Robert Stanley Tester, age 72 of Mountain City, Route 1, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. He was a native of Johnson County, the son of the late Andrew and Sarah Forrester Tester. He was a retired farmer and member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert B. Tester, Kingsport and Roy Tester, Johnson City; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Collins and Mrs. Mary Dean, both of Pennington Gap, Va., and Mrs. Ruby Miller of Kingsport; one sister, Mrs. Virgie Tester Neva; and 14 grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday from the Lewis Gentry Funeral Home chapel at 2 p.m. with Fred Kelly officiating.
Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers were neighbors and friends; flower bearers were also friends and neighbors.

Bernice Forrester Garland, 95, Butler passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, in the Mountain City Care Center following an extended illness.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar & Ella Tester Forrester. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Garland was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Garland, September 24, 1997; and one sister and seven brothers.

Her hobby was quilting.

Survivors include a step-daughter: Doris Brown and her husband, Clayton, Butler; A step-grandson: Everett Brown, Butler; A sister: Emma Ruth Phillippi, Felton, Delaware; Several nieces & nephews, including a special niece & friend, Geraldine Cable and her husband, Richard; Her special friends, Grace Glover and Bonnie Stout.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2012, in the Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler, with the Rev. Kreg Smith officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012, in the Rock Springs Cemetery. Music will be provided by the church choir. Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday and also at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, will be: Tony Milam, Tom Kyte, Glen Good, Larry Slemp, Paul Lowe and R.E. Brown. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jim Rainbolt, Dr. James Shine, Ed Fletcher, Burnice Gentry, Bill Stout, Howard Stout, Park Arnold and her church family.

Christine Virginia Hamby Hicks, 74, of Gray, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at her residence.

Born in Gray, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Callie Dowell Hamby.

She was a loving wife and mother who dedicated her life to her husband and children. She was a very caring person to everyone who met her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Devon Hicks; sisters: Bonnie Cash, Inez Caudle; brothers: Wiley Hamby, Simon Hamby, David Hamby, Charles Hamby and Wade Hamby.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roy William Hicks, of Gray; four daughters: Pam Feathers, of Johnson City, Cynthia Ann Torbett, of Gray, Peggy Laws, of Johnson City, and Nancy Marie Cox, of Gray; two sons: James William Hicks, of Gray, and Roy Allen Hicks, of Johnson City; sister: Thelma Ruland, of PA; brother: Luke Hamby, of Johnson City; grandchildren: Chris Campbell, Shannon Buchannon, Scott Hicks, Sheri Hicks, Clinton Torbett, Wesley Laws, Hannah Cox, James Hicks, Cody Hicks and Noah; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday at 8:00 PM in the Sunrise chapel with Rev. Adam Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM prior to the service. We are saddened to announce the passing of Virginia “Nin” Brown, age 99 of Crackers Neck. Nin passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022 in Mountain City Care Center. She was born June 8, 1922 to the late Will Smith and Pearl Tester Smith. She was a member of Pleasant View Christian Church. She loved gardening, bird watching, baby sitting and reading her Bible. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Melvin Ray Brown, a daughter: Virginia Ann and two sons: Timothy and Paul and several brothers and sisters.

JONESBOROUGH - Dorothy Virginia Tester Wilson, 93, Jonesborough passed away Sunday, October 10, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 24, 1928 in Mountain City to the late Smith & Ollie Fritts Tester. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton before moving to Jonesborough in 2009 . She was retired from First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City as a Custodian. In earlier years she was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church, after moving to Jonesborough she become a member of West Hills Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister: Lucy Oliver and a brother: Paul Tester.
Survivors include her sister: Mary W. White. One Niece: Vickie Cloyd, One Nephew: Elijah Cloyd. Two Great Nieces Annie Cloyd and Breanna Cloyd. A special friend: Janet Karneck.

