    DEATH TAKES RUTH BOWERS, 65, AT HUNTER
    Miss Ruthie Bowers, aged 65, died at her home at Hunter Sunday morning.
    Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the home at two o'clock, and will be conducted by the Rev. E. E. Hazelwood. Burial will be in Academy Cemetery at Hunter.
    Miss Bowers is survived by two sisters, Josie Bowers and Mrs. Mollie Oliver; and two brothers, David and Daniel Bowers.

Funeral services will be held from the Baptist church at Watauga Valley Sunday morning at 11:00 o'clock. Rev. D. R. Kilgore and Rev. E. J. Bramlett will officiate. Burial in the Wilson Cemetery.

    Funeral services for Lena B. Presley, 85, were conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home.

    Graveside services and interment were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2002 at Caldwell Springs Cemetery.

    Sophia Oliver Hardin, 80, of Atlanta, GA.; formerly of Elizabethton, TN, died Tuesday in the Georgia Baptist Hospital, Atlanta, following an extended illness.
    A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Emma Oliver. Mrs. Hardin was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church and a retired employee of Bemburg Corporation. She was preceded in death by a son, William Clay Hardin Jr.
    Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Oliver Hardin, 80, of Atlanta, GA., formerly of Elizabethton, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    Survivors include three sons, Robert Guy Oliver, Johnson City, Paul Oliver and Terry L. Oliver, both of Elizabethton; one daughter, Geraldine Staggs, Portland, Oregon and one brother, Earl Oliver, Elizabethton. Twelve grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Music will be under the of Sharon Oliver, soloist and Ona Fay Oliver, Organist. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wilson Cemetery.     Mr. Gentry retired from Baxter after thirty years of service. He was a member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Charles, Ray and Floyd Gentry; and a sister, Eureka Gentry.

    Randy was a very special and gifted person. He was known as "Red Man" to everyone who knew him. He loved going to concerts and rock music. He especially loved Hank Williams Jr.
    We would like to thank his doctor, Kimberly Kleine (who was very special to him), his therapist, Gordon, his home health nurses and his Social Workers. We can't thank these people enough for everything they did for Randy; they made a big difference in his life in just the last few months. Randy will be terribly missed by all of us. Randy chose to give his body to research to help other people.

    Joan was born on November 11, 1934 to the late Clay Hardin Sr. and Sophia Oliver Hardin.
    Joan previously owned and operated the historic Lincoln Cemetery and Monte Vista Biblical Gardens in Atlanta, GA. She later branched out to Decatur and owned and operated Washington Memorial Gardens and Dawn Memorial Park.
    She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was a graduate from East Tennessee State University.
    She was a past president of the Georgia Cemetery Association, Southern Cemetery Association. Joan was the 1st woman to be the president of both the Southern Cemetery Association and Georgia Cemetery Association. She was a member of the League of Women Voters. She was also the first female board member of the prestigious Ravinia club and was the first female member for several significant community organizations.
    She was a trailblazer for many women's association groups and women's rights. She served as the president of the Women's Prestigious Association of Atlanta, Ga. Joan is in the Hall of Fame for the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta. She was awarded The Outstanding Community Service Award from The Concerned Black Clergy of Metro Atlanta. The Lincoln Family Group was present at the outstanding annual gala and was nominated for this prestigious award by the Reverend Dr. H. Jeremiah Bridgewater Jr.
    She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Clay Hardin Jr.
    Ms. Sawyer is survived by her son, Jack Frost, II of Atlanta, Ga, and her grandchildren, Shayda Frost of Los Angeles, California, and Parisa Frost of Los
    Angeles, California, great nephew Sergio Montescelis of Newnan, Georgia and a host of their family members and friends.

Robert was born in Carter County to the late Claude Grindstaff and Grace Oliver. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Oliver Staggs and Faye Oliver Moore.
    Robert had been employed as a general laborer and was of the Baptist faith. He was a very caring person who would help anyone whenever he could. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
    Those left to cherish Robert’s memory include two brothers, Paul Oliver and Terry Oliver and wife Sharon, all of Elizabethton; his close friends, Norma Bennett and Bynum Whitehead; and several nieces, nephew and friends also survive.

