Mrs. Ida Snyder Pardue, age 94, of Camp Joy Road, Zionville, passed away Tuesday afternoon. She was a daughter of the late Ira Washington and Elizabeth Amanda Dowell Snyder. Ida was a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, canning, flowers, taking care of her grandchildren and family, and reading her Bible. She attended Antioch Baptist Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Margaret Grindstaff and husband Danny of Mountain City, Helen Pardue of Zionville, Patsy Courtner and husband Jerry of Mountain City, and Wanda Eldreth and husband Bobby of Boone, three sons, R. C. Pardue and wife Pat, Billy Ray Pardue and wife Bitha Lou and Danny Pardue and wife Christina all of Zionville, one sister, Flora Hess and husband John of Mountain City one brother, Claude Snyder of West Grove, PA, sixteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Will Pardue, two sons, Ronnie Pardue and J. C. Pardue and wife Frances, two sisters, Annie Morefield and Fannie Wilson, and five brothers, Charles, Stanley, Arthur, Eddie and John Snyder.

Eugene Oliver, 71, 167 Opossum Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, August 29, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Oliver was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Lorina Myers Oliver. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rita Buckles Oliver, an infant son, Joseph Allen Oliver, a sister, Clara Bowers, and three brothers, Fornie Oliver, Jessie Oliver and Cecil Oliver.
Mr. Oliver was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and a retired employee of Mapes Piano String Company.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Juanita Oliver, Elizabethton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Annie and Preston Williams, Elizabethton, and Pearl Grindstaff, Valdese, N.C.; and a special friend, Pansy Hart, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Helen Lucille Farmer, age 93, of Mountain City and Trade, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Friday evening, February 8, 2019 at the Mountain City Care Center. She was born in Trade TN, Johnson County, on September 19, 1925 to the late Frank M. Main and Nancy Elizabeth Snyder Main. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hayden Farmer.

Helen was a faithful member of Evergreen Baptist Church. She had many friends and Helen loved her family and will be truly missed by all who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memories include her son, Sid Farmer and wife Cathie of Zionville, NC, one granddaughter, Myra Farmer

ELIZABETHTON - Pastor Harold Mains 82, of Elizabethton TN., went to be with the Lord after a long fight with prostate cancer on Monday, February 8, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Glen Mains and Virginia Perkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Younce, Grandmother Callie Mains, brother Henry Mains, and Ron Perkins.

Reverend Mains was a pastor for sixty years. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Northeastern Bible College in Essex Falls, New jersey where he served as Dean of Men and Athletic Director. Pastor Mains served as a missionary to the Children’s Bible Mission before pastoring several churches in NC., SC., TN., which included, Faulks Baptist, Cooley Springs Baptist, Lee Park Baptist, Centerville Baptist, Fairview Baptist, Big Springs Baptist, Philadelphia, and Crosspointe Fellowship.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of sixty years, Anita Gandin Mains; one son, Michael Mains, and wife Lisa; two granddaughters, Kelsey Allred, and husband Kyle, Molly Vickery and husband Chase, and soon to be great granddaughter, Kallie Elizabeth Allred; one sister, Barbara Bunton, several nieces and nephews.

Pastor Mains served twenty years as the President of the Elizabethton Twins. Through the years he served as chaplain for numerous teams including, the Elizabethton Twins, Science Hill basketball team, Providence Academy baseball team, several teams at Elizabethton and Chesnee High Schools. He also served as Chaplain for the Elizabethton Police Department and Lifecare in Elizabethton. Pastor Mains was inducted into the 2020 Appalachian League and the Carter County Sports Hall of Fames. He also served as a coach for numerous youth baseball and softball teams and was honored by Northeastern Bible College who annually presents their top athlete a scholarship award in his name.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Crosspointe Fellowship Church, Dr. Breemer, Dr. Beard, and Amedisys Hospice Team along with Pastors of the Watauga Association, J.A. Stalcup Jr. and Memorial Funeral Home, special friend Angie Wilhoit, and many others that cared so deeply for Pastor Mains.

