    MRS. CHAMBERS[sic] DIES AT HOME
    Mrs. Sallie Jane Chambers Meredith, 62, of Gap Creek, died at her home last night at 6:25, following an illness of pneumonia.
    The deceased was a native of Carter county, being the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David T. Chambers. She was born on Feb. 23, 1874. On Feb. 4, 1891, she was married to J. A. Meredith. To this union were born ten children all of whom are living, including nine sons, Willie, Claude, Roy, Lawrence, Ed, Harry, and Dave Meredith, Elizabethton; Joe Meredith, Johnson City; the Rev. John Meredith, Ridgetown, Canada; one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Treadway, Elizabethton. She is survived also by 29 grandchildren, four brothers, William Chambers, Wid Chambers, D. M. Chambers and Blaine Chambers; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Garrison and Mrs. R. B. Hathaway.
    Mrs. Meredith was one of the most beloved women in her community. She united with the Christian church at Valley Forge in 1891 and remained true to her faith, always letting the Master have his way and she humbly following. She loved her friends and neighbors and it was a great pleasure to acquire new friends, who immediately became attached to her by her kindly manner.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the home on Gap Creek Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, the Rev. J. N. Shepherd, of Milligan, and the Rev. A. Preston Grey of Kingsport, officiating. Interment will be made in the Meredith Cemetery.
    Active pallbearers will include nephews and are Hugh Chambers, Carroll Hathaway, Ernie Meredith, Carl Harrison, Bryan Meredith and Paul Headrick.
    Flower bearers will include nieces of the deceased and are Misses Jewette Hathaway, Lillie Chambers, Jack Chambers, Katherine Chambers, Donna Chambers, Hazel Chambers, Mesdames Viola Stephens, Dayton Isaacs, Eulalee Stephens, Ruby Pierce, Hattie Treadway, Eliza Vanhuss, Lizzie Belle Reed, Lizzie Hathaway, Fred Donnelly, Ruth Sams, Sam Dugger and Nellie Headrick.

    MRS. R. B. HATHAWAY
    Mrs. R. B. Hathaway, 72, of Valley Forge, died at her home Monday evening at 11:00 o'clock after a short illness.
    Mrs. Hathaway was a member of the Methodist Church at Valley Forge. She was the daughter of the late David T. and Nancy Grindstaff Chambers. Her son, Carroll Hathaway, preceded her in death on July 21, 1943.
    Survivors are her widower; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Campbell of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Mattie Shaw of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Jewette Riddle of Elizabethton; five sons, Mack, Hobert, Abraham, Edgar and Cale of Elizabethton; one sister, Mrs. Alice Garrison of Elizabethton; four brothers, D. M. Chambers of Johnson City, Win A., William and Blaine Chambers of Elizabethton; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
    Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body will be returned home Tuesday afternoon.

    Mrs. R. B. Hathaway, 71, died at her home in Valley Forge Monday evening at 11:00 o'clock after a short illness.
    Mrs. Hathaway was a member of the Methodist Church at Valley Forge. She was the daughter of the late David T. and Nancy Grindstaff Chambers. Mrs. Hathaway was married to Butler Hathaway September 3, 1893. Her son, Carroll preceded her in death July 25, 1943.
    Survivors include her widower, R. Butler Hathaway; three daughters, Mrs. Ina Campbell Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Mattie Shaw, Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Juette Riddle of Elizabethton; five sons, Mack, Hobart, Abraham, Edgar and Cale of Elizabethton; one sister, Mrs. Alice Garrison; four brothers, D. M. Chambers of Johnson City, Win A.; William and Blaine Chambers, Elizabethton; 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3:30 from the Methodist Church at Valley Forge with the Rev. Raymond Geisler in charge assisted by the Rev. Stockton and the Rev. Farrell Sparks.
    Burial will be made in Chambers Cemetery.
    Active pallbearers will be the following nephews of the deceased: Hugh Jenkins, Roy Meredith, Carl Garrison, Hugh Chambers, Ray Chambers, D. M. Chambers Jr., Charlie Suess, Monroe Stevens.
    Flower bearers will be the nieces and Ladies Sunday School Class of the Valley Forge Methodist Church and are requested to be at the church at 3:00.
    Honorary pallbearers will be: Steve Burnette, John Stout, Abe Little, Rufus Green, Charles N. Watson, Leon Cardwell, Sam Campbell, Ben Allen , P. P. Bain, Eugene Morrell, Dr. W. G. Frost, Dr. E. L. Caudill Jr, Dr. John Knapp, and all her friends and neighbors in the community.
    The body will be taken to the church at 2:30 to lie in state one hour before the service.

