The dates, as well as the spelling of his first name on the marker, are all incorrect.

ROAN MOUNTAIN – It is with extreme sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Sarah J. Whitehead, 88, Roan Mountain, who passed away Monday June 1, 2009, in the Roan Highland Nursing Center after an extended illness.

She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Jacob and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

Sarah loved to work in her flowers and vegetable garden. She freely shared her bounty with friends and neighbors and family, whatever their needs may be. She was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Whitehead; and a brother, George Guinn.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: Leon & Louise Whitehead, Roan Mountain; Two Daughters and One Son-In-Law: Della Whitehead, Elizabethton, Loretta and Jim McKinney, Roan Mountain; Grandsons: Michael McKinney and wife, Raquel, Piney Flats, Chris Whitehead and wife Shannon, Roan Mountain, and Mark McKinney and wife, April, of Knoxville; Two Great Grandsons; Hunter McKinney and Blake Whitehead; Three Great Granddaughters: Lilly Kate McKinney, Maggie & Rachael McKinney; Four Sisters: Myrtle Elliott, Roan Mountain, Mae Pate, Johnson City, Lea McKinney, Elk Park, North Carolina, and Dorothy Forbes, Elizabethton; Two Brothers: Tommy Guinn, Roan Mountain, and Otis Guinn, Elizabethton; Several Nieces & Nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Pastor Delaney Berry officiating.

Myrtle Marie Guinn Elliott, 92, Roan Mountain, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at the residence of her daughter & son-in-law, Iva Lee & Husband Bruce Dingler, Summerville, South Carolina following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jacob & Blanche Arnett Guinn. She had lived in South Carolina for the past seven years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Elliott was a member of Morgan Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard C. Elliott who died June 1, 2008, by one sister, Sarah Whitehead and two brothers: George & Otis Guinn.

Survivors include her three daughters: Iva Lee Dingler and husband Bruce, Summerville, South Carolina, Bernice Lewis and husband Charlie, Jonesborough and Helen Reed & husband Timothy, Goose Creek, South Carolina. Her Grandchildren; Johnathan Shipley, Kenneth Reed, Kee Reed, Debbie Goins, Linda Rogers, Laura Dingler and Bruce Dingler, Jr.; 10 Great Grandchildren and three Great Great Grandchildren. Her sisters: Wanda Pate, Lee McKinney and Dorothy Forbes. One Brother: Thomas Guinn.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tull Oaks and Rev. Greg Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain Nelson Cemetery. Music will be provided by Dale & Denise Cunningham. JOHNSON CITY - Wanda Mae Guinn Pate, 94, of Johnson City, passed way on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at her residence. She was surrounded by caregivers, friends, and close nephew, Donnie Pate, who will all miss her dearly.

She was a lifelong resident of Carter County, daughter of the late Jack and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

Wanda loved life. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Bill, making a lifetime of memories across the world. Back home at home she spent time crafting, collecting, and attending service at Grace Gospel Church.

She was born on December 10, 1933, in Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of Jacob Guinn and Blanche Arnett Guinn. Rhoda was a member of the Little Freewill Baptist Church and enjoyed working in her yard and garden. She loved to work on her wood pile.

Mr. Guinn was a native of Carter County, a son of the late Jacob & Blanche Arnett Guinn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Sarah Whitehead; a brother: George Guinn; and a niece: Loretta Whitehead McKinney.
Mr. Guinn was of the 1961 class at Cloudland High School. He served in the United States Army and the Tennessee National Guard. He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238. Nicola was a native of Elk Park. She was a housewife and mother most of her life and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. She was the daughter of the late George Turbyfill and Lena Bare Turbyfill.

She is survived by sister Edith Duckworth, daughters Wanda Stines and Kim Honeycutt, son in laws James Carr, Robert Cox and Kelly Honeycutt, sister in laws Lola (Rob) Cox, Thelma, Ginny, Joan Blackwell and Betty Jo Choucalas. Grandchildren Kevin (Kim) Gotch, Paula Rietman, Brandy May, David Redepenning, Jena Stines, Grant, Lucas (Holli) Honeycutt. Great Grandchildren Dawn May and Ashton Stines. Several nieces and nephews.

