    MOUNTAIN CITY – Gatha Arnold, age 87, of Swift Hollow Road , Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

    Gatha was born on May 7, 1919, in Johnson County to the late J.B. and Lizzie Swift Arnold. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WW II and was a member of the Church of Christ.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Hubbard; and four brothers, Clarence, Joseph, Boyd and Spencer Arnold.

    Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Laura Swift Arnold; his son, Paul Arnold and wife, Wanda, of Mountain City; his sister, Betty Collins, of Stoney Creek; his brother, John Arnold and wife, Karen, of Mountain City; and several nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2006, at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Virgil Cretsinger, Minister, and Herman Trivette, Minister, officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 25th, at Wilson Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

    Gatha married Laura Alice Swift on 17 Dec 1938 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee.     Lillian Pearl Hubbard, 82, 1105 Highway 91, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at her residence.

    Mrs. Hubbard was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late James and Lizzie Swift Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Boyd Arnold, Spencer Arnold and Joe Arnold.

    Mrs. Hubbard was retired from Bemburg and North American Rayon Corporation. She was a member of East River Park Christian Church.

    Survivors include her husband, Walter Sherman Hubbard, of the home; a sister, Betty Collins, Elizabethton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Karen Arnold and Gatha and Laura Arnold, all of Mountain City; stepchildren and spouses, Michael and Sue Hubbard, Johnson City, Eugene and Patsy Hubbard and Lester Lee and Terry Hubbard, all of Elizabethton, and Mary Katherine and Jim Mason, Mountain Home, Ark.; special grandson, Joshua Howard Hubbard, Elizabethton; and special niece, Mary Short, Elizabethton. Six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Mrs. Hubbard will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. John Smith, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of John and Mary Smith. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service in the chapel, or friends may call at the residence at anytime. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Benny Lyons, Robert Stines, Jim Whitehead, Mike Hubbard, Ken Arnold, James Arnold, Gene Hubbard and Bernie Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Carter County Rescue Squad. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to travel in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the nurses of Housecall Hospice and Adventa Hospice. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Rescue Squad, P.O.     Betty Jean Arnold Campbell Collins, 85, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. Betty was born in Johnson County, Tenn., to the late James and Lizzie Swift Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Kenneth Campbell; her second husband, Oliver "Shorty" Collins; two daughters, Della Arnold and Ann Watson; one son, Lee Campbell; one sister; and four brothers.
    Betty retired as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
    Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Mary Short and Lynn Ballard, both of Elizabethton; one son, Robert Campbell, of Crestview, Fla.; one brother, John Arnold, of Mountain City; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    A service to honor the life of Mrs. Betty Jean Arnold Campbell Collins will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. John H. Smith, minister, officiating. Music will be provided by Jennifer Hill. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the residence of her daughter, Mary Short, at anytime. A private disposition will be held at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Amedisys Home Health and the staff of Hermitage Health Center.

Church Sr., age 82, of 1710 Swift Hollow Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at his residence following a lengthy illness. A native of Johnson County, he was born March 26, 1922, to the late James and Arrie Swift Church. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by two sons, David A. Church Jr. and Dennis M. Church. He was married a number of years to the late Lois S. Church. He was a farmer and had also retired from Burlington Industries. David was a member, for a number of years, of the Johnson County Rescue Squad. He loved to watch wildlife and get together with his family and friends. He was a member of Dewey Church of Christ. David was an Army Veteran, having served in World War II. David is survived by two sons, Bob Church and wife, Helen, of Nashville, Tennessee, and John Church, of Mountain City, Tennessee; five sisters, Marjorie Church, Stella Smiley, Eva June Hedge, Lois Gurney, all of Mountain City, Tennessee, and Della Mae Magnus, of Saskatchewan, Canada; three grandchildren, Michelle Bassett, David Church, both of California, and Chris Church, of Nashville, Tennessee. Several nieces, nephews and a number of friends in the Doe Valley Community also survive. Funeral Services for David will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2004, from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Henson to officiate.

    MOUNTAIN CITY — Marjorie Church, age 79, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at her residence.

    She was born in Johnson County, Tennessee on December 13, 1930, to the late James Calvin and Arrie Swift Church. In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by two sisters: Anna Pearl Miller and June Hedger; and two brothers: David Church and Claude Church.

    Marjorie volunteered at Children's Bible Ministries for several years. She was a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia, and attended First Baptist Church of Mountain City. She loved her Lord and was a faithful servant to Him.

    Marjorie is survived by sisters: Lois Gurney Long and husband, H Long, Stella Smiley, all of Mountain City, Tennessee, and Della Mae Magnus and husband, Ervin, of Saskatchewan, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

    The funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2010, from the Mountain City Funeral Home with Pastor Ricky Campbell and Dave Johnson (Director of CBM Camp) to officiate. Music will be under the direction of Pastor Ricky Campbell, Mr. Ralph Howard and Mr. Allen Mitchell.

    Private interment will be in Wilson Cemetery.

    A very special thank you to Marjorie's niece, Mary Jane Clay and to Sue Welch and to all of Marjorie's family, friends and neighbors for all of their loving care.

