BUTLER - Ted R. Matherly, 86, Butler, passed away Saturday October 28, 2017 at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late James Blaine & Winnie Loretta Wagner Matherly. Ted served in the United States Air Force. He attended Watauga Academy and graduate from Johnson County High School. He also attended the University of Tennessee. He retired as Postmaster from the Butler Post Office after 27 years of service. Ted was a member of Roan Creek Masonic Lodge # 679, was one of the original members of the Butler Fire Department, a charter member of the Butler Puritan Club and was a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Raquel Patria (Pat) Ramon Matherly who died May 11, 2005 and by three sisters and three brothers. Ted loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also an Atlanta Brave Fan.

Survivors include Two Daughters: Teresa Burchfield & husband Bob, Covington, Georgia and Amy Ogle & husband Darrell, Rutledge, Tennessee. One Son: Steven Matherly and wife Michele, Butler. Six Grandchildren, Seven Great Grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Street officiating. Private Interment will be Tuesday in Butler Memorial Cemetery.

Wayne Wagner Morley is at peace in heaven after living a long life serving his country and caring for his family and his fellow man.

Wayne was born in Neeva, TN on August 18, 1926 and lived in Butler, TN until he was drafted into the Army in 1944. After serving time in the Army, Wayne elected to join the Navy in 1948.

He married his "Darling" Georgie Mae Potter on October 22nd, 1948, and they were married happily for 68 years. During their lives together they made their home in all four corners of the country, living for a time in Rhode Island, Maine, Florida, Washington, California, Virginia, and returned to Tennessee where he lived from 1971 until the day of his death, July 31st, 2017.

Wayne instilled a love of living in his children and grandchildren, grounded in his belief that there was little reason to worry when God was in control. He loved nature and whether he was camping with his family, riding motorcycles around the mountains, or just sitting outside listening to the birds, he was at peace enjoying the beauty around him.

Wayne loved his family. He was the proud father of two children, four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He is survived by Larry (and his wife Dawn) and Karen (and her husband, Mike); four grandchildren, Lisa, Dana (and her fiancé Robert), Dustin (and his wife, Crystal), and Robert (and his wife, Fran); and proud great-grandfather to Makenzie, Ashley, Sophia, Trinity, Aaron, Seth, and Liam. Nothing made him smile easier than the smiles of his children. He is also survived by his loving younger sister, Pearl Matherly, and his wife, Georgie, who remained in his thoughts until his last days on this earth.

Wayne will always be remembered as a kind, caring, honest and thoughtful man who loved to smile, laugh, and tell stories. He never met a stranger, he loved talking to everyone he met and couldn't be pulled away from a lively conversation. He enjoyed whittling and his woodworking kept him quite busy for years. Strangers and family alike can attest to the presence of letter openers, birds and walking sticks that Wayne gifted to them over the years.

As a family, we will miss his smile, his laugh, and his company. We were blessed to have him in our lives as long as we did.

Services will be held at the VA in Johnson City, TN on Tuesday, August 8th beginning promptly at 10:00 am.

He was the son of the late Hill and Pearl Wagner Blackburn and was born in Johnson County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixth-three years, Dora Grindstaff Blackburn; a brother and two sisters.

Mr. Blackburn was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the Hampton First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He loved to sing and direct music at the church.

He is survived by two sons, Basil Blackburn and his wife, Phyllis of Johnson City; Albert Blackburn and his wife, Tammy, Marion, VA; a daughter, Darlene Taylor and her husband, Carl, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Brian Blackburn, Chad Blackburn, Bonnie Buckles, Jenny Taylor; three step-grandchildren, Tiffany Little, Trevor Mensch and Taryn Mensch; two great-grandchildren, Brianna Blackburn and Allison Blackburn; two brothers, Stuart Blackburn, Elizabethton; Elmer Blackburn, Butler; two sisters, Mary Depew, Johnson City; Anna Ruth Moreland, Butler. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Blackburn will be conducted on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at 5:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Mike Hyder officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday prior to the service, or at the homes of any of the family at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

KNOXVILLE - Mary B. Depew, age 93, of Knoxville, TN, passed away peacefully Wednesday , November 14, 2018 at Park West Medical Center.

