She was a daughter of the late Lula Pritchard and James Wesley Moody.

She was a Greeneville, TN, native who had lived in Johnson City for years prior to relocating to Florida.

Mrs. Harshbarger was a former member of Central Baptist Church, Johnson City.

Mrs. Harshbarger was a former proprieter of the South Roan Grill.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harshbarger was preceded in death by: her husband, Ernest Harshbarger; sister, Clara Mottern; and brother, Stewart Moody.

Survivors include: three nieces, Kathy Davitt and her husband, Jack, of Jacksonville, FL, Karen Nilsson and her husband, Harry, of St. Augustine, FL, and Rheba Lowry, of Euclid, OH; five great nieces and nephews, Michael, Steven, Julie, Joseph and Hunter; and numerous cousins.

Services for Birta Lucille Harsbarger will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 1, 2011, from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Rev. R. Willard Warfield will officiate. George Ellis Moody, 84, of Newland, N.C., died Sunday, January 9, 2000, at a Linville hospital.

Mr. Moody was a native and lifelong resident of Avery County, North Carolina and a son of the late Elijah Puckett and Rosa Ellen Moody Puckett. He was also preceded in death by a son, George Ellis Moody Jr.; and two wives, Della Cable Moody and Lilly Smith Moody.

Mr. Moody was a farmer and attended the Johnson Chapel.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Fred Shoun of Elizabethton, Connie and Fred Hoilman of Newland, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Rose Moody of Newland, N.C.; two sisters, Geneva Shell of Heaton, N.C., Maxine Puckett of Elizabethton; six grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.

Born in Kentucky on April 28, 1941, he was the son of the late Kenneth James Brewer, Sr. and Etta Clarice Moody Brewer. He was retired from ABF and attended Hope Community Church. Mr. Brewer was a member of the Cherryville Masonic Lodge #505.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Ed Brewer, Richard Brewer, Robert Brewer, Roy Brewer and Jim Brewer and five sisters, Lula Mae Brewer, Iva Lee Raines, Juanita Cuthbertson, Barbara Styles and Pat Waycaster.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Oaks Brewer; son, Kenny Brewer and wife, Linda of Graham; daughter, Patricia Pruett of Shelby; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Zelma Sophina Brewer Puett, age 79, of 282 Mitchiner Rd., died September 27, 2011. She was a native of Carter Co., TN and was the daughter of the late Finley Jerome and Emma Moody Brewer. Zelma worked for many years in the hosiery industry as a knitter and fixer with Durham Hosiery, Burlington Industry and Glenn Raven Mills. Zelma was a long time member of Perry's Chapel Baptist Church where she sang, and played her guitar in the church band. She lived an enriched and full life as a musician and homemaker. Zelma's greatest passion in life was her family, blue grass & gospel music. She loved to pick-up her 1932 Gibson guitar, shower down on an old-timey tune by memory and make music with her family and friends. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday October 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Perry's Chapel Baptist Church by Rev. Clyde Waiden. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Geraldine never met a stranger and was known for her outgoing personality.

Mrs. Pearce had worked as a cook at Hampton Elementary School. She was a very talented pianist and had a passion for music. Jo Ann enjoyed roller skating and ice skating. She was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church and Hampton Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pearce was preceded in death by her husband, Harry R. Pearce and six brothers, Harry, Clarence, Carl, William, Robert, and Charlie Carden. She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Ellis Howe and husband, Daniel, Kingsport; two sons, James Daniel Ellis, of the home, and Joseph Leslie Pearce and his fiancé, Sherri Lewis, Hampton; three grandchildren, Virginia Naomi Marshall and husband, Dr. Phillip Marshall, Richard Matthew Howe, and Madeline Michelle Howe, all of Kingsport; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her first husband, Lewis Ellis, Johnson City; and special nieces, Bobbie Carolyn, Barbara Sue, Ruth Evelyn, Nancy Lynn, and Priscilla. JOHNSON CITY - Vearl E. “Gil” Moody, age 81, of Johnson City, entered into heaven on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at the Ballad Health Hospice House, Bristol, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Moody was born and raised in Johnson City. He was a graduate of Southeastern Christian College in Winchester, KY, and was a veteran, serving in the US army.

Following a successful managing career with JC Penney, Mr. Moody returned to Johnson City in 1976 to fulfill a personal goal of opening Moody Books.

Mr. Moody was an ordained minister. For over 50 years, he was minister of music serving several churches. He was on the staff of Fishery Community Church in Erwin for 17 years at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Warren and Ranah Moody; his wife, Linda D. Moody; two brothers, Bill Caraway and Warren “Gene” Moody, and a sister, Doris Caraway.