    Mr. Kyle Chambers, 94, Pine Hill Road, Elizabethton died Monday, September 4, 2006 in Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late William H. and Florene Vanhuss Chambers. Mr. Chambers was a homebuilder and had built over two hundred homes in the Elizabethton area. He also worked as an appraiser for Elizabethton Federal Bank where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He was very active in the community. Mr. Chambers was a member of First Baptist Church Elizabethton where he had served as Treasurer, Trustee and Deacon. He was a great example of a Christian gentleman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a sixty year member of the American Legion Post #49, Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Mary S. Chambers of the home and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Mr. Kyle Chambers will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 6, 2006 in First Baptist Church Elizabethton with Rev. Brent Seals and Rev. Bob Polk officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday following the funeral service at the church or at the residence, 605 Pine Hill Road, Elizabethton at other times. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 7, 2006 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Billy Shultz, Bill Shultz, Bruce Noles, Max Churchill, Ted Tipton and Richard Barker.

    Death Takes Squire Carroll Hathaway
    Carroll E. Hathaway, age 33, died in a Johnson City hospital Sunday morning at 4 o'clock after an illness of five months. Mr. Hathaway was a native of Carter county, son of Butler and Minerva Chambers Hathaway, prominent family of Carter county.
    He was a member of the Carter County Court, magistrate of the 14th district. For a number of years he was an automobile salesman for the Watauga Chevrolet Company of this city. He was employed in the pay roll department of the North American Rayon Corporation and was a member of Dashiel Lodge, No. 238, Elizabethton, R. D. Keller Chapter No. 214 Modern Woodman Local and of the Valley Forge Methodist church.
    Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Marie Morrell Hathaway; one son, Billy Carroll; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Hathaway; 3 sisters, Miss Juette Hathaway, Mrs. C. C. Campbell of Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. F. R. Shaw, Charlestown, Ind.; five brothers, Pvt. Cale Hathaway, U. S. Army; Abe, Mac, Edgar and Hobart of Elizabethton, and a number of nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Valley Forge Methodist church with the Rev. K. W. Baldwin officiating, assisted by Rev. Harry Leonard, and Rev. Laney. Burial will be made in Chambers cemetery. Masons will have charge at the grave.
    Active pallbearers will be the nurses of the St. Elizabeth Hospital and member of the Ladies Bible Class, Methodist church at Valley Forge.

    She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Calvin William Luc; her parents; sisters Dorothy Edna Meredith, Ridgetown, Ontario, and June Meredith Blackburn, Johnson City; brothers Harold Marvin and Thomas Glenn Meredith of Michigan; brother Edgar Keith Meredith and sister-in-law Bernell, Leesburg, FL. Survivors include one son, Alan Thomas Luc, wife Susan, McNeill, MS; two grandchildren, Misty Dawn Luc Anderson, husband Daniel, New Orleans, and Jesse Alan Luc, wife Amanda; two great grandchildren, Drake Alan and Anna J.     Marjorie attended Milligan College and ETSU, graduated from Appalachian Hospital School for Nurses, earned a BSN from Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Nursing, New Orleans, and a Master’s Degree from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine with an emphasis in Public Health Nursing. She completed postgraduate studies at the University of New Orleans.
    She served as 1st Lt., U.S. Army Nurse Corps in WW II. She was an American Red Cross nurse. In New Orleans she was an OB/GYN nurse at Ochsner Clinic, an Occupational Nurse at International Harvester, an Instructor in Medical/Surgical Nursing at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, an Assistant
    Professor of Nursing in Medical/Surgical and Public Health Nursing at LSU Medical Center School of Nursing. She served as as Associate Director of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing for 17 years and as Interim Executive Director prior to her retirement. Her professional career was devoted to nursing education. She was elected to serve eight terms on the Board of Directors for the National League for Nursing and held offices in many professional and civic organizations. She was a charter member of Epsilon Nu Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and a member of ETA Chapter, Delta Omega, National Honor Society for Graduate Students in Public Health.
    In addition to her commitment to nursing education, she was an active supporter of Veterans Affairs. She was a charter member of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, a charter member of Women in Military Service for the American Memorial Foundation, Arlington, VA, and a charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. Her name is on the Veterans’ Wall of Honor in Elizabethton, TN.
    She was a charter member of Elysian Fields Church of Christ and Crowder Boulevard Church of Christ in New Orleans. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Mr and Mrs Sunday School Class in Johnson City.
    The family of Marjorie Eleanor Meredith Luc will receive friends from 10:30 am to 11:30 am Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City. A private inurnment service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park and will be conducted by nephews Jeff and John Blackburn.

