James Franklin Grindstaff, 72, died at his home at Doeville, route 1, at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, following a lingering illness. He was a member and superintendent of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

General Moreland, 50, died at the home of his brother, Ex-sheriff, J. M. Moreland, at Carter Monday afternoon after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at the home of J. M. She was a native of Carter County, daughter of the late David King Carriger and Ida Grindstaff Carriger. Betty was a retired manager of the Motherhood Maternity Store. She was a member of the Snow Memorial Baptist Church and had taught Sunday School for many years.

Betty loved gardening, sewing and anything that included her grandchildren and their activities.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Edwards Jr.; a daughter, Debbie Hammett; three brothers, Norman, Cliff and Bill Carriger; three sisters, Georgie Kinley, Ina Murr and Evelyn Waycaster.

Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law, Karen E. and Jon Harvey, of Johnson City; five grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law, Emily Harvey, of Denver, Colorado, Allie Harvey, Kelly Harvey and Tatum Harvey, all of Johnson City, Matthew and Yoon Loutzenhiser, of South Korea; a sister, Galilee Osborne, of Fairfax, Virginia.

A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, August 26, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. in the North Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Rev. Mike Pelham. Special music will be provided by The Harveys.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m.

Evelyn R. Waycaster, 71, 345 Lynn Road, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010, at her residence with her loving family by her side.

She was a lifelong resident of Johnson City and was a daughter of the late David and Ida Grindstaff Carriger. Mrs. Waycaster was retired from Johnson City Medical Center and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Johnson City, where she had been the church pianist since 1961. She loved to sing and listen to gospel music and enjoyed her family trips to Myrtle Beach each year.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford, Norman and Billy Joe Carriger; a sister, Ina Murr; and a son-in-law, Roger Davis.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Howard S. Waycaster; three daughters, Teresa Robbin Clark, Sandra Gail Davis and Donna Kathryn Corbett and her husband, Robert, all of Johnson City; three sisters, Gallie Bailey, Washington, DC, Georgia Kinley and Betty Edwards, both of Jonesborough; two grandsons, Chad Johnson, Dallas, TX, and Steven Bates, Johnson City; two granddaughters, Shelly Davis and Ashley Johnson, Johnson City; six great-grandchildren, Julie, Jackson, Peyton and Levi Carver, Katie and Lindsey Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mrs. Waycaster will be conducted at 7:00 PM Saturday, February 20, 2010, from the Calvary Baptist Church, Hart Avenue, Johnson City, with Pastor James Chatman officiating. Music will be provided by her church family.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 21, 2010, from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. She was a housewife, Mom and Nannie. Mrs. McCoury was a Charter Member of Harvest Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry McCoury; and Five Brothers, Clyde, Junior, Billy, Has and J.G. Deloach.

She retired from the food service industry after 45 years of service and along with her late husband, Renard, were active members of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee. She has been a resident of Salisbury, NC for ten years and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Renard (Ron) Cassar, on December 21, 1976, and by five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her three daughters, Rebecca Terry and her husband, Glenn, of Salisbury, NC, Stella Isenberg and her husband, Roy, of Gray, Tennessee, Sharon Pontius and her husband, Brian, of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Laura and Elmina Deloach, and a brother, Floyd Deloach, all from Elizabethton, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

A native of Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach. Mrs. Pleasant retired as a Nursing Assistant. She was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle Pleasant; one sister; and five brothers. Laura P. Deloach, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Estella Grindstaff Deloach. Laura had lived most of her life in Elizabethton and was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was a beautician and later worked at the Bemberg Corporation for several years. Her last employment was in the cleaning department of Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Anna Mae McCoury, Pauline Gentry, Hazel Pleasant, Mary Cassar and Elmina Deloach, and five brothers, Clyde, Dana, J.G., William and Roscoe Deloach Jr. Survivors include her brother, Floyd "Bobby" Deloach, of the home, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Laura P. Deloach will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 11, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum. Carol June Grindstaff Vance, 77, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Hugh T. and Hazel Caudill Grindstaff.
Carol was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She retired from Shufford Mills in Granite Falls, N.C. She was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Rocky L. Tester; a granddaughter, Terrilynn Lewis; and a brother, Robert Grindstaff.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Diane Peayatte, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Matthew Lewis, Andy Lance Lewis, Stephen Steel Tester and Zoya Starr Tester; four great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Robert Lee Grindstaff II.