A Service to Celebrate the life of Pastor Mains will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Babb and the Rev. Jack Roddy officiating. Ruby H. Slemp, age 92, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at her residence with her family and friends by her side.
She was born January 30, 1921, in Johnson County, Tennessee, to the late Roscoe and Alice Potter Perkins.
In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, McDonald Slemp; sisters: Blanche Stout, Cleo Colson and Doris Hughes; brothers: Hartley Potter, Earl Perkins and Shelton Perkins; and a son-in-law, Jim Rupard.
She was employed at Burlington Industries for many years.
Ruby enjoyed reading her Bible. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and when she was able, Ruby loved to be outside working in her flower gardens.
Ruby is survived by her daughters: Linda Rupard, of Winston-Salem, NC, Karen Icenhour and husband, Tom, of Mountain City, TN, and Donna West and husband, Dr. Mike West, of Knoxville, TN; sons: Buddy Slemp and wife, Betty, and Jack Slemp and wife, Olive, all of Lexington, NC; brother, Eddie Perkins and wife, Cledith, of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren: Chris, Alisa, Billie, Frankie, Michael, Debbie and Addison: great grandchildren: Thomas, Carson, Matthew, Kelsey, Brandie, TC, Billie Jr., 'Bubba,' Katelyn, Rhea, Brian, Megan and Courtney; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Gentry; several great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Garland, September 24, 1997; and one sister and seven brothers.

Her hobby was quilting.

Ora L. May, age 70, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. Ora was born on November 2, 1950 to the late Clint Lipford and Edith Lipford Segnor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael May; mother-in-law, Carrie May; sister, Carolyn Conway; brothers, Larry Lipford, Dale Lipford, Delbert Lipford, Roy Gene Lipford and special nephew, Mark Potter.

Ora was a dedicated wife of 47 years and a loving mother and grandmother who was a devoted Christian that loved the Lord and her family, especially her only grandson, Philip. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. She loved her church, church family, and ladies circle. Her hobbies included encouraging others on Facebook and the color by number game on her phone.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Linda May Hammons and husband Darrell, Freida May Gwinn and husband Keith; sisters, Mary Dunn, Gladys Wade; brother, Jay Snyder; grandson, Philip Dugger; nieces and nephews who were more like siblings, Reta Eller, Wanda LaGamba, Eric Potter, Johnny Potter, Luke Potter, and several other nieces and nephews.

The funeral service followed at 7:00 with Pastors Rick Thomason and Shannon Courtner officiating. The graveside service and burial were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Reece Memorial Cemetery. Billy Ray Pardue died August 26th, 2019. He was born February 27, 1951 in Watauga County. Billy was an active member, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN. He honorably served four years in the US Air Force and seventeen years in the Army National Guard. Billy retired as a master diesel mechanic for Hollar & Greene Produce. A Christian gentleman, Billy loved his God, family and country. He considered his family his greatest gift and was a loved and respected husband, father and grandfather. He was the best 'PawPaw' to his grandchildren whom he referred to as 'the children God gave him.

Billy is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bitha Kirby Pardue; sons, Jason Pardue and wife, Teresa of Vilas and Jared Pardue of Zionville; daughter, Jessica Greene and husband, Jonathan, of Zionville; grandchildren, Colton and Cadence Greene, Isabella, Adalae and Samuel Pardue; brothers, R.C. Pardue and wife Pat and Danny Pardue, all of Zionville; and sisters, Margaret Grindstaff and husband, Danny, of Mountain City, Helen Pardue of Zionville, Patsy Courtner and husband, Jerry, of Mountain City, and Wanda Eldreth and husband, Bobby, of Todd. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ronnie and J.C. Pardue and sister-in-law, Francis Pardue.

Funeral services held at Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN, officiated by Rev. Kenny Ray Vaught and Rev. Dwayne Tester. Graveside services with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Zionville, NC.

Larry Perry, 72, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Thursday, July 9, 2021, in Richmond, Ky. He was born in Elizabethton to the late Preston Perry and Beulah Nidiffer Perry.
Larry served in the Vietnam Era for the U.S. Army and later worked for Johnson City Mattress Company as a truck driver. Larry was of the Baptist faith. He was a constable in Carter County for 19 years. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, old cars and playing bingo.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Jerry Pierce; brother-in-law, Mike Bradley; and several aunts and uncles.
Those left to cherish his memory are his life partner, Gail Arnold, of the home; daughter, Barbara Fullerton of Dumas, Texas; son, Bobby Paul Perry of Dimmitt, Texas; two brothers, Gary Perry and wife Mary of Elizabethton and Preston Perry Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.; and four sisters, Judy Calloway and husband Robert, Betty Odom and husband David, Barbara Pelletier and husband Ernie, all of Elizabethton, and Penny Bradley of Watauga, Tenn. Several grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service for Larry Perry will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Buckles Cemetery with Rev. Robert Borrow officiating. Active pallbearers are Michael Bradley Jr., Timothy Pearson, Phil Bradley, Willie Braswell and Josh Blevins. Honorary pallbearers are all of the Carter County Constable Association and all of his friends.