    A native of Carter County, he was the son of A.L. "John" Treadway, Elizabethton, and the late Lillian Meredith Treadway.
    Mr. Treadway was a varsity basketball letterman at the University of Tennessee. Upon graduation, he returned to Carter County to begin a very satisfying career as Vocational Agriculture teacher at Hampton High School for 21 years. He continued his education, receiving a master's degree from U.T. in 1970. He was superintendent of Carter County Schools from 1974 until 1979, when he joined the State Department of Education as Adult Basic Education Supervisor for East Tennessee. He was a member of the House of Representatives in the Tennessee Legislature for one session in 1985 and returned to the State Department of Education, where he worked until retiring in 1992. He was an active member and former board member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton.

    Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Patricia Taylor Treadway, of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law: Patti Anne Treadway and Meredith and Tracy Trott, all of Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Laura Meredith Trott, Elizabethton; one grandson, Joseph "Joey" Trott, Elizabethton; and one sister, Peggy Jane Treadway, Elizabethton.

    Miss Peggy Jane Treadway, 1118 Powder Branch Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, May 9, 2008, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

    A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late A.L. ?John? and Lillian Meredith Treadway. She retired as Chief Medical Laboratory Technologist at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital and later taught biology at Happy Valley High School.

    She received her Bachelor?s Degree from East Tennessee State University and a MLT Degree from St. Mary?s Hospital, Knoxville. Miss Treadway was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Treadway.

    Survivors include a sister-in-law, Patricia Treadway, Elizabethton; two nieces, Patti Anne Treadway and Meredith Trott and her husband, Tracy Trott, Elizabethton; a great-niece, Laura Meredith Trott, Fort Worth, TX; and a great-nephew, Joseph Theodore Trott, Elizabethton. Many special cousins and a dear friend, Jennie Ottinger, also survive.

    Funeral service for Miss Peggy Jane Treadway will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Sunday, May 11, 2008, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Mr. Bob Shannon minister officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the funeral service or at the residence, 1118 Powder Branch Road, Elizabethton at other times.

    Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 12, 2008, in Patton-Simmons Cemetery.     PINEY FLATS - Marvin Ray "Buck" Johnson, Sr., 74, of 571 North Pickens Bridge Road, Piney Flats, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

    Mr. Johnson was born on November 9, 1942, in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Cursey and Lillie Chambers Johnson.

    He was an active member of the Piney Flats First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Before his illness he was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir, worked with the youth, was on the youth committee, helped with the children's choir and drove the van for the senior citizens.

    He graduated from Hampton High School in 1960 and received his B. S. Degree in Mathematics and Education from Milligan College in 1964. He received his Master's Degree and forty-five hours plus from East Tennessee State University. In June of 1993 he retired from the Sullivan County School System with thirty years of service of which twenty years were served as Assistant Principal at Sullivan Central High School. Until his illness he was Recycling Coordinator for Sullivan County and served on many state committees.

    Mr. Johnson was a former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #4 of Piney Flats. He was also a past President of the Piney Flats Ruritan Club.

    He enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially fishing. He also liked watching baseball and boxing.

    Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of over fifty-three years, whom he married on June 27, 1964; Betty Osborne Johnson; one son, Marvin Ray Johnson, Jr.; one sister, Janice Sue Rash and husband, Carl "Buddy" Rash, of Bristol, TN and two nephews, Chris Rash and Greg Rash of Bristol, TN.

