DEAD Victim of Heart Attack; Coroner Called Lum Shell, 53, well known farmer of Shell Creek community, was found dead, a victim of a heart attack, by his wife, about 3 p.m. yesterday.
The body was found about one fourth of a mile from the Shell home after Mrs. Shell had begun to search for her husband when he did not return at the appointed time and did not answer her calls.
The victim had had several other attacks before the fatal one, which occurred while he was looking over his crops.
Coroner W. T. Ferguson investigated the death.
Funeral services will be held from the home Friday afternoon. Interment will be in the Perry Cemetery, Shell Creek.

Thursday, January 18, 2001, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief
illness.
Mrs. Deloach was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late
Daniel and Missouri Clark Shell. She was also preceded in death by her
first husband, Spencer Singleton, her second husband, Rev. Virgil Deloach,
and by nine brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Deloach was a member of Morgan Branch Free Will Baptist Church and
was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Anna Singleton,
Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Tommy Gould, Alexander
City, Ala.; a sister, Dorothy Guinn, Roan Mountain; and three grandsons,
Randy Singleton, Elizabethton, Tim Gould, Valdosta, Ga., and Tommy Gould,
Anderson, S.C. Six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also
survive.

Dorothy M. Shell Guinn, age 91, of 115 Bud Miller Road, Roan Mountain, TN., died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at the Charles A. Cannon, Jr., Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, TN (Shell Creek Community) , she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Loraine Clark Shell. Mrs. Guinn was the last charter member of Morgan Branch Freewill Baptist Church, Roan Mountain. She was a homemaker and a foster care parent to over 30 children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Guinn, August 29, 1976, two sons, Clifton and Harold Guinn; four sisters, eight brothers, and one grandson, Mike Montgomery.

Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Rev. John Montgomery, Johnson City, Betty and Jack Hoilman, Roan Mountain, Pam and Rev. Danny Cooke, Roan Mountain; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie and Lola Guinn, Richard and Barbara Guinn, all of Roan Mountain; 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, one great great grand daughter. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Morgan Branch Freewill Baptist Church, Roan Mountain with Rev. Keith Gwynn and Rev. Jim Storie officiating. The graveside service and interment will follow in the Richardson Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from Mrs. Guinn's grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be: Deacons of Morgan Branch Freewill Baptist Church, Honorary Ministers, Rev. Dale Miller, Rev. Joe Winters. Mrs. Matherly was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William M. and Stella Shell McKinney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Matherly, February 10, 1997, and by two brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Matherly operated the Tastee-Freez and Maxine's Sycamore Drive-In for a number of years until her retirement. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include one other daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Maynard Campbell, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Sammy and Sally Matherly, Elizabethton; five sisters, Lilly Lyons, Hampton, Missouri Brown, Creola Stanley, Agnes Walker and Willie Jean Baughman, all of Elizabethton; and six grandchildren, April Matherly, Raymond Williams and his wife, Rebecca, Brian Williams, Carter Campbell, Tina Reece and her husband, Tim, and Josh Campbell. Homer Shell, 70, of Elizabethton, entered into rest Sunday, February 3, 2019, at Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth, Ohio.
Mr. Shell was the son of the late Burl and Iva King Shell from Roan Mountain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma "Peach" Shell; brothers, Roy King, Charles Shell and Clyde Shell; sister, Barbara Manring; and son, Kraig Kiser.
Homer was a lifelong resident of Carter County. He was a retired machinist from Alemite Corporation. Before his health deteriorated, he enjoyed farming and tinkering with old cars and trucks.
Homer is survived by five children, Kevin Kiser, Lisa Evans, Kristi Perkins, Daniel Shell and wife Donna Mitchell-Vitoux and Jason Shell and wife Sandy. He leaves to cherish his memory the following grandchildren, Erin Kiser, Emily Kiser, Kolby Evans, Kylee Evans, Alleea Shell, DJ Shell, Eric Vitoux, Elizabeth Vitoux, Kaylen Shell and Jasy Shell. Additionally, he leaves treasured friends, Bud Kent and Roger Weaver, along with caretakers, Beulah "Mutt" Williams and Irene Birkner.