Ruby was a graduate of Cloudland High School and worked for ARA services at Levi's and for the Carter County Court Clerk's office. She was a member of Elizabethton church of Christ. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling with friends and being with her family.

The family wishes to thank her caretakers Jan Stafford and Lee Garland, the physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists at SSH PCU unit for their compassionate care.

Her wish was to be cremated. Visitation services will be at Memorial Funeral Chapel Sunday Feb 12th from 1 to 3 p.m. Service at 3 p.m. with Pastor Roby Ellis officiating.

He was a native of Carter County, a son of the late Henry and Destie Johnson Blackwell. He was also preceded in death by a Daughter, Judy Blackwell; Sisters: Glodie Blackwell Pierce, Virginia Potter & Opie Osborne; Brothers: Coeburn Blackwell, Claude Blackwell, Elmer Blackwell and C.J. Blackwell. John worked as a millwright, his hobby was working on yard equipment. John was a US Air Force veteran, and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Big Springs Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years Thelma Murray Blackwell; three children: Dale Martin & wife Kim, Kingsport, Ed Blackwell and wife Becky, Johnson City, Ted Blackwell of the home. Two Grandchildren: Summer Morton and Brandi Blackwell, one Great Grandchild Kellsie Hicks. Two Sisters: Ruby Blackwell Canaway, Elizabethton and Edith Blackwell Duckworth, Oak Ridge. The service for Mr. Blackwell will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 in the Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Glen Layfield officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. The family would like to give a special "Thank You" to Judy Little for her loving care for always being there for the family, Doctors and Staff of the Virginia Hospital. ELIZABETHTON — C.J. Blackwell, age 78, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 25, 2016, from his residence, following a brief illness.

C.J. was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Henry and Destie Johnson Blackwell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Goldie Pierce, Virginia Potter and Opie Osborne; and three brothers, Coburn Jack Blackwell, Claude Blackwell and Elmer Blackwell.

C.J. had been employed as a millwright and was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church of Johnson City. He had a love of music that had endured throughout his life and was an avid Tennessee Vols fan, especially Peyton Manning. He was a "rock hound" and enjoyed playing and singing, and shared his love for music by singing Gospel music in churches and nursing homes.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 16 years, Virginia "Ginny" Whaley Blackwell, of the home; two sisters, Ruby Caraway, of Elizabethton and Edith Duckworth, of Oak Ridge, TN; and a brother, J.L. Blackwell, of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great great nieces and great great nephews, also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of C.J. Blackwell will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 28, 2016, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Charlie Biggs and Rev. Roy Yelton, officiating. Music will be provided by GInny Blackwell and Seth Montgomery.

Norma was a member of the Valley Forge Christian Church where she was a member of the church choir. She loved quilting, sewing and knitting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Steve Dugger, November 2018; two brothers, Jack and B. Irick; and a sister, Vesta Bowman.

He was born June 24, 1932, in Brasstown, N.C., a son of the late Nathan A. Buchanan Sr. and Lona Hughes Buchanan. He was married to Edith E. Ramsey Buchanan June 11, 1953. She survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.
He retired as an inspector for the Ford Motor Company after 32 years of service.

A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Isaac and Nettie English Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by a Daughter: Marsha Kay Buchanan, who passed away in 1964; Grandson: Christopher Buchanan, who passed away in 2009; three Sisters and four Brothers. Kelly was a Member and Deacon at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Elk Park. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and loved his family.