    A service to honor the life of Mr. Johnson will be conducted on Monday, August 7, 2017, at 8:00 PM at the Piney Flats First Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Davis and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the church prior to the service on Monday and any time at the residence.

    Nancy was the daughter of the late W. Dudley and Myrtle Grindstaff.

    She was a graduate of University of Tennessee and a retired dietician from Johnson City Medical Center.

    In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Collins in 2013 and grandchildren, David Noah & Hannah Grace Hoffman.

    Nancy is survived by daughters, Clark Collins of Johnson City, Eve Hoffman and husband Jim of Roswell, GA, and Elizabeth Carmack and husband Gary of Johnson City, several cousins, nieces, nephews and sister in law, Sandra Collins.

    ELIZABETHTON - Kay M. Edens, 76, of Elizabethton, TN passed away on July 12 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

    Mrs. Edens was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Elbert and Blanche Hyder Meredith and Lucille Meredith who graciously stepped in to help raise Kay after her mother died. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold D. Edens and a brother and sister-in-law Willie G. and Patsy Meredith.

    Mrs. Edens is survived by a son, Mark Edens (Anna), a daughter, Beth Tester (Larry), and the greatest joy of her life- her granddaughter, Eden Tester. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Jean White and Nancy Alsup, a special niece, Carolyn Dawson, and a special nephew who called weekly, John Meredith. She also leaves behind special friends Gilda Reed, Judy Scalf, Pam Slayton, and Georgia Jaynes.

    Mrs. Edens was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Christian Church and the Maggie Kyte Ladies’ Circle.

    Kay was a 1964 graduate of Happy Valley High School and a 1966 graduate of Steed College. She retired from the VA Medical Center as a Medical Record Technician.

    Kay was also a homemaker who enjoyed traveling, camping, cooking, shopping, canning, and freezing. She also enjoyed college football and basketball; especially the TN Vols teams. She also enjoyed being outdoors, nature, and the beauty of God’s creation.

    ELIZABETHTON - Patti Anne Treadway, of Elizabethton, passed away at the age of 69, on July 8, 2022, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton, TN. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Randolph "Joe" and Patricia Taylor "Pat" Treadway. Patti earned her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1975 with a major in Interior Design and her Master of Arts degree in Teaching from East Tennessee State University in 1980.

    Patti devoted her life to nurturing and educating children and encouraging others. She taught

    Kindergarten and Head Start at Happy Valley Elementary for 35 years. She loved her students and worked tirelessly to provide each child with an environment that was both educational and inspirational, allowing them to grow academically, express themselves artistically, and experience moments of unbridled joy. Her mantra was to allow each child to have their best day, every day.

    Those who surrounded Patti knew her kindness, warmth, rich expertise, and collaborative spirit. Her focus was always outward as she lifted and included all others around her. Her legacy will live on through the lives of those she taught, mentored, loved, and inspired.

    Patti was known for her creativity and artistic talent. She loved to create and teach scrapbooking, and she made beautiful scrapbooks for her family and friends. She also assisted her family and friends with numerous home interior and design projects. She had an uncanny ability to see color and better utilize space in any room or design project. She was a lifelong reader, loved to discuss plot components, and wrote beautiful short stories.

    Patti was the prepared member of her family. Her Christmas presents were perfectly wrapped, and her trunk included enough raingear and snacks to get her family through any situation in Neyland stadium because she knew they never remembered to bring anything. To be loved by Patti was to be paid attention to in detail. She was the best storyteller in the family. A second mother to her niece and nephew, and a beloved sister. She will be missed beyond measure.

    She was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton, where she had taught Sunday School and served as a youth sponsor.

    Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Meredith Trott, and husband Tracy, of Elizabethton; niece, Laura Trott and husband Jason Yoo, of Atlanta, Georgia; nephew, Joey Trott of Knoxville; beloved aunts and uncles, Kathy and Wayne Riley of Baldwin, Georgia, and Dottie and Jim Riley of Woodstock, Georgia; special friend, Leonard Febuary; best friends, June and Roger Shepherd all of Elizabethton; numerous cherished cousins and friends; and Jasper her devoted Bichon Havanese.

    The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the caregivers and staff at Ivy Hall Nursing Home and Amedisys for the loving care that was given to Patti.
