishing and spending time with his family especially around the holiday season.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by ten siblings. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Lynda Sue Tolley Pierce, of the home; his children, Tim and Penny Pierce, Mark and Sherry Pierce, Tammy and John Nanney, Debbie LeVeau and Doug Wilson all of Elizabethton; Todd and Lin Stevens, Gray and April and Richie Hooven, Kingsport; a sister, Cynthia Ensor and husband Henry, Elizabethton; sisters-in-law, Anna Ruth Pierce and Gaye Pierce; fourteen grandchildren and their spouses and ten great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends also survive.

Ola Clinton Bowers, 91, of Elizabethton, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Pine Ridge Care Center.
Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Luther and Flora Buckles Bowers. In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Colbaugh Bowers, in 2003, and by three brothers and a sister.
Mr. Bowers received his G.E.D. from Unaka High School. He was retired from the Chemical Division of
North American Rayon Corporation after 49 years of service and was a member of Hunter United Methodist
Church. He was an avid reader and an avid Lady Vols fan and Elizabethton Twins Baseball fan. He was active
in the Democratic Party and was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Bowers Williams, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law,
Ralph C. and Sandra Bowers, Lansing, Mich., and Larry E. and Sharon Bowers, Elizabethton; five grandsons,
Michael Bowers, Mark Bowers, Todd Williams, Benjamin Bowers and Christopher Bowers; four great-grand-
daughters; and four sisters, Novella Massengill, Bluff City, Margaret "Toots" Campbell, Mary Evelyn Bennett and Stella Mae Brewer, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Manis and Rev. Estil Williams officiating. Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Luther A. and Flaura Buckles Bowers.
Mr. Bowers was a member of Blue Springs Christian Church. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a retired painter and a member of the National Rifle Association and the Beuladean Citizens Club

Novella Eliza Bowers Massengill, age 86, of Bluff City, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following a brief illness.

Novella was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Luther and Flaura Buckles Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy Bowers, Ola Bowers, Emmert Bowers and Darrell Bowers; and three sisters, Reva Angel, Margaret Campbell and Mary Evelyn Bennett.

Mrs. Massengill was a homemaker and was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church. She loved to grow flowers and cooking.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Paul D. Massengill, of the home; a daughter, Karen M. Campbell, Bluff City; a son, Timothy P. Massengill, Bluff City; two granddaughters, Carrie Campbell, Los Angeles, CA, and Christina Campbell, Bluff City; one great granddaughter, Eliza Campbell, Bluff City; and one sister, Stella Brewer, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Novella Eliza Bowers Massengill will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Tetrick Funeral Home – Bluff City Chapel, with Mr. Patrick Mitchell, minister, officiating. ELIZABETHTON — Mr. Eugene F. (Jack) Buckles, formerly of 159 Buckles Road, Elizabethton, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

He was born on December 13, 1921, to the late Frank and Emma Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Juanita G. Buckles; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pearl and Luther Buckles and Effie and Carmack Danner; two brothers, Clay Buckles and Claude Buckles. He was a native of Carter County, TN.

Mr. Buckles was a life-long farmer in the Blue Springs Community of Carter County, he also served in the United States Army and saw combat in Europe during WWII. He was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for many years and served two terms on the Carter County Commission. He was a member of the Blue Springs Christian Church.

Mr. Buckles was fond of bluegrass music, gospel music and old time fiddle tunes. One of his favorite songs was "What a Day That Will Be" with which he often sang along. He especially enjoyed the gospel music of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

Mr. Buckles is survived by four children: Vivian Hammonds, Wayne L. Buckles, Barbara Jean Lotshaw, all of Elizabethton, and Debbie Dotson, of Watauga; two sons-in-law, Howard Hammonds and Mark Dotson; four grandchildren, Melanie Harkleroad and husband, Tim, of Bristol, Nathan Arnold and wife, Shelley, of Norman, OK, Frank Arnold and wife, Caryn, of Tulsa, OK, Dustin Buckles and wife, Jessica, Elizabethton; five great-grandchildren, Martin and Sarah Harkleroad, Bristol, Mason, Haley and Brett Arnold, Norman, OK; brothers and sisters-in-law, H.J. and Helen Buckles, Ivan Buckles, Earl and Helen Buckles, Elizabethton, Paul and Peggy Buckles, of Mt. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Buckles and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Buckles, in 1986; three brothers; and two sisters-in-law, Clay and Georgia Buckles, Claude Buckles, Eugene and Juanita Buckles; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Luther and Pearl Buckles, Carmack and Effie Danner; two brothers-in-law, Elwood Garland, Guerney Pierce; a sister-in-law, Ella Mae Buckles.