Surviving is his loving Wife of 64 years: Eunice Brewer Buchanan; Son: Colin Buchanan and wife, Barbara, of Whitaker Branch; Great-grandchildren: Makenna Buchanan and Lexie Buchanan; Sister-in-law: Colleen Buchanan and Niece: Linda Buchanan and husband, Charles, of Elk Park. Born March 17, 1929 in Johnson City, TN. to the late George and Wilma Adams Barnette, she married the love of her life, Fred Sams, Jr. in 1949 and lived in Elizabethton since that time. Fred preceded her in death in 1983 and she lived independently until the day of her death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Pansy Brown, and a half-brother, Lawrence Honeycutt.

Survivors include a daughter, Dathia Reynolds and son-in-law: Scott. Sisters include: LaVerne Gouge, Elizabethton, Selma Vicars, Johnson City and a brother, Ralph Barnette, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive and a special brother-in-law: Robert Sams.

In addition to being an immaculate homemaker, she had worked as a substitute teacher, daycare worker and hostess at Chick-Fil-A.

Nola was the oldest active member of Borderview Christian Church where she was a member of the Adult Choir for over 60 years, taught Sunday School, VBS, Nursery leader, fellowship team, beautification team, Secret Sisters, and a life-long member of the Kum-Join US Sunday School Class.

No visitation is planned per her wishes and a graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Colbaugh Cemetery with Mr. Scott Fisher, Minister officiating. The eulogy will be given by her son-in-law: Scott Reynolds. Pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of Borderview Christian Church. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family.

Ralph Edward Barnette, 87, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Lakebridge Health Care Center in Johnson City, Tenn. He was born in Johnson City to the late George W. and Wilma Adams Barnette.
Ralph enjoyed a good card game and golfing.
Ralph Barnette served his country honorably and faithfully in the United States Air Force (1951), the United States National Guard (1952-1955), the United States Navy (1955-1957), and the United States Army (1958-1971). He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars and honorably retired from military service.
Ralph was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lee Greene Barnette; two sisters, Nola Sams and Pansy Brown; and three children, Jeffrey Wayne Barnette, Brian Scott Barnette and Gary Todd Barnette.
Survivors include three children, George Edward Barnette (Misty), Michael Lynn Barnette (Amy) and Justin Andrew Sobel; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Laverne Barnette Gouge and Selma Barnette Vicars; and several nieces and nephews.

JONESBOROUGH - Dallas Barnett, 82, Jonesborough, went home to be with the Lord, Friday May 14, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was a native of Roan Mountain and was a son of the late Wiley Paul Barnett and Maude Jarrett Barnett. Dallas retired from Appalachian Bible Company and had worked for Smith-Higgins Company for many years. He was a veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army. Dallas was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Francis and Shirley Barnett; four brothers, Brown, Bob, Ted and Dee Barnett; also a half-brother, Junior Morton.

Fletcher "Gene" Simerly, 85, of Greeneville, Tenn., passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville. A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he was the son of the late Ernie and Dolly Casey Simerly. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with his degree in Electrical Engineering. "Gene" retired as an electrical engineer at Phillips Electronics. He worked for the U.S. Government on the ICBM Submarine Missile Program and was the primary developer of the Nintendo game. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. "Gene" enjoyed watching Tennessee Vols football and loved the outdoors, hiking and going to the beach.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Simerly, and two sisters, Ada McKinney and Edith Peters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy Simerly, of the home, and a nephew, Earl McKinney, Elizabethton. Several cousins also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Fletcher "Gene" Simerly will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be special friends, Patsy and Junior. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Claude Trivette, 70, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Monday, July 10, 2017, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late James Edward and Norma Simerly Trivette. He was a 1965 graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Mr. Trivette worked in the twisting department of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church and was an avid reader.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Culbie & Novella Simerly Trivett. Ronnie was a 1962 graduate of Hampton High School. He served in the United States Army and the Tennessee National Guard. He formerly was employed at North American Rayon Corporation, a bus driver and was a Carter County Commissioner for over 20 years. Ronnie was a member of Slagles United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Watauga Masonic Lodge # 622. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Ruthie Trivett and a nephew: Timmy Oliver. He was an avid fisherman & hunter.