    Nyoka Shelburne, 80, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at her home. Nyoka was born in Elizabethton to the late Earl Albert Oliver and Mary Lee (Wright) Folsom. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Silas Shelburne; her daughter, whom she missed terribly, Kathy Jo Shelburne; a sister, Joann (Tom) Vinson; a brother, Warren Oliver; two nephews, Mike Pierce and Richard Shelburne; two sisters-in-law, Freida Oliver and Carol (Bobby) Smith; and a brother-in-law, Bill Shelburne. Nyoka was a wonderful lady and very intelligent. She had been employed within the Senate as an administrative assistant and was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. Nyoka loved sun-tanning and being by the pool. She also enjoyed playing poker, playing cards with her granddaughter, and reading. Nyoka leaves behind a legacy of beauty and faith and a love for all that were blessed to know her. Those left to remember and cherish Nyoka’s many precious memories include her daughter, Debbie Mariano of Elizabethton; her granddaughter, Jessie Shaffer of Harrisburg, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Juleyan and Madelyn Shaffer; her sister, Loretta (Dean) Pierce of Elizabethton; three brothers, Albert (Patty) Oliver, Richard (Phyllis) Oliver and Charles Oliver, all of Elizabethton; and five “surrogate” daughters, Carla, Lisa, Cindy, Gina and Bobbie. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and neighbors also survive. A service to celebrate Nyoka’s life will be conducted at noon on Saturday, February 4, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Pastor Mark Fowler officiating.     KNOXVILLE — Deborah Ann Greathouse went home peacefully with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 23, 2022 after a courageous battle with terminal inflammatory breast cancer. She was lovingly surrounded by her daughter Jennifer and the incredible University of Tennessee Hospice Care team who diligently and tirelessly cared for her through the duration of the last months of her illness.
    Deborah was born October 7, 1954, and raised as a youngster in Elizabethton, Tenn., and later resided in Atlanta, Ga., San Francisco, Calif., and in Hawaii for much of her adult life. Deborah lived a full and inspirational life. She was a gift to those in need and a compassionate woman who gave tirelessly to others during her own, private lifelong struggle with Crohn’s disease. Deborah went on to earn her B.A. from San Francisco State University and began a career spanning decades. The highlights of her career include working and traveling for McGraw Hill Publishing Company as an executive until her retirement. Her career also included working for a west coast extension of NASA at the Geosat Corporation in San Francisco and she later became a community outreach executive at the ALS Lou Gehrig’s Foundation of San Francisco. She shared her passion tirelessly in caring for and assisting ALS patients and their families. She published caregiving guides and resource manuals for families of ALS and was a strong advocate for community outreach on behalf of the foundation.
    Deborah shared her passion for learning and education in her retired years by working as a substitute teacher for her native Tennessee communities where she inspired students with examples of her art and her worldly European and West Coast travels. Deborah was an avid artist and a photographer. Her paintings have been donated and displayed to community centers, churches, and to the many local communities in which she lived. As a photographer, she enjoyed the processing of original dark room film photography and taking pictures of the many landscapes and people she encountered in her travels. Most of all, Deborah was so proud of her loving granddaughter Lauren.
    Deborah is survived by her loving daughter Jennifer Blatchley, her granddaughter Lauren Blatchley, her close cousins, Jill DelValle and Jack Frost Jr., and by many cousins, relatives, and friends. Deborah’s family were direct descendants of John Oliver, founder of Cade’s Cove Tennessee.
    She was preceded in death by her most loving grandparents, Robert and Alice Markland, and by Sophia and William Clay Hardin Sr., along with her parents, William Clay Hardin Jr. and Loretta Jean Davis of Elizabethton, Tenn. She is also recently preceded in death by her aunt, Joan Hardin Sawyer of Atlanta, Ga.
    Deborah would like to give a very special thanks to the UT Hospice Care team members including Dr. Cynthia Pearman, charge nurse Crystal Welborne, Nurse Practitioner Jordan Massey, nurse Amanda Mayes, nurse Patrick Moore, and care staff Jane Carter. They worked tirelessly to provide comfort and medical care and they went above and beyond the call of duty. Deborah’s daughter Jennifer would like to especially thank Dr. Cynthia Pearman, who gave the precious gift of time with her mother. Deborah also wants to thank Dr. DeVore and Dr. Shoemaker of the Tennessee Cancer Specialist Center. Special thanks to her dedicated local friends Vishal Sharma and wife Parul Kaushal and neighbor Fadia Alvie for all the love made in every dish of homemade soups with assistance in logistics of helping her maintain a peaceful home environment. Special thanks to Bob Gervasio for the lifelong love shown to her. Special thanks to Donna Hopwood and her staff at 24/7 caregivers for being there in the middle of the night. Thanks also goes to her church family, to her Stevens minister Millie, and to Father Christopher Hogan of Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Knoxville. Thanks to all who assisted tirelessly in her many daily battles and struggles with the effects of the cancer and Crohn’s. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Deborah’s name go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and to the American Cancer Society. Deborah will be so dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her words of grace, wisdom, and faith will live on for the surviving generations. “It’s not how you start out in this life, it’s all in how you finish and in the way in which you give the glory to God for all your many blessings.” Private services were held.