Jerry Wayne Grindstaff, age 74, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Saturday morning, April 22, 2017 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was the son of the late Robert Earl Grindstaff and Lora Shouse Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only daughter, Rachel; his brothers, Tex Grindstaff and Joe Shouse; and one nephew, Robert Grindstaff.

Jerry was born in Carter County and graduated from Elizabethton High School. He was a member of Unaka Baptist Church, where he played the bass guitar. He worked at North American Rayon Corporation in the 3rd Unit until it closed. He had also worked in the DD Twisting, American Air Filter and retired from Snap-On Tools after 20 years of service. Most of all, Jerry will be remembered for the loving husband, father, brother and friend he was and will be missed by all that knew him.

ELIZABETHTON - Bobby Gene Grindstaff, 73, Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, September 11, 2017 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Robert Earl & Lora Shouse Grindstaff. He served in the United States Army. Bobby was retired from Snap-On-Tools as an Electronic Technician. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist. He loved to play the Guitar, Banjo, Harmonica, sing in church, and collected old Westerns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Robert Grindstaff, and three brothers: Jerry Grindstaff, Tex Grindstaff and Joe Shouse.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years: Helen Earnhardt Grindstaff. A Son: Michael Keith Browder and wife Angie Greene Browder. Jack Dean Grindstaff, 83, Johnson City passed away Monday, December 10, 2012, in the Franklin Woods Community Hospital.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Wheeler G. and Grace Church Grindstaff. He had lived a number of years in Carter County before moving to Johnson City about 20 years ago.

He was a retired Truck Driver for Inland Container. Mr. Grindstaff was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church, Johnson City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Steven Grindstaff, June 16, 2011; by two brothers: Lowell Grindstaff and his wife, Pauline, and Howard Grindstaff; and a sister and her husband: Pansy & Ed Greer.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years: Geraldine Scalf Grindstaff; A Daughter & Son-in-Law: Jackie & Judge Pippin, Knoxville; A Brother: Doug Grindstaff, Johnson City; Four Grandchildren: Stephen Pippin, Seth Pippin and his wife, Mallery, Jordan Dean Grindstaff and John Goodwin; Several nieces & nephews, includeing two special nieces: Ann Fortner and Sandy.

Ruth Lipford Williams, age 88, Butler, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Pearl Walsh Lipford. Ruth was a graduate of Watauga Academy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Williams, who died April 27, 1987; by a brother and sister-in-law: Buster and Margaret Peters Lipford.

She has one daughter, Sue Carol Ward and son-in-law, Darrell Ward; and one grandchild, Jamie Darrell and wife, Heather Leigh Ward; One great grandchild, Haleigh Jean Ward; Two nieces, Sherry Lynn and husband, Russell Kyte, and their son, David Kyte, his daughter, Taylor; Glenda Pearl and husband, Wayne Treadway, and their son, William Glenn.

She was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, an active member until this past year, working in the WMU, Choir Members, Sunday School Teacher, working in Bible School and always making chicken and dumplings for our meetings. She also sent many cards to the sick.

She was the Best Mom a person could have, and we are so proud of her. She would always say "Let's pray about it."

Archie "Jack" Taylor, age 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Jack was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late General Jackson Taylor and Goldie Taylor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Grindstaff; his second wife, Roma J. Taylor; two grandchildren, Jackson Johnston and Taylor Blevins; his siblings, Willie Taylor Garland, Lena Gregory, Loretta Markland, Lois Jean McClure, Laurie Campbell, Brooks Taylor, Cephus Taylor, Coy Taylor and Sterling Taylor; two half-sisters, Ruth Estep and Chelsea Taylor; and three half-brothers, Roy Taylor, Anderson Taylor and John Taylor.

Jack was a 1957 graduate of Unaka High School and was a member of Moore's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Baxter Pharmaseal after 38 years of service. Jack enjoyed time with family and friends and grandkids, listening to music, country drives, gardening and watching the Braves.

George F. Ritchie, 88, died peacefully at home on October 26, 2018.

He was born December 29, 1929 in Elizabethton, TN, son of Zella Taylor Ritchie and Fredric Payne Ritchie.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Christine Ritchie; and brothers, Sam Ritchie and Hubert Fred Ritchie.

He attended Butler Elementary School and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1947. He put himself through college delivering newspapers for the Elizabethton Star and the Johnson City Press. He graduated from East Tennessee State College with a bachelor's degree in 1951. He also graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1959 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a licensed Land Surveyor in the State of TN. He is a long-standing member of Grace Fellowship Church in Johnson City where he was a member of the Men's Bible Study Class.