She was a Butler, TN, native, a charter member of the Midway Baptist Church, and the daughter of the late O. H. and Pearl Wagner Blackburn. Before moving to Knoxville, she resided in Johnson City for 51 years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, John, as well as three brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. DePew was formerly employed by American Rayon Corporation. She is best remembered for the way she loved and nurtured family and friends in a home whose doors were always open. She was a devout Christian and truly loved the Lord.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her son Gary Lynn Depew (Sue) of Knoxville, TN; brother Stuart Blackburn of Valley Forge; sister Anna Ruth Moorefield of Butler; granddaughters Jennifer McGrath (Dave) of Lexington, KY; Leslie Blair (Curtis) of Chattanooga, TN and Peyton Pearman (Paul) of Chattanooga, TN: and great-grandchildren Leo McGrath, Holly and Hudson and Cooper Blair and Jackson and Belle Pearman.

The service for Mrs. Depew will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2018 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with her nephew, Chuck Moorefield, officiating. Interment and graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers & honorary Pallbearers will be close family & friends.

Stuart L. “Haney” Blackburn, age 92, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, June 11, 2021, at Hillview Health Center. A native of Johnson County, TN, He is the son of the late Orin Hill Blackburn and Pearl Wagner Blackburn. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church and the choir director for many years. He served in the Korean War for the U.S. Army and worked for Magnavox, NARC and later retired from a lawnmower business. “Haney” enjoyed working on lawnmowers, attending church and leading the choir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Chloe (Frank) Jewett, Marie (Sam) Dugger and Mary Odell (Jay) Depew; three brothers, Paul Blackburn, Fred (Dora) Blackburn and Elmer (Virginia) Blackburn and daughter, Lori Tester. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Agnes M. Blackburn; two sons, Carroll (Janet) Glover and Orin (Carol) Blackburn; four daughters, Janette (Tony) West, Anna M. A funeral service to honor the life of Stuart “Haney” Blackburn will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Mr. Caleb King officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir. The family will receive friends between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. prior to the service on Sunday.

The graveside service and committal will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Mountain Home National Cemetery (New Annex) 215 Heroes Drive, Mountain Home, TN 37684. ELIZABETHTON - Roger Dale Pierce, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center, after a short illness with his family by his side. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Ellis & Goldie Blackwell Pierce. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. Roger served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. Roger worked as a welder and millwright and retired from Daniels Construction at Eastman. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a generous, gifted and loving brother and friend. He was a wonderful husband always aspiring to care for Debbie. Roger was a member of First Christian Church and was a devoted student of the word of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws: Mary and Eugene Bowers.

Survivors include his wife: Debbie Bowers Pierce, His Brothers: Terry (Barbara) Pierce and Bruce (Mary) Pierce. The family would like to thank those at Franklin-Woods and the Johnson City Medical Center for the care Roger received.

It was Roger’s request that there be no services.

Etta Mae (Tootsie) Roberts, age 80, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022 at her residence. She was born on September 19, 1941 to the late Guy Arney and Anna Mae Matherly Arney. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Roberts, and her sister, Loretta Garver.

Tootsie loved flowers, gardening, and cooking. She was a wonderful mother, cook, and enjoyed taking care of everyone. She also enjoyed music and played the piano and sang for her church.

She was a member of Doe Valley Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Elisha Milam and Toni Rollins (Jim); son, Jason Roberts (Emily); stepchildren, Melody (Todd), Tim (Robin), Mark (Vicky), and Sheila; brother, Russell Arney (Carolyn); grandchildren, Rhenda Kelly (Tyson), Cristy Clark Taylor (Eddie), Jamie Roberts (Dawn), Jarrett Roberts, Jodi, and Gracie; great-grandchildren, Landon, Elliot, Makenzie, Dylan, Kolby, Brayden, Faith, Hope, Dawson, Blade, and Gage; brother-in-law, Phillip Garver; special friends, Lois, Nancy and Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.