Pauline was a retired employee of Inland Container after 40 years of service. She was a member of Hunter United Methodist Church. She loved to cook, go camping and take care of people.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Bob Nidiffer, and her second husband, Jack McKinney; a sister, Lucille Guinn Collins; and four brothers, Ed Guinn, L.D. Guinn, Mack Guinn and Thomas Puckett.

Edward was born in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Claude and Rachel Puckett Guinn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Ownby, and his brothers, Tom (Audrey) Puckett, L.D. (Ruby) Guinn and Mack Guinn.
Edward had worked in construction for various employers including the TPI Corporation for 10 years. He was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Lewis "LD" Guinn, age 76, 313 East H Street, Elizabethton, TN passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Claude and Rachel Puckett Guinn. "LD" retired as a bread man from Flowers Bakery. After his retirement he worked as a funeral assistant with Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home for ten years. "LD" was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church, Elizabethton where he served as deacon. He was a great handyman and was known as Mr. Fix-it. "LD" loved his family and was an avid NASCAR fan. He especially enjoyed attending the Rod Runs in Pigeon Forge every year with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Mack Guinn and by a half-brother, Tom Puckett. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Ruby Birchfield Guinn, of the home; a son, Randy Guinn and his fiancé Kristin Powell, of Elizabethton; a daughter, Julie Canter and her husband Westley, Jonesborough, TN; grandchildren, Stacey Guinn, Austin Guinn, Logan Guinn, Westley Canter Jr. and Mercedes Canter; several great-grandchildren and brothers and sisters, Lucille Owenby, Pauline McKinney, Erma Lee Stevens, Rose Lewis and her husband Gordon, Louise Whitehead and her husband Carmen and Ed Guinn and his wife Dean, all of Elizabethton. Charles Edward Ledford, 75, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, February 2, 2013, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Frank and Bertha Guinn Ledford.
Mr. Ledford was a 1957 graduate of Happy Valley High School and attended Elizabethton Business College. He served in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Ledford was a retired superintendent with Kennametal, Johnson City. He attended West Side Christian Church and was a former Director of the Boys Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J.D. Ledford.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Scutt Ledford; two daughters, Karen Ledford and Donna Ledford, both of Elizabethton; two sons, Gary Ledford and wife Kate, Hickory, N.C., and Michael Ledford, Spartanburg, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Phyllis Malone, Johnson City, JoAnn Adams and Mary Alice Culler, both of Elizabethton; and a brother, Roger Ledford and wife Claudia, Elizabethton. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Frank & Bertha Guinn Ledford. Mrs. Culler was employed for 20 years with the Carter County School System as a cook at Valley Forge Elementary School. She attended Upper Gap Creek Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: J.D. & Charles Ledford. Sewing was her hobby.

Survivors include two sons: Rick Culler & wife Robin, Elizabethton and Keith Culler, Milligan College. Harlan Guinn, 73, Hampton, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Earnest and Mary Birchfield Guinn. Harlan was an employee of North American Rayon Corporation for 22 years and retired from the Carter County Landfill. He loved to paint cars and do mechanic work. His hobby was antique cars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Darrell, Junior and Tommy Guinn. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Janie Simerly Guinn; three children, Harlan “Toby” Guinn Jr. and wife Amber, Randy Lee Guinn and wife Heidi, and Shannon Guinn; two grandchildren, Zack Guinn and wife Bethany and Hannah Guinn; one brother, Eddie Guinn and wife Sandy; and his special four-legged friends, Chloe and Gritts. The family would like to express a special thank you to Jerry Ingram, Dean Stevens, Louis Honeycutt, Chris Clark, Bill Sheets and Charlotte Honeycutt for all the many things they have done for Harlan during his illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Earnest and Mary Birchfield Guinn.
Darrell served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He retired from Climate Controllers Heating and Air. Prior to that he worked at North American Rayon Corporation for 23 years.
Darrell attended First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Earnest Guinn Jr. and Tommy Guinn.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Judy Simerly Guinn; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy Guinn (Jon) Whitson; special granddaughters, Reiley Grace Whitson and Emilee Reese Whitson; special nephews and nieces, Jill and Sydney Markland, Toby Guinn and Randy Guinn; his special neighbors, Kenneth Arney, Dennis Stout and Richard Crowe; and a special cousin, Bernice Lewis.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charlie & Sarah Guinn Whitehead. He was a 1960 graduate of Cloudland High School. Leon was retired from the Carter County School System in the Maintenance Department. He attended the Strength & Everlasting Love Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years Louise Eggers Whitehead who died June 24, 2015 and by a sister: Loretta McKinney. Leon loved his mule.