Mr. Moody is survived by: two daughters, Vickie Allison and husband Derrick, of Illinois, and Linda Moody Cass of New York; two sons, Vearl E. Moody, Jr. and wife Beverly, of Piney Flats, and Timothy Moody of New York; one brother, Jerry Moody of Ringold, GA; one sister, Sharon M. Wrinn of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Molly and Graham Allison and Nick and Raina Moody; and several nieces and nephews.

Beverly was a 1959 graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was a wonderful Homemaker, Dental Assistant, Caterer and Volunteer to many schools, churches and hospitals. She was an active member at Wellspring Church in Spring Hill, for the past 3 years. Beverly was a member of First Christian Church in Johnson City, for over 40 years, where she was a long-time member of the Win-A-Kuple Sunday School Class. Beverly was very active and had many hobbies. She loved to cook and volunteered and served as a hostess at First Christian Church for many years. As an avid fan of NASCAR, she and her late husband Tom spent many joyous years attending the trophy presentations in Winners Circle at the Bristol Motor Speedway with their great friends Linda Shull and her late husband, Ed. Additionally, Beverly worked as a hostess in the suites at the Bristol Motor Speedway. She also spent many years working at Chick-fil-A as a hostess. She volunteered for Kitchen of Hope in Kingsport, serving meals to the needy and homeless, as well as serving other outreach opportunities. Beverly was always ready to help anyone in need. She was a huge sports fan and loved Major League Baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves. Beverly and Tom spent many family vacations attending baseball games.

In 2018 she relocated to the Nashville area to be closer to her children and grandchildren, which gave them great joy while they created great memories that they will cherish forever. For many years she has frequently enjoyed day trips, traveling and spending time with her great friends Ginger Ison, Carolyn Jeffers and Mike & Rebecca Jackson and family, as well as many other friends.

In addition to her parents, Beverly was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty years, Charles Thomas Britton, in 2014, and her brother-in-law Johnny Mac Britton.

Those left to cherish her memory include son Charles Thomas Britton ll (Chuck), of Franklin, TN, daughter Susan Michele Britton, of Smyrna, TN; 3 grandchildren, Brandon Scott Tester, Madison Ann and Kyle Thomas; three brothers, Paul Travis Moody and wife Patsy, Marvin Moody and wife Jill, Roswell Moody and wife Darlene; two brother-in-laws, Robert '' Bob '' Britton, William Michael Britton and wife Pam. Beverly is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and many special friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Beverly Ann Moody Britton will be held Monday April 5th, 2021, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Dr. Donald Mushayamunda, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends at 5:00 P.M. with the service following at 6:00 P.M.

The graveside committal service for Beverly will be Tuesday, April 6th, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

Norman L. Moody, age 75, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his family.
A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Earnest Norman and Mary Katherine Phipps Moody. He was a member of Keystone Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Moody spent 37 years employed by Woolworth Department Stores traveling to different cities before retiring as General Manager of the Woolworth Department Store in Johnson City.
Mr. Moody was an avid golfer and loved to listen to gospel music.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara T. Moody, of the home; two daughters, Sandy Barber and husband, Vince, Lexington, KY, Debbie Moody, Nicholasville, KY; one son, Lee Moody, Myrtle Beach, SC; five grandchildren, Norman Lee Moody III, Taylor Moody, Chris Barber, Amanda Van Dyke and Emily Van Dyke; one brother, Charles Moody and wife, Mary, Panama City Beach, FL; one sister, Mary Ann Massey, and husband, Keith, Johnson City. Norman is also survived by his pet dog, Brandy. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Moody will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, October 31, 2014, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Gerald Malcolm officiating.

Brenda Kay Geouge, 71, of Roan Mountain, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at The Waters of Roan Highlands after an extended illness.
Born January 10, 1947 in Banner Elk, N.C., to the late Floyd and Sadie Jaber Moody, she had lived her entire life in the Roan Mountain area.
Brenda was a 1965 graduate of Cloudland High School and was retired due to disability as a Respiratory Therapist from Cannon Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain. Her hobbies were arts and crafts, scrapbooks and she was a huge Elvis Presley fan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Geouge, in 2007.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Moody, Bluff City; one grandson, Tyler Moody; one sister, Peggy Jean Stanley, Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Brenda Geouge was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 23, at First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Geren Street officiating. The family received friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. Jim was the son of the late Ruby and Henry Hicks of Elk Park, NC. Preceding him in death are Brothers: Junior, Jack, and Jerry Hicks; Sister: Deloris Isaacs; Brothers in- Laws: Buck Isaacs and Bob Blackburn; Nephew: David Hicks, and Niece: Jenny Blackburn.

Jim dedicated his life to being a devoted and loving husband, Dad, Papaw, Uncle, Brother, and friend. Jim delighted in family time. Jim’s dinner table was always large enough for the entire family as they gathered for Lena’s Sunday lunch.

