David Fuller Stout, age 60 of Route 3, Mountain City, Doe Valley community, died at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Banner Elk, N.C., Monday at 1:00 a.m. from a heart attack. He was the son of the late Hamilton and Sarah Wills Stout; a native of Johnson County, a farmer and member of the Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Cora Lee Stout, Mountain City; one brother, Raymond Stout of Mountain City; three sisters, Mrs. Eula Swift, Mountain City; Mrs. Hattie Robinson, Mountain City, and Mrs. Etta Roberts, Alexandria, Virginia; also a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the Bethany Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. C.H. Smith and Rev. Earl Campbell officiating. Burial was in Shoun cemetery.

TRADE — Lucille J. Reece, age 88, of Trade, TN, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center. Lucille was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and a daughter of the late Noah and Effie Johnson Jenkins. She was a member of Centerview Church of Christ. In addition to her parents Mrs. Reece was also preceded in death by her husband William M. Reece and two sisters, Ella Ree Zebley and Jewell Mae Goff. Survivors include four sons, William E. MOUNTAIN CITY — Hazel Bess "Nini" Wilson, age 99, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was born to the late Dan and Jessie Wilson on February 6, 1912.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two children: Shirley Wilson and Richard "Dick" Wilson; brothers: Fred, Aurther, Shortie, Junior, Boyd and Ray Wilson; and a sister, Ruby Forrester.

Hazel is survived by her grandson, Thomas D. Wilson and wife, Dianne, of the home; granddaughter, Kelly Perkins, of Greenville, Tennessee; four great granddaughters: Christina Perkins, Taylor Tester, Lindsey and Courtney Wilson; sisters: Maxine King and Norma Jean Lowe; brother, J.C. Wilson; daughter-in-law, Sue Wilson; several nieces and nephews; and special friends: Kaye Atwood and Laura Davis.

Ms. Hazel worked for the Johnson County School System for nearly 50 years. During that time, she worked as a teacher, substitute, secretary and an assistant. She is well remembered for the stories she shared with many children over the years

Ms. Hazel was a charter member of Dewey Christian Church, where she was a faithful member. She loved spending time with her family and visitors. Ms. Hazel lived a long full life and will be sadly missed.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m on Sunday, April 17, 2011, at Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Ministers C.D. "Bud" Gentry and Jim Hutchinson to officiate.

ELIZABETHTON - Johnie Eleanor Pierce Estep, 86, Elizabethton passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital , with her loving children by her side.

Born June 22, 1931 to John B. and Amanda Wilson Pierce. Johnie was a homemaker and also a retired housekeeper at the Carter County Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, N. D. Estep and one son David Estep.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Estep and four sons, Hobert (Wess Lee), Roger, Larry "Cap" (Linda) and Douglas Estep and fur baby, Sally. Also, left to cherish her memory are four grandchildren, Tammy Lancaster (Nathan), Crystal Bilbery (Daniel), Brian Estep (Audra), and Daverelle Estep and several great-grandchildren. Johnie is also survived by her half-sisters, Wanda Johnson, Naomi Pierce and Margie Pierce and half-brothers J. B. Pierce and Edgar Pierce and several nieces and nephews.

Mayor F. E. Robinson, 56, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, after several months of ill health. Robinson had been mayor of Mountain City for the past 17 years.
A lifelong resident of Johnson County, Robinson was a prominent farmer and a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Leona Greer Robinson, of the home, and one brother, Allan Robinson of Rt. 3, Mountain City.

E. ROBINSON, A PROGRESSIVE PUBLIC SERVANT.
The community and surrounding area lost a useful public servant and one of its most civic-minded leaders with the passing of Mayor F. E. Robinson.
He was born and lived his entire life in this community. His educational preparation for the useful life he led was acquired in the public schools of the county and through his own business endeavors in the various businesses in which he engaged.
He was one of the pioneers in the promotion and development of the green bean industry in the area, and continued his activity and interest in the industry as one of the principal factors of our economy. He always manifested a desire to better the plight of the community and its people.
Mr. Robinson was active in church and civil affairs, to the end.
The last 15 years of his life he served the town of Mountain City as alderman and mayor. He was also a member of the Johnson County Industrial Commission at the time of his death. His desire to make a better life for his people made him an ardent proponent of industry for Johnson County.
His progressive leadership as a public servant while mayor was exemplified in the erection of the modern municipal building which he and his board of alderman made possible. It was one of his contributions of which he was proudest.
He is survived by his wife, the former Leona Greer, and a brother, Allen Robinson.
Funeral services were conducted from the Valley View Methodist Church. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.

ELIZABETHTON - Elmer Gordon Brookshire, Sr, 97, of Elizabethton, passed away December 11, 2016, following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Sherman Gaines & Amanda Mae Stout Brookshire, born November 26, 1919 in Doe Valley in Johnson County, TN.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Hazel Williams and son-in-law, Bill Sheppard.