BUTLER - Loretta Kay Arney Garver, 72, Butler passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Guy & Anna Mae Matherly Arney. Loretta was a 1962 graduate of Johnson County High School. She was an active member of Little Doe Baptist Church. She was a member of the Church Choir, Sunday School Teacher, active in the WMU and children church.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years: Phillip Garver. Two Children: Darwinn Garver & wife, Melissa, Butler and Sherry Stevens and husband Danny, Piney Flats. Ten Grand Children: Sarah Garver, Megan Meade, Kaylin Hayworth, Bailey Epperly, Julia Stevens, Mason Hayworth, Luke Hayworth, Harley Wykle, Evan Hayworth and Grey Stevens. JOHNSON CITY - Basil Lyle Blackburn, age 76, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord at his home on Thursday, June 8, 2023 surrounded by his beloved family. Basil was born in Elizabethton and raised in Johnson County and Hampton, to the late Fred Blackburn and Dora Rita (Grindstaff) Blackburn. In addition to his parents, Basil was also preceded in death by his great grandson, “Little Man”- Richard Killian Owens; several aunts and uncles; his mother-in-law, Myrtle Moody; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Hicks.

Basil was a mechanic by trade and could fix anything! He never gave up on trying or doing anything he put his mind too but most of all he loved and cherished his family. Basil had excelled at many things and had a wonderful, hard-working heart of gold. He had owned and operated a Roadrunner Express Delivery Service, Mr. B’s Service Center and Aunt B’s Restaurant. To say he was talented would be a tremendous understatement.

Basil attended Pinecrest Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. He attended church religiously until his health prevented it. He had also worked with the youth of the church in past years, including youth trips and outings. Basil loved all animals, but especially his dog, Reese. A family man at heart, Basil treasured his trips with his family to the beach, riding motorcycles and children of all ages that were drawn to Basil because of his kind, loving heart.

Those left to remember and cherish Basil’s memories include his loving wife, Phyllis Blackburn; two sons, Brian Blackburn and Chad (Mandy) Blackburn; his granddaughters, Brianna Owens and Allison (Hunter) Hampton; his brother, Albert (Tammy) Blackburn and his sister, Darlene (Carl) Taylor and family; his sister-in-law, Pat Moody Hicks; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members also survive as well as his special cousins, Kenny Grindstaff and Charlie Grindstaff, special niece, Sherry Tilson, special family friend, Shirley Butler and many, many friends that will miss him so very much, too many to list, but they know they were loved.

A service to celebrate the life of Basil Lyle Blackburn will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Mr. Garry Edwards officiating. Emory Cordell will also speak at the service. Music will be under the direction of Larry Pate. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Tuesday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at Roselawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Kenny Grindstaff, Dennis Bailey, Herman Wyatt, Hunter Hampton, Hobie Hyder, Kenneth Harrison, David Hicks, Clay McNabb, and Steve Tilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Keller, David Vaught, Emory Cordell, Bob Richards, Larry Pate, Buster Hodge, Ronnie Reeser and Charlie Grindstaff.

HAMPTON - Gregory Banner, 61, Hampton, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was born April 8, 1961. He was formerly employed by Tennessee Valley Cable. He loved to play the Guitar and play horseshoe. In earlier years he attended Union Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father Clyde Banner , a sister: Wanda Banner, a niece: Terra Blevins, his grandparents: Essie & Arthur Banner and Lawton & Della Hodge and his aunt: Helena Feathers.

Survivors include his daughter: Linda (Robert) Clawson, Mother: Geraldine Banner, a granddaughter: Rachel Nelson, a great grandson: Carter Eller, a sister: Jamie Blevins and a niece: Kelly Reed.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. David Montgomery officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