Loretta Whitehead McKinney, 66, of Roan Mountain, passed away at the Johnson City Medical Center after a sudden illness on Monday, March 3, 2014.
McKinney was a Carter County native and the daughter of the late Charlie and Sarah Guinn Whitehead. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. She loved the Lord and had many special friends who previously served with her at Little Mountain Baptist Church of Roan Mountain and at Witt Baptist Church in Morristown.
Nothing was more important to Mrs. McKinney than her family. She exemplified what it means to be a "Proverbs 31 woman." After marrying her husband Jim and moving to Morristown, her primary job was to be a full-time Mom to her two sons. For many years, she kept busy shuttling the boys to ballgames, bike races, 4-H fairs, clogging shows, karate lessons, and anything else that interested her sons at the time, while always doing her best to make sure that Jim came home to a clean house at night with supper on the table.
When she wasn't busy with the boys, she worked at a variety of jobs in manufacturing, marketing, and sales. She and Jim moved back to Roan Mountain upon their retirement. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed making treats for them.
Survivors include her husband, Jimmy McKinney, Roan Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Raquel McKinney, Piney Flats; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and April McKinney, Knoxville; five young grandchildren, Hunter, Lilly Kate, Rachael, Maggie, and Isla; a brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Louise Whitehead, Roan Mountain; a sister, Della Whitehead, Roan Mountain; a nephew, Chris Whitehead and wife Shannon Whitehead, Roan Mountain; and a niece, Laura Gorney and husband Charlie Gorney, Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain with the Rev. Garry Edwards and Rev. Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Calhoun-McKinney Cemetery. Music will be provided by Rev. Chris Hughes and Mrs JoNell Young, Organist. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the church at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday will be: Mike Blevins, Todd Markland, Johnny Markland, Larry Shell, Glen "Sonny" Burleson and Lynn Ellis.

Bertha Ellen Cole, age 74, of Lenoir, NC passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018 at her home in Lenoir, NC.

She was born on April 17, 1944, in Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of David and Etta Hicks Johnson.

Bertha was a devoted mother and grandmother who never met a stranger. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking, but mostly spending time with her grand-babies

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her son: Lonnie Johnson; daughter: Linda Ann Cole; Brothers: Jake Johnson, John Johnson and Jim Johnson; Sisters: Helen Oakes, Sylvia Clawson, Cleo Marlowe and Kay Cole.

Christine B. Fields, 86, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center following an extended illness. Christine was born in Avery County, N.C., to the late Steve and Mabel Palmer Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dock Edward Fields, in 1994, and a daughter, Carmelita Fields Johnson.
Christine was a homemaker, a loving Mother and Grandmother. She was a member of Roan Mountain Church of Christ and enjoyed making crafts and visiting auctions and flea markets.
Those left to cherish her memory include five sons, Freddie Fields and wife Joy, Ed Fields and wife Karen, Rick Fields and wife Melissa, Robert Fields and wife Shelly and Cecil Fields and wife Monica, all of Roan Mountain, and one son-in-law, Jack Johnson, also of Roan Mountain. ELIZABETHTON - Joann "Pnut" Perkins, 83, 276 Sunrise Drive, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord Monday, September 2, at The Hospice House in Bristol, TN.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Andy J. Nidiffer and Josephine Nave Nidiffer. Joann was a graduate of Unaka High School and attended Steed College in Johnson City. Joann began working in the local banking industry at a young age, holding various positions at Carter County Bank, Citizens Bank, then serving as Executive Vice President at Watauga Valley Bank. After banking she worked in various roles in different industries then retired from Carter County Highway Department, where she assisted in the office when her husband Jack served as Superintendent.

