    Mrs. Martha A. O'Brien Bowers, 75, died at her home, Charity Hill, Wednesday evening at 9 o'clock.
    Surviving are her husband, Reece Bowers; two sons, A. J. Bowers of Roan Mountain, and W. C. Bowers, of Elizabethton; one sister, Mrs. Hattie Hyder of Unicoi; and 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence, the Rev. Clarence Howington and the Rev. Hamp Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

    Andy J. Bowers, 59, construction engineer in the Tennessee highway department for the past twelve years, died last night at eleven o'clock at his home in Roan Mountain, following a twelve-day illness.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Freewill Baptist Church at Charity Hill, Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock with the Rev. Clarence Howington officiating, assisted by the Rev. H. C. Hopkins. Interment will be in the Bowers Cemetery at Charity Hill. The Jr. O.U.A.M., of which Mr. Bowers was a member, will officiate at the grave. The body will remain at the home in Roan Mountain until the funeral services.
    Mr. Bowers, a prominent resident of Carter County, was born and reared at Charity Hill, the son of Green and Martha Bowers. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church at Charity Hill.
    He was married to Miss Eliza Deloach who survives him together with six sons: Arthur Bowers of Big Stone Gap, Va., James, Maynard and Eugene Bowers of Roan Mountain, Clarence Bowers of Shell Creek, Earl Bowers of Hampton; four daughters, Mrs. Minnie Poe of Johnson City, Mrs. Beulah Wright and Mrs. Vorita Stephens of Blevins, Pauline Bowers of Roan Mountain. He is also survived by one brother, W. C. Bowers of Elizabethton, and thirteen grandchildren.
    Active pallbearers will be Nat C. Nave, Leon Young, E. E. Hathaway, Judge Ben Allen, Tom Kerley and Will Knight.
    Honorary pallbearers will include Will Horton, Win Chambers, Clyde Treadway, Bill Williams, Bernie Curry, W. O. Hampton, Luther Tipton, Joe Heaton, Nat Simerly, Dave Simerly, Sam Whitehead, George Grindstaff, Arthur Hardin, Bob Slaughter, Gaines Pritchard and Ed Shell.

    Mrs. Stevens was the widow of Clarence Luther Stevens.

    She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Hyer of Warren, Ohio, Shirley Greene and her husband, Carroll, of Clinton and Wilma Nichols and her husband, Philip, of Knoxville; and three sons, Donald Stevens and his wife, Dean, of Rockwood, Ralph Stevens and his wife, Brenda, of Clinton and Michael Stevens and his wife, Eleanor, of Oak Ridge.

    Mrs. Stevens is also survived by her brother, Maynard Bowers of Hampton, Tenn.; her sister, Pauline Comer of West Newton, Pa.; and by 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

    In addition to her husband, two other sons, C.L. Stevens Jr. and Richard Lee Stevens, died earlier.

    A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Dwight Bass will officiate.

    Edna Pearl Bowers Ayers, a resident of Hillview Health Center, Elizabethton, died Monday, February 2, 2015, at the age of 93. Pearl was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William Chrisley and Lola Carriger Bowers.
    Pearl was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was married to Navy Seaman Willie Ayers from North Carolina for 54 years before his death in 1998. A former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, Pearl and her husband moved to Colorado for a short time where they ran the Loveland Café. Their next move was to Washington, D.C. where they owned and operated Ayers Guest Houses and Laundry Route Services from 1948 to 1995 before retiring and returning to Carter County.
    Pearl was an avid gardener, loved animals and birds, crocheting, mystery novels, collecting postcards and elephants. She was of the Baptist faith.
    In addition to her husband, Pearl was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Jean Ayers; her brothers, Ray and Floyd Bowers; nephews, Larry Dean Bowers and Ray Roberson; and a sister-in-law, Irene Roberson.
    Survivors include her sister, Ina Mae Soto; her nieces, Deborah Meyer, Dianna Tucker and Christina Soto Whitfield and husband Rex; a great-niece, March Goodling; a great-nephew, Jesse Meyer; and great-great-nephew, Jeremy Bell. Other special nieces and nephews are Roseanna Lowe, Gary Roberson and Ann Willis, and special friends, Helen Blevins and Luther Taylor.
    Funeral services for Edna Pearl Bowers Ayers will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, February 6, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. R.L. Poole officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    Floyd J. Bowers, 76, 1436 Charity Hill Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a lengthy illness.

    Mr. Bowers was a Carter County native and a son of the late William and Lola Carriger Bowers.

    He was retired from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

    Mr. Bowers was a previous Sunday school director and member of Siam Baptist Church, Elizabethton.

    He was a member of American Legion Post No. 49.

    Mr. Bowers was a World War II Marine Corps veteran.

    He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Mildred Jenkins Bowers; one son, Larry Dean Bowers; and one brother, Ray Bowers.