Richard A. "Rick" Guinn, 65, of Roan Mountain, was born May 11, 1953 at the home of his parents, on Bud Miller Road, Roan Mountain. On Thursday, October 4, 2018, Rick received divine healing from our Lord, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy Shell Guinn; a daughter, Melissa McMahan; and a grandson, Jerry "Bubba" Potter. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Clifford Guinn, Harold Guinn and Norma Jean Montgomery.
Rick earned a living and provided for his family as a master craftsman and expert carpenter for 51 years. He loved the mountains of upper East Tennessee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Cloudland football. He loved spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren play sports and dance. He loved cookouts and picnics.
Rick is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara Jones Guinn; two sons, Chad and wife Katrine of Cameron, N.C., and Derrick and wife Carissa of Roan Mountain; two daughters, Sue Ann Guinn Foster of Roan Mountain and Johnnie Guinn Russ of Johnson City. Rick's pride and joy was his 13 wonderful and loving grandchildren, Dylen Markland, Macy Markland, Meagen Markland, Kenzie Foster, Lilly Guinn, Elijah Guinn, Mikah Guinn, Hadassah Guinn, Blake Dugger, Kaila McMahan, Danielle McMahan, Emma McMahan and Erica Guinn. Pam was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a loving sister and aunt. Words cannot describe how much she loved her Lord.
Pamela was a graduate of Cloudland High School. She was a great pastor’s wife and was willing to do whatever was needed to help her husband and the church. Those who knew her loved her, and God had blessed her with a beautiful voice to sing, especially the song “Under His Wings.” And she only used it for God’s Glory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Dorothy Shell Guinn; brothers, Harold Guinn, Rick Guinn and infant Clifford; and a sister, Norma Montgomery.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 47 years, Danny Cooke; two daughters, Melanie (Todd) Guy and Elizabeth (Bobby) Guinn; and a son, of the home, Daniel “Jake” Cooke. ELIZABETHTON - Thomas “Dempsey” Shell, Sr., age 85, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Dempsey was born in Shell Creek, Tennessee to the late Ernest B. Shell and Delcie Dugger Shell. In addition to his parents, Dempsey was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Starling; a brother-in-law, Charles W. Snodgrass; and a daughter-in-law, Donna C. Shell.

Dempsey was a loving husband and father and a United States Navy and Marine Corp Reserves veteran- having served as a radar man aboard the USS Noa DD 841. He was a real estate broker and developer for over 40 years and was the owner and operator of Shell Associates Real Estate and Development. Dempsey was instrumental in the development of Quail Hollow and West Links subdivisions. He was a member of the City Council, a life member of BPOE, the JC’s, and a member of the National and State Association of Realtors and NETAR. Dempsey had worked with the American Red Cross and enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting in the West and in Alaska. He loved to read, loved living at Watauga Lake for the past 30 years and loved his German Shepherds, “Shane”.

Those left to cherish Dempsey’s legacy and memory include his wife of 64 years, Linda (Snodgrass) Shell; his son, Dempsey Shell Jr and partner Marti Johnson; his brother, Ladd Shell and wife Tessie and their family; his sister, Judy Lyons and her family; a special friend, Kenny Fortner; a special son, Doug Crockett and the Lohse family in Wyoming.

Sue was one of six children, the fourth daughter born to the late Samuel Guy Luntsford, Sr. and the late Bonnie Shell Luntsford of Johnson City. As a young woman she graduated from Science Hill High School, and afterwards attended ETSU. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City. Sue lived most of her life in the Atlanta area and was an avid sports fan for the Atlanta Braves. She also greatly enjoyed music and singing, especially her beloved hymns, and loved playing Bridge. During these years in Atlanta she reared her three children: Dr. Steven Scott Broyles (Jan – deceased), Pamela Broyles Lizzio (Bill, Sr.), John Alfred Broyles, IV (Linda); her siblings: Jane Luntsford Childers (Carl – deceased), Samuel Guy Luntsford, Jr. (Jan), and Nancy Luntsford Osborne (Jim). Sue is also survived by eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and their families. She is pre-deceased by her siblings; Charlotte Luntsford Steffner (Ed) and Ann Luntsford Patton (Tom).