Mrs. Buckles was a homemaker and a partner in the Floyd Buckles Sales Company. She was a devoted member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. She loved her friends in the Willing Workers Sunday School Class there.

She was a loving aunt who will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by four brothers, H.J. Buckles and his wife, Helen, Elizabethton, Ivan Buckles; Elizabethton, Earl Buckles and his wife, Helen, Elizabethton; Paul Buckles and his wife, Peggy, Mt. H.J. Buckles, 87, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, August 15, 2016, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. H.J. was born in Carter County to the late Frank "F.T." Buckles and Emma Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Buckles, Pearl Buckles, Margaret Garland and Effie Danner; his first wife, Ella Mae Buckles; and five brothers, Clay Buckles, Gene Buckles, Claude Buckles, Earl Buckles and Ivan Buckles.
H.J. had worked as both a bus driver and a farmer. He was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and attended Meadowview Baptist Church. H.J. loved gardening and will be missed by everyone that knew him.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Frank and Emma Buckles.

Mr. Buckles was employed for a number of years by the Carter County Sheriff Department. He was also a farmer. He was a member of the Carter County Cattleman Association.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters: Pearl Buckles, Effie Danner and Edith Buckles; and four brothers: Clay, Claude, Eugene and Earl Buckles.

Survivors include his children: Hildred Pressnell, Patsy Colbaugh and Jimmy Buckles and wife, Angie, all of Elizabethton; Two Grandchildren: Jonathan Colbaugh, Shatona Williams; Four Great Grandchildren: Hayden Colbaugh, Melanie Thomas, Victor and Carlos Raminez; Three Sisters: Margaret Garland, Caro, Michigan, Brenda Taylor and husband, Bill, Johnson City, and Myrtle Pierce, Elizabethton; Two Brothers: H.J. Mr. Earl C. Buckles, 76, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, following an extended illness.

He was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Frank and Emma Buckles. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Buckles, Clay Buckles and Claude Buckles; three sisters, Effie Danner, Pearl Buckles and Edith Buckles.

Mr. Buckles was retired from East Tennessee Chair Company and had served as a constable for the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Helen Bowers Buckles, of the home; three daughters, Teresa Chambers and husband, Donnie, Hampton, Mary Sue Buckles, Elizabethton, Jamie Simerly and husband, Terry, of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Donna Ranshaw, Joshua Miller, Daniel Chambers, Terrina Gloss and Katie Simerly; one great grandson, Seth Ranshaw; three brothers, Ivan Buckles, Jay Buckles, both of Elizabethton, Paul Buckles, Kingsport; three sisters, Margaret Garland, Michigan, Brenda Taylor, Johnson City, Myrtle Pierce, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Buckles will be conducted at 2:30 PM Saturday, October 6, 2012, in the Riverside Chapel at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Richard Blevins and Rev. Willie Lunsford, officiating.

ELIZABETHTON - Paul Pierce, age 88, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Signature Health and Rehab in Elizabethton. Paul was born in Elizabethton to the late Martin Pierce, Sr and Shinola (Buckles) Pierce. In addition to his parents, Paul was also preceded in death by four brothers and sisters: Clarence Pierce, Reece Pierce, Callie Pierce and Aline Pierce.

Paul loved to be around people- laughing and chatting with anyone that would pass the time with him. A proud United States Army veteran, Paul had owned and operated his own business- Paul’s Handle Shop. Paul had also worked at Western Auto in Elizabethton for 25 years, as a courier at Carter County Bank, at White’s Grocery, and at Barnes Boring Hardware. Paul loved working on tools and in any kind of wood products. He was a loyal and faithful member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church and had also attended Watauga Valley Church and had served as a trustee there. Paul was also a member of the cemetery association at Wilson Cemetery in Stoney Creek.

