    PROMINENT FARMER HERE SHOOTS SELF
LUTHER BOWERS, Ninth District Commits Suicide Near Home This Morning.
Luther A. Bowers, 35, a prominent farmer of the ninth district, in the Blue Springs section of Carter county shot and instantly killed himself with a single barreled 12-gauge shot-gun at ten o'clock this morning, according to a decision received at noon of a coroner's jury under the charge of County Coroner Robert T. Johnson, Jr.
A single shot wound in Bowers' neck was said to be the cause of his death, and indications showed that it was self-inflicted. The shooting occurred in a roadway about a hundred yards from his home.
According to a statement of his wife, Bowers mentioned to members of his family that he believed that a fox was among his chickens, taking his gun and accompanied by his ten-year-old son, he went about a hundred yards up the road that ran by the farmhouse, and asked the boy to go into the bushes to look for the fox. It was while the boy was away that the shot was heard.
"I became alarmed as soon as I heard the shot, and felt that Luther had killed himself," said Mrs. Bowers. "He has been in ill health for a number of months, and recently has not acted as if he were in his right mind."
The son was said to have rushed back to his father when he heard the report of the gun, but Bowers was dead before the boy could reach him although only having to cover a distance of about thirty yards.
An imprint was found in the road seemingly made from the stock of the gun being placed upon the ground, Coroner Johnson said, and there were powder burns on his left hand. Members of the family who were nearby said that the report of the gun sounded as if it was muffled, or that the end of the barrel had been placed against some object.
Neighbors stated to the jury that Bowers had been acting queer for a number of days, that he would seldom talk to any one, and appeared as if some depressing matter was on his mind.
Bowers was a prominent and well-known farmer of his community, and was a descendant of an old Carter county family. He has scores of acquaintances throughout the county.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. The body was brought to a local undertaking establishment to be prepared for burial.
Bowers is survived by his widow and eight small children.

  44. 140.  Charlotte Sue Nidiffer Descendancy chart to this point (94.Living4, 42.Jennie3, 11.Hester2, 1.David1) was born on 31 Aug 1946 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 11 Feb 2020 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Charlotte Holden, loving mother, sister, and nurse, passed away at the age of 73 due to complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
Born Charlotte Sue Nidiffer in Elizabethton, Tenn., on August 31, 1946, she graduated from Elizabethton High School and later obtained her LPN license. Charlotte married James Edward Peters of Carter County in 1967 and had one child, Michelle Lynne, who now resides in Burlington, Iowa. They later divorced and she would be married again to George Kenneth Holden of Johnson City. Charlotte and Ken divorced after 17 years and Charlotte would remain single until her death.
Ms. Holden served as an LPN for 46 years, having begun her Tennessee career in the ER of Carter County Memorial Hospital and ending it at NHC Healthcare in Johnson City. While employed at Carter County Memorial Hospital, she caused some controversy by being the first nurse to ever wear pants — an event that received publicity in the Elizabethton Star. At NHC, Charlotte was named Nurse of the Year. She was most proud of this award because she was honored by her peers. During her career, she also taught CNAs at Herman Robinson Technical School.
Charlotte would later move to Libertyville, Iowa where she would touch more lives while working at Jefferson County Health Center and Parkview Care Center, both in Fairfield, Iowa.
She would return to Tennessee and live with her sister. They shared the same birthday only two years apart and loved each other as deeply as two sisters could. Many would tease them and say they seemed like an “old married couple.”
Charlotte’s two priorities were her daughter and caring for others. She enjoyed vacationing at the beach, gardening, and spending time with her family. She spent a great deal of time listening to music, reading, surfing the web, and keeping up with local, state, and national news events. She was quick to give a smile or laugh and loved conversation. For most of her life, she was “up for just about anything” and was truly the happiest when in the company of others. She loved animals and adored her grand dogs and they her.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her mother and father (Margaret and Tennie Nidiffer), two brothers (Bobby and Larry Nidiffer), and a sister (Francis “Suzie” Hartley).
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Shannon) Stump of Iowa, one brother, Tennie Nidiffer Jr. of Elizabethton, two sisters, Betty (Rex) Simerly of Elizabethton and Kathryn Norris of Johnson City, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Charlotte wished for memorials to be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Attn: Donations, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105) or The Humane Society of Washington County (2101 W. Walnut, Johnson City, TN 37604).
Charlotte wished to be cremated and will be entombed in the Mausoleum of Faith at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton.

Ruth spent her younger years growing up in Siam until her teens when the family moved to Johnson City. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and went on to complete her LPN and RN, and BSN at East Tennessee State University. Ruth or "Ruth Ann" started out her career as a Candy Striper and then as an LPN at the old Johnson City Memorial Hospital. Throughout her career she taught nursing and was the Assistant Director of Nursing at The Christian Village. She worked for many years as a Psyche Nurse, starting at Watauga Mental Health and then Woodridge. She would later move to help start the Psyche Unit at Northside Hospital in Johnson City where she retired.
Ruth loved to play cards, travel and shop. In her later years she had two special pets, Cocoa and then Roxie. We have no doubt they were waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge. She was a gifted singer and song writer bringing much comfort and joy to others. She freely sang for friends, family, and church congregations. Her original songs were angelic and provided her some peace as well as others who were fortunate enough to hear them.