He was a member of the Cranberry High School Class of 1956 and a bus driver and member of the football team. Jim was proud to be a lifetime member of Elk Park Christian Church, where he served as a board member and deacon. Jim was a founding member of the Liar’s Table at The Country House. He served his community as a town alderman, board member of Carter County Bank and the Cranberrian Corporation. He sponsored Elk Park’s Little League baseball and football teams for many years. Jim loved opportunities to advance his community and help others.

Jim was a lifelong truck driver, businessmen and tree farmer. He drove millions of miles with fellow truckers at Underwood and Weld, Rufus Henley Trucking, Northeastern, and Carolina Western, traveling north to south and east to west. In the 1980s, blue Peterbilts began hauling east to west as H&H Express, Inc.

From 1972 until 1990, Jim and Lena also owned and operated a grocery store in Elk Park, selling groceries, gas, feed, coal, fence post and just about anything that was needed. After selling the store business, they purchased Blue Ridge Orchard, growing trees and nursery stock. Jim enjoyed his later years working on the farm, daily visits to Brinkley Hardware, the Elk Park Post Office, Country House, and hanging out with the boys at H&H.

Jim loved God and lived his life at the foot of the cross as a living example. Jim leaves his family uncountable life lessons, memories, unlimited and unconditional love. His family will always remember his words to them: “pray for each other, and take care of each other,” and “time changes all things.” He would always tell his grandchildren to “keep your eyes on the road and your mind on your business” as he taught them to drive anything with a motor. When you ask Jim how he was doing, he would say “not good, but super good.” He told his children many times “In this life we will have to do a lot of things, but one thing we do not have to do is complain.” His advice to everyone was “always to pray about it first before making a decision.” As he would say to us today, “Carry on!”

Funeral services for Jimmy will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, at the Elk Park Christian Church. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the church. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at Blue Ridge Orchard Cemetery, on Floyd Hayes Lane in Elk Park.

Jack Robert Hicks, 77, of Elk Park, NC passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. A native of Avery County, he was born May 18, 1942, the middle of the late Henry and Ruby Hicks’ seven children.

If you loved Southern Gospel Music, shiny trucks, and stories of years on the road, then you loved being around Jack — a man with an 8th grade education who built a business to be proud of. The trucks that he loved so much all bear John 3:16.

Jack was born to drive. He took a 1940 Ford truck with a flathead engine and 95hp and drove it to Crank’s Creek, Ky. to pick up a load of coal. In 1977 he bought his first truck; 10 years later he started Jack Hicks, Inc., the company that has been his life’s work and passion. Jack was quick to share the credit for his success with his wife and employees.

In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by Brothers: Junior and Jerry Hicks; and Sister: Delores Issacs.

Left to cherish his memory are his Wife of 27 years: Angela Hicks; Daughters: Donna Spencer (Donald) and Melissa Hampton; Grandchildren: Jack McCloud (Sarah), Jacqueline Gilliam (Jesse), Aiden, Dawson, and Gavin Spencer, Luke, Mallory and Jed Childress, Sunni Dearmin, and Hayden Brewer, and Jake and Briana Pritchard; Brother: Jim Hicks (Lena), Sisters: Barbara Blackburn (Bob) and Aleta Cornett (Jim); Great-grandchildren: Brianna and Nathan McCloud and Chase, Logan, and Mason Gilliam; and many nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services for Jack Hicks will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Elk Park Christian Church. Rev. Matt Dibler and Rev. Tommy Carver will officiate. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Hicks Family Cemetery. Robert Burleson, Patrick Childress, Jed Childress, Luke Childress, Chris Bare, Tudor Hicks and Perry Daniels will serve as pallbearers.

Barbara Faye Moody Shoun was born March 12, 1942 in Spruce Pine, NC to Della Cable Moody and George Moody. Barbara spent her early childhood in Heaton, NC until the sudden passing of her mother, Della, in 1955. At the tender age of 13, Barbara moved to Elizabethton and was adopted by her mother’s sister and husband Alma & Ben Cannon. Alma and Ben provided a loving Christian home to Barbara and her adopted brother, Ted Cannon on Hemlock Street.

Barbara graduated from Elizabethton High School, Class of 1959. She attending flight attendant school but quickly realized that jet set life was not for her. Like the words of a country song, in 1960 Barbara met the love of her life, Fred H. “Sonny” Shoun, of Stoney Creek, on a blind date at the Blue Circle, while sitting on the hood of a car, filing her nails with an Emory board. This handsome young Air Force veteran stole her heart and they eloped 6 weeks later.

In 1961 Barbara and Sonny welcomed their daughter, Anne and in 1965 their son, Gene. As a family, the Shoun’s enjoyed life to the fullest with an open door to all their friends, family, neighbors, community kids and animals. Their home was filled with singing, laughing, practical jokes, funny nicknames, playing pinochle and hosting neighborhood get-togethers.