Those left to cherish and remember Paul’s many wonderful memories include his wife of 62 wonderful years, Geraldine Pierce of the home and his daughter, Jennifer Harmon and son-in-law, Keith and his grandson, the apple of his eye, Colin Harmon; a brother, Martin Pierce, Jr. Several nieces, nephews, church family and extended family also survive.

A service to celebrate and honor Paul’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 9, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton with Paul’s former pastor of Union Hill, Pastor Roger Hayley and Pastor Kenny Lethcoe officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dennis Laws of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 10, 2023 in the Wilson Cemetery of the Stoney Creek Community. GREENEVILLE — Julia "June" Dugger, 85, went on to be with her Lord Jesus on Saturday, July 23, 2016, in Greeneville, Tennessee after an extended illness.

She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Elijah & Blonnie Buckles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Mack and Jim Buckles; her sister, Ethel Smith; and her daughter, Shirley Dugger Williams.

She was a member of the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. Surviving family members are her son, Stephen Dugger (Ginger); her grandchildren, Ashley Dugger Estep (Nick) and Blake Dugger (Brandi); her five great grandchildren, Gracie Estep, Levi and Cooper Estep, Jackson Nidiffer, Ava Dugger; and several nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with her home-going service beginning at 7 p.m.

The family would like to thank Takoma Regional Hospital and the Life Care Center of Greeneville, Amedisys Hospice, her Sunday School Class at Caldwell Springs and several friends and family members who helped her through her last days.

ELIZABETHTON - Betty Lou Hicks Shirley, 85, Elizabethton went home to be with her Lord Monday, April 8, 2019 at the Johnson City medical Center.

Born December 3, 1933 in Johnson City to the late Joseph & Armitta Bowers Hicks. She came to Elizabethton at an early age to live with her Uncle & Aunt: Albert & Grace Hicks. She was a 1952 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Betty was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was active in the WMU serving as Director and she loved working in Vacation Bible School. She was a homemaker, loved to cook, sew, and go camping and spending winters in Florida. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years: Eddie M. Shirley who passed away January 16, 2018, by a granddaughter, Rachael Whaley, her sisters: Irene Greene and Ada Mae Byrd, her brother: Joe Hicks and a sister-in-law: Betty Jean Shirley.

Survivors include her children: Debra Sanders & husband David, Johnson City, Eddie Martin Shirley II & wife Jane, Knoxville, Keith Shirley & wife Barbara, Kingsport and Diane Whaley & husband Mike, Gray. ELIZABETHTON - Edith Bowers Campbell, age 89, a loving mother and grandmother of 1209 Happy Valley Street, Elizabethton, TN formerly of 161 South Street in the Hunter Community passed away Friday, March 27, 2020 at the residence of her daughter.

A native of Carter County she was the daughter of the late John M. and Nettie Jenkins Bowers. Mrs. Campbell worked at the lunch counter in the S. H. Kress store and everyone in Elizabethton knew her and her friendly face. In the Hunter community she was known for her beautiful yard and garden. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Roan Campbell and several brothers and sisters. Dr. Floyd Earl May, 89, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at his home. He was the son of the late Roby Dewitt and Leila Bowers May and was born in Johnson County, though he lived most of his life in Carter County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dr. Joyce May, on
December 7, 2002 and his second wife, Lou Heaton Davidson May in 2014; three brothers, Dr. Joe May, Roby May, Riley May; two sisters, Violet Dewitt and Rosalie Merritt.

Dr. May was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during WWII. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University where he received a degree in chemistry and a 1956 graduate of the UT College of Medicine at Memphis. He served his residency in Anesthesiology at the UT Hospital in Knoxville before returning to Elizabethton where he practiced medicine since 1957. He was a former Chief of Staff at Carter County Memorial Hospital and a member of Hunter United Methodist Church. His hobbies included genealogy, farming and spending time with his family.