He worked as Mechanical Design Engineer for Sperry Corporation, retiring in 1988. Due to his engineering talents, he was selected for many special projects. He designed key components used by NASA for the space program. His designs were on board many space shuttle and rocket launches.

He was an expert mechanic, welder and carpenter. His hobbies were motorcycles, woodworking and photography. He could repair or fix anything. He could take any piece of equipment apart and put it back together in his workshop. His favorite hobby was attending church and studying the bible. He had read the bible many times and could quote many verses. George was a wonderful father to his three daughters and set a good example for many people. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by: daughters, Karen Ritchie, Linda Ritchie and Syndee Cooper; grandchildren Julia and Malachi Cooper; sisters, Hettie Ritchie Beasley and Gene Ritchie Hilton, and cousin Lynn Kay Andrews.

Eugene “Gene” Ross Moreland, 74, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 1, 2021, at home with his family, following an extended illness. He was born on February 7, 1947 to the late Robert “Bob” Henry Moreland and Barbara Kaye White Moreland.
Gene was very loyal and devoted, he always carried a smile and had a friendly word for everyone. He loved both his family and his church family at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church, where he was a very active member of the Men’s Fellowship. He was a member of the Unaka High School Class of 1965 and then attended East Tennessee State University.
Gene had worked for over 30 years with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department and was passionate about his job. He was a true servant to his fellow officers and his community until his death. Gene was a member of Masonic Lodge #238 for over 20 years and in his spare time, Gene enjoyed fishing, traveling and especially spending time with his family.
Those left to continue Gene’s legacy include his wife, Geneva Williams Moreland, of the home; his children, Phil Williams, Debra Holtsclaw, Todd Moreland and Travis Moreland; six grandchildren, Larissa Trivette, Rusty Holtsclaw, Wesley Williams, Chelsea Moreland, Bobbie Moreland and Zoie Moreland; several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Greg Moreland and sister-in-law, Melissa Moreland. Several nieces and nephews, as well as his special friends, Jim and Darlene Hawk, also survive.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Charlie Moreland, age 64, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late G. L. and May Britt Moreland. Mr. Moreland retired from the Elizabethton City Police Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran and he was a member of the Dashiell Masonic Lodge 238 F&AM and the Shriners. As a member of the Shriner's he participated in the Shrine Oriental Band and was involved in their paper sales and the Shriner's circus. Charlie loved being at the lake with friends and spending time with his grandchildren and his fiance' Shirley Sanders.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bertha Moreland, who raised him; an uncle, Robert Moreland and a cousin he considered as a brother, Bobbie Deal. Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Larry Moreland and wife Becky, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Olivia Grace Moreland and Evan Wayne Moreland, both of Elizabethton; a sister, Lois Ann Sanders, Johnson City; his fiance', Shirley Sanders, of the home; the following cousins who he considered as brothers and sisters, Betty D. ELIZABETHTON - Wilma J. Clemons Honeycutt, age 87, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at her residence. Wilma was born in Carter County, a daughter of the late Elbert and Okie Bowers Clemons. In addition to her parents, Wilma was also preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Honeycutt; and a grandson, Jesse Williams.
Wilma retired as a registered nurse and was true lady full of grace and beauty. Wilma was member of Hunter Memorial years ago but was a current long time member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. She loved to sing in the choir and sing at nursing homes- as a member of J.C. and friends. Wilma enjoyed crocheting, reading, word searches and loved laughing and enjoying her family.

KINGSPORT – Steven Preston (Steve) Carriger, 73, passed away on January 23, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Richard and Sylvia Rose Carriger.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Taylor Carriger; his son, Steve (Jessica) Carriger; his daughter, Stephanie (Ryan) Toney; two most precious grandchildren, Henry and Landry Kate Toney; brothers, Phil (Karyn), Larry and David Carriger; 2 nephews and 3 nieces; several cousins and many good friends.

Steve was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church and of the Gate City Masonic Lodge. He loved woodworking and fishing. He taught in Scott County Schools for more than 30 years.