    Neil Thomas Ledford, age 28, of Bristol, Virginia, went home to meet his Heavenly Father on Monday, December 5th, 2022. Neil was born in Johnson City, Tennessee to Carolyn (Mann) Ledford Good of Elizabethton, Tennessee and the late Dennis Edward Ledford Jr. Tennessee. In addition to his father, Neil is preceded in death by his grandfather, Jimmie Dale Mann, and his step grandfather, James Simpson.

    Neil was a faithful friend, with a kind, loving spirit and a very giving heart. He was good natured, funny, and loved his family very much, always making sure that they were taken care of and had what they needed.

    From a young age, Neil displayed a wonderful work ethic and an interest in electronics, spending one summer working with NASA’s INSPIRE Nanotechnology Research program in San Juan, Puerto Rico through the STEM program at Oklahoma State University. After high school, Neil went on to work with the Avionics Department at Bell Helicopter, earning a five year achievement medal for his exceptional work and dedication.

    Neil loved photography and had a lifelong passion for fast cars, participating in local cars shows as an active member of Tri-Cities Cars and Coffee Club After Dark with his own Dodge Charger. He was also a member of Civil Air Patrol, graduating as a Cadet Major, and was a member of Celebration Church. In his spare time, Neil also enjoyed geology and hiking.

    Those left to remember and cherish Neil’s memory include his mother, Carolyn Ledford Good and her husband Sean Good, of Elizabethton; his sister, Allison Ledford Davies and her husband Harry Davies, of Kingsport; his brother, Jared Ledford, of Jonesborough; his grandparents, Janette Mann, of Elizabethton, Jana Simpson, of Johnson City, and Dennis Ledford Sr. and his wife, Donna Graybeal Ledford, of Gray; his uncle, Dale Ledford, of Johnson City; and his aunts, Teresa Treadway, Lisa Germaine, and her husband Dan Germaine, all of Elizabethton; and Jennifer Ledford France and her husband Dean, of Jonesborough. Several other extended family members also survive.

    A service to honor and celebrate Neil’s life and memory will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 10, 2022 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tennessee with Pastor Robert Russell of Celebration Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.

    The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Josh Banks of Shepherd’s Rock Bible Church officiating. Active pallbearers will be Harry Davies, Chris Birchfield, Tim Compton, Caleb Meade, Dale Ledford, and Kurt Germaine. Neil’s friends and coworkers from Bell Helicopter will serve as honorary pallbearers.