Goldy Mae Luckett, 76, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022, at her home. Goldy was born on December 6, 1945 to the late Preston and Anna Mae Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ivan Williams and Jean Oliver.
Goldy was a very caring and giving person who always had a smile on her face. She was a hard worker and loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandkids. She faithfully attended Mountain City Baptist Church until her illness prevented her from doing so.

Ivan Lee Williams, age 71, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on March 20, 1948 to the late Preston and Anna Mae Oliver Williams. In addition to his parents, Ivan was preceded in death by his brother, Doris Oliver.

Ivan was a great man and lived a simple life. He was a very gifted and talented carpenter. He was always willing to help others and was a very giving man. Ivan was very kind and always happy. Ivan also enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. He loved his pets, the parakeet, Polly and his Ducky. He was of the Christian faith.

Billy Gene "Buddy" Slemp, Sr., of Lexington, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1939 to the late McDonald Slemp and Ruby Perkins Slemp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Cole Slemp, and a sister, Linda Rupard.

Buddy was a sweet and loving man. He retired as a truck driver after driving for 47 years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Davis Slemp; sons: Billy Gene Slemp, Jr. of Bolt, West Virginia and Carl Franklin Slemp of Lexington, NC; sisters: Donna West and husband Mike, Karen Icenhour and husband Tom; brother, Jack Slemp and wife Olive; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Friday, April 21, 2017 from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Mac Arnold officiating. BUTLER - Geraldine Forrester Cable, 82, Butler, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021 in the Mountain City Care Center. She was born June 10, 1939 in Erwin, Tennessee to the late Hubert and Margaret Howell Forrester. She had lived her entire life in Butler. Geraldine was a graduate of Johnson County High School. She had been employed by the Johnson County School System for 28 years as a cook at Doe Elementary School. She was an active member of Little Doe Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir for several years. She was also a member of Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star and Beta Theta Club. She was a granddaughter of Oscar & Ella Forrester whom she lived with for a number of years.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years: Richard Cable. One Son: Teddy Ray (Debbie) Cable, Daytona Beach, Florida. Three Grandchildren: Lacinda Renee Cable Lewis, and fiance Delane Pardue, Wilkesboro, North Carolina, Todd Christopher Cable, Butler and Shauna Raeann Cable, Dayton Beach, Florida. Four Great Grandchildren: Raiden Gage Lewis, Kaidence Jade Lewis, Todd Cable, Jr. and Trinity Cable. Also several cousins. Her fur baby “Sam”
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2021 in the Little Doe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kreg Smith officiating. Judy Kaye Cornett, age 73, passed away on December 6, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. Judy was born on March 31, 1948 to the late Harold and Crete Forrester.

James D. “Jim” Head, age 71 of Mountain City, TN, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, April 4, 2023 at his home. Jim was born March 20, 1952 in Mountain City, Johnson County, TN to Cora Mae Payne Head and the late Worley Ray Head. In addition to his father, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond R. Head (1984).

Jim was a 1970 graduate of Johnson County High School. He was employed at Tri-State Growers for 41 years. Jim was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday April 8, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. from Dunn Memorial Park Cemetery (1889 Forge Creek Rd. Mountain City, TN) with Minister Josh Giddings officiating.

He is survived by his mother, Cora Mae Stout of the home; his sister, Dorothy Shupe and husband Mike; brother, Steve Stout; niece, Kim Hampton; great nephew, Logan Hampton; aunt, Betty Eller; many friends, neighbors, co-workers and his church family.

Roy “Buck” Salmons, age 76, passed away on November 22, 2022 at his home. Buck was born in Ashe County, NC on January 28, 1946 to the late Reba and Walt Salmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Art and Hollie Greer and Lura Salmons; grandson, Jason Dugger; great granddaughter, Bel Reece and several aunts and uncles.

Buck enjoyed working on cars, motorcycles, bowling, and playing horse shoes and card games, especially poker. He was a millwright for many years and at one time was a newspaper editor. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Buck was a kind a generous man who would do anything for anybody, if he could. He was loved by all that knew him.