There will be a private graveside committal service at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

Faye Buck Forbes, 90, of Olde Well Road, Hudson, N.C., passed away Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness.

Born March 29, 1914, in Carter County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late John and Savana Clark Buck. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 2001 by her husband of 55 years John R. Forbes. She had been previously married to Bruce Perry, who died while serving in the Navy in World War II.

Mrs. Forbes was a retired seamstress and homemaker who won many awards for crochet and quilting. She was a graduate of Cloudland High School, where she was captain of the girls' basketball team. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law; a daughter; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and a sister. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The graveside service for Mrs. Forbes was conducted at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 13 at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

Louise Eggers Potter, 92, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Christian Care Center of Bristol. She was born in Butler, Tenn., the daughter of the late Jobe Eggers Sr. and Bertha Clarke Eggers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Fred Potter; three sons, Ronnie, Michael and Jonathan Potter; five brothers, Edward "Bus" Eggers, Bob Eggers, Doran Eggers, Charles Eggers and Lane Eggers; and three sisters, Elma Eggers, Hope Miller and Geraldine Brewer.
Louise was a resident of Bristol and Elizabethton and a member of Brookside Baptist Church. She faithfully served alongside her husband, Rev. Fred Potter, in various churches and ministries. Together they co-founded Brookside Baptist Church, Tri-State Children's Home and Charity Baptist Missions. She loved to travel, fish and playing games. Louise was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice Gentry; three grandchildren, Tim Hale and wife Donna, Melanie Trinkle and husband Tommy and Melissa Carrier Vincill and husband Sam; three great-grandchildren, David Motley, Kasey Hale and Hannah Vincill; one brother, Jobe Eggers Jr. and wife Billie; one sister, Lucille Carr; her furry dog friend, Flossie; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, August 2, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Michael Nixon and Rev. Ricky Potter officiating. The committal service and interment will be held Friday, August 3, at 1 p.m. in Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Tenn. Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Hale, Tommy Trinkle, David Motley, Sam Vincill and the men of Brookside Baptist Church. Judy B. Shell Cole was born 1940 to Carrie Lee and Carl Shell in Banner Elk N.C. (both deceased.) She lived her early years happily in the Central Community in Johnson City. She married the love and joy of her life, Leslie Cole in 1958.They lived in eight states from California to Virginia and in Germany when Leslie moved as an Army officer. She is survived by 3 wonderful children, Cheri Cole-Jenkins (Dale) Cincinnati, Ohio; Shonna Cole, Knoxville, and Jason Leslie Cole, (Amy) Garland, Texas; 4 grandchildren Carrie Cate Jenkins Rathgeb, Laura Leslie Jenkins Reed, John M. Bollenbacher, and Miriya Bollenbacher; 3 great grandchildren Lennox Cole Rathgeb, Zara Rathgeb and Evelyn Reed. Judy had beloved friends whom she loved in Tennessee, Florida and in Europe.

Judy attended Happy Valley High School and graduated from Training school (now University School) in 1958. She also studied anthropology in Heidelberg Germany, received her nursing degree at East Tennessee University, and her Nurse Practitioner degree from University of Kansas Medical School in Kansas City Kansas. She was Board certified in both Ob-Gyn and Family Practice and worked in Tennessee, Virginia, Missouri and Kansas. She taught in the Registered Nurse Program at East Tennessee State University and taught occasional classes in the Ob-Gyn department of the Quillen Medical school in its early years. Most of her practitioner time was spent caring for the poor in the Appalachian Mountains. She obtained a grant and established an Ob-Gyn clinic for underserved patients that became the pattern for the state of Tennessee obstetrical care standards. She loved her patients and fought for quality care for them.

