Sarah Boone

Notes:

Sarah was born to Sarah Jarman Morgan and Squire Boone, Quakers of Berks County, Pennsylvania. She was the elder sister of Daniel Boone, famous frontiersman.

On May 25, 1742 (Recorded: 29 May 1742, Berks County, Pennsylvania) Sarah married John Willcockson. John was a "Worldling", not a Quaker, so this union was "Out of Unity" with the Friends of Chalfont, New Britain, Colony of Pennsylvania. It was the first offense of this kind by a member of the Boone family. Eventually Sarah and her parents would sever all fellowship with that Meeting House.

Notes:

Samuel Willcockson was a son of John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson. His mother was the oldest sister of the famed Kentucky pioneer, Daniel Boone. Samuel married Anna Jordan (1756-1840). He lived in the area of Rowan Co., NC until 1775, when he travelled to KY (in the same year that his Uncle Daniel Boone led the expedition to pave the Wilderness Road). In KY, Samuel established a claim to 1,000 acres on Licking Creek, but within a short time he returned to NC. By the 1790s, Samuel had moved his family to present Ashe Co., NC, where he would live until about 1815, when he once again went to KY. This time, Samuel settled in what was Estill County and is now part of Lee Co., KY. After his death, his widow and several of his children moved further west to Fulton Co., IL. It should be noted that there is a discrepancy regarding the date of death of Samuel Willcockson. His gravestone shows his date of death as "NVR 1825". The family bible of his grandson, Isaac Aaron Willcoxson, gives his death date as 16 September, 1825. Estill Co., KY records indicate that both of these dates are likely incorrect. Samuel's name is found on the Estill County tax lists until 1827, and the inventory of his estate was recorded in Estill County in March, 1827. Therefore, it is believed that Samuel probably died in early 1827.

Norfolk - Mrs. Frances Moody Hipps, 74, of 8509 Ocean View Road, the wife of Jay A. Hipps and a native of Asheville, NC, died Thursday in her home. She lived here for 34 years and was a member of Norview Presbyterian Church. Other survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Alliene Thomas Warren of Asheville, Mrs. Lois Carolyn Canaday, Mrs. Betty Jean King, Mrs. Frances H. Doughty, and Mrs. Martha H. Davis of Norfolk, and Mrs. Sara T. Belles of Los Angeles, CA; two sons, James Robert Thomas of Tullahoma, TN, and Frederick A. Hipps of Gulfport, MS; 28 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 pm in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Lawton W. Posey and Dr. Wallace A. Rogers. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Saturday from 7 pm to 9 pm. They also will be at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Kenneth K. King of 4532 Shoshone Court, Norfolk.

Joe Trivett, age 95, died Monday, December 2, at McKinley Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for several weeks.

Funeral services will be at graveside, Locust Grove cemetery at 9:30 am Thursday.

Trivett had pioneered in the region back of Brewster Flat when he was a young man, had been living alone in Brewster for many years. The Herald Report was unable to learn much about Trivett except for an interview with him a year ago. He then told the paper that when he got tired of living in Brewster he would go home to North Carolina to died. He was unable to fulfill the dream.

Trivett is survived by a son, David, Salt Lake City; another son, George, Bellingham; a son Earl, Elizabethton, Tenn; and a daughter, Mrs. Wilma Patrick.

Robert L. Moody lived in Johnson City, possibly from 1900 to around 1918. From there, he moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky, where he was in the logging business with his father, Thomas C. Moody. In about 1926, he and his family moved to Canton, Ohio. Following the death of his wife, Aletha Tolley Moody, he moved back to Johnson City, where he married Marjorie Lewis. He and his family lived on Market Street Extension until about 1942, when he went back to Canton.

May have been married for a very short time to a woman before marrying Marjorie Lewis.

ROGERSVILLE — Mary Ida Ray Kensinger was born in Butler, TN, on January 6, 1914, and passed away on August 3, 2011, at Wellmont Bristol Hospice.

She was raised in Mountain City, TN. Mary attended East Tennessee State University, where she earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Mrs. Kensinger worked for many years as the office manager for the Tennessee State Employment Service both in Johnson City and in Rogersville. She also worked for a number of years as the office manager of Hawkins County Memorial Hospital followed by twelve years as librarian at H.B. Stamps Memorial Library. In 1975, Mrs. Kensinger retired.

Mary Ray married J.C. Kensinger on September 15, 1945. They made Rogersville their home for the remainder of their lives.

A very talented and creative woman, Mrs. Kensinger wrote and acted in an outdoor drama, "Davey Crockett," which was performed for five years at the Rogersville Bicentennial Pageant. She was an avid genealogist with particular interest in Hawkins County families. She spent several decades researching and cataloging deaths in Hawkins County, compiling material for the Historical Society there.

Mrs. Kensinger was also an avid bridge player well into her 97th year.

She and her husband were members of Rogersville Presbyterian Church, where Mrs. Kensinger served in a number of capacities with the Women of the Church. She was also a member of the Hawkins County Genealogical and Historical Society.

In 2004, Mrs. Kensinger received the ETSU Outstanding Alumna award. She was listed in the 1981-82 Who's Who of American Women and was charter president of the Rogersville Business & Professional Women's Club. She also established the J.C. Kensinger Memorial Scholarship Endowment at ETSU in memory of her late husband.

Mrs. Kensinger was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph Todd Ray and Bessie Trivett Ray; brother: Boyd Sam Ray and sister: Margaret Ray Dillon all of Mountain City. She is survived by a stepdaughter: Jann Kensinger Walker; Jonesville, Virginia; nieces: Suzanne Ray Cox of Abington, Virginia, Libby Ray Talton of Mountain City and nephew: Dr. Joseph Alan Ray, Mountain City.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kensinger will be held on Saturday afternoon, August 6, at 2PM at Rogersville Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 1PM. Burial will be in McKinney Cemetery, Rogersville.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Kensinger's caregivers, Billy Coffey and Charlotte Caldwell, for the wonderful job they did during her last years.