Kenneth Mitchel DeLoach, 66, Elizabethton passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late J.G. & Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. He was a 1966 graduate of Happy Valley High School. Kenneth was retired from Kennametal Inc. Following his retirement he was employed at Chaparral Pontiac-Buick and GMC, Johnson City. Kenneth was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years: Diane Lynn Weese DeLoach, October 2, 2013, a brother: Burlus DeLoach and a niece: Brandy Ann Hicks, a great nephew: Zack Brugh.
Survivors include his Children: Donna DeLoach, Elizabethton, Bryan DeLoach and wife Dawn, Gray and Shanna Roark and fiancé Brad Kirk, Telford. His Grandchildren: Gavin Roark, Gage DeLoach, Lola DeLoach, Harleigh DeLoach and Kendal DeLoach. Two Sisters: Dorothy Cooper and husband Dennis, Athens, Tenn., and Juanita Hicks and husband, David, Johnson City. A Brother: Victor DeLoach & wife Judy, Elizabethton. His Uncle Floyd DeLoach, and Aunts: Laura DeLoach and Elmina DeLoach. JOHNSON CITY - Juanita DeLoach Hicks, age 68, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at her residence. Juanita was born in Carter County to the late JG DeLoach and Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. In addition to her parents, Juanita was also preceded in death by her daughter, Brandy Ann Hicks; her oldest brother, Burlus J. DeLoach and another brother, Kenneth M. DeLoach.
Juanita retired from Kennametal as a machinist and was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Jonson City.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David M. Hicks, of the home; a sister, Dorothy F. Cooper (Dennis) of Athens, TN; a brother, Victor S. DeLoach (Judy) of Elizabethton, TN; a special adopted son, Charlie Norman (Beth) of Elizabethton; and a lifelong friend, Paula “Polly” Jones Grindstaff. ELIZABETHTON - Sherry Lynn Lipford Kyte, age 71, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at her residence.

She was born to Glenn (Buster) Lipford and Margaret Peters Lipford Edens on July 17, 1947, in Johnson County, TN, but lived most of her life in Carter County. She was proceeded in death by her parents, grandparents, Earl and Pearl Lipford of Butler, and Elijah and Ellen Eggers Peters of Elizabethton and two aunts, Ruth Lipford Williams and Mildred Peters Hart.

Sherry was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, Class of 1965. She worked at Sears for eight and one-half years and retired from Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank after thirty-nine and one-half years.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-three years, James Russell Kyte; a devoted son, David Glen Kyte, Elizabethton, TN; her favorite granddaughter, Taylor Jules Kyte, Charlotte, NC; one sister, Glenda (Wayne) Treadway, Dandridge, TN; one nephew, William Glenn Treadway, Murray, KY; cousin/sister, Sue Carol (Darrell) Ward, Butler, TN and many cousins.

Sherry was also blessed with a large family of Kyte-in-laws, whom she loved dearly; special friends, Sherry Maines and Ginny McGee; her Sims Hill Christian Church family; members of The Followers Sunday School Class and special Elizabethton Federal Bank family.

Special caregivers to Sherry were Teresa Phipps, Linda Henry, Shoddie Kyte, Sherry Maines, Ginny McGee, Debbie Reeser, Sue Carol Ward and Glenda Treadway.

Sherry was an active member of Sims Hill Christian Church where she served on several committees including the Youth Committee. She taught children to love Jesus for over fifty years. Being a witness for Jesus was her passion and her faith in Jesus never wavered. She was a strength to all and set an awesome example to her family and friends on how to live for Jesus and love others on a daily basis.

A service to honor the life of Sherry Lynn Lipford Kyte will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 6, 2018 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Bret Jones, minister officiating. Music will be under the direction of Lisa Carter. The family will receive friends at the funeral from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 7, 2018 in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Warren D. "Sput" Taylor, age 58, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, April 10, 2015, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Elizabethton, he was the son of Fannie Timbs Taylor, Elizabethton, and the late Warren G. Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a quality control compliance technician with Bristol Metals. He was a member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church, a member of the Watauga Association of Genealogy and a member of the American Society of Quality Control (A.S.Q.C.).
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Lisa Taylor, of the home; two daughters, Brittney Grabiel and husband, Chris, Gallatin, TN, and Jennifer Arnold and husband, Mike, Gray, TN; two granddaughters, Taylor Grabiel and Addison Arnold; a grandson, Silas Grabiel; and a sister, Mary Grindstaff, Elizabethton. Several brothersinlaw, sistersinlaw, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
Sput and Lisa were married for 37 years. Sput was saved and baptized in 1979. He had a passion for life, a winning smile, and was always quick to lend a helping hand to others.
A service to honor the life of Mr. Warren D. "Sput" Taylor will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, April 13, 2015, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. David Foster officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:007:00 P.M. on Monday prior to the service or at the residence at any time. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M.