“Avid Fan” doesn’t adequately express Barbara’s love for Tar Heels Basketball and the former Elizabethton Twins. During the 70’s & 80’s Barb and Sonny were Twins season ticket holders and were summer family hosts for many of the players that got their start playing minor league ball in Elizabethton, including many of the future members of the ’87 & ’91 World Series Champs. The Shoun’s frequently traveled with the team to their away games to VA, WVA & KY. Many lifelong friendships were forged supporting the former Twins.

Barb worked at Raytheon of Bristol, and Hammond Organ of Elizabethton. However, in the mid 1980’s she realized her true calling was care giving to seniors. Barb loved her retired ladies and was known as ‘the best cleaning lady’ of Elizabethton in the 80’s & 90’s.

Barb had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1955 where she served as a Sunday School teacher, GA leader and Youth mom. She never met a dog she didn’t LOVE and for many years was the President of the Carter County Humane Society, for more than two decades Barbara was a member of the Johnson City Brunswick Bowling league, and the Elizabethton Red Hat Society.

Barbara looked into the eyes of Jesus on Wednesday, August 25th and was proceeded in death by her mother & father, Della Moody & George Moody, her bonus mom & dad, Alma & Ben Cannon, her brother, Ted Cannon, her half-brother, Ronnie Moody and her husband of 55 years, Sonny Shoun. She is survived by her daughter and son-in –law, Anne & JD Byrd of Buffalo Valley, TN, her son and daughter-in-law, Gene & Katherine Tyler Shoun of Elizabethton, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

The family wishes to extend a very special thanks to Ivy Hall Nursing Home staff which were truly a second family to Barbara. She loved you all very much. Thanks is also extended to Amedisys Hospice. Ronnie Moody, age 60, of Bristol, Va., passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.

He was born on June 18, 1957 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late George Ellis Moody and the late Lillie Smith Moody.

He was a member of the Curtis Creek Freewill Baptist Church and worked for many years as a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Linda Gwyn Moody.

A native of Avery County, she was born April 23, 1950 a daughter of the late William and Alice Gwyn Puckett.

Roger Dale “Boney” Tolley, Sr. 72, of Watauga, Tenn., passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Born Feb. 16, 1948, in Newland, NC, he was a son of the late Charlie Tolley and Maxine Puckett. He was retired from RDR Mobile Homes. Boney was a member of Fellowship Community Church and he helped build the church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife: Mary Ruth Coleman Tolley; by two Brothers: Waites Puckett and Paul Puckett; and a Sister: Wilma Scalf.

Connie Rose Puckett Hoilman, 64, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on January 8, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, NC, she was born December 9, 1954, a daughter of the late L.D. Ingram and the late Josie Geneva Shell, and step-daughter of the late Homer P. Shell, Sr.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed using her computer, researching family genealogy, camping and spending time with her family and beloved dog, Bella.

Along with her parents, Connie was preceded in death by: one Brother: Ralph Lynn Puckett; Grandparents: Elijah and Rose Moody Puckett; and several aunts and uncles.

A native of Avery County, he was born January 17, 1957.

He was a landscaper and enjoyed fishing, his dogs, gardening and spending time with his friends.

JOHNSON CITY - Robin A. Moody Davis, 54, Johnson City, formerly of Unicoi, died unexpectedly Friday, September 7, 2018, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Robin was a native of Johnson City and a resident of Unicoi for most of her life before returning to Johnson City in 2014.

She was a daughter of Barbara Moody Forbes, Johnson City, and the late Jarvis Moody.

Robin was a homemaker, and a former longtime employee of K-Mart #9774.

She was a 1982 graduate of Science Hill High School. Robin was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church. She enjoyed reading her Bible, cooking and decorating her home for the holidays.

In addition to her father, Mrs. Davis is preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Frank and Rosa Bryant; and paternal grandparents, Jarvis and Rose Moody.

In addition to Robin's mother, she is survived by her husband, Jeffrey D. Davis; her son, Ryne Davis, Johnson City; two brothers, Todd Moody, Boones Creek, Scott Moody and wife Robin, Erwin; two nephews, Joshua Moody and Zackary Moody; one niece, Kaitlyn Moody.

It was Robin's wish to be cremated, and her life will be celebrated with a memorial service at 7:00 P.M. Saturday, September 15, 2018, at Boones Creek Bible Church with pastors Jason Royston and Gary Edwards officiating.

JOHNSON CITY - Kaitlyn Victoria Moody, age 26 peacefully went home to heaven after an extended battle with cancer December 4, 2022. She was a native of Washington County, TN. She was of the Baptist Faith and enjoyed watching Borderview Christian Church.

Katie loved her family and enjoyed watching scary movies with them. She was a warrior and never quit fighting until the Lord called her home.