Lewis McElyea Jr., age 71, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born on January 14, 1947 to the late William 'Bill Berry McElyea and Rosa Virginia Swift McElyea. In addition to his parents Lewis was preceded in death by his sisters: Mary Ann McElyea and Bonnie Louise McElyea; brother, John McElyea; special sister-in-law, Ann Guy and her husband Burl.

He was a member of Ackerson Creek Christian Church.

Lewis worked in factories most of his life. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved fishing.

She was born June 10, 1939 in Erwin, Tennessee to the late Hubert and Margaret Howell Forrester. She had lived her entire life in Butler. Geraldine was a graduate of Johnson County High School. She had been employed by the Johnson County School System for 28 years as a cook at Doe Elementary School. She was an active member of Little Doe Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir for several years. She was also a member of Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star and Beta Theta Club. She was a granddaughter of Oscar & Ella Forrester whom she lived with for a number of years.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years: Richard Cable. One Son: Teddy Ray (Debbie) Cable, Daytona Beach, Florida. She was Valedictorian of the first nursing class thru Johnson County Memorial Hospital, her places of employment included Staff Nurse at Johnson County Memorial Hospital, Office Nurse with DR Fred Wampler, Dr Gary Hullquist, Charge Nurse Mountain City Nursing Home. Gordon House Elete home for adults, Staff Nurse Orange County Nursing Home, and Charge Nurse for Louisea Nursing home. She was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed Bird watching, and Flower Gardening.

Liz was born Sarah Elizabeth Tester to Claude Tester and Hazel Cannon Tester November 29th, 1937, in a cabin in Butler, Tennessee. She departed this life as a resident in Avenir Memory Care on October 19th, 2019.

Liz and her parents and sister lived in Butler until 1944 when they moved to Johnson City, TN, where Liz graduated from Science Hill High School in 1956 and went to Berea College, KY, on a nursing scholarship receiving her BSN in nursing in June 1960.

Liz served as a nurse in many venues during her 42 years of service, including an instructor in two nursing schools, teaching Okinawan nurses for two years, being a public health nurse, a psychiatric nurse, and a certified substance abuse counselor. She had a mission circle named after her by her home Baptist Church and was ordained Elder by Hopwood Christian Church in Johnson City.

Liz is survived by her husband of 59 years, Vance Penley Davis; her three sons, Jeffrey Neil Davis, born in Berea, KY, Gregory Litton Davis, born on Okinawa, and Thadd Alan Davis, born in Charleston, SC. ; her sister, Frankie Anne Tester of Naples, FL; her daughters-in-law, Billie Davis, and Kelley Edge Davis; Grandchildren, Sarah Caitlin Rueff, William Penley Davis, Darius Fragopoulos Davis, 'Hristina Belle Davis, and Evelyn Isabel Davis, and great-granddaughter Aya Laclaira Vanlandingham.

Liz loved gardening and raised many flowers and bushes around her houses. She loved animals and raised and cared for many dogs and cats. She loved to travel and hike and take pictures. She was a singer, being part of quartets, choirs and soloists, especially in church.

It was Liz's wish to be cremated. A memorial service to honor her memory will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 9, 2019, in the Hopwood Christian Church, 109 Hopwood Lane, Milligan College, TN 37682.

Kathleen Potter Hatley Hodges, 87, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, at her residence.

She was born to the late David Carter Potter and Hattie McElyea Potter in the old town of Butler, TN. At the age of 12, their family home was taken when the Watauga Lake was built. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hodges.

She was known as a sweet, generous, kind, loving woman who loved her family. She worked very hard in her life, raising eight children during hard times. She, however, considered herself a blessed person. She loved to bake, decorate and clean her home. Kathleen also had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing gospel songs and going to church. Most of all, she loved her Lord.

Kathleen worked at the Glove Plant in Mountain City, the IRC/TRW in Boone, NC, and the Chetola Resort, Blowing Rock, NC.