Mr. Brookshire was a former member of East Side Baptist Church in Elizabethton and current member of Bethany Baptist Church, Mountain City, TN. He attended Johnson County High School. Having lost his father at the age of 13, he discontinued his education during the 11th grade to help run the farm and care for his mother and sister. He served in the Army/Air Force during WWII, 1943-1945, serving in the Philippines, doing plane maintenance and rescuing air crew men shot down near Philippine Islands. While his primary calling was a farmer, he worked at Glenn L. Martin Company in MD building airplanes. After returning to Tennessee he enrolled in agricultural classes and began his lifetime career in farming. He was primarily a beef cattle and tobacco farmer but also raised dairy cows and produce. In the early 1960s he began selling insurance for Federal Crop Insurance Corporation and retired in 1988 as a supervisor. Farming was not a chore but a passion, one he enjoyed up until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances Frye Brookshire; children: Dottie Brookshire, Johnson City, Sharon Sheppard, Rebecca Brookshire, both of Elizabethton and John (Kathy) Brookshire, Mountain City; Grandchildren: Zachary (Laura) Sheppard, Amanda Sheppard, Great granddaughter, Penelope Sheppard all of Elizabethton; an "adopted" daughter Dr. Julia Decker and children, Kristina (Abel) Cusatti, Renee (Tim) Moore and Kimberly (Brent) McNeal and their children; Son, Gordon (Barbara) Brookshire, Jr., of Bluff City, grandchildren Jack Brookshire, Vancouver, Oregon, Tara Kane Brookshire, Bristol, TN, Sarah Knight, Bluff City, TN. Great grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Amanda and Jesse. Nieces, Teresa Carter and Denise Holbrook and families. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He also leaves behind Willie, his Great Pyrenees dog. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2016, 5pm – 7pm at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, TN and Thursday, 5pm – 7pm at Bethany Baptist Church, Mountain City, TN with services to follow at 7pm. Dr. Gale Hartley and Wilkie Brookshire will officiate; music will be provided by John Brookshire and Danny Hilbert. Graveside services will be Friday, at 11 am at the Brookshire Cemetery, Campbell Road, Mountain City, TN. Military Honors will be by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Family and friends will meet at the church at 10:30 am Friday to go to the cemetery. Friends may call at the home of his daughter, Sharon Sheppard, Elizabethton, or John Brookshire, Mountain City at other times. MOUNTAIN CITY — Alex Snyder, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was born on March 12, 1922, to the late Noah and Ollie Martin Snyder. In addition to his parents, Alex was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Nave Snyder, who passed away on January 23, 2012; sisters, Eureka Grindstaff and Susie Kimberlin; and brothers, Martin Snyder, D.L. Snyder, Robert Snyder and Sanford Snyder. Like most men of his generation, Alex was a proud American Farmer but his true love was carpentry work. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and TN Vols fan. Alex loved his family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren beyond measure and he always had time for his family. He was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his daughter, Kathy Greever; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Helen Snyder, all of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren, Amanda Greever of Louisville, TN, Chad Greever and wife Amber, Tracy Snyder and wife Wendy, all of Mountain City, TN and Rebekah Davenport and husband Charles of Beaumont, TX; great grandchildren, Trey Snyder and Emily Snyder; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Anne Eureka Snyder Grindstaff, age 89, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Mountain City Care Center, Mountain City, Tennessee after a lengthy illness. She was born in Johnson County on January 18, 1925 to the late Noah Snyder and Ollie Martin Snyder.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, C. Robert (Bob) Grindstaff; one sister, Susie Kimberlin and four brothers, Martin, D. L., Robert, and Sanford Snyder.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Danny) Cunningham and Deana (Larry) Shoun; two sons, Joe Eric and Jerry Grindstaff; one brother, Alex Snyder; sister-in-law, Pearl G. Snyder; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Eureka was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church (Shouns community) and served as Sunday school teacher for four-five year olds for more than 20 years. She was a supervisor at the Leco Mfg. Co. for approximately 8 years and was a teacher assistant and substitute teacher for several years.