Mrs. Eunice Parlier Bowers of Route 2 Elizabethton has received word from the war department that her husband Pvt. Samuel M. Bowers, was killed in action at Luxembourg December 19.
He was reported missing one week prior to the death notice. Private Bowers has been in service about eight months and overseas about one week.
Before entering the service he was employed at the North American Rayon Corporation. He is survived by his wife, and three children, Bobby age four, Wilda, two and one-half, and Samuel M. Junior ten months. His mother, Mrs. Vera Bowers of Route 2 is also listed as a survivor.

ELIZABETHTON - Earl "Jabo" Grindstaff, age 86, of Elizabethton passed away surrounded by his family and friends on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Earl was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Thomas R.L. Grindstaff and Eva Brown Bowers Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Junior Grindstaff.

Earl was a devoted and loving husband, father, papaw, and great papaw. He was the owner and operator of Grindstaff Used Cars for over 52 years and he proudly served his country as a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. Earl was a member of Highlands Fellowship and was a volunteer fireman for the Elizabethton/ Carter County Fire Department. He was hardworking and determined and had an abundance of energy. He also enjoyed Nascar, woodworking and in fact he had taught a class in woodworking. Earl also enjoyed hunting and made hunting trips to Wyoming each year.

Charlotte was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Frank Russell Calloway and Allie Edith Bowers Calloway. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reverend Herman Rhea Crumley; two sisters, Gladys Peeks and Carrie Carley; and two brothers, Junior Calloway and Paul Calloway.
Charlotte was a member of Doe River Baptist Church, where she served as the organist. She was the matriarch and rock of the family and was a wonderful homemaker who loved to keep house. Her home was always spotless! Charlotte was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and she loved music and playing instruments, talking and socializing with her family and friends. She also enjoyed making no bake cookies for her family and special friends and always had a smile on her face, she literally never met a stranger.
Charlotte is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Marcella Mullins of Elizabethton, Betty and Tim Mason of Knoxville and Misty Crowe of Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Lynn Crumley and wife Michelle of Butler; and special grandchildren, Madison and Mariah Crowe of Elizabethton; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one special sister, Ina Mae Stanbery Campbell of Elizabethton.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of Charlotte Geneva Crumley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 19, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Reverend Daniel Fink officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joey Cole and Morgan Arrowood. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Family and friends may also visit the home of her daughter, Marcella Mullins, 100 Daytona Place, Apt. 1, Elizabethton, TN 37643. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, August 20, in the Wilson Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Charlotte’s grandchildren.

Mrs. Grace B. Joseph, 71, Hathburn Drive, Rockwood, Tenn., died Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at Roane Medical Center.
Mrs. Joseph was an employee of Gateway Cleaners and a member of Asbury Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Kate Bowers, a brother, Carl Bowers, and a sister, Ruth Taylor.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Benny T. and Karen Joseph, Kingston; two daughters, Susan J. Bowen, Techachapi, Calif., and Terri J. Jackson, Harriman; grandchildren, Jason and Justin Joseph, Amanda and Rebecca Bowen, Edgar Hunt Jr. and Samantha Jackson; three brothers, Floyd Bowers, Filmore Bowers and Charles Bowers, all of Elizabethton; two sisters, Effie Buckles, Elizabethton, and Wanda Bise, Hampton; and a special friend, Owen Gibson, Oak Ridge.

Floyd "Tete" Bowers, 75, formerly of 1721 Hwy. 91, Elizabeton, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at Life Care Center of Elizabeton following an extended illness.

Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Horace and Kate Williams Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Bowers Joseph and Ruth Bowers, and a grandson, Daniel Cambell.

Mr. Bowers was a member of Hunter First Batist Church. He retired from Ford Motor Company and had been a car dealer in Elizabethton.

Survivors, include his wife Barbara Bowers, two daughters, Sherry D. Campbell, of the home, and Julie Yankee, Elizabeton; four grandchildren, Tony Taylor, Jaclyn Campbell, Jessie Cowden, and Savannah Yankee, all of Elizabeton; a great grandchild, Makayla Taylor; two brothers, Charles Junior Bowers and Philmore Bowers, both of Elizabeton; and 2 sisters, Wanda Bice [of] Hampton, and Effie Buckles, Elizabeton.

