    JOHN H. CRESS
    John H. Cress, 67, died at his home at Mountain City Sunday night after a very short illness.
    Funeral services were conducted at Valley View Methodist church yesterday afternoon at 2:30, with the Rev. A. E. Brown officiating. Interment was in the Phillippi Cemetery.
    Mr. Cress is survived by his widow, Mrs. Debbie Cress; two daughters, Nellie Cress, Anna Bess Phillippi, both of Mountain City; five sons, Luther, Claude, Morris, Wilmer and Dudley of Mountain City; four sisters, Mrs. J. C. Scott, Bartlow, Va., Mrs. Sam Arnold, Atkins, Va., Mrs. A. J. Prater and T. L. Prather of Marion, Va.; three brothers, D. W. Cress, Harisburg, Va., J. L. Cress, Seven Mile Ford, Va., Joe Cress, Mountain City. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
    Pallbearers were Wiley Wilson, Bryant Lyons, Archie Warren, R. B. Brown, John Smith, Raymond Phillippi.

    John married Deborah Katharine "Debbie" Scott about 1894 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Deborah (daughter of James A. Scott and Margaret E.     JOE CRESS
    Funeral services for Joe Cress, 67, who died at his home here Sunday afternoon following a brief illness, were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Valley View Methodist Church, with Rev. R. W. Wilson and A. E. Browne in charge. Burial was in Phillippi Cemetery.
    In 1939 he was married to Mrs. J. E. Shupe, Mountain City, who survives him. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Maggie Prater of Marion, Va., Mrs. Alice Prater, also of Marion, Mrs. Ellie Arnold of Adkins, Va. and Mrs. Tessie Scott of Partlow, Va., and one brother, Wesley of Harrisonburg, Va.

    Mrs. Mary Ruth Cress Stout, 90, of Chapin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at her residence with family by her side after months of steadily declining health.
    Mary was born in Mountain City, TN and later in life moved to Irmo, SC and then to Chapin, SC. She was the daughter of the late Claude J. Cress and Grace Hazel Johnson Cress of Mountain City, TN.
    She retired from Allied Chemical in the early 80’s, and loved to play the piano and sing. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her devoted husband, Bert, along with her family at their beach retreat on St Helena’s Island in Beaufort, SC. The whole family spent many happy days and years catching bait and fishing off the Fripp Island bridge and surrounding areas. Such wonderful memories.
    Mary was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, David Bert Stout, Sr., her parents, two brothers, Charles Cress, and J. R. Cress of Mountain City, TN; and two sisters, Helen Hartt of Cleveland, OH and Margarite Cassidy of Irmo, SC.
    Mary is survived by two sons, Dr. David B. Stout, Jr, (Duffy), of Chapin, SC and James R, “Jim” Stout (Virginia) of Blythewood, SC, and a daughter Elaine S. Belch, (William) of Chapin, SC. Mary had five grandchildren, Erin Afanador, (Javier) of Florence SC, Joanna Robbs (John) of Charleston, SC, Erik Stout, (Bridgett) of Blythewood, SC, Patrick Belch, (Nikki) of Seneca, SC, Justin Stout (Shayla) of Asheville, NC and Andy Stout (Barbara) of Newberry, SC.; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
    Mary was immensely proud of all her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great grandchild.
    The family would like to thank the staff of Lutheran Hospice, Rachael, Teresa, Karen, Christy and Lisa, for their compassion and care shown to Mrs. Mary and our family the past few months.
    A graveside service was held at Dutch Fork Baptist Church on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 12:00 PM.

    Joseph "Keith" Cress, age 62, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Keith struggled with Multiple Sclerosis late in life and died from complications caused by the disease. Keith was a gifted mason, woodcarver and musician. He loved playing mountain music on his dulcimer. Keith was a member of Appalachian Church of Christ in Mountain City.

    He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph Dudley Cress and Edna Mae Arnold Cress of Mountain City.

    Keith is survived by one sister, Evita Henson and husband Fred of Zionville, NC; one nephew, Bradford Rambo and wife Chris-Anna of Fleetwood, NC; one niece, Tracie Henson Combs and husband Kevin of Fleetwood, NC; one great nephew, Sgt. Geoffrey "Conner" Donachy and fiancée Brianna McCoy, four grand-nieces, Meghan Davis and husband Will, Colby Hamby and husband Jimmy, Claira Donachy and Maggie Combs, two great-grand-nieces, Ella Hamby and Waverly Davis.

    A memorial service for Keith will be held Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. from Mountain City Funeral Home with Minister, Buddy Morefield and Pastor, Kevin Combs to officiate.