Joann was a faithful and active member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church where she participated as a member of the choir, food committee, and visited those who were sick or unable to attend. She was a Sunday School teacher, Children's Choir Director, and member of the Adult Choir at the church where she grew up. She was also an active member of the Carter County Republican Party where she served as Secretary for multiple years. She was voted Republican of The Year in 2018.

Joann dearly loved her church family. During her illness, attending church is what she missed the most. She was always witty, hopeful, and positive even in her darkest hours. "Tomorrow will be better" she would always consistently say. Tomorrow has come. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her parents Joann was preceded in death by her husband Jack Perkins, brother Wheeler (Jay) Nidiffer, sister Kathryn Collins, Brother Isaac (Link) Nidiffer, and brother-in-law Earl Collins. Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters-in-law Katie Nidiffer and Carolyn Nidiffer both of Elizabethton; niece Katrina Nidiffer of Nashville; nephew Toby (Carol) Nidiffer, great nephew Andrew (Alyssa) Nidiffer, and great niece Kerri Nidiffer all of Marietta, GA; special cousin Jan Showalter, Johnson City. Many cousins, extended family, and special friends also survive.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 4, from 5 to 7 pm at Memorial Funeral Chapel, followed by a celebration of life service with Rev. Mark Fowler and Rev. Bobby Stout officiating and music provided by Greg Ruston, Katrina Nidiffer, and Tawana Holland. Graveside service will be on Thursday, September 5, at 11am at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

David H. Blackwell, age 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

David was born in Carter County to the late Coburn Jack Blackwell and Pauline Blackwell. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Billie Troutman.

David was the owner and operator of Elizabethton Glass Company and was a member of High Point Baptist Church. He was an antique car enthusiast and loved being at work. David loved helping others and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Cole.

Those left to cherish David's memory include his wife, Wilma Street Blackwell, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Tabitha Blackwell, of Elizabethton; one grandson, Cole "Horse" Blackwell, of Elizabethton; two brothers, Jack Blackwell and wife Patsy and Bobby Blackwell and wife Brenda, all of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

ELIZABETHTON - Dicky James Blackwell, 80, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at his residence after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Claude Burns & Lucy Julian Blackwell. Dicky served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was retired as a welder and pipe fitter. In later years he was associated with his wife, Robin, in the operation of the Corner Nest. Dicky was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 for 48 years, the Elizabethton Chapter Order of Eastern Star, The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)and The Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He was a member of the Jericho Oriental Band for 48 years and he was a past President of the SASOBA Oriental Band. He was an avid UT Football fan, loved to cook and work in his garden. He was a member of Roan Street Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Ronnie Blackwell.
Survivors include his wife: Robin Bulla Blackwell. Two Daughters: Regina (Brad) Shepherd and D’Jae Blackwell. A Step-daughter: Lana (Seth) Snyder. A Grandson: Luke Shepherd. Step-Grandchildren: Carson Atkinson, Cooper Snyder and Collin Snyder. Two Sisters; Jeanie Johnson and Barbara McKinney. One Brother: Gary Blackwell.

ELIZABETHTON - Roger Dale Pierce, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center, after a short illness with his family by his side. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Ellis & Goldie Blackwell Pierce. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. Roger served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. Roger worked as a welder and millwright and retired from Daniels Construction at Eastman. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a generous, gifted and loving brother and friend. He was a wonderful husband always aspiring to care for Debbie. Roger was a member of First Christian Church and was a devoted student of the word of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws: Mary and Eugene Bowers.

Survivors include his wife: Debbie Bowers Pierce, His Brothers: Terry (Barbara) Pierce and Bruce (Mary) Pierce. The family would like to thank those at Franklin-Woods and the Johnson City Medical Center for the care Roger received.