    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maxie Bowers; one stepson, Daniel Andrew Johnson, Hampton; two sisters, Pearl Ayers, Elizabethton, and Ina Mae Soto, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services for Floyd J. Bowers, age 76, 1436 Charity Hill Road, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, June 21, 2001 will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, with Revs. Jack Roddy, Ray Stockton, and Billy Stockton officiating. Graveside services and entombment will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2001 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors to be accorded by Capt. Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be Chris Jenkins, Gerald Jenkins, Fred Jenkins, Bill Anderson, Dan Crowe, Charles Lipford, and Lawrence Dial. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Siam Baptist Church and Staff of VA Nursing Home Unit, 2nd floor. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2001 for the graveside services.     Growing up, Ina attended Siam Baptist Church and after graduating from Elizabethton High School, she left the homeplace for the Washington, D.C. area where she met her husband while working at the National Rifle Association. Ina raised her family in Kensington, Maryland. She and her husband retired to Lighthouse Point, Florida in 1984 to enjoy the beach. Ina returned to the mountains of Tennessee that she loved in 2010, where her husband, George B. Soto Jr., of 50 years preceded her in death.

    Ina was an avid gardener, she enjoyed watching her backyard birds, the National Zoo Panda Cam, “Bonanza” reruns, and spending time with her daughters, (and feeding stray cat “Miss Kitty”). She also loved books, music and art of all kinds.

    In addition to her husband, Ina is preceded in death by her sister, Pearl Ayers; brothers, Ray and Floyd Bowers; nephew, Larry Bowers; and niece Barbara Ayers.

    Ina is survived by her twin daughters, Deborah Lee Meyer and Dianna Lynne Tucker, and her daughter, Christina Rachel Soto (Rex Whitfield); granddaughter, March Lea Gooding (Owen Bell); grandson, Jesse Dean Meyer (Louise); and great grandson, Jeremy Lee Bell.

    Mr. Hurshel W. Bowers, age 90, Jonesborough, died peaceful Sunday, November 2, 2014, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
    Mr. Bowers was born in Wise County, Virginia, and son of the late Arthur & Allie Miller Bowers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne K. Bowers; mother of his children, second wife, Wanda B. Bowers; step-mother, Pearl Bowers; sister, Betty Jo Wagner; granddaughter, Ann M. Bowers; and a son-in-law, Jim Blakeney.
    He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Norton Virginia.
    Mr. Bowers was a United States WWII Navy Veteran, having served in the South Pacific and South Atlantic. He was an auto parts store manager after the war, a coal mine owner and operator, real estate developer, an artist, and a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
    Survivors include three children, Gary L. Bowers and wife, Patty, Jonesborough, Cindy Blakeney, of the home, and Alan Bowers, Norton, VA.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 PM Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Dr. Bruce Montgomery and Minister David Clark officiating.
    The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service.
    Entombment services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Roger White, Bud McCreary, Dean Owens, Les Bryant, Al Miller, Don Royston, Lawrence Counts and Charles Steagall.

    Vearl Hagan Bowers, 91, of Alexandria, VA passed peacefully at his home on October 18, 2017. He was born to the late Earl and Gladys Bowers of Elizabethton, TN.

    At the age of 9 he moved to the DC area, and then later to Alexandria. Vearl worked at Safeway after school until the age of 16, when he joined the U.S. Navy- serving in WWII on the LST Ship # 1066. Upon returning home from the war, he started working back as Safeway as a Butcher, and then later becoming the Manager of the meat department; retiring in 1978. Vearl was a member of the Masonic Lodge #219, the Mt. Vernon Tall Cedar Lodge, and the Antique Automobile Club. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

    Vearl is predeceased by his brother; Herbert Bowers; and his first wife, Edythe Bowers. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, three daughters and their husbands, a son, an honorary son, four grandsons, and a great-grandson.

    Vearl married Edythe Frances Farrow about 1947 in , Brunswick County, Virginia Colony, . Edythe was born on 24 Feb 1928 in Scioto County, , , Ohio; died on 17 Oct 1990 in Fairfax County, , , Virginia; was buried in Mount Comfort Cemetery, , Fairfax County, Virginia.     ELIZABETHTON - Melody Dawn Carpenter, 66, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Maynard Floyd & Sara Johnson Bowers. Melody was a graduate of Hampton High School. She was a teacher’s assistant with special needs at Valley Forge Elementary School. Melody was a member of New Hope Ministries but attended Hampton First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years: Phillip Carpenter who passed away May 10, 2018 and by a brother: Jerry Bowers, Jr.

    Survivors include her sons: Phillip & Breelyn and Patrick & Pam. Six Grandchildren who called her Nanny and she took care of them until they were in school: Sara, Gracie, Phillip, Chandler, Robbie & Rachel. Her niece: Tina Brown and nephew: Jerry Bowers, Jr. Her special cousins and friends: Sharon Culler, Suzanne Berry, Debra Elliott Wade, Connie Meade, Ginger Montgomery and her special neighbors.

    Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2021 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Larry Montgomery and Rev. Norman Markland. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Friday will be: Tim Timbs, Dennis Berry, Jeff Carpenter, Chad Carpenter, Benny Montgomery, and Jeremiah Bowden. Honorary pallbearers will be her close friends.