Kathleen was preceded in death by seven sisters; Ethel, Eula, Mildred, Doris, Ruth, Betty and Dorothy; three brothers, Bud, Marion, and James. She was first married to Clifford Dan Hatley "Buckeye Hatley." They had eight children: Betty, Gary, Michael (Wuzzy), Susie, Janice, Kathy Jo, Randy and Denny. She later married Roy Hodges and had one stepson Kelly Hodges from Foscoe, NC. She had 11 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and great great great grandchildren.

A Service to Celebrate the life of Kathleen will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, TN with Rev. Ray Greene and Pastor Eric Cornett officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service.

A graveside service and interment will follow at the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

JOHNSON CITY - Judy Hamby Carr, 75, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Four Oaks Health Care. She was a native of Johnson City and daughter of the late Wiley and Mayme Ruth Head Hamby. In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by her husband, James Leonard Carr.

Those left to cherish Judy's memory include her son, Scott Lee Beaver and his wife Melody, grandson, Nicholas Montgomery, her brother, Ronnie, and sister, Linda, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Hildred Ellis Hardin of Cleveland, Tenn., formerly of 111 Broad Street, Elizabethton, Tenn., went to be with her Lord, on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. She was 102 years old. Hildred was born on February 13, 1914 in Carter County, Tenn.
Hildred was employed until her retirement with North American Rayon Corporation, Elizabethton. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabethton, Tenn. She loved the Arts, antiques, dolls, growing a beautiful flower garden and watching the birds from her kitchen door. She was a wonderful mother and her greatest love was her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Austin Ellis and Hattie Carroll Ellis; two brothers, infant Glen Ellis and Thomas Edward Ellis; two sisters, Margaret Ragen and Helen Kelly; and her son-in-law, Rev. Justin Nave.
She is survived by her two children, Richard A. Hardin (Donna) and Barbara Hardin Nave; five grandchildren, Danielle Nave Gentry (Bill), Elisa Nave Peoples (Alvin), Tina Nave Robinson (Rev. Keith), Rev. Brian Nave (Carol), and Wes Nave; four nieces; three nephews; and her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A native of Carter County, Mrs. Birchfield was a daughter of the late Dave Powell and Minnie Bullock Ellis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Howard Birchfield, Nov. 9, 1986, by a daughter, Sandra Kay Birchfield, and by a sister, Florence Ellis.
Mrs. Birchfield was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corp. and most recently had been employed as a hostess at Pizza Inn of Elizabethton. She was a member of the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Bill Kuhn and Peggy and Dr. Jack Holly, all of Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Powell and Gloria Ellis, Randall and Jennifer Birchfield and Kim and Tammy Birchfield, all of Elizabethton; four sisters, Juanita White, Atchison, Kan. ELIZABETHTON - Earnest "Ernie" Fortner, 80, Siam Community of Elizabethton passed away Monday, June 3, 2019 in the Four Oaks Health Care Center of Jonesborough.

He was a son of the late Rhudy and Mamie Estep Fortner. Mr. Fortner was a farmer and a member of the Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, western movies and all of his friends from John Reed Nursing Home and Four Oaks Health Care Center. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Glenda Hall and Irene Shirley; five brothers, David Fortner, Larry Fortner, Jimmy Fortner, Lloyd Fortner and James W. Fortner.