ELIZABETHTON - Steve Dugger, age 60, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord from Duke University on Monday, November 26, 2018, following a courageous battle.


Steve was born in Elizabethton to Walter Clyde Dugger and Norma Ruth Irick Dugger, of Elizabethton.

Steve was a loving husband and father and was a very active member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. He retired from the Carter County Highway Department, where he had worked on the paving crew. Steve enjoyed participating in Revolutionary War Re-Enactments with the re-enactment group, Company of Over Mountain Men.

Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his parents, include his wife, Ginger Sparger Dugger, of the home; his son, Nathan Dugger, of Elizabethton; his daughter, Bethany Wachterman and husband Jason, of Waynesville, NC; one brother, Glenn Dugger and wife Greta, of Port Orange, FL; one sister, Sherry Ayers and husband Steve, of Johnson City; his niece, Emily Dugger; and four nephews, Ian Dugger, Austin Ayers, Eli Ayers and Kevin Sparger.

A service to celebrate the life of Steve Dugger will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 30, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Brent Nidiffer, officiating. Nora Hoilman Johnson, age 79, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 10, 2017 while at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. Born in Avery County, North Carolina on January 30, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Coyd and Mary Elizabeth Hoilman.

Miss Nora, known as a gentle and tender hearted woman, was a great cook who never met a stranger. She enjoyed working with her flowers when she was able.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Finley Johnson; one daughter, Jamie Burleson; four step children, Rejeanna Trice, Finley Johnson, Jr., Remona Johnson and Kristie Johnson; one sister, Sharon Ward; three brothers, Ted Hoilman, Fred Hoilman and Herman Hoilman; two grandchildren, Paige Duncan Presnell (Gabe) and Brianna Duncan (Skyler); and two great grandchildren, Lexi Ford and Callie Presnell. Mrs. Johnson is also survived by a number of step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Johnson Chapel Church in Newland, where she was a member, with Revs. Jim Shoupe and Bill Shoupe officiating. Interment will follow at Ashley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.

Carla passed away at age 61, after a courageous battle with Young Onset Alzheimer's Disease. Carla was born in Canton to the late Carl and Virginia (Greene) Datko. She graduated from Lincoln High School, Class of '68 and retired from Stark State College of Technology in late 2008, where she'd served 20 years as a Custodian. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Jay Lash Jr.; daughter, Rev. Heather (Steven) Lash-McKay; son, Jason (Barbara) Lash; three grandsons, Kyle, Jacob, and Logan; sisters, Barbara (Terry) Nemeth and Susan (Lenny) Whaley.

ELIZABETHTON - James “Jim” Buchanan, Sr., age 77, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from the Sycamore Sholas Hospital.

Jim was born in Elizabethton to the late Delbert Wesley and Ora Myrtle Dyson Buchanan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ford Buchanan; a son, Tim Buchanan; his sisters, Lola Barrett, Lillian “Dot” Bullock, Lois Braswell and Myrkie Johnson; and one brother, Larry “Junebug” Buchanan.

Jim was the founder and owner of Jim’s Glass and Upholstery, which later changed the name to J&J Uphostery. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was an avid NASCAR fan – his favorite driver being Richard Petty. Jim, along with his wife, Elayne, actually received an award from Richard Petty for “Outstanding Fan Club Members” which was a tremendous honor for Jim.

Lonnie Dale Johnson, age 45, of Lenoir died July 8, 2013 at his residence. He was born December 30, 1967. He was a mechanic and enjoyed 4 wheeling.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson of the home; daughters, Amanda Kaylor of Lenoir, Ashley Clawson and husband Jason of Elk Park, Amber Johnson of Lenoir, Aimee Johnson of Lenoir; step-daughters, Jennifer Wyatt of Lenoir, Crystal Fenner and husband Charles of Lenoir; sisters, Irma Higgins, Donna Fillers, Linda Cole, Jessica Bouillion all of Lenoir; nine grandchildren.
