Reba Mast Freeman, 90, lost her battle with Parkinson’s on April 24, 2023.

Reba was the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Cleo Baird, born in Valle Crucis, NC.

In addition to her parents, Reba is preceded in death by her first husband and father of her girls, Billy B. Mast, and by her second husband, Delaney T. Freeman; infant brother, Harlon Baird; and sisters, Iva Nell Saylor (late Ed) and Jewel Shipley (late Baxter).

Reba Freeman is survived by five daughters and their spouses, Judy Shoun (Jerry), Barbara Bodnar, Bonnie Roope, Joan Doyle (Mike) and Kim Terry (Steve); stepson, Larry; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with two more on the way; siblings, Tommy Baird (late Carolyn), and Henry Baird (Patsy); and many nieces and nephews.

Reba was eternally grateful for the care and companionship she received throughout the years from her grandson, Daniel. The family would like to express their appreciation for caregivers Jennifer, April, Phyllis, and the staff of Amedysis Hospice.

Reba was a long-time member of Boones Creek Baptist Church, Guaranda Baptist Church and Unaka Avenue Baptist Church in Johnson City, TN. She retired from Appalachian Oil Company.

A graveside service will be held for Reba at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, TN. Chaplain Steven Spell will officiate, with prayer offered by her forever friend, Chloe Boyd.

JOHNSON CITY - Jewel Fern Baird Shipley, 80, Johnson City, died Sunday, March 19, 2023, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

Jewel was a native of Watauga County, NC, and lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Henry Clay and Georgia Cleota Snyder Baird.

Jewel received her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from East Tennessee State University.

She began her health care career in 1966 with the Washington County Health Department as a staff nurse in the Child Health and Family Planning Clinics. In 1983, Jewel moved to the Northeast Tennessee Regional Health Office where she held multiple positions, including Child Health and Development Nursing Consultant, Maternal and Child Health Nursing Consultant, and Regional Director of Children’s Special Services Program, retiring in 2009 after forty-three years of dedicated Public Health Nursing services. Jewel was proud to have been awarded the Federal Southeast Region Maternal and Child Health Nursing Award. She was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Public Health Association and formerly served on their Nursing Board. Jewel was also a longtime Volunteer Nurse for the American Red Cross.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jewel enjoyed spending time at the family’s second home, Venture Out of Gatlinburg, sewing and playing Solitaire.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, Baxter Hamer Shipley, in 2020, her daughter, Melissa Shipley Slagle, in 1995, a granddaughter, Zoe Bryann Shipley, in 2019, a sister, Iva Saylor, and an infant brother, Harlan Baird.

Jewel is survived by two sons, Bryan Shipley, Jonesborough, Robert Shipley and wife Laura, Jonesborough; three grandchildren, Jessica Slagle De La Vega and husband Salvador, Ty Shipley, Sara Shipley Hood and husband Morgan, all of Jonesborough; three great-grandchildren, Rylie De La Vega, Ava De La Vega, and Kimber Hood, all of Jonesborough; son-in-law, Johnny Slagle; one sister, Reba Freeman, Johnson City; two brothers, Thomas Baird, Gray, and Henry Baird, Morristown; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

JOHNSON CITY - Nora Louise Farthing Graybeal, 91, of Johnson City, TN went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday afternoon February 18, 2017, at her residence in Johnson City.

Mrs. Graybeal was born June 19, 1925 in Boone, NC to the late William L. & Addie Mae Shull Farthing. Nora Louise grew up in Sugar Grove, NC and moved to Johnson City to work in 1943. Nora Louise was a member of East Unaka Church of Christ (Christian Church) and attended other churches with her children over the years; most recently at Crossroads Christian Church when she was able. She enjoyed teaching ages 2-3 year olds Sunday School. Louise enjoyed caring for her grandchildren among others. Her smiles and laughter will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Nina Graybeal Snyder, a dear son-in-law Farrell Snyder, one brother William Jesse Farthing, three Sisters Melba Mae Farthing, Masel McCoy and Cornelia Graham

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons Dennis Graybeal & wife Judy, Melvin Graybeal & wife Nanalea; two daughters Patsy Hurley & husband Gary, Janice Tester & husband Bennie; one sister Velma Brown & husband Talmadge; one brother Howard Farthing & wife Mary; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren.

On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Mrs. Velma Brown, 89, of Erwin, Tennessee, was escorted by angels from the Governor’s Bend Assisted Living facility to her mansion in Heaven where she met her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was surrounded by her family as she stepped into Glory and was reunited with family and friends who had gone on before.