    Stella Rhea Smiley, age 87, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at her home at Governor’s Bend in Erwin, TN.

    She was born in Johnson County, TN on November 23, 1932 to the late James Calvin and Arrie Swift Church. In addition to her parents, Stella was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Smiley; twin sister, Nella Faye; other sisters, Marjorie Church, Anna Pearl Miller, June Hedger; brothers, David Church and Claude Church.

    Stella’s main goal in life was to take as many souls to heaven with her as she could. Along with being a servant to God, she loved to travel. During her many travels, she had the opportunity to visit the Holy Lands twice. Also, in her endeavor to spread the gospel she loved to teach Sunday school, which she did for 26 years, sing in the choir, and play the hand bells. As her memory began to fail her, she had a hard time remembering names so she began to call all women Miss America to make them feel good.

    Stella was an auxiliary member of the American Legion and VFW. She was also a devoted member of First Baptist Church and served as chaplain of the local branch of Gideons International Auxiliary. She always carried extra copies of the Gideon’s New Testament to enable herself to witness to others.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her sisters, Lois Long and Della Mae Magnus; special friends, Buster and Peggy Brown, Sherry Orcutt, Ruth Brown; special niece, Mary Jane Clay, and her beloved dog, Dixie.

    Stella and her two sisters were some of the first campers of CBM Ministries in Tennessee. Stella graduated from Southern Bible College and continued to be instrumental in the continuation of CBM ministries.

    The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at First Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. A graveside service and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020 at Wilson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Terry Jordan, Jerry Jordan, Danny Cullop, Eric Cullop, Joseph Tipton, and Buster Brown. She was born March 27, 1937, in Elizabethton, TN, to the late Lloyd Parker and Vergie Morefield Parker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred S. Wood. She was also preceded by two brothers, Dallas Parker and Lloyd Parker Jr. She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She loved cooking, gardening, spending time with her family, and playing Canasta. She was a 1955 graduate of Johnson County High School.

    Survivors include two daughters, Karen Snyder (Larry) of Glen Allen, VA, and Lisa Haynes (Doug) of Mountain City. Two sons, Kenneth Wood (Marie) of Hudson, NC, and Dwayne Wood (Rachel) of Lenoir, NC.     Lloyd Monroe Parker, age 84, of Marion, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017. He was born on November 12, 1932 to the late Monroe and Virgie Morefield Parker.
    In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann Younce Parker and a daughter, Tracy Ann Parker.

    Lloyd was a faithful Dad, Papaw and Great Papaw Parker. He was his family's biggest fan, always there at sporting events cheering them on. He had a special love for all of his family and was always telling people he was where he loved to be - with all of his family.

    Lloyd worked various jobs throughout his lifetime including the old Burlington plant. When he wasn't working his 'regular' job, Lloyd enjoyed working on lawn mowers.

    He had a special companion whom he loved very much, Lucky the cat, who was always by his side until his death last year.
    He was a member of Roan Creek Baptist Church.

    Funeral services were held Thursday at the Hill Chapel for little six-year-old David Arnold of Route 1, Mountain City, who died at General Hospital after being admitted on November 14 with a definite diagnosis of polio.
    The little boy was rushed from Johnson City, led by special highway patrol all the way to Knoxville by the Johnson City Emergency and Life Saving Squad. He died a short time after admission.
    Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Arnold; two sisters, Sophia Elizabethton and Viola Gray; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Arnold; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Turnmire.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Gray Taylor, and a brother, David Arnold.
    Mary was kind-hearted, loving and caring to everyone around her. She loved everyone and through her love and kindness, made many, many special friends. Many people knew Mary from her work at the Dollar General Store, where she met each customer with a warm smile. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary enjoyed traveling and visiting places. She especially loved going to the beach and yard sales. She loved living in the mountains and really enjoyed the winter snow, Christmas time and Santa Claus. She was a member of Beta Theta.
    Mary was a member of Dyson Grove Baptist Church. She loved her church, church family and enjoyed hearing the church choir sing.
    Those left to cherish her memories include her loving husband of 48 years, Earl M. Fritts; daughters, Sherry Fritts, Melissa Fritts and Tammy Laws and husband Daniel Laws; sister, Sophia Rich; grandchildren, Elizabeth Fritts and Andrea Couch; great-grandchildren, Kyle Gattis, Connor Gattis and Arabella Couch; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
    The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 12, at Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. He was also preceded in death by a brother Dennis Chuch. Jerry was a graduate of Johnson County High School and worked as a correctional officer at the North East Correctional Center. Jerry was also a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the U. S. Marines and attended Bethany Baptist Church. He loved collecting pipes, collecting coins and going metal detecting. Surviving are his father, David Allen Church, Sr. of Mountain City; two brothers: Bob Church and wife Helen of Nashville, TN and John Church of Dallas, TX; two nephews: David and Chris and a niece, Michelle. Funeral services for Jerry will be held at 1 p. m. Monday from Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Henson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery following the services. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p. m. Sunday from the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his father, at 1710 Swift Hollow Road, Mountain City.