Lena Frances Moody DeLoach was born on August 13th, 1920 in Pulaski County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Robert Lafette Moody and his wife Aleatha E. Tolley. Her mother died when she was 8 years old, so she helped raise her younger brother and sister.

She grew up during the Great Depression, and her family moved several times between Kentucky and Tennessee seeking employment. Her family moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1924, and to Waynesburg, Kentucky, in 1925. In 1929, they moved back to Canton, and in 1931, to Johnson City, Tennessee.
In 1938, she met and married Javan Astor "Mike" DeLoach in Johnson City, Tennessee. Over the next 25 years, they had five children: Michael in 1938, Craig in 1940, Eric in 1947, Joseph in 1960 and Jane in 1963. She liked to tell people that she had children in school for forty years, Michael starting school in 1943 and Jane getting her masters degree in 1987.

Lena and her husband loved the outdoors, taking frequent hikes in the mountains with the children. She also enjoyed Sunday car rides and picnics, and she dearly loved her farm.

Lena was a traditional stay at home mother for most of her life. She was a Den Mother for Pack 38, sponsored by the Calvary Presbyterian Church. In 1959, they bought a farm in the Fairview community of Washington County, Tennessee. There, the family became members of the Fairview United Methodist Church.

After her youngest children were in elementary school, Lena got a job in the
cafeteria at Jonesborough Middle School. During that time, she went to night school and got her high school GED diploma. After getting her diploma, she worked in the math learning lab at Jonesborough Middle School. Her husband Mike DeLoach predeceased her in 1996. Left to grieve her passing are her five children: Michael and his wife Dorothy, Craig, Eric and his wife Judy, Joe, Jane Morison and her husband Whit; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 7th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Dillow-Taylor Funeral home in Jonesborough. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 8th at Fairview Cemetery.

Helen M. Rambo (DiMarzio) of Canton went to meet her Maker on November 26, 2006. She was residing at Manor Care of Belden Village and had been living with dementia for several years. She was born July 25, 1925 in Alliance, OH to the late Robert L. and Aletha (Towley) Moody. She was a waitress for many years at Angelo's Spaghetti House, Russlee's and ChaRazzo's restaurants. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Angelo DiMarzio in 1985 and Willis L. Rambo in 1992 and several brothers. Kathleen Moody Parrish, age 79, of Marion, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 at The McDowell Hospital. Mrs. Parrish was born in Johnson City, TN on July 28, 1934 and was a daughter of the late Robert Moody and Marjorie Lewis Garvan. Kathleen enjoyed sewing, knitting and all kinds of crafts. She loved to feed people through her excellent baking. She loved her family very much and was known to be a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.

JOHNSON CITY - Geneva L. Douglas, age 89, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.

A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late Ervin and Eliza Ellen Sparks. Mrs. Douglas was a Baptist. She loved going fishing and to go to church. She played the piano by ear, and was self-taught. She served as a church pianist for many years.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Douglas is preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Roy, David, and Frank Sparks; sisters, Kate Furchess, Chelsea Lee Anders, and Mildred Mabel.

Survivors include her husband, John Douglas, Johnson City; sons, Kenneth Wayne Douglas and Darrell Lynn Douglas and wife Virginia, all of Tallahassee, Florida; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; sister, Alice Marie Sutton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Douglas will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 8, 2017 in the East Parlor of the funeral home with Rev. Albert Jarnagin officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.

Roy Al-len Sparks, born No-vem-ber 18, 1936, son of the late Ervin and Eliza Sparks of John-son City, TN. He died peace-fully at the John-son City Med-i-cal Center on Fri-day, April 24, 2015, at the age of 78 af-ter a brief ill-ness of can-cer.
Roy Sparks was a won-der-ful and great pro-vider for his fam-ily and loved by us all. He loved to go fish-ing and hunt-ing.
Roy served our coun-try in the US Army. He worked in sales at RC Cola, Rainbo Bak-ery, Pepsi, Dolly Madi-son, Sun-beam, Wise and Sara Lee. Be-fore re-tir-ing he was awarded sales-man of the year twice.
Roy was a long time and ac-tive mem-ber of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1831, where he liked spend-ing time with friends. Roy al-ways kept a smile on his face and made many peo-ple happy.

BRISTOL - Horace Ledwell Jr., age 77, of 4241 Old Jonesboro Rd., Bristol, TN, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born October 25, 1928, in Johnson City, Tn., a son of the late Horace M. and Mary Josephine Light Ledwell, and has lived in the area since 1980. He attended Valley Pike Presbyterian Church. He served 49 years as a merchant seaman, delivered supplies during the Vietnam War & Desert Storm, and visited many ports around the World.

He was preceded in death by sister, Rosemary Ledwell Metts; and brother, Franklin Monroe Ledwell.

He is survived by: Brothers: Richard L. Ledwell and wife, Evelyn, Ronald E. Ledwell and wife, Sandy, Sister: Margie Grindstaff and husband, William P.; Several Nieces and Nephews; Special Nephew: Richard L. Ledwell II; Special Friend: Dr. William A. Wiley.

A funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bill Goforth and Rev. Claude Pennington officiating. Margie had previously attended Keystone Freewill Baptist Church when her health allowed.

Frances D. Walker, 76, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2015 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Walker was a Washington County native and daughter of the late Oscar and Mable Ledwell Furches.

She was a Boones Creek High School graduate.

Mrs. Walker once owned a boutique in South Carolina before moving back to Tennessee. Also, Mrs. Walker worked several years for the civil service.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Walker was an avid reader.