The funeral services for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 7 p. m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Estep officiateing. The family will recieve friends at the funeral home from 5 untill 7 PM Thursday, prior to the Service. Betty Jane Bowers Brewer, 79, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at her residence. She was born September 4, 1942 in Bluff City to the late Jay N. and Helen Joey Oliver Bowers.
Betty was a homemaker. She attended Zion Baptist Church. She loved to work puzzles and quilt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Brewer, and a sister, Linda Lunceford.
Survivors include her son, James Hale Brewer, Elizabethton; her granddaughters, Haley and Inga Mia; four sisters, JoAnn Hess, Gray, Ga., Margaret (Tracy) Herman and Dorothy (Brent) Williams, Johnson City, and Wanda (Mike) Dougherty, Gate City, Va.; and three brothers, James Bowers, J.C. (Roberta) Bowers, Elizabethton, and Frank (Sherrie) Bowers, Attica, Mich.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at Oak Hill Freewill Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King officiating. Music will be provided by Ronnie Hall. Interment will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the WMU or the Penny Fund of Zion Baptist Church, 1982 Gap Creek Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643. The family would like to thank the residents of Courtyard that checked on Betty for us and two special caregivers, Shirley Cole and Lisa Lane. We would also like to thank Greg Williams and Angie and Joan Kiser, Pastor Alan King and the WMU from Zion Baptist Church, the Hospice workers and especially nurses Keith Greene and Vanessa Fletcher for all they did for Betty and the family during her illness.

Roy Lee Campbell Sr., 76, of Hampton, passed away at home on Thursday, September 19, 2019. He was the son of the late Jessie Monroe and Lyuna Ada Oliver Campbell. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Joanne; son, Roy and wife Carla and their family; grandson, Cameron Campbell; sister, Emma Honeycutt; brother, Bobby Campbell and wife Sue; brother-in-law, Carl Lewis; and sister-in-law, Nancy Shipley.
Family and friends are welcome at the home at any time. It was Roy's wish to be cremated with no formal services.

Flaura “Jeanette” Campbell, 81, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born on November 8, 1939 to the late Roy and Lena Buckles Bowers. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Campbell, and two brothers, Gary Bowers and Dairus Bowers.
Jeanette was a homemaker who loved to cook and bake for her family. She collected recipes and tried many of them on her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister to all her family and will be forever missed.
Survivors include two daughters, Jewell (Kenneth) Lowe and Leslie (Harold Lynn) Arnold, all of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, who she spoiled all their lives, Brandi (Michael) Hartsell, Michael Bowers and fiancée Courtney McCury and Kenny Lowe, all of Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Thea and Tegan Lowe; one sister, Judy (Shirrell) Bowers; and three brothers, Randy (Betty) Bowers, Dewey (Judy) Bowers and Willard Loveless, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as her faithful loving grand-pup, “Ranger,” who she adored.
The graveside service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, April 28, in the Garland Cemetery, Bulldog Hollow Road, with Mr. Kelley Bowers speaking. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kenny Lowe and Michael Bowers; her son-in-law, Harold Lynn Arnold; Joel Kress and Malcom Kress, Larry Bowers and Chuckie Bowers. Honorary pallbearers will be all nephews and nieces, Tommy Campbell, Kenneth Lowe and Shirrell Bowers.

Eric Scott Oliver, 50, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 9, 2021. He was born April 23, 1971 in Johnson City.
Scott was a graduate of Hampton High School. He was self-employed in the lawn business. Prior to that he was employed at Douglas Dynamic for 20 years. He loved fishing, hiking, loved being with friends and he loved his children with all his heart. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Scott was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carl and Nora Hardin, and his paternal grandparents, Stacey and Helen Oliver.
Survivors include his children, Sydney Oliver and Nicholas Oliver; his father, Stacey Oliver Sr. and his wife Ternia, Maiden, N.C.; his mother, Sherry Fortner and husband Kenneth, Elizabethton; a sister, Carla Schroeder and husband Tony, Maiden, N.C.; a brother, Stacey “Jimmy” Oliver, Elizabethton; a special aunt, Charlotte Williams; a special uncle, Carl Hardin Jr.; one niece, Alanna Sigmon; one nephew, Brandon Arthur; a great-niece, Baby Holland; many cousins and many friends he loved very much including his best friend, Dale Campbell, and all his friends at Douglas Dynamic.