Judy and Leslie spent their retirement years living in Florida in the winter and Johnson City in summer. They acquired their love of travel when living in Germany in the 1960’s. They traveled extensively visiting all 50 states and 68 countries. Their favorite places were Ireland and Bavaria. When the ravages of age made independent travel difficult, they traveled via cruise ships, enjoying the company of each other as much as the world around them. Judy’s hobbies included reading, gourmet cooking, entertaining and spending time with her family.

Funeral services for Judy B. Shell Cole will be conducted on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 12:00 P.M. in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services. Burial will follow in the Happy Valley Memorial Park, at 1:00 P.M. with family members and friends serving as pallbearers.

Dan Winters, age 97, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the Waters of Roan Highland Nursing Home. Dan was born in Roan Mountain to the late Hamm and Rosa Richardson Winters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline McKinney Winters; his son, Richard Winters; five sisters; and one brother.

Dan retired from North American Rayon Corporation where he had worked in the spinning department. He was a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church for 77 years, serving as an elder for 75 of those years. He enjoyed gardening and was a beekeeper.

Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Janet Potter and husband Steve, of Elizabethton; a daughter-in-law, Norma Winters; two grandchildren, Daniel Keith Winters and wife Dawn and Jennifer Street and husband Henry, all of Roan Mountain; three great grandchildren, Richie Winters, Danny Winters and Nicki Jenkins and husband Thomas; and two great great grandchildren, Kinlee and Maddie Jenkins. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Dan Winters will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church in Roan Mountain with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, Rev. John Henry McCoury and Rev. Tull Oaks, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Tuesday; or at the residence of his grandson, Daniel Keith Winters, 243 Winters Road, Roan Mountain, TN, at any time.

The graveside service will follow in the Winter's Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Richie Winters, Danny Winters, Henry Street, Thomas Jenkins, Ken Shell and Eddie McAllister. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Turbyfill, Lee McCoury, Don Morgan, Garry McKinney, Jack Harris, Luther Krider, Randolph Winters, David Winters, Tom Winters, Glen Maupin and Harold Maupin.

Pansy was born in Minneapolis, in the High Country of North Carolina to Jim and Nola Winters. She had a twin sister, Grace Bevan and sisters, Emma Caraway, Elsie Hall; brothers, William, Albert, Sam, Ray and Craig. Pansy grew up on Big Horse Creek and attended church at the Lewis Chapel there.

After World War II, Pansy married Verne H. Shook in 1947, also from Minneapolis. They lived briefly on Big Horse Creek before moving north to Metuchen, New Jersey to take advantage of the housing construction boom in that area.

Pansy was a homemaker while raising her daughters prior to working for the Chanel Corporation in Piscataway, New Jersey until her retirement at age 65. She was an active member of Christ Community Church in Piscataway, as well as one of their longest standing members.

She enjoyed staying active gardening, antiquing and sharing her happy memories of North Carolina.

Pansy went to spend the winter in Kauai with her daughter LaVerne in 2016, as she had often done in the past - only to remain there.

She is survived by her two daughters, LaVerne Bishop of Kalaheo, Kauai, Yvonne Prohaska (husband-Bernard) of East Brunswick, New Jersey; and granddaughter, Ariel Lilinoe Bishop.

Visitation will be held on April 24th from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, 296 Ash Street, Newland, N.C. 28657 to be followed by a 12:00 graveside ceremony at Mount Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, 1161 Balm Highway, Banner Elk, N.C.

She will be missed by all.

Howard S. Gouge Sr., 88, Dave Buck Road, Johnson City, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Dosser and Minnie Winters Gouge. Mr. Gouge was a retired produce salesman and carpenter. He was
of the Baptist faith. He had served in the U.S. Army and Coast Guard and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. D.C. Byrd and the Rev. John Vance officiating.
Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Gouge Family Cemetery (Heaton Ridge Road), Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, will be Buddy Davis, Danny Davis, Nathan Gouge, Patrick Gouge, Joshua Gouge and Eugene Gouge.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews.