A receiving of friends will be held 1:30 P.M. – 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 3385 Roan Creek Rd., Mountain City, with the funeral service to follow at 2:30 P.M. Services will be conducted by Rev. Warren Stewart and Rev. Jim Norman with music provided by Elaine Moore, Donna Fritts and Joe Simcox. Graveside service and interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Peter Kelley, Freddie Hicks, Todd Grayson, Rick Moore, Harry Cunningham, Tom Fortune and Howard Morefield. Mary Evelyn Sargent, age 94, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from Signature Health Center and Rehab of Elizabethton. Mary was born in Carter County to the late Arthur Mack Wilson and Lottie Margaret Lewis. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Richard Lee (R.L.) Sargent; a daughter, Barbara Lee Wilson; two brothers, Millard Wilson and Lester Wilson; and three sons-in-law, Gary Burrow, Carl D. Hardin and Wilbur C. Banks.
Mary retired from Raytheon Corporation, where she had worked as an inspector. She was a wonderful mother and caregiver and will be very missed by her family and friends. Mary was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Golden Group. Mary loved to read, she loved children, gardening, hummingbirds, flowers- especially red flowers. She also enjoyed riding motorcycles, ATVs, going to the beach, camping, helping people and fighting for the “underdog” and those who could not fend for themselves.
Those left to cherish her many wonderful memories include two daughters, Shirley Ann Banks, of Unicoi, TN and Robert Jean Campbell and her husband Ed, of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Hughes and husband Chris, of Unicoi, TN and Nicholas Hardin, of Elizabethton; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Vance, Kelsey Hughes, Jaelyn Hardin and Tennyson Hardin; three great-great-grandchildren, Tristan Marotto, Piper Anna Lee Vance and Addison Vance; a goddaughter, Rosalee Oaks and family; two godsons, Larry and Brenda Peters and their family and Jimmy and Barbara Peters and their family; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Rose Vaughn; and a son-in-law, Larry E. Wilson. Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as a special friends, Natalie Stout and Norman Garland.
A service to celebrate the life of Mary Evelyn Sargent will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2021, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Reverend Nick Colbaugh officiating. Music will be under the direction of the New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church Quartet, Reverend Kevin Laws and Joe Sargent. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.
The committal and entombment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2021, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Reverend Kevin Laws officiating. JONESBOROUGH - Lester H. Wilson, 88, of Jonesborough, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the VA Medical Center.

A native of Carter County he was the son of the late Arthur M. Wilson and Lottie (Lewis) Wilson. Les was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Johnson City where he was a greeter. Les proudly served our country in the United States Navy, later working for American General where he retired after many years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing with his son, Mike, and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Les is preceded in death by an infant son, James McArthur Wilson; brother, Millard Wilson; and special friend and golfing buddy, Charlie Miller.

Those left to cherish Les' memory include: his wife of 67 years, Norma Wilson; children Michael Douglas Wilson of the home and Donna Wilson Polly, and her husband, Michael Polly of Johnson City; his only granddaughter who carries his namesake, Lessa LeeAnne Wilson; sister, Evelyn Sargent; several nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

The family will gather to greet friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services. A committal and interment service will follow at the Eden United Methodist Church Cemetery in Jonesborough. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Ina Marie Wilson Parlier, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Monday, April 4, 2022, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born March 16, 1939 in Carter County to the late Charles and Ollie Peeks Wilson.
Ina was a graduate of Unaka High School. She was retired from Inland Container after 40 years of service.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Scalf; three brothers, Kyle, Edward and Mack Wilson; and two sisters, Faye Shank and Margaret Wilson Jones.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Deana (Craig) Thomas, Travis (Rosella) Scalf and Colt Scalf, all of Elizabethton; six great-grandchildren, Brooke, Abby, Koty, Katy, Kyndal and Kymber; four great-great-grandchildren, Noah, Jaxson, Ellie and Mason; three special nieces, Jennifer Jenkins, Brittany Colbaugh and Martha Cable; and several nephews.
It was her wish to be cremated and no services are planned at this time.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Mrs. Frances Wilson Smith, age 92, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Mountain City Care Center.

Mrs. Smith was born on November 11, 1926 to the late Tyler and Anna (Wills) Wilson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Fred Lee Smith Jr. who passed away in 1985; two brothers, J.T. Wilson and Paul Wilson and one sister, Mabel Shoun.

Mrs. Smith was a member of First Christian Church of Mountain City, Friendship Sunday School Class, H.I.S (His In Service), Nellie Bryan Guild (Ladies organization) and member of the church choir. She was a member of the following community organizations: Eastern Star, Rotary Club, Family and Community Education Club, Retired Teachers Organization and the Wednesday Music Club, where she held various roles through the years.

Mrs. Smith received her BS and Masters Degree + 45 hours from the University of Tennessee. She retired from the Johnson County School System in 1998 after being employed for 46 years. During this time she was Vocational Director the last 15 years and was very active in the community and state activities. Mrs. Smith was instrumental in development of the Aquaculture Program at the Johnson County Vocational School.

In 1998 she received the Honorary FFA Degree and the FFA Eagle Award. In 2004 she was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. She loved her community and her county and was always volunteering for various charities.

Mrs. Smith was a big UT football and basketball fan. She had even played basketball at Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens, TN and University of Tennessee.