Survivors include a sister, Fannie Mae Fortner Henshaw Gosnell of Jonesborough; a brother, Bruce Fortner of Lincoln, Nebraska; two special sisters-in-law, Trula B. Fortner, Elizabethton and Alazine Fortner, Scherltz, Texas; also several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 5, 2019 in the Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Wilbur Dam Road, Elizabethton with Rev. Gene Deaton officiating. JOHNSON CITY - Glenda Rhea Fortner DeVault Hall, 70, of Johnson City, went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Glenda was a native of the Siam Community in Elizabethton. She was a daughter of the late Rhudy A. and Mamie Estep Fortner. She was a lifelong member of Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. Glenda was loved by all who met her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to so many, proving you don't have to be blood to be family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Hall; son, James Paul DeVault; sister, Irene Shurling; and brothers, David, Larry, Worley, Lloyd, and Jimmy Fortner. Survivors include: five children, Linda Gail Carrera, Teresa Rhea Davis (Steven), Justin Eugene DeVault, Kathy Lee (Don), Joy Thacker, and JD Loveland; 11 grandchildren, Amanda Marie Carrera, Matthew Eugene Carrera, Dakoda Carrera, Michael Bales (Katie), Kristen N. Dennis Columbus Fortner, 77, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Ada Smith Fortner.
Mr. Fortner was retired as a dye setter with American Air Filter. He was a member of the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies were gardening, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Dayton Blevins, Elizabethton; a grandson, Steven Oliver, Elizabethton; two brothers, Jack and Billy Fortner; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Dennis Columbus Fortner will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, in the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Loveless officiating. Interment will follow the service. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Jackie Willard Fortner, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Ada Bell Smith Fortner. He was a graduate of Unaka High School where he was a member of the baseball team. Jackie served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was employed at Great Lakes until it closed and retired from Bosch Inc., Johnson City. Jackie was an avid golfer and athlete. He played organized sports most of his life. He made a hole-in-one August 10, 2012 and won a state championship with his teammates in his 50+ basketball league. He loved nature and loafin’ in the mountains. Jackie was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church but attended First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Todd Fortner; three brothers, Dennis, Wayne and William Fortner; and two sisters, June Hicks and Jean Webb. Survivors include his son, Keith Fortner, and grandson, Dwayne Fortner. He had a very special friend and companion, Peggy Campbell, whom he loved dearly. He had several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Travis Fortner. He loved his two special little friends, Kennedy and Peyton. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Todd Hallman officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his golfing buddies.

John Norman Tester, of 236 Willow Circle, Mountain City, TN, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer at the Johnson City Medical Center on February 20, 2015.
He was born in Neva, Tennessee, on July 20, 1940 to Henry Clay and Nellie Raydell Tester. He lived several years in Kingsport, Tennessee, and later lived in Mountain City, where he graduated from Johnson County High School in 1958.
Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army and retired in 1979 as an SFC. His commendations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Army Commendation, Good Conduct, National Defense, RVN Gallantry Cross and Meritorious Service among others.
He was a member of the Taylorsville Lodge 243 F&AM Freemasons. After retirement from the U.S. Army, he worked several years for the Johnson County Sheriff's Department and at the Northeast Correctional Center, where he retired as a Sergeant.
An avid sports enthusiast, he coached Little League football and also was an assistant coach at Johnson County Middle School for several winning seasons.
But most importantly he was a Christian and family man. He served as an elder at the Mountain City Presbyterian Church for many years and was much loved by his church family.
He had many interesting hobbies, the last of which was "Norm's Coca-Cola Room," where he enjoyed many sunny and happy visits with family and friends.
Norm always cherished living at home in the mountains of Johnson County and his home was his haven and heaven on earth.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mary Lou Meade and Josephine Meade.
Survivors include his wife of forty-seven years, Sherry Tester; son, Tim Tester and wife, Barbara, of Bristol, VA; daughter, Bridget Wagner and husband, Shannon, of Fernandina Beach, FL; one grandson, USAF Staff Sgt. Michael Westberry; six granddaughters, Brittney Westberry, Brooke Westberry, Madison Tester, Natalie, Carly and Isabella Wagner; two great-grandchildren, Kyleigh and Ariona. Also surviving are three nephews, one niece, and several cousins, as well as a very special mother-in-law, Stella Blankenbeckler.
Services will be conducted at the Mountain City Presbyterian Church on Tuesday February 24, 2015, at 7:00 PM. Officiating ministers will be Rev. Warren Stewart, Dr. Thomas R. Peake, and Rev. James Swoager. Masonic funeral rites will be provided by the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge. Music will be provided by Lois Dunn and Brandy Bowers.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church.
Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday February 25, 2015, at 1:00 PM at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.