Velma was born on October 18, 1933, to William L. Farthing and Addie Mae Shull Farthing of Telford, Tennessee. She fell in love with Talmadge Brown of Chuckey (Liberty Community), TN, and they were married on December 31, 1953. They were called to ministry in the early 1960s and continued to faithfully serve as pastor and wife in several Free Will Baptist churches until their health would not allow them to do so.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jesse Farthing, sisters infant Melba Mae Farthing, Louise Graybeal, Cornelia Graham, and Masel McCoy.

She is survived by her husband Rev. Talmadge Brown of Erwin, brother Howard Farthing (Mary) of Jonesboro, sons Norman Brown (Cathy) of Erwin, Kyle Brown (Karen) of Gastonia, NC, daughters Diana Postlewaite (Sam) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Connie Pridgen (Rob) of Kellyton, AL, as well as 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Velma enjoyed caring for her family, sewing, reading, cooking, and working jigsaw puzzles.

Visitation will be held at Valley Funeral Home in Erwin on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM with the celebration of life service to follow at 7:00 PM. Interment will be at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church (91 Guy Brown Road, Chuckey Tennessee) at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 29, 2023. Curtis Hurt of Grace FWB will officiate.

The family would like to express heart-felt appreciation to the Governor’s Bend and Caris Hospice caregivers. These special people started out as staff but became family to all of us.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Anna Joy Baird Penley, age 93, Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Penley was born September 18, 1928, in Watauga County, NC, and the daughter of the late John Frederick & Letha Ann Yates Baird. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Penley in 1998, son, John Frederick “Freddie” Penley, one granddaughter, Letha Marie Snodgrass and several brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church.

Mrs. Penley was a Registered Nurse and had worked at Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Johnson City Medical Center before retiring.

Survivors include four children, Dale Penley (Paula), Johnson City, Cecilia Ann Simpson (Roger), Gray, Vanessa Snodgrass (Billy Joe, Jr.), Hickory, NC and Terri Greenwell (Jack), Bluffton, SC; three sisters and one brother; eight grandchildren, Justin Penley, Daniel Simpson, Amanda Simpson, Lauren Bassett-Penley (Daniel), Blake Penley, B.J. Snodgrass III (Morgan), Lashay Dulaney (Robert), and Katie Greenwell (Stephen); and six great-grandchildren, John Conley Snodgrass, Ryan Jennings, McKenzie Dulaney, Logan Dulaney, Raine Bledsoe and Mattie Bledsoe.

Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Friday, May 13, 2022, at Washington County Memory Gardens with Pastor Jody Jenkins officiating.

KINGSPORT - Mr. Charles “Yates” Baird, age 78, Kingsport, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Orchard View Rehab Center.

Mr. Baird was born in Carter County and the son of the late John Frederick & Letha Ann Yates Baird. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Garst Baird.

He was a United States Air Force Veteran.

Mr. Baird was a retired mechanic for the Kingsport Press.

Faye was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a lifelong resident of Piney Flats, TN. She was a member of Piney Flats First Baptist Church for many years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Gene Williams; daughters, Linda Williams Snow and Lea Ann Williams Rasar; grandchildren, Zachary Snow and Presley Anna Rasar; siblings, Shirley Thomas, Bill Baird and wife Yvonne, Lawrence Baird and wife Aurelia, Kay Warren, and Sharon Blevins and husband Luke; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Earnest Gibb Barlow, and sisters Marilyn Vaught, Marietta Forrester, and brothers, Charles Jody Baird, and Denver Baird. She Loved Witnessing for the Lord, singing with her nursing home ministry, flower gardening, music.

Helen “Jeannette” Boswell, February 23, 1930 – May 9, 2021, passed from this life to spend eternity with Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 9th, 2021 at the age of 91. She was born February 23, 1930 in Elizabethton, TN to Anna Louise Baird Lyons and Willie Andrew Lyons. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Charles Clinton (Clint) Boswell and by her two brothers, Darrel and Kenneth Lyons. She leaves behind four sons, Ronnie (Sandy), Dennis (Shanna), Bill (Bea) and Terry (Betsy) Boswell. She also leaves ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Jeannette attended Elizabethton High School and trained to be a bookkeeper at a local business college. She enjoyed playing the trumpet in the high school band, playing the piano and singing as a teenager in the Harmony Four Girls Quartet on local radio programs. As a senior adult she and Clint enjoyed singing with the Musical Voices Choir associated with the Johnson City Senior Citizens Center giving concerts in churches and nursing homes throughout the area. She and Clint continued a strong Christian heritage and were faithful members of Central Baptist Church of Johnson City.

A memorial service will be held at Morris-Baker Funeral Home at 2001 E. Oakland Ave., in Johnson City, TN at 12:00 pm on Friday, May 14, 2021. The family will welcome friends prior to the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Mountain Home National cemetery (Historical Section) at 2:00 pm following the memorial service.
