LENOIR, N.C. – Ruth Leona Arnold, age 96, of 1232-A Norwood St., Lenoir, N.C., and formerly of the Neva Community, Mountain City, Tenn., passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003, at her residence. She was a native of Johnson County and was born April 24, 1907, to the late John and Ollie Michaels Arnold. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Daniel Arnold; one son, Worley Sexton; one grandson, Mike Sexton; one granddaughter, Nancy Lee Morefield; three sisters, Maude Slemp, Susie Winters and Annie Greer; and two brothers, Clinton Arnold and Baxter Arnold. Ruth was a homemaker, enjoyed quilting and working puzzle books, and attended Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Reece, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., Ollie Presnell, Zionville, N.C., and Ruby Earp and husband Johnny, Lenoir, N.C.; two sons, Lonnie Arnold, Lenoir, N.C., and Connie Arnold, Wortburg, Tenn.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; special friends Rev. Jack Moses and wife Gladys of First Freewill Baptist Church of Lenoir, the late Charlie Hux and Joe Hux. Funeral services for Ruth Leona Arnold will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, from the chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Moses and Rev. Billy Stiles to officiate. Active pallbearers will be Tim Leonard, Sam Reid, Rick Townsend, David Mains, Garner Icenhour, David Sexton and Johnny Cress. Helen Marie Crowder, age 88, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at her residence. She was born on April 17, 1928 to the late Frank and Ella McVey Maxwell. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James 'J.C.' Crowder who passed on September 14, 2012 and an infant brother, Earl Ray Maxwell.

Helen was a devout Christian who loved her Lord and Savior faithfully. She was a loving wife and mother and devoted her entire life to her family. Everyone that knew her loved her. She loved working outside in her flowers.

'Was Blind But Now I See." To a lot of people, these are just words in a song. To Helen, it was a promise from her Lord and Savior. She was physically blind but now she has been made whole and can see.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Larry Wilson of Mountain City, TN, Phyllis and Steve Redden of Morristown, TN, Patricia and Randy Blevins of Mountain City, TN and Susan and Randy Simcox, also of Mountain City, TN; sons and daughters-in-law: Jimmy and Michele Crowder of Mountain City, TN and Randy and Clarice Crowder of Laurel Bloomery, TN; grandchildren: Amy Gillespie, Jeff Wilson, Craig Cornett, Dwayne Cornett, Tiffany Harris, Caitlin Simcox, Ethan Simcox, Ella Simcox, Cameron Crowder, Mikey Furches, Jaycee Blevins, A.J. Blevins, Abby Blevins, Christine Carter, Leslie Saults; twelve great grandchildren: sisters: Wilma Smith, Ruth Smith and Carol Holler; brothers: Dean Maxwell and wife Diana; special caregivers: Shirley Reece and her Hospice Nurse, Ivy; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

Funeral service for Helen will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Prater and Pastor Michael Icenhour officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Craig Cornett, Dwayne Cornett, Ron Carter, Mike Gillespie, Mikey Furches, A.J. Blevins, Cameron Crowder and Ethan Simcox. Honorary pallbearers are Jeff Wilson, Dr. Robert Griffith and all of Helen's nephews. The family will receive friends from 12-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the funeral.

Ruby Winters Dugger, age 88, formerly of 1815 Southside Road, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009 in the Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center following an extended illness.

She was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late John and Susan Arnold Winters. Mrs. Dugger was a member of Southside Christian Church. She had worked in food service at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and at McDonald's, Elizabethton. For many years, she enjoyed being a volunteer at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dugger was preceded in death by her husband, Tip Dugger, two sons: Terry Lee Dugger and Randy Tip Dugger, one daughter: Helen Ann Grindstaff, and one granddaughter: Jennifer Grindstaff.

Mrs. Dugger is survived by a son and daughter-in-law: David and Evelyn Dugger, Elizabethton, a daughter-in-law: Eva Dugger, Camden, TN, a son-in-law: Dennis Grindstaff, Elizabethton, grandchildren: Melissa Clemons, Kevin Grindstaff, Melanie Barnett, Terra Wampler, Derek Cornett, Sarah Younce, Rikki Dugger and J. L. Thomas, nineteen great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law: Seffie Dugger, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Dugger will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, September 27th in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Mr. Derek Cornett and Mr. Michael Koruschak, ministers, officiating. Music will be under the direction of No Name But His and Charles Dugger. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday in the chapel prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, September 28th at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Those attending are welcome to meet the family at 10:50 a.m. Monday at the cemetery for the service. Active pallbearers will be Steven Cornett, Ben Barnett, Dale Barnett, Joseph Younce, Kevin Grindstaff and Gary Simerly.

Ethel R. Woods, age 89, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on March 19, 1927 to the late Johnny and Maude Arnold Slimp. In addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her grandson, David Mullis; great grandchild, Daniel Mullis; brothers: Earl, Bascom, and Ray Slemp.

Ethel was a wonderful, kind, generous, and caring lady who made everyone feel most important. She adored her family, especially her grandchildren and her church family. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and loved her pets.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Eller and husband Danny; sisters: Mary Cornett and Nell May; grandchildren: Kevin Mullis and Chequita Meade Gorman and husband Peter; great grandchildren: Johnathan and wife Jessica, Angel, Jessica and Christian; great-great grandchildren: Gabe, Tyler, Javon, Collin and Chloe; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Steven Spencer, Chuck Morefield and Shannon Courtner officiating. Special music will be provided by the Calvary Baptist Church Choir. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Slemp Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rick May, Terry Slemp, Lee Farley, Kenneth Johnson, Clint Dunn and Charlie Morefield. Honorary pallbearers are Rick Farley, Willie Arnold, and Rev. Russell Ward.

Mary Lynn Cornett, age 90, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019 at the Mountain City Care Center. She was born on March 1, 1929 in Johnson County, TN to the late Johnny Edward Slemp and Maude Ann Arnold Slemp. In addition to her parents, Mary Lynn was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Cornett; sister, Ethel Woods, brothers, Earl Slemp, Bascom Slemp and Ray Slemp.

Mary Lynn enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and working puzzles. She enjoyed a lifetime of fishing. Mary Lynn was also very proud of her grapevine. She was a member of Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Millie Arnold and husband Willie, Judy Ellison and husband Jerry; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Arnold and wife Cheryll, Kristy Livermore and husband Eugene, Wesley Arnold and wife Sybil, and J.R. Ellison, great-grandchildren, Kaden Livermore, Ezra Livermore, Parker Derry, sister, Nell May, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2019 from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Shannon Courtner officiating. The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 prior to the funeral service. The graveside service and interment will follow at the Slemp Cemetery (Slemp Branch Rd.). Pallbearers will be, Steve Dunn, Wayne Vaught, Warren May, Ben May, James Brewer and Keith Gwinn. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Mullis, Danny Eller, Ed Walker, Willie Arnold, J.R. Ellison, Jerry Ellison, Wesley Arnold, Jeffrey Arnold, and Eugene Livermore.