Those left to cherish her memories include a daughter, Gaylia Leigh Whetsel; grandson, Eric Lee Whetsel, all of Johnson City, a sister, Mary Earle Elliott of Gate City, VA, special niece, Dinah Jeffries; nieces, Anna Catherine Graunke and JoAnn Elliott; nephews, Paul Shoun Jr., Wilson Elliott and Marshall Elliott and several great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the First Christian Church. Funeral service will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Dwayne Dickson officiating. Eulogy will be given by Minnie Miller and special prayer by Buddy Zuercher. Special music will be under the direction of Nancy Davis and Annette Greer.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2019 at the Phillippi Cemetery. First Christian Church Elders and Deacons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Shine, Dr. Khan, Daniel Jones, John Payne and Eastern Star and Rotary Club Members.

Roger Wade Estep, 70, Elizabethton, passed away on April 20, 2022, surrounded by his family. Roger was the son of the late N.D. Estep and Johnie Pierce Estep. He was also preceded in death by a brother, David Estep, who passed right after birth.
Roger served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era and retired from James H. Quillen Veterans Hospital. He enjoyed his family, traveling and playing golf.
Survivors include his daughters, Tammy Lancaster (Nathan) and Crystal Bilbery (Daniel); his grandchildren, Noah, Hayden, Adamina, Fletcher, and Sophie. He is also survived by three brothers, John Hobert, Larry “Capp” and Doug Estep; one special sister, Joyce “Sissy” Estep; special friend, Kaye Moody; an uncle and several cousins; and his fur baby “Little Bit” the one-eyed cat.
Graveside services for Roger will be held at the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) on Tuesday, April 26, at 11 a.m., with Military Honors being provided by Veterans Honor Guard DAV 39 Bluff City. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Mr. Dean L. Stout, age 78, of 1186 Stout Branch Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013, in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
Dean was born on February 7, 1935, in Johnson County, Tennessee, to the late D.L. Snyder and Virginia Stout Coffey. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Dale Stout.
Dean was a member of Vaught's Gap Baptist Church and regularly attended the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church also. Dean enjoyed working with his backhoe and farming, especially working with his cattle.
Dean was a current Johnson County Commissioner, a former Circuit Court clerk for eight years and a United States Marine Corps Veteran.
He was a former member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679 F&AM in Butler, Tennessee, and a 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include: son, Michael L. and wife, Vicki A. Stout, of Mountain City, Tennessee; two sisters, Nancy Jacobs and husband, Alton, Mountain City, Tennessee, and Linda Arnold and husband, Terry, of Elizabethton, Tennessee; one brother, Tommy Coffey and wife, Linda, of Mountain City, Tennessee; grandchildren, Carli Stanley and husband, Justin, Hampton, Tennessee, and Calli Rae Smith, Mountain City, Tennessee. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Dean will be conducted on Saturday, November 9, 2013, from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Norman and Rev. Chuck Morefield to officiate. Music will be under the direction of Joe Simcox.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service hour. Pallbearers will be Roby Dunn, Dwayne Arney, Bill Shepperd, Jerry Stanley, Scott Matheson, Joe Stanley, Jerry Grindstaff and Alton Jacobs. Honorary pallbearers will be Commissioners of Johnson County, Bill Wilson, Bill Burcheaus, Freddey Phipps, Jay Mink, Ernest Tester, Bill Michaels, Eddie Forbes and Terry Shull. Military graveside services will be conducted from the Stout Family Cemetery following the funeral, accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

Barbara Lee Wilson, age 62, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 13, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.

She was a daughter of Mary Evelyn Wilson Sargent, Elizabethton and the late Richard Lee Sargent and was born in Carter County. Mrs. Wilson was a retired LPN and worked at several area hospitals during her life. She was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church and a member of the Golden Group at Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Wilson enjoyed cross-stitching, painting, working puzzle books and working ceramics. She loved cats, dogs and children.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Ruby Wilson; and a brother-in-law, Carl D. Hardin.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 39 years, Larry E. Wilson, of the home; two sisters, Shirley Banks and husband, Wilbur, Unicoi; Roberta Campbell and husband, Ed, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Barbara Presnell and husband, Mike, Johnson City; two brothers-in-law, Lester Wilson and wife, Verna, North Carolina, Michael Wilson and wife, Lynn, Jonesborough; three nieces, Alisha Ferren, Mary Ann Hughes and husband, Chris, and Michelle Nichols; two nephews, Jonathan Presnell and Nicholas Hardin; three great nieces, Courtney Hughes, Kelsey Hughes and Harper Ferren; four great-nephews, Deacon Ferren, Jaelyn Hardin, Tynnesson Hardin, Sage Nichols; and a special friend, Donna.
